Quinn names Commanders’ captains for postseason

And a very special honorary captain.

Dan Quinn continued his Friday tradition of naming the captains for the upcoming Commanders game.

During the regular season, Quinn, on Fridays, would name the three captains for that weekend’s game. This time, Quinn announced there would be five captains, not three. In addition, he referred to them as “captains elected by the team.” The five captains are WR Terry McLaurin, LB Bobby Wagner, TE Zach Ertz, S Jeremy Reaves, and QB Jayden Daniels. Quinn then announced that Doug Williams would serve as an honorary captain.

McLaurin, age 29, and in his sixth season, led the team with 82 receptions, 1,096 yards, 13 receiving touchdowns, 13.4 yards per reception, and 56 first downs.

Wagner, age 34, led the team in tackles (132), solo tackles (75), assists (57), and tied for the team lead in fumble recoveries (2).

Ertz,, also 34, stayed healthy enough to start and play all 17 games, catching 66 passes for seven touchdowns and 38 first downs.

Reaves is still recognized by his teammates as a leader on the coverage units. Quinn Friday told of how, in the very first OTA, Reaves came to work right away and impressed Quinn with an interception he made that day.

Daniels is the only rookie to be named a postseason captain. He rushed for 891 yards, an average of 6.0 per carry. He also passed for 3,568 yards, completing 69 percent for 25 passing touchdowns and nine interceptions. Quinn stated, “I thought, what a great tribute by his teammates to name him. I thought just humble; he’s hungry and ready for the moment.”

Quinn said he “added a captain,” referring to Williams, who serves as Senior Advisor to the General Manager Adam Peters. “And I think it’s hard to describe his impact on our team, his support, and I love that dude.”

Quinn expressed Daniels and Williams are “very connected and it’s nice for both of them to see this relationship…That’s their relationship, and so the only things, whether it’s quarterback-wise or being in this community, that Doug has a special lens for that. And I think he is the best person to share that. And you feel Doug’s support.”

Quinn names Commanders’ captains vs. Cowboys

Who are the Commanders’ Week 18 captains?

Dan Quinn announced the Commanders’ captains for Sunday’s regular-season finale in Dallas.

On Friday, Quinn continued his practice of naming three captains during his time with the media.

The three announced were tight end Zach Ertz, defensive end Dorance Armstrong and safety Percy Butler, and the three were announced as representing the offense, defense and special teams respectively.

Ertz, an experienced veteran at age 34, has collected 61 receptions for 610 yards, averaging 10.0 a reception. Quinn referred to Ertz as “a pro’s pro,” saying he has brought both “consistency and humility on a regular basis.”

Having played for the Eagles nine seasons and now the Commanders one season, he has a decade of experience playing within the division. “He’s made a lot of impact, and he’s been [in] a lot of NFC East fights, so I thought he’d be offensively a good one to have up on this one.”

Armstrong has “always been somebody that never took the easy path. And it’s his work and it’s his skills and just almost by any means necessary to win,” said Quinn. Quinn added that Armstrong “finds that edge and finds the way.” Armstrong spent his first three years with the Cowboys prior to Dan Quinn’s arrival as the Dallas defensive coordinator and then played three years under Quinn before following him to Washington.

Butler, drafted in the fourth round in 2022, is a player Quinn said has been “an absolute tone-setter.” This season, Butler has been used primarily on special teams, though he started 13 games at safety in 2023. Quinn said, “The speed and the toughness he’s shown outside has really made an impact for us and brought a lot of energy to the team.”

Who are the Commanders’ captain for Week 17 vs. Falcons?

Captain Jayden Daniels.

The Commanders named their three team captains for Sunday’s contest against the Falcons on Friday.

Head coach Dan Quinn said the Commanders’ captains would be quarterback Jayden Daniels, linebacker Frankie Luvu and special teams leader Nick Bellore during his weekly Friday press conference.

Quinn referred to Daniels as the team’s elite connector, bringing the team together, especially in their winning moments. He also stated he felt that, during the second half of this season, Daniels had certainly earned the respect of the team and the right to be a team captain this week.

