Expert picks for Cardinals-Bills in Week 1

Check out who is picking the Bills and who is picking the Cardinals to win in the Week 1 battle.

The Jess Cardinals and Buffalo Bills play each other Sunday in their season opener. The Bills are home favorites. The Cardinals are confident and are looking to get an upset.

After all, the last two times they have opened on the road against a team that went to the playoffs the previous season, they have come away with upset wins.

What are the experts saying?

Jess Root, Cards Wire

I believe the Cardinals will do better than expected. I believe the offense will move the ball. I believe Allen and Cook will be tough to defend. Arizona’s defense will come out more physically than the Bills are prepared for but Allen will rally the offense back.

It is a high-scoring, close affair that comes down to the final possession. Bills 30, Cardinals 24

Nick Wojton, Bills Wire

A team like the Cardinals, who didn’t have the best luck with health last season, are always overlooked. People forget injuries occur. While I have a 10-point difference, I think the Bills probably tack on a field goal late to get that gap but I’m expecting it to be pretty close throughout the day… an exciting game, but not quite the “Hail Murray” of years past.

No roster moves for Cardinals leading up to season opener vs. Bills

The Cardinals don’t elevate anyone from the practice squad in Week 1.

The Arizona Cardinals will go with the players they have on the 53-man roster on Sunday in their season opener against the Buffalo Bills. Able to elevate up to two players from the practice squad, they elected not to for Sunday’s game.

Typically, a team will use the practice squad elevations for injury management or special teams roles.

Because the Cardinals are pretty healthy (only receiver Xavier Weaver was ruled out of the game), they have all their roles filled.

Players can be elevated from the practice squad and revert back to it without being subject to waivers only three times. Without having to use that on anyone this week, they have at least one extra week for everyone before that expires.

The Bills elevated two players — center Will Clapp and defensive end Kameron Cline.

Buffalo will be without two defensive ends. Javon Solomon was ruled out on the final injury report on Friday and fellow defensive end Dawuane Smoot, questionable on the injury report Friday, was downgraded to out on Saturday.

The Cardinals and Bills kick off Sunday at 1 p.m. ET (10 a.m. Arizona time).

Cardinals vs. Bills: 5 matchups to watch in Week 1

A look at what matchups you should pay attention to in particular between the Cardinals and Bills.

The Arizona Cardinals face the Buffalo Bills Sunday in Week 1. It will be the first time we see all the Cardinals’ starters in a setting other than practice all together.

In the game, there are some matchups that will be intriguing to watch.

Which ones should you pay attention to?

WR Marvin Harrison Jr. vs. CB Rasul Douglas

This will be Harrison’s NFL debut. Douglas is now the Bills’ No. 1 cornerback as Tre’Davious White is now with the Los Angeles Rams. Who will have the upper hand? Will it be the wily vet Douglas or will the young stud make plays?

LB Kyzir White vs. TE Dalton Kincaid

The Bills have a new receiving corps and Kincaid now is the biggest threat in the passing game. White is great in coverage and was playing at an extremely high level before he tore his biceps last year, ending his season. If White can limit Kincaid, the Buffalo passing game will not be as scary.

CB Garrett Williams vs. WR Khalil Shakir

Shakir is the only receiver on the Bills who has caught a pass from Josh Allen before this season. he will play mostly in the slot, where Williams will defend.

DEs AJ Epenesa, Von Miller, Greg Rousseau vs. OTs Jonah Williams, Paris Johnson

Johnson is playing left tackle for the first time in a game and Williams is making his Cardinals debut at right tackle. The Buffalo edge rushers will have to produce without Leonard Floyd, who signed with the 49ers in the offseason.

DL Justin Jones vs. LG David Edwards

Jones was the Cardinals’ biggest defensive addition in the offseason. He will line up against Edwards, the Bills’ new left guard. Jones is good against the run and showed some pass-rushing chops in 2023 for the Bears.

