Candlestick Chronicles: Rewatching when 49ers-Seahawks rivalry began

The 49ers and Seahawks rivalry really took off on Christmas Eve, 2011.

The 49ers and Seahawks’ rivalry didn’t begin right when Seattle entered the NFC West in 2002. It’s since grown into perhaps the fiercest rivalry in the division, and at one time was among the NFL’s best head-to-head showdowns. There’s a specific game that can be circled as the catalyst for that rivalry — Week 16 of the 2011 season.

Chris Biderman of the Sacramento Bee and Kyle Madson rewatched that Christmas Eve matchup between the 49ers and Seahawks for the newest episode of Candlestick Chronicles.

It was a wild, back and forth affair that had all the makings of a burgeoning rivalry, even if the Seahawks weren’t quite on par with the 49ers in that 2011 season. Chris and Kyle discuss the key players, key plays, and all the warning signs that the 49ers and Seahawks would be must-see TV for the following couple of seasons. They also have some fun looking back on some of the things going on during the 2011 season.

Candlestick Chronicles: George Kittle’s contract and a good group of linebackers

The George Kittle contract extension continues to hang over the 49ers’ offseason. Chris and Kyle preview the 49ers’ linebacker depth chart.

A couple of big-money signings around the NFL put more light on the 49ers’ ongoing negotiations with George Kittle on a long-term contract extension. However, Chris Jones’ deal with the Chiefs and Myles Garrett’s deal with the Browns are both a little different situations than Kittle with the 49ers.

Chris Biderman of the Sacramento Bee and Kyle Madson dive into the Kittle contract and reasons it hasn’t gotten done yet on the latest episode of Candlestick Chronicles. The guys also continue their depth chart preview with a look at the 49ers’ very good group of linebackers.

While the starting group appears to have spots locked down, there are some battles behind the trio of starters that should be interesting to watch in camp.

Candlestick Chronicles: Cam Newton signs, 49ers DL breakdown

Chris and Kyle discuss Cam Newton signing with the Patriots, and look over the 49ers’ defensive line depth chart.

The world of NFL news got a jolt in late June when news came down that veteran quarterback Cam Newton would be signing with the New England Patriots. The 49ers face Newton and the Patriots in Week 7 of the 2020 season.

Chris Biderman of the Sacramento Bee and Kyle Madson take a look at the Newton signing, what it means for the league, and how the signal caller impacts the 49ers’ showdown with the Patriots in Foxborough this year.

The guys also continue their depth chart breakdown with a look at the 49ers’ defensive line. While the lead group doesn’t have many question marks, the rest of the depth chart has plenty of intrigue while San Francisco aims to build one of the NFL’s most dominant defensive fronts for a second consecutive season.

Candlestick Chronicles: Kyle Shanahan contract extension, and o-line depth

Chris and Kyle discuss the Kyle Shanahan contract extension, and the 49ers deep offensive line group.

Kyle Shanahan’s contract extension wasn’t a surprise. The timing of the announcement was. Adam Schefter on Monday afternoon reported that the 49ers and their head coach agreed to a six-year deal that would keep him in San Francisco through the 2025 season.

Chris Biderman of the Sacramento Bee and Kyle Madson took a look at the Shanahan contract, the timing, and what this means long term for the coach and the organization.

The guys also continue their look at the 90-man roster with a breakdown of the offensive line. They go over the battle for the starting right guard spot and analyze what might be the deepest unit on the 49ers’ roster.

Candlestick Chronicles: Rewatching 49ers win over Giants in 2012 NFC championship preview

Chris and Kyle rewatch the 49ers’ 2011 win over the Giants in a 2012 NFC championship preview on the 49ers podcast, Candlestick Chronicles.

The 49ers in Week 10 of the 2011 season put some distance between themselves and the New York Giants in the race for a first-round bye and home field advantage in the playoffs. The Giants entered their game in San Francisco at 6-2, while the 49ers sat at 7-1 — both clubs were looking up at the 8-0 Green Bay Packers.

The home team pulled out a thrilling 27-20 win in a back-and-forth game that, in retrospect, made it clear that these two teams were bound to square off again in the playoffs.

Chris Biderman of the Sacramento Bee and Kyle Madson rewatched that Week 10, 2011 showdown between the 49ers and Giants and discussed it on the Candlestick Chronicles podcast.