Daniels has completed 69.7 percent of his passes for 3,303 yards, including 22 touchdowns and eight interceptions. His passer rating is 101.,3 and his QBR is 71.8

Luvu is a player Quinn described as relentless day after day. “He leaves no doubt about how he plays, how he practices, and we all respect that.” Luvu has contributed 47 solo tackles, eight QB sacks, and one interception.

Bellore, the oldest Commander on the active roster, was released by the Seahawks and signed by the Commanders in early September. Quinn called Bellore Friday “the glue guy who leads with toughness. He has a great sense of humor.”

“Those three are a big push for us. In this game, they will be the captains.”

Commanders pick interesting captain for Week 13 vs. Titans

A former top pick for the Titans will serve as one of the Commanders’ Week 13 captains.

The Washington Commanders name three new captains for each game. Instead of naming permanent captains before the season, head coach Dan Quinn took the weekly approach this season to reward his players.

Washington announces the captains for the next game each Friday, and Quinn opens his final press conference of the week by discussing those captions.

The Commanders’ captains for the Week 13 game against the Tennessee Titans are quarterback Marcus Mariota, defensive tackle Sheldon Day, and longtime punter Tress Way.

Way is a former Washington captain who is having another stellar season. Day is a nine-year NFL veteran who was signed to the practice squad in August and elevated to the 53-man roster in October. Since Jonathan Allen’s season-ending injury, Day has been integral to Washington’s defensive tackle rotation.

Finally, there is Mariota. The 10-year veteran has only appeared in two games this season but shined in relief of Jayden Daniels in the Week 7 win over the Carolina Panthers. Mariota completed 18 of 23 passes for 205 yards and two touchdowns.

Why was Mariota selected? Well, there’s no denying he’s a popular player in the locker room, respected by his teammates and has been an excellent mentor for Daniels. However, he’s also a former No. 2 overall pick for the Titans.

Mariota spent his first five NFL seasons playing for Tennessee, going 29-32 as the starting quarterback, completing 63% of his passes for 13,207 yards, 76 touchdowns, 44 interceptions and rushing for 1,399 yards and 11 touchdowns.

“So, offensively will be Marcus Mariota, defensively, it’ll be Sheldon Day and on teams, Tress Way,” Quinn said Friday. “And so, we love that part of Fridays and getting a chance to say a few words about the guys and everybody kinda gets fired up.”

Quinn didn’t say it, but it’s clear why the team picked Mariota. Mariota didn’t necessarily leave Tennessee on bad terms, this continues a trend where Washington picks players as captains facing their former teams.

Maybe this week, the Commanders can get Mariota some revenge against his former team.

Commanders’ captains this week is no coincidence

Dan Quinn’s choice for captains were very deliberate.

Well, it was certainly no coincidence when Dan Quinn announced the Commanders’ captains for their game Sunday.

Quinn’s Commanders are playing host to the Cowboys on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Northwest Stadium. Consequently, Quinn named not one, not two, but all three captains to be former Dallas Cowboys, adding, “And all three of these guys have really had different ways they’ve made their impact with their teammates and on the team.”

Center Tyler Biadasz, DE Dante Fowler and CB Noah Igbinoghene were named the Commanders captains for the Week 12 contest against the Cowboys.

Biadasz spent his first four NFL seasons (2020-23) in Dallas, three of which were when Quinn served as defensive coordinator. Quinn brought Biadasz to Washington to add a veteran to the inside of the line and give rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels NFL experience. Biadasz has started all 11 games for the Commanders this season.

Fowler has been with Quinn while playing for the Florida Gators, Atlanta Falcons (2020), and the Cowboys (2022-23) and is now in Washington in 2024. Previously, Fowler was with the Rams (2018-2019) and played for the Jaguars (2016-18) after they drafted him third overall in the 2015 NFL draft.

