Trey McBride’s availability in question with rib injury

The Cardinals downgraded him from having no injury designation to being questionable with an injury to his ribs.

Arizona Cardinals tight end Trey McBride appeared set to play on Sunday in Week 5 after missing Week 4 in concussion protocol. That might have changed. While he has cleared concussion protocol, the Cardinals downgraded McBride to questionable for the game with an injury to his ribs.

McBride was a full participant in practice on Friday but must have had something come up with his ribs afterward.

He apparently traveled with the team so his still could play, but with new NFL rules about injury reporting, they had to disclose it.

In three games this season, McBride has 14 receptions for 122 yards. In his absence last week, the Cardinals suffered their worst loss under head coach Jonathan Gannon, a 42-14 defeat to the Washington Commanders.

The Cardinals and 49ers kick off Sunday at 1:05 p.m. Arizona time.

When could Cardinals OL Jonah Williams return from his knee injury?

Williams is rehabbing and hoping to come back as early as November. He might not come back at all this season.

The Arizona Cardinals have missed starting right tackle Jonah Williams. The veteran who signed a two-year, $30 million deal this offseason has played only one quarter of football. He injured his knee on the final play of the first quarter of the Cardinals’ season-opening loss to the Buffalo Bills.

Is he coming back this season?

It isn’t known. Head coach Jonathan Gannon said last week, “We’ll see,” which is never lends itself to something positive.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports his return is uncertain.

Williams is rehabbing the injury with the goal of returning later this season, but it is possible he is unable to return. It will depend on the response to the rehab.

Fowler says he is eyeing a potential return next month in November but that is “up in the air.”

In the meantime, Kelvin Beachum has started two games and missed one with a hamstring injury. They have no other backup tackle on the active roster. Charlie Heck is on the practice squad and rookie Christian Jones is on injured reserve but has had his practice window opened so he will be activated in the next three weeks.

Where is Cardinals K Matt Prater?

The Cardinals signed a kicker to the practice squad and Prater was not at practice. What is going on?

Arizona Cardinals kicker Matt Prater was not on the field Wednesday morning for the portion of practice open to the media.

There were some raised eyebrows last Friday when the Cardinals had tryouts with kickers Anders Carlson and Chad Ryland, especially when Prater was not on the injury report that day and kicked in the game against the Commanders.

Is there an injury? Is it a personal issue that the team knew was coming when they had the tryouts on Friday?

The team announced Ryland was signed to the practice squad on Wednesday, adding intrigue.

We will learn something when the injury report is revealed later Wednesday.

Head coach Jonathan Gannon spoke to the media at 9:45 Wednesday morning, and the team announced the addition of Ryland a little less than an hour later, about 15 minutes before practice started.

Also not on the field were cornerback Garrett Williams and rookie guard Isaiah Adams.

Adams was added to the injury report this past Friday with a thumb injury and played two special teams snaps against Washington.

Confirming what Gannon told the media, tight end Trey McBride (concussion) and defensive lineman Khyiris Tonga (knee), who both did not play Sunday, were on the field as was rookie tackle Christian Jones, who has been designated for return from injured reserve.

Cardinals TE Trey McBride injury update, return from concussion protocol

McBride was set to return to practice on Wednesday.

Arizona Cardinals tight end Trey McBride was missed in Week 4 as he was unavailable, going through the league concussion protocol for the injury he suffered in the fourth quarter of their game in Week 3.

He is on track to play in Week 5 against the San Francisco 49ers.

Head coach Jonathan Gannon told reporters Wednesday morning that McBride was coming out of protocol and would be out there for Wednesday’s practice.

The first injury report of the week will come out Wednesday afternoon.  We will see whether or not he is limited at practice to start the week.

Gannon also said that defensive lineman Khyiris Tonga, who missed the game with a knee injury, would also return to practice.

Which Cardinals rookie is being designated to return from IR?

The Cardinals have three rookies on injured reserve who are eligible to have their practice window opened. Only one is returning this week.

The Arizona Cardinals have three players — all rookies — eligible to return from injured reserve this week. Only one is returning to practice and it isn’t the one fans are hoping to see.

Head coach Jonathan Gannon told reporters before Wednesday’s practice that rookie tackle Christian Jones is having his practice window opened, opening the door to his being reinstated to the active roster. He was placed on injured reserve before the season and designated to return with a leg injury  he suffered in the preseason finale.

It will allow him to practice and gives him 21 days to be placed on the active roster.

The Cardinals currently have no backup tackles on the active roster behind starters Paris Johnson and Kelvin Beachum.

First-round pick Darius Robinson, the Cardinals’ second first-round pick this year, is the player most are waiting for. He suffered a calf injury in practice and could potentially return to practice. That won’t happen today. All Gannon would say is that Robinson is “doing a good job.”

Also not designated to return to practice was cornerback Elijah Jones, who suffered a heel injury.

We will see whether the Cardinals see Jones as ready to be active on game days to be the backup swing tackle, or whether they will elevate Charlie Heck again from the practice squad.

Trey McBride injury update after missing Week 4 loss to Commanders

A look at where he is after missing Week 4 with a concussion.

The Arizona Cardinals missed tight end Trey McBride on Sunday, who missed the game recovering from a concussion he suffered in the fourth quarter of their game in Week 3 against the Detroit Lions.

He did not practice all last week.

Head coach gave a small update about McBride on Monday, saying that he is still in concussion protocol.

“I would say yes, but he did a good job last week,” he told reporters. “(He) wasn’t able to play and we thought that was kind of the smart thing to do, obviously with how the protocol works, but it’s just looking good.”

He was missed as Elijah Higgins, starting in his place, only caught two passes for 12 yards.

The Cardinals’ first practice of Week 5 is on Wednesday. We will see what his status is then and whether he practices at all, is limited or is a full go.

Cardinals TE Trey McBride and DL Khyiris Tonga declared out vs. Commanders

McBride did not clear concussion protocol in time to play on Sunday. Elijah Higgins will have an increased role.

There’s no need to wait for the injury report that will be announced later today because Arizona Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon said before practice that tight end Trey McBride (concussion) and defensive lineman Khyiris Tonga (knee) will not play Sunday against the Washington Commanders.

While Gannon also said, “Everybody else, we’re still working through here in the next couple days.” He later said there are no issues with safety Budda Baker and wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr., who are both dealing with quadrcieps injuries. Baker was upgraded to full participation Thursday and Harrison was limited for the second consecutive day.

However, Gannon said right tackle Kelvin Beachum (hamstring) is still in the “work through” category. With Jackson Barton (toe) on practice-squad injured, if Beachum can’t go, Charlie Heck would be the likely option although Austen Pleasants was signed to the practice squad this week.

McBride’s absence means a potentially larger role for Elijah Higgins, who has caught all four of the targets thrown his way this season for 41 yards and a touchdown.

Asked about being comfortable with the guy he calls “Higgy Bear,” Gannon said, “1,000 percent. That’s a strong room. Their roles will kinda change a little bit, all three of them without Trey, but we’re very comfortable and confident. I’m excited for those guys.”

The other tight ends are rookie Tip Reiman and Travis Vokolek, who has been inactive each of the first three games.

On the defensive line, Naquan Jones, who was re-signed this week, will likely be active Sunday.

Gannon said of bringing back Jones, “Knows our system. (I) had a lot of love for Naquan. That was a tough decision at the 53 there how it all went. We like the guys that we kept, but he was one of the guys that it was hard to see him go. So we had the opportunity to get him back and he did a good job this week.”
