Michigan football is just days away from its first foray into the College Football Playoff as the semifinal game against Georgia in the Capital One Orange Bowl in Miami Gardens is set for Friday evening.

Though much of the national media and Vegas aren’t giving the Wolverines much of a chance, there’s a quiet confidence brewing from the maize and blue, and it isn’t limited to those currently on the team.

WolverinesWire polled several former Michigan players as to what they anticipate will happen on Friday night at Hard Rock Stadium, and there’s a solid feeling among those who previously wore the winged helmet. While we will continue to update this list with more former player predictions (check back regularly) here is how they think the game will shake out with a national championship game appearance on the line.

Michigan offensive players confident with vaunted Georgia defense on-deck

Gotta love #Michigan’s confidence! #GoBlue

DANIA BEACH, Fla. — When it comes to the College Football Playoff semifinal of Michigan vs. Georgia, much of the talk is about how the Wolverine offense will fare against the Bulldog defense. But if you ask the maize and blue players, they’re confident in their abilities, especially because of the award-winning offensive line that Michigan has.

“Yeah, we’re well aware that especially their front in their box is very talented, but I think the heart and soul of our offense is our O-line, and I think if anyone in the country is going to block them, it’s going to be our dudes,” quarterback Cade McNamara said. “I think we size up well to them, and I think obviously they’ll be a good challenge, but we’re looking forward to it.”

[lawrence-related id=55866,55863,55855]

“We know they’ve got a good front seven, but we’ve got a good O-line, you know,” running back Haskins said. “So it’s going to be a fun, physical game. I like them type of games, so it’s going to determine who wants the game the most. We’re going to see on Friday.”

As far as the offensive line is concerned, they also feel that while Georgia presents a challenge defensively, it’s still about what the Joe Moore winners fare in the game.

“They’re a great defensive front. We’ve played a lot of great defensive fronts this whole year,” right tackle Andrew Stueber said. “We’ve prepared great for them, as well, and we’ve tackled them well I’d say. It’s something that we’ve taken a lot of emphasis on. We’ve had a lot of time to dissect and deconstruct what it is they do. They’re really well-coached, they play hard, they rotate a lot, they have some great schemes, some great fronts, some great movement, but at the end of the day it’s something that we focus on ourselves. I think Cade said it before, the offensive line is the heartbeat of this team, so we take that on our shoulders every day to start moving the ball, moving the line of scrimmage, and so it really starts with us. They’re a great front, but we just have to play Michigan football, play our game, play what has gotten us here right now, and I think we’ll do just fine.”

Michigan and Georgia will kick off on Friday, Dec. 31 at 7:30 p.m. EST at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens. The game will be broadcast nationally on ESPN.

Georgia vs Michigan Capital One Orange Bowl, College Football Playoff Semifinal Preview

Oh are the respective fan bases ready for this. Georgia hasn’t won a national title since 1980, it came brutally close to close out the 2017 season, and now it’s back and two wins away from finally getting it done.

Michigan hasn’t won a national championship since 1997, and even then it was split with Nebraska.

After years of being hammered for not being able to win a really big game under Jim Harbaugh, the program came up with two in a row with the breakthrough moment against Ohio State and the blowout Big Ten Championship over Iowa, and now it’s a victory away from playing for the national championship.

Michigan received just 12 votes in the preseason AP Top 25 rankings. No, it wasn’t ranked 12th – it got 12 votes, ranking behind Liberty and just ahead of Northwestern. It wasn’t ranked in the preseason Coaches Poll top 25, either.

With a power style on both sides of the ball – and enough timely downfield passes to get by – this isn’t as flashy team. It wants to get physical.

The program and Harbaugh have earned respect no matter what happens here, but there’s been just one bowl win since taking down Tim Tebow and Florida to end the 2007 season going 1-6 in bowls since then.

– Georgia has won six of its last eight bowl games and is 4-2 under head coach Kirby Smart. There wasn’t any lack of respect from the preseason polls – ranked fifth in each – before becoming the unquestioned No. 1 team right up until it lost to Alabama in the SEC Championship.

The defense is loaded with NFL talent, the offense is loaded with NFL talent, and this game might just become a key moment for Smart and the Bulldogs.

Smart has shown he can get the Dawgs close to being among the elite of the elite, but lose this to close out with two straight defeats, and everything that happened in the amazing 2021 will be soured.

What Mike Macdonald said about Michigan football’s defense vs. Georgia

The Michigan defense against the Georgia offense is an underrated matchup.

DANIA BEACH, Fla. — While most pundits are dissecting the possibilities in the Capital One Orange Bowl, pitting Michigan against Georgia, about the Wolverine offense against the Bulldog defense, potentially as big of a matchup will be between the Michigan defense against the Georgia offense.