This week’s captain representing the special team units is cornerback Noah Igbinoghene. Drated 30th overall in the 2020 NFL draft by the Dolphins, he played three seasons in Miami (2020-2022) before moving on to Dallas for the 2023 season. He followed Quinn to Washington, signing a one-year contract with the Commanders. Prior to coming to the Commanders, he had started only five games in his four seasons. But with Emmanuel Forbes struggling, Mike Sainristil often has to play outside corner, leaving the slot corner spot to Igbinoghene.

Dan Quinn announces Commanders’ captains vs Eagles

The Eagles will see a familiar face as one of the Commanders’ captains.

Dan Quinn Wednesday named his captains for Thursday night’s Commanders game in Philadelphia.

The game is big, as the Eagles (7-2) host the Commanders (7-3) from Lincoln Financial Field.

As has been Quinn’s custom this season, he named three captains, one each for offense, defense, and special teams.

Talking with the press, Quinn announced the Week 11 captains would be TE Zach Ertz and CB Mike Sainristil, and on special teams, it will be RB Jeremy McNichols, whom Quinn has been heard to call “J-Mack.”

“And all these guys, man, they bring a lot to our team in lots of different ways and standards and competing. And so we’re all pumped to see these guys get this up.”

Ertz is the second-leading receiver for the Commanders this season, with 37 receptions for 381 yards and one receiving touchdown. More importantly, Ertz has 19 receptions, which have converted 19 first downs.

McNichols has filled in nicely for Brian Robinson when Robinson has been ailing with knee and hamstring issues. McNichols has four rushing touchdowns and 190 yards on 38 carries for a 5.0 yards per carry average.

Sainristil has shown flexibility and adaptability when playing both slot and outside corner. The rookie from NCAA champion Michigan recorded the first Commanders’ interception of 2024 against the Ravens.

Quinn names Commanders’ Week 8 game captains

Dan Quinn with the ultimate praise for Jeremy Reaves.

Washington head coach Dan Quinn actually had some news Friday, other than Jayden Daniels.

As usual, on Friday, Quinn announced the captains for the upcoming weekend’s game. Friday, with the press, Quinn announced his captains for Sunday’s home 4:25 kickoff against the Bears would be G Nick Allegretti, S Jeremy Chinn, and S Jeremy Reaves.

Quinn then elaborated on what each of this week’s captains have done for this team in 2024.

“So much of Nick’s leadership shows up with the offensive line, the toughness, the line of scrimmage, and he is an absolute warrior.” Allegretti came to Washington this offseason, following his first five seasons in Kansas City.

“Defensively, it’d be [S] Jeremy Chinn. And I just see this growing taking place with Jeremy. He’s selfless, confident, and communicates well on the sideline. Chinn, still only 26, was selected No. 64 by the Panthers in the 2020 NFL draft. After his four seasons with the Panthers, he signed with Washington as a free agent last March.

Regarding a fan favorite in Jeremy Reaves, “This dude is revered here, both on the grass and off and on it. He’s an absolute slayer, so we love the energy that he brings and all this stuff. So, that is good.” Reaves is in his seventh NFL season, all with Washington. He was voted to the Pro Bowl as the Special Teams player for his play during the 2022 season.

Prior to the start of the regular season, Quinn announced he would not have team captains for the season. Instead, he would name captains on a week-to-week basis. He feels this can be an ongoing motivation throughout the season.

Oklahoma Sooners captains for South Carolina Gamecocks

On Monday, Oklahoma released their captains for week 8 against the South Carolina Gamecocks.

The Oklahoma Sooners need a rebound performance this weekend against South Carolina. After their 34-3 loss to Texas, the best way to cleanse the soul would be a complete performance against the Gamecocks.

Leading the way for the Sooners this week are captains Danny Stutsman, Troy Everett, Gracen Halton, Jayden Jackson, and Luke Elzinga.

Danny Stutsman is the heartbeat of the defense. He and the defensive side of the ball hope to have a bounceback week against a good, young quarterback in LaNorris Sellers.

He’s joined as a captain by fellow defensive standouts, defensive tackles Gracen Halton and Jayden Jackson.

