Cardinals hope to continue home win streak vs. Falcons

The Cardinals have not lost to the Falcons in Arizona since 2001.

The Arizona Cardinals and Atlanta Falcons have faced each other 32 times all-time in the regular season. The two teams have each won 16 times. The Cardinals do hold a 1-0 advantage in the postseason, beating the Falcons during their 2008 run to the Super Bowl.

However, the Falcons have had most of the recent success against Arizona. They have won 4 of the last 5 matchups.

The Falcons beat the Cardinals 20-19 last season in Atlanta after Kyler Murray went down with his torn ACL. The Falcons got a game-winning 21-yard field goal as time expired for the win.

The only win the Cardinals have had over the Falcons since 2013 was Murray’s rookie year, a 34-33 win because the Falcons missed the game-tying extra point with under two minutes left in the game.

However, the Falcons have not won in Arizona since 2001, going 0-4 in Arizona since then.

This time around, Murray is back in the lineup and will face Taylor Heinicke, who has never faced the Cardinals.

Cardinals re-sign WR Andre Baccellia, CB Quavian White to practice squad, add OL

The Cardinals made some practice squad moves on Wednesday.

The Arizona Cardinals, along with announcing that running back James Conner, out for the last four weeks on injured reserve with a knee injury, was designated to return and had his practice window opened, also made a few practice squad moves.

They added three players, two of whom have been with the team almost the who year.

Receiver Andre Baccellia, signed to the active roster on Saturday and the released on Monday and subsequently cleared waivers, was re-signed to the practice squad. So was undrafted rookie cornerback Quavian White, who has been on and off the practice squad several times this season.

They also signed offensive lineman Austen Pleasants, who is a new addition.

Pleasants is 6-foot-7 and 330 pounds.

He originally entered the NFL in 2020 and an undrafted rookie out of Ohios University with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He spent most of his rookie season on their practice squad and then joined the Carolina Panthers in 2021. He He spent the majority of his rookie year on the Jaguars practice squad before joining Carolina in 2021 where he appeared in one game. Pleasants has also spent time (2022-23) on the practice squads of the Chargers and Bears. He played five seasons (2015-19) at Ohio University where he appeared in 41 games and earned second-team All-MAC honors in 2019.

James Conner designated to return from IR

Conner is expected to be activated this week and return to the lineup against the Atlanta Falcons.

The Arizona Cardinals opened the door for the return of running back James Conner from injured reserve. He was designated to return from injured reserve, where he has been for the last four weeks with a knee injury.

It opened his practice window, allowing him to practice with the team. The Cardinals have 21 days in which to restore him to the active roster or he would revert to IR for the rest of the season.

Conner injured his knee in the Cardinals’ Week 5 loss at home to the Cincinnati Bengals. They have gone 0-4 since he was placed on IR.

He was limited in his first practice back on Wednesday, but he is expected to ramp up and be activated this weekend to start against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday.

In the five games Conner has played this season, he has rushed for 364 yards and two touchdowns on 5.4 yards per attempt.

His return along with quarterback Kyler Murray should be a big boost to the Cardinals’ struggling offense.

Cardinals officially activate Kyler Murray from PUP

Murray is part of the active roster for the first time this season and will practice with the intention of starting against the Falcons.

The Arizona Cardinals officially made the roster move everyone knew was coming. They activated quarterback Kyler Murray from the PUP reserve, placing him finally on the 53-man active roster.

The Cardinals had opened his 21-day practice window, designating him to return three weeks ago on Wednesday. Tuesday was the 21st day. He had to be activated by Wednesday before practice or he would have reverted to PUP for the remainder of the season.

Murray last played in December last season against the New England Patriots when he tore his ACL. He had surgery in January and now is 10 months beyond that.

Head coach Jonathan Gannon said Monday that Murray would start this weekend against the Atlanta Falcons provided all goes well in practice. He will get the full load of first-team reps to prep for the game.

The Cardinals went 1-8 this season while he was on PUP and 0-4 to end last season in the games he didn’t start after his knee injury.

To make room for Murray on the active roster, they placed cornerback Bobby Price, who had played well on special teams, on injured reserve.

They also released receiver Daniel Arias from the practice squad, presumably to make room for Andre Baccellia, whom they signed to the roster from the practice squad to play on Sunday and then released on Monday.

The Cardinals and Falcons play Sunday at State Farm Stadium at 2:05 p.m. Arizona time.