Cardinals vs. Bills: 4 keys for a Week 1 upset

What do the Cardinals need to do to upset the Bills on Sunday?

The Arizona Cardinals are underdogs as they open the season on the road against the Buffalo Bills. However, the last two times they opened the season on the road against a team that made the postseason the previous season, they won.

What will be the keys for the Cardinals to potentially “put the league on notice,” as defensive lineman L.J. Collier said in the preseason?

Make Josh Allen make mistakes

Allen has thrown five interceptions in his last two season openers, which were both Buffalo wins, but with as good as Allen is, the Cardinals will need to steal a possession or two.

Limit TE Dalton Kincaid

The Bills’ receiving corps of Mack Hollins, Curtis Samuel, Khalil Shakir and rookie Keon Coleman is not scary. Only Shakir has caught a pass from Allen before this season.

Kincaid will be to the Bills’ offense what Tray McBride was for the Cardinals last year.

The Cardinals played tight ends well last season and with Kyzir White back in the lineup and healthy, they have a pretty good chance at limiting him.

Challenge the secondary

The Bills have a completely remade secondary. There is no more Tre’Davious White, Micah Hyde or Jordan Poyer. They now have Rasul Douglas, Taylor Rapp and Damar Hamlin.

Kyler Murray must challenge the Bills down the field and show that the passing game is better than last season.

Run the ball

The Bills were 28th in yards per rushing attempt allowed last season. They allowed over 100 rushing yards in five of their first six games last year and in their final four, including the postseason.

Their best run defense is their offense getting leads.

If the Cardinals stick to the run and don’t fall too far behind, they will be able to move the ball.

Behind enemy lines: Cardinals at Bills Week 1 Q&A preview with Bills Wire

Bills Wire’s Nick Wojton takes Cardinals fans behind enemy lines heading into the team’s Week 1 matchup against the Bills.

The Arizona Cardinals face the Buffalo Bills in a tough road matchup to open the season. Both teams have questions entering the season. The Bills have a remade receiver room and a remade secondary.

The Cardinals added talent to what was a terrible defense in 2023 but still have major questions with the pass rush.

To prepare for the game, Bills Wire managing editor Nick Wojton takes us behind enemy lines, answering a few questions and making his predictions for the game.

QB Josh Allen

Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen (17) tries to get around New York Jets linebacker Bryce Huff (47).

Is Josh Allen really overrated?

I don’t think he’s overrated at all. From a Buffalo perspective, watching him week in and week out, you’ve just got to take the bad with the good. While Allen certainly does turn the ball over a lot at times, he more than makes up for it with all the points he does put up. It outweighs his giveaways by a lot, he just hasn’t won the ‘big one’ yet and that’s hard to do when you’re living in a world where Patrick Mahomes exists.

No Diggs, Davis

Buffalo Bills wide receiver Khalil Shakir (10) tries to get outside of New England Patriots cornerback Myles Bryant (27) for a short gain.

How do you think the offense will look this year with no Stefon Diggs/Gabriel Davis?

The Bills had plenty of big plays down the field with that duo. Davis just made a lot of money out of it with the Jacksonville Jaguars. While they will continue to come in 2024, I’m expecting them to be of a different variety. Buffalo’s offense is now setup to be one where Allen gets the ball out of his hand quicker so he can let his playmakers do the work. He’s still Josh Allen at QB and he’s still going to take his shots, but there will be opportunities for those around him to make the splash players this year.

The defense

Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

What are you most excited about and most worried about on defense?

I’m looking forward to seeing how this pass rush unfolds, specifically Von Miller. He was still the same old Von before his ACL injury and he just did not look good when he returned last season. Now two years removed from that huge injury, the Bills are hoping he’s back to his best and that’d be a huge boost. The worry will sit with Dorian Williams, a.k.a. Matt Milano’s replacement. Milano is a fantastic defender and easily Buffalo’s best. He could miss the entire season due to a bicep injury.

Matchups

Mark Konezny-USA TODAY Sports

Which matchups are you most looking forward to seeing?