Halton is putting together a breakout season in 2024. He’s second on the team in sacks and third on the team in pressures. He was playing well early in the game against Texas, creating pressure and had a huge stop on third down chasing Ewers who was scrambling.

Jackson has been a huge bright spot for the defense, starting from day one at defensive tackle, and is third among interior defensive linemen in snaps. He’s 12th on the defense in snaps and has the seventh-highest run defense grade this season.

Everett is the lone offensive starter. Troy Everett made his return to the lineup against Texas and was one of the few bright spots from the loss. He earned the third-highest grade from Pro Football Focus on Saturday.

And last but not least is Luke Elzinga, who’s been arguably the most consistent player on the roster through six games. His punting has been a key factor in the Sooners ability to play the field position battle. Even when Oklahoma’s offense hasn’t been able to move the ball, the Sooners have been able to rely on Elzinga’s leg to flip the field.

Who are the Commanders’ captains for Week 6?

Who are the Week 6 captains and which jerseys will Commanders wear vs. Ravens?

The Washington Commanders revealed their game captains for Sunday’s Week 6 showdown against the Baltimore Ravens.

  • DT Daron Payne
  • RT Andrew Wylie
  • LS Tyler Ott

Head coach Dan Quinn discussed the Week 6 captains on Friday.

Start off by giving you the captains as we get started for this week’s game,” Quinn said. “Offense will be Andrew Wylie, and defensively be Daron Payne and on special teams Tyler Ott. All these guys bring unique stuff to our team. Kinda talked about the consistency of Andrew, the length he’s willing to go for these guys and all the toughness. With Daron, we thought of the word is he’s got a real edge about him and that focus, and we love that he brings it. And then Tyler, always at the front and center of stuff, but just really, really high standards about how he goes about his stuff. So, a lot of respect for those three and they’ll lead the way Sunday.”

In addition to the captains, the Commanders also revealed their uniform combination for Sunday’s showdown in Charm City.

It will be white jerseys and burgundy pants for the Commanders against the Ravens.

Washington looks to improve to 5-1 against the 3-2 Ravens.

Commanders reveal Week 2 captains and a franchise legend will be honored vs. Giants

Captains for Week 2 are in and the team will honor former tight end on Sunday.

Washington Commanders head coach Dan Quinn abandoned the traditional method of naming team captains ahead of the season and chose weekly captains.

“We’ll be using game captains, and I’ll also utilize a group of some leaders that will be kind of with me on some decisions that or emphasis that I wanna make with the team,” Quinn said earlier this month. “But, we’ll pick game captains until the postseason, and then we’ll pick postseason captains. That’ll be throughout.”

In Week 1, star wide receiver Terry McLaurin was one of Washington’s three captains, along with defensive end Clelin Ferrell and safety Jeremy Reaves. McLaurin and Reaves have been captains in Washington prior to this season.

It’s Friday, so the Commanders revealed captains for their home opener on Sunday against the New York Giants.

  • C Tyler Biadasz
  • LB Frankie Luvu
  • S/special teams ace Percy Butler

Quinn revealed in his Friday press conference the team went crazy when Butler was revealed as one of the captains. The third-year safety has been excellent on special teams since being drafted in 2022 and has been trusted with more responsibility at safety under the new coaching staff.

The Commanders will also honor Vernon Davis, a Washington, D.C. native and former tight end, as their “legend of the game.”

Davis, who played at Dunbar High in D.C., enjoyed a successful college career at Maryland before the 49ers selected him as the No. 6 overall pick in the 2006 NFL draft. Davis spent 9 1/2 seasons in San Francisco before he was traded to the Broncos midway through the 2015 season. Davis earned a Super Bowl ring during his short stint in Denver and signed with his hometown Redskins in 2016.

Davis played the final four seasons of his NFL career in Washington. Davis caught 583 passes for 7,562 yards and 63 touchdowns for his career.

Since retirement, Davis has remained busy as an actor, philanthropist and author.