A native son of the school in Athens, Mike Macdonald will be coaching in his first bowl game as an on-field coach against his alma mater. On Tuesday, Macdonald met with the media to discuss the College Football Playoff semifinal matchup, why his defense has had success in 2021, and what he expects to see from his opposition come Friday.

Georgia defensive players break down challenge Michigan’s offense poses

It’ll be a huge battle up front. #GoBlue

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbzardvge799bm2 player_id=01eqbvp13nn1gy6hd4 image=https://wolverineswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

DANIA BEACH, Fla. — It’s a misconception that Michigan football’s offense is all ground and pound. Yes, the Wolverines want to run the ball, but U-M boasts the most explosive plays over 50 yards in all of college football. And it gets it done both on the ground and through the air.

Of course, Michigan will run if it knows it can win the game doing so. But as we’ve seen in other games — Wisconsin, Michigan State, Maryland — the Wolverines will throw if that’s something that the defense gives.

Now, Georgia’s defense gives very little. It’s statistically among the top defenses in the country and advanced analytics sites like PFF feature the Bulldogs as No. 1. However, UGA fell apart on that side of the ball against Alabama in the SEC Championship Game. Naturally, the maize and blue are hoping to replicate that success while Georgia is looking for a return to dominance.

It’ll be easier said than done, of course. Michigan’s offensive elite won the Joe Moore Award, and the Wolverines will likely feature the most physical front that the Dawgs have seen all year.

Star defensive tackle Jordan Davis is leery of the Wolverine front, saying there’s really no other team that Georgia has faced that he can compare it to.

“They’re definitely a physical team, and it’s a tremendous challenge for our front seven,” Davis said. “In comparison, I can’t really compare them. Each team is different. But we’re excited to play them. We’re excited for the challenge. We’re just ready to get out there.”

[lawrence-related id=55863,55855]

The secondary could have its issues, as well. As mentioned, the Wolverines don’t pass much, but when they do, explosive plays are often the result.

Safety Lewis Cine is particularly familiar with one Michigan player, Mike Sainristil, as the two were high school teammates at Everett (Mass.) High School, and remain close friends to this day. When he looks at the maize and blue’s success, he doesn’t think it’s strictly due to Josh Gattis’ scheme or anything — it’s a result of elite players making elite plays.

“For one it’s definitely the players, the players they have,” Cine said. “A team wouldn’t be what they are without good players. They have some really good, explosive players from offense, running backs, slot receivers, tight ends, even their quarterbacks. The players make the majority of who they are, and then good coaching with their head coach, receiving coordinators coaching, a lot of those guys I’m familiar with. So it all comes to those two factors really.”

We’ll see which side wins the battle on Dec. 31 when the Wolverines and Bulldogs face off in the Capital One Orange Bowl in Miami Gardens.

What Josh Gattis said about Michigan football vs. Georgia in the College Football Playoff

Will #Michigan’s offense have success on Georgia’s defense? #GoBlue

DANIA BEACH, Fla. — The talk of the College Football Playoff semifinal games isn’t the Crimson Tide vs. Cincinnati. It’s the matchup between the Michigan offense against The Georgia Bulldog defense.

Though Josh Gattis’ offense is billed as a similar one to Georgia, that might be true stylistically, but the Wolverines feature the nation’s most explosive offense statistically, with 17 plays of 50 yards or more, leading the nation. The Bulldog defense, conversely, is as stout as they come, ranking behind only Wisconsin defense in total yardage allowed, but boasting the nation’s top scoring defense.

Obviously, Gattis is ready, presumably with some tricks up his sleeve. Here’s everything he said about the matchup on Monday.

What Georgia defensive coordinator Dan Lanning said about Michigan football

It’ll be interesting to see how Michigan football’s offense does against the UGA defensive attack. #GoBlue

DANIA BEACH, Fla. — Day 1 of the media aspect of the Capital One Orange Bowl and College Football Playoff semifinal has begun in earnest, and it’s started with the Georgia side of things on Monday morning.

While a few Bulldogs defensive players met with the media via Zoom, perhaps most instructive on UGA’s vaunted defensive attack comes from Dan Lanning, the outgoing defensive coordinator who will be Oregon’s new head coach after the season is over.

He’s well aware of Michigan’s success on the ground, the offensive line’s dominance, the Wolverines’ explosiveness, and the all-around, well-rounded nature of the offensive attack.

We extrapolated what Lanning said about the maize and blue from his overall meeting with the press. Here’s what he had to say about Michigan football.

‘Nothing is going to stop me” – Michigan players focused on Georgia now that they’re in Florida

Loving this attitude! #GoBlue

The College Football Playoff is less than a week away, and Michigan football is the first of the two teams to arrive in South Florida for the Capital One Orange Bowl.

Considering 2020’s moribund 2-4 campaign, it shouldn’t be beyond the maize and blue faithful to pinch themselves. But that’s not how these players see it.