It’s probably the low-hanging fruit, but Marvin Harrison Jr. against Keon Coleman. OK, two wide receivers won’t face each other head-to-head, but there is a lot of hope riding with these two rookies and seeing what production Coleman has out of the gate compared to Harrison will be a fun watch in a potentially high-scoring game.

Bills final injury report: Backup DE Dawuane Smoot added on Friday

Check out which Buffalo Bills won’t play and who might not in Week 1 against the Cardinals.

Buffalo Bills quarterback Mitchell Trubisky has no injury designation, so he appears set to be Josh Allen’s backup in the game when they face the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday. However, backup defensive end Dawuane Smoot was added to the report on Friday because of a toe injury.

The details of the Bills’ final injury report are below.

Buffalo Bills Week 1 final injury report game designations

Ruled out

DE Javon Solomon (oblique)

Solomon did not participate in practice for the Bills all week.

Questionable

DE Dawuane Smoot (toe)

The Bills could be shorthanded at end if Smoot, who was added to the report and did not practice Friday, is unable to play and with Solomon already declared out.

That leaves only backups Von Miller and Casey Touhill on the edge. It’s possible the Bills could elevate either Kameron Cline or Kingsley Jonathan from the practice squad.

Smoot was signed in May after becoming a Jaguars unrestricted free agent in March. Although he had only one sack last season, in the previous four in Jacksonville, he totaled 22.5 sacks and 24 tackles for loss.

No injury designation

S Cole Bishop (shoulder), TE Quintin Morris (shoulder), WR Curtis Samuel (toe), QB Mitchell Trubisky (knee)

Trubisky was limited on Wednesday, but then practiced fully the next two days. Samuel had full participation all week.

Arizona Cardinals Week 1 final injury report game designations

Ruled out

  • WR Xavier Weaver (oblique)

Questionable

  • S Joey Blount (back)
  • TE Tip Reiman (ankle)

Cardinals final injury report: WR Xavier Weaver rookie debut delayed

Check out the final game designations for the Arizona Cardinals against the Buffalo Bills in Week 1.

It’s no surprise that undrafted free agent rookie wide receiver Xavier Weaver was declared out for the Arizona Cardinals’ Week 1 game Sunday in Buffalo against the Bills. He did not participate in practice all week.

The details of the Cardinals’ final injury report are below.

Arizona Cardinals Week 1 final injury report game designations

Ruled out

WR Xavier Weaver (oblique)

Weaver was expected to contribute in the kick return game, so that role could be handled by running back DeeJay Dallas and/or wide receiver Greg Dortch.

Two players have to be deep on kickoff returns. We’ll see if Dortch or Dallas is the main punt returner.

Questionable

S Joey Blount (back), TE Tip Reiman (ankle)

Blount, a standout on special teams, did not practice Thursday after experiencing the back issue in practice Wednesday. He was back on the field Friday, but was limited.

Reiman, slated to be used significantly as a blocker in the run game, was limited in practice all week. If he is inactive or limited in the game, Travis Vokolek would play mostly as a blocker.

Undrafted rookie WR unlikely to make NFL debut vs. Bills

Rookie receiver Xavier Weaver unlikely to play with an oblique that has kept him from practicing so far this week.

The final injury report will come out later on Friday, but one Arizona Cardinals rookie on the active roster is not expected to play in their season opener on Sunday against the Buffalo Bills.

Head coach Jonathan Gannon said that undrafted rookie receiver Xavier Weaver, who missed Monday’s, Wednesday’s and Thursday’s practices with an oblique injury, will likely be unavailable.

That means his NFL debut will have to wait at least a week.

Weaver made an impact in the offseason, training camp and the preseason, especially as a kick returner. As the Cardinals’ priority undrafted rookie free agent, he was one of six receivers to make the active roster.

The Cardinals and Bills kick off from Highmark Stadium on Sunday at 10 a.m. Arizona time.
