Dan Quinn announces Commanders’ captains vs Eagles

The Eagles will see a familiar face as one of the Commanders’ captains.

Dan Quinn Wednesday named his captains for Thursday night’s Commanders game in Philadelphia.

The game is big, as the Eagles (7-2) host the Commanders (7-3) from Lincoln Financial Field.

As has been Quinn’s custom this season, he named three captains, one each for offense, defense, and special teams.

Talking with the press, Quinn announced the Week 11 captains would be TE Zach Ertz and CB Mike Sainristil, and on special teams, it will be RB Jeremy McNichols, whom Quinn has been heard to call “J-Mack.”

“And all these guys, man, they bring a lot to our team in lots of different ways and standards and competing. And so we’re all pumped to see these guys get this up.”

Ertz is the second-leading receiver for the Commanders this season, with 37 receptions for 381 yards and one receiving touchdown. More importantly, Ertz has 19 receptions, which have converted 19 first downs.

McNichols has filled in nicely for Brian Robinson when Robinson has been ailing with knee and hamstring issues. McNichols has four rushing touchdowns and 190 yards on 38 carries for a 5.0 yards per carry average.

Sainristil has shown flexibility and adaptability when playing both slot and outside corner. The rookie from NCAA champion Michigan recorded the first Commanders’ interception of 2024 against the Ravens.

Quinn names Commanders’ Week 8 game captains

Dan Quinn with the ultimate praise for Jeremy Reaves.

Washington head coach Dan Quinn actually had some news Friday, other than Jayden Daniels.

As usual, on Friday, Quinn announced the captains for the upcoming weekend’s game. Friday, with the press, Quinn announced his captains for Sunday’s home 4:25 kickoff against the Bears would be G Nick Allegretti, S Jeremy Chinn, and S Jeremy Reaves.

Quinn then elaborated on what each of this week’s captains have done for this team in 2024.

“So much of Nick’s leadership shows up with the offensive line, the toughness, the line of scrimmage, and he is an absolute warrior.” Allegretti came to Washington this offseason, following his first five seasons in Kansas City.

“Defensively, it’d be [S] Jeremy Chinn. And I just see this growing taking place with Jeremy. He’s selfless, confident, and communicates well on the sideline. Chinn, still only 26, was selected No. 64 by the Panthers in the 2020 NFL draft. After his four seasons with the Panthers, he signed with Washington as a free agent last March.

Regarding a fan favorite in Jeremy Reaves, “This dude is revered here, both on the grass and off and on it. He’s an absolute slayer, so we love the energy that he brings and all this stuff. So, that is good.” Reaves is in his seventh NFL season, all with Washington. He was voted to the Pro Bowl as the Special Teams player for his play during the 2022 season.

Prior to the start of the regular season, Quinn announced he would not have team captains for the season. Instead, he would name captains on a week-to-week basis. He feels this can be an ongoing motivation throughout the season.

Oklahoma Sooners captains for South Carolina Gamecocks

On Monday, Oklahoma released their captains for week 8 against the South Carolina Gamecocks.

The Oklahoma Sooners need a rebound performance this weekend against South Carolina. After their 34-3 loss to Texas, the best way to cleanse the soul would be a complete performance against the Gamecocks.

Leading the way for the Sooners this week are captains Danny Stutsman, Troy Everett, Gracen Halton, Jayden Jackson, and Luke Elzinga.

Danny Stutsman is the heartbeat of the defense. He and the defensive side of the ball hope to have a bounceback week against a good, young quarterback in LaNorris Sellers.

He’s joined as a captain by fellow defensive standouts, defensive tackles Gracen Halton and Jayden Jackson.

Halton is putting together a breakout season in 2024. He’s second on the team in sacks and third on the team in pressures. He was playing well early in the game against Texas, creating pressure and had a huge stop on third down chasing Ewers who was scrambling.

Jackson has been a huge bright spot for the defense, starting from day one at defensive tackle, and is third among interior defensive linemen in snaps. He’s 12th on the defense in snaps and has the seventh-highest run defense grade this season.

Everett is the lone offensive starter. Troy Everett made his return to the lineup against Texas and was one of the few bright spots from the loss. He earned the third-highest grade from Pro Football Focus on Saturday.

And last but not least is Luke Elzinga, who’s been arguably the most consistent player on the roster through six games. His punting has been a key factor in the Sooners ability to play the field position battle. Even when Oklahoma’s offense hasn’t been able to move the ball, the Sooners have been able to rely on Elzinga’s leg to flip the field.

Who are the Commanders’ captains for Week 6?

Who are the Week 6 captains and which jerseys will Commanders wear vs. Ravens?

The Washington Commanders revealed their game captains for Sunday’s Week 6 showdown against the Baltimore Ravens.

  • DT Daron Payne
  • RT Andrew Wylie
  • LS Tyler Ott

Head coach Dan Quinn discussed the Week 6 captains on Friday.