The guys go over the NFC championship game foreshadowing that happens, Alex Smith’s strong showing, and some of the other aspects of the contest that stood out. They also dive into some of the television elements that stood out during the broadcast.

Candlestick Chronicles: Rewatching the infamous ‘handshake game’ in Detroit

The San Francisco 49ers got a huge, ugly win over the Lions before Jim Harbaugh and Jim Schwartz’s infamous handshake.

Jim Harbaugh and Jim Schwartz’s postgame handshake and the skirmish that followed overshadowed an important 49ers win at Detroit in Week 6 of the 2011 season. The 4-1 49ers knocked off the 5-0 Lions to notch their fourth win in a row and take a commanding lead a struggling NFC West.

Chris Biderman of the Sacramento Bee and Kyle Madson dove back into that now-infamous game in the latest episode of Candlestick Chronicles. The handshake followed a sloppy contest full of penalties, turnovers, and sputtering offenses. It wasn’t pretty, but San Francisco got a big win.

Rewatching 49ers’ signature win in Philadelphia to kickstart 2011 playoff run

The San Francisco 49ers began their 2011 playoff run in earnest when they rallied from 20 points down to knock off the ‘Dream Team’ Eagles.

The 49ers entered Week 4 of the 2011 season with a 2-1 record after a pair of relatively unimpressive wins and an overtime loss to start the year. A Week 4 trip to Philadelphia against the ‘Dream Team’ Eagles was by far their biggest test of the first quarter of the year, and would offer a measuring stick for where San Francisco stood among the NFL’s best.

Chris Biderman of the Sacramento Bee and Kyle Madson sat down for ‘The Old Rush,’ where they rewatch old 49ers games starting with the Jim Harbaugh era in 2011. The guys dove into that Week 4 showdown with the Eagles and relived one of the signature victories of the 49ers’ 2011 campaign.

Candlestick Chronicles: A 49ers beat writer almost gets arrested

Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle joins Chris and Kyle to chat about the 49ers’ offseason, and the time he almost got arrested.

One of the occupational hazards of covering an NFL team is apparently getting threatened with arrest. The San Francisco Chronicles Eric Branch found that out the hard way the night before the 49ers’ Week 12 game at Tampa Bay back in 2018.

Branch joined Chris Biderman of the Sacramento Bee and Kyle Madson to recount his tale of getting threatened with arrest by an irate hotel manager in Tampa. He also gives some other fun stories about his life as a beat writer, and discusses the incoming rookie class, Jimmy Garoppolo and the 49ers’ offseason.

Rewatching Ted Ginn Jr.’s takeover of Jim Harbaugh’s NFL head coaching debut

It’s Jim Harbaugh, Pete Carroll and the birth of the 49ers-Seahawks rivalry on Candlestick Chronicles, a San Francisco 49ers podcast.

The lack of live sports in the COVID-19 era has given rise to the ‘rewatch.’ While the NFL continues to move forward with plans to play its season on a normal schedule, cancellation of in-person offseason workouts has created a news vacuum even more expansive than the one that typically exists between the draft and training camp.

Chris Biderman of the Sacramento Bee and Kyle Madson began the ‘Old Rush’ on the latest edition of the Candlestick Chronicles podcast. They’re rewatching old 49ers games and breaking them down, beginning with Week 1 of the 2011 season when San Francisco hosted Pete Carroll and the Seahawks in Jim Harbaugh’s NFL debut.

The guys go over what happened in the game, then run through some categories and awards.

Candlestick Chronicles: 49ers bet big in NFL draft

The 49ers’ five-player NFL draft class represents a huge risk by the team.

The 49ers took an alternate tactic to the one many analysts thought they’d take in the draft. They didn’t make a substantial trade back from either the 13th or 31st pick, and instead traded up from No. 31 and went without a pick from Round 2 through Round 4.

Chris Biderman of the Sacramento Bee and Kyle Madson assess what the 49ers could’ve done differently and what the draft tells us about their team-building strategy. Ultimately their moves make sense, but Chris and Kyle go over the huge risk they took by not accumulating more mid-round picks.

The guys also chat about Joe Staley’s retirement presser, and take a. look at how the rest of the NFC West fared in the draft.