Upon landing in Fort Lauderdale, quarterback Cade McNamara said this isn’t just what he and the team envisioned for 2021, but it’s what he anticipated when he committed to the Wolverines out of Reno (Nev.) Damonte Ranch.

“Yeah this is what I envisioned when I decided to come here to Michigan,” McNamara said. “These are the type of games that we commit to. The success that we’re having this season, this is what we envisioned. I’m super excited and I know the rest of the team is for this week and the upcoming events.”

[vertical-gallery id=55853]

The Wolverines have been practicing in earnest now for nearly two weeks, and while there have been some who have worried whether or not the momentum could continue from Ohio State and Iowa games, McNamara has no doubt based on what he’s seen in practice thus far.

“I think we’ve honestly done a really good job of picking right up where we left off at the Big Ten
Championship over the last couple of weeks in practice,” McNamara said. “I think as we come back here as the environment shifts just a little bit, I think myself and the other leaders on this team are just going to do the best we can to make sure that that momentum carries into practice because however we practice it’ll reflect to how we play in the game.”

When it comes to Georgia, though a lot of the talk has been about the defense, the Bulldog offense has been among the top in the nation, ranked sixth in scoring and No. 26 in yards per game.

Senior defensive end and team captain Aidan Hutchinson is more concerned with what the Wolverines can do defensively compared to the personnel or scheme that UGA presents.

“They have a talented offense and a lot of solid players,” Hutchinson said. “But I think if we just execute and just do our jobs and don’t get too hyped up in the moment, we’re going to be just fine, and I think we’ll have a lot of success if we just hone in and focus on our jobs and don’t let the moment get too big.”

While it will be a difference for this team given that it’s coming from cold weather, whereas Georgia is more moderate, is how it will be affected by weather in the 80s. Michigan has been practicing indoors since resuming, and will take full advantage of the added time in the Miami area to get acclimated.

As far as Hutchinson is concerned, the team will be ready to go on Friday, and he’s particularly confident in his own ability to wreak havoc on the opposing line.

“It’s nice being out here and definitely going to have to get used to it at first for a little bit,” Hutchinson said. “Come Friday we’re rolling, and nothing is going to stop me.”

The Capital One Orange Bowl kicks off on Dec. 31 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens at 7:30 p.m. EST.

Two Georgia players in COVID protocol nine days before College Football Playoff

You never want to see this.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbzardvge799bm2 player_id=01eqbvp13nn1gy6hd4 image=https://wolverineswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

On Tuesday, Michigan football right tackle Andrew Stueber said that no Wolverines are positive for COVID-19, that the team is taking enhanced precautionary measures, and that there would be a team-wide booster shot on Wednesday.

Things appear to be a little different in Athens.

There had been talk about whether or not former five-star quarterback JT Daniels could take the reins for former walk-on and current starter Stetson Bennett IV against the maize and blue in the Capital One Orange Bowl. Additionally, the Bulldogs just got star receiver George Pickens back for the regular season finale after he tore his ACL in the spring. Now both appear to be in jeopardy for the College Football Playoff semifinal.

As first reported by DawgNation, both Daniels and Pickens are in the COVID protocol, strongly endangering their chance to play in the Dec. 31 game against Michigan.

Georgia quarterback JT Daniels and receiver George Pickens are among UGA players who have been placed in COVID protocol, per sources. Daniels is vaccinated but Pickens’ vaccination status is unknown.

The Georgia football medical staff will be offering its players booster shots on Wednesday amid the recent surge in COVID-related cases across the sports landscape. Coach Kirby Smart is not expected to be made available to the media to update player statuses until the team arrives in South Florida on Sunday.

[lawrence-related id=55656,55654,55649]

The Dec. 31 game will be the third time the two programs have met. They’ve played twice, in 1957 and 1965, both times in Ann Arbor and each has a win a piece.

While the football program hasn’t had any COVID-related issues since last year, Michigan basketball recently saw a game canceled on Tuesday due to its opponent, Purdue Fort Wayne, having players in protocol.

The Capital One Orange Bowl is set to kickoff at 7:30 p.m. EST at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens on New Year’s Eve.

10 bold predictions: Michigan football vs. Georgia in Capital One Orange Bowl

If all goes to plan here, Michigan football will survive and advance!

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbzardvge799bm2 player_id=01eqbvp13nn1gy6hd4 image=https://wolverineswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

While it might not have been the draw that most had wanted, Michigan football found its way into the College Football Playoff, where it will take on a Georgia team in the Capital One Orange Bowl semi-final that most believed was unbeatable for much of the season.

Still, it’s a matchup between blue bloods, and certainly the more intriguing of the two semi-final games.

While there are some who believe the Wolverines will win this game, others aren’t giving the maize and blue a chance, based on Georgia’s reputation. We’re leaning towards picking Michigan in this one, though we haven’t made our final predictions just yet. But, with that in mind, here are 10 bold predictions we anticipate happening on Dec. 31 between the two teams that are evenly matched on paper.