Start off by giving you the captains as we get started for this week’s game,” Quinn said. “Offense will be Andrew Wylie, and defensively be Daron Payne and on special teams Tyler Ott. All these guys bring unique stuff to our team. Kinda talked about the consistency of Andrew, the length he’s willing to go for these guys and all the toughness. With Daron, we thought of the word is he’s got a real edge about him and that focus, and we love that he brings it. And then Tyler, always at the front and center of stuff, but just really, really high standards about how he goes about his stuff. So, a lot of respect for those three and they’ll lead the way Sunday.”

In addition to the captains, the Commanders also revealed their uniform combination for Sunday’s showdown in Charm City.

It will be white jerseys and burgundy pants for the Commanders against the Ravens.

Washington looks to improve to 5-1 against the 3-2 Ravens.

Commanders reveal Week 2 captains and a franchise legend will be honored vs. Giants

Captains for Week 2 are in and the team will honor former tight end on Sunday.

Washington Commanders head coach Dan Quinn abandoned the traditional method of naming team captains ahead of the season and chose weekly captains.

“We’ll be using game captains, and I’ll also utilize a group of some leaders that will be kind of with me on some decisions that or emphasis that I wanna make with the team,” Quinn said earlier this month. “But, we’ll pick game captains until the postseason, and then we’ll pick postseason captains. That’ll be throughout.”

In Week 1, star wide receiver Terry McLaurin was one of Washington’s three captains, along with defensive end Clelin Ferrell and safety Jeremy Reaves. McLaurin and Reaves have been captains in Washington prior to this season.

It’s Friday, so the Commanders revealed captains for their home opener on Sunday against the New York Giants.

  • C Tyler Biadasz
  • LB Frankie Luvu
  • S/special teams ace Percy Butler

Quinn revealed in his Friday press conference the team went crazy when Butler was revealed as one of the captains. The third-year safety has been excellent on special teams since being drafted in 2022 and has been trusted with more responsibility at safety under the new coaching staff.

The Commanders will also honor Vernon Davis, a Washington, D.C. native and former tight end, as their “legend of the game.”

Davis, who played at Dunbar High in D.C., enjoyed a successful college career at Maryland before the 49ers selected him as the No. 6 overall pick in the 2006 NFL draft. Davis spent 9 1/2 seasons in San Francisco before he was traded to the Broncos midway through the 2015 season. Davis earned a Super Bowl ring during his short stint in Denver and signed with his hometown Redskins in 2016.

Davis played the final four seasons of his NFL career in Washington. Davis caught 583 passes for 7,562 yards and 63 touchdowns for his career.

Since retirement, Davis has remained busy as an actor, philanthropist and author.

Commanders reveal captains for Week 1

Washington names captains for Week 1.

Washington Commanders head coach Dan Quinn recently revealed that instead of naming captains for the 2024 season, he would do them weekly ahead of each game.

On Friday, the Commanders revealed their Week 1 captains for Sunday’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers:

  • Wide receiver Terry McLaurin
  • Defensive end Clelin Ferrell
  • Safety Jeremy Reaves

McLaurin and Reaves have been captains with Washington before and, along with Jonathan Allen, are among the most respected holdovers in the locker room. Ferrell is in his first year with the Commanders after spending the 2023 season with the San Francisco 49ers.

For those wondering about Allen and future Hall of Famer Bobby Wagner, they will also have their turns at being captains, too.

Washington and Tampa Bay kick off the season at 4:25 p.m. ET on Sunday.

Packers won’t have permanent captains in 2024

Matt LaFleur said the Packers won’t have permanent, season-long captains in 2024.

Green Bay Packers coach Matt LaFleur said his team won’t have permanent captains during the 2024 season and was non-committal about doing week-by-week captains.

“We do not have permanent captains,” LaFleur said Tuesday.

Many teams around the NFL vote on captains and announce season-long captains before the start of the regular season. Designated captains get the captain “C” patch on their uniforms.

Asked if the Packers would do something on a week-to-week basis, LaFleur said, “We will see.”

It’s possible controversies involving Za’Darius Smith — who felt slighted he wasn’t voted as a season-long captain in 2021 — and Jaire Alexander — who went to midfield for the coin toss vs. the Carolina Panthers despite not being a captain, resulting in a suspension last year — impacted LaFleur’s decision to not have captains in 2024.

Likely captains would have been quarterback Jordan Love, defensive end Preston Smith, cornerback Jaire Alexander and possibly even newcomers Josh Jacobs and Xavier McKinney.

The Packers are flying to Brazil on Wednesday before opening the 2024 season on Friday against the Philadelphia Eagles.

The last time the Packers elected season-long captains was 2022, when quarterback Aaron Rodgers, running back Aaron Jones, tight end Marcedes Lewis, defensive lineman Kenny Clark, linebacker De’Vondre Campbell and safety Adrian Amos were voted captains. Only Clark remains on the Packers’ roster.

Last year, the Packers picked captains on a week-to-week basis.

The Lions name their team captains for 2024

The Lions name their team captains for 2024, including Aidan Hutchinson as a first-time captain

The Detroit Lions officially named six players as team captains for the 2024 season. For a strong contender with most of the primary players returning from a year ago, it was pretty easy to predict who would get selected to be captains for the coming year.

As selected by the players and coaches, the Lions captains for 2024:

  • QB Jared Goff
  • WR Amon-Ra St. Brown
  • RT Penei Sewell
  • EDGE Aidan Hutchinson
  • LB Alex Anzalone
  • LB Jalen Reeves-Maybin (special teams)

All but Hutchinson were team captains in 2023. No. 97 joins the captaincy circle, taking the place of now-departed veteran Charles Harris.

The Lions social media team had some fun with the announcement of the captains, as they are wont to do…

Oklahoma Sooners announce captains for week one vs. Temple

Oklahoma names Jackson Arnold, Billy Bowman, Danny Stutsman, and Bauer Sharp captains for week one vs. Temple.

The first game week of the season is at hand and the Oklahoma Sooners have announced their first set of captains for their week on matchup vs. Temple.

The Sooners select captains for each game during the regular season and then will select season captains when they get to the postseason.

Leading the Sooners into the game against Temple and into 2024 are the guys you’d expect to get a captain nod. Quarterback [autotag]Jackson Arnold[/autotag], linebacker [autotag]Danny Stutsman[/autotag], and safety [autotag]Billy Bowman[/autotag] represented the Sooners at SEC Media Days in July. They’ll be joined by transfer tight end [autotag]Bauer Sharp[/autotag], who has impressed this offseason with his work ethic, attitude, and physicality.

Stutsman and Bowman are going into their fourth season with the Sooners. They were a part of Lincoln Riley’s final recruiting class in Norman but have become two of the most valuable pieces of the first three years of the Brent Venables era.

Stutsman and Bowman turned down an opportunity to go to the NFL for one more year at Oklahoma and a swim through the SEC. SEC media and coaches have taken note of the development of Oklahoma’s defensive stars, voting the dynamic duo to the preseason All-SEC first team.

They’ll be relied upon as the Sooners enter the SEC. Their experience and playmaking ability is a part of what has so many optimistic about the potential of Oklahoma’s defense in 2024.

Arnold is entering his first year as a starter. The former five-star prospect and Gatorade National Player of the Year has all the tools to be one of the next great quarterbacks to wear the crimson and cream. Venables has praised Arnold’s leadership and work ethic this offseason as the Denton Guyer product takes over for [autotag]Dillon Gabriel[/autotag].

WATCH: Tress Way gets emotional discussing giving up No. 5 to Jayden Daniels

Tress Way talks giving up the No. 5 to Jayden Daniels.

There haven’t been a lot of constants surrounding the Washington NFL franchise since 2014. Two names do come to mind, though: Assistant coach and Washington’s all-time sacks leader Ryan Kerrigan and punter Tress Way.

There’s a difference between the two, as Kerrigan, who arrived in Washington as a first-round pick in 2011, left in 2021 to play his final NFL season with the Philadelphia Eagles. He returned to Washington the following season to begin his coaching career.

Way hasn’t left.

Undrafted out of Oklahoma in 2013, Way originally signed as an undrafted free agent with the Chicago Bears. He was waived that summer and didn’t play. In 2014, he re-signed with Chicago that offseason. Way was once again waived that summer.

However, this was where Way’s football career took a positive turn. The then-Washington Redskins claimed Way off waivers and he’s been with the team ever since. Way has survived multiple head coaches, general managers, name changes, quarterbacks, kickers and long snappers. One thing that has remained the same for Way is the constant losing.

Yet, for Way, there is nowhere else he’d rather be than with Washington.

On Thursday, Way went through a big change. He gave up his No. 5 jersey to rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels.

Giving up your number may not seem like a big deal to some, but when you’ve been with a franchise for as long as Way has, it hits differently. Way has raised his kids playing in Washington, made lifelong friends, became a valuable member of the community and was a multi-year team captain.

He joined the “Command Center” on Thursday to discuss giving up his number and how, at first, he didn’t want to do it, but thinking about the long-term future of the franchise he loves, he wanted Daniels to have it.

Way discussed first arriving in Washington, feeling wanted for the first time, and picking the No. 5 jersey. He talked about being a four-time captain and how if he is voted captain for a fifth time, the “C” on his jersey will be filled in, but with a different number.

In discussing the jersey situation with his wife, Way gained perspective about why he was named a captain in the first place. Then, thought about Daniels, being a rookie with a ton of pressure on him, in addition to all the excitement surrounding the organization.

“I just feel like there’s just so much excitement around this organization, hands down the most I have ever seen,” Way said. “All of the excitement is building and building and building. I just feel like this is…………a very small part that I could do.”

Way said much more, and we’d encourage you to watch the entire episode

Regardless of how he arrived at the decision, Way, as always, was looking out for his teammates. Now you know why he is beloved. Safety Jeremy Reaves, a close friend of Way’s, took to X to share his thoughts.

No one has ever said a bad word about Tress Way. And save your “he’s just a punter, bro” tweets. Way loves the Washington organization. He understood the big picture that No. 5 would mean more on the rookie quarterback than him.

Way discussed how great general manager Adam Peters and head coach Dan Quinn have been since arriving.

It’s days like Thursday when you realize why Way is a team captain.
