John Crooks cements his Campbell legacy as Golfweek Fall Challenge marks his 100th title

Crooks has special feelings about Caledonia Golf and Fish Club.

John Crooks wonders if his personal feelings about Caledonia Golf and Fish Club have something to do with the success his Campbell women’s team has experienced there over the years.

“The first time I saw Caledonia,” he said, “it’s just one of my favorite golf courses anywhere.”

The Camels are a consistent contender at the Golfweek Fall Challenge, played annually at this scenic spot on Pawleys Island, South Carolina. Entering this year’s event, Campbell had won six team titles, with its first title coming in 2012, and finished runner-up twice.

Crooks’ personal history will be forever entwined with Caledonia after Campbells’ latest victory there on Sept. 10. It was Crooks’ 100th title with the Camels women’s team, a milestone that puts him into a very small club of women’s coaches with career victories in the triple digits. In fact, he and longtime Duke women’s golf coach Dan Brooks, with 143 career victories, are the only members.

Scoring: Golfweek Fall Challenge

“I’ve been doing it for quite a while,” Crooks said of his long coaching stint. “The first year we didn’t win anything and so there’s been 33 years to accumulate 100 and I’ve just been fortunate to be surrounded by some really good people.”

Crooks also oversees the men’s golf program at Campbell, and has guided that team to 61 team titles. The men competed at the Myrtle Beach Golf Trips Intercollegiate this week while the women were at Caledonia, so Crooks split his time between the tournaments.

Campbell’s women had to put the pedal down in the final round to reach this milestone victory for their coach. After 36 holes at Caledonia, they trailed North Carolina-Wilmington, the defending champion in this event, by three shots. The Seahawks are a team capable of going low, having blistered the opening holes at last spring’s National Golf Invitational before finishing runner-up there. Three players from that squad returned this week at the season opener.

The Camels began chipping away at their deficit immediately, with the squad’s counters playing the first three holes in 3 under. UNCW played them in 3 over.

“After about three or four holes, we started gaining momentum. Then they just started playing really well,” Crooks said of his team. “We made a lot of birdies today and we played well.”

The closing hole, a 377-yard par 4 with an approach shot over water, can present drama at Caledonia, but so can the par-4 16th, another tricky hole with a green protected by water on the right. They played as two of the three hardest scoring holes for the tournament. Campbell navigated them both in even par for a final test, but UNCW didn’t give up any ground there, either.

“We have had luck there, we’ve made some pars where we needed to and today they finished very well,” Crooks said. “I have a lot of respect for the 16th and 18th hole at Caledonia.”

Campbell was the only team under par in the final round, and the team’s 2-under 54-hole total left them five shots ahead of UNCW. Emma Bunch of New Mexico State won the individual title for her sixth win in her last seven starts, dating to last season.

Crooks’ team had no problem getting excited for their coach and his 100th victory. The Campbell campus in Buis Creek, North Carolina, is only 170 miles north of Pawleys Island, and initially they were ready to pile right back in the van and head home.

“I told them well it’s time for a celebratory meal and they said well we’ll just go back to campus and get something there,” Crooks said. “I said, No, no, no. We’re at Myrtle Beach. We’re going to find something to eat now’”

And so, the team sat down to a big Italian dinner fitting for the accomplishment.

Tennessee makes top-six for FCS Freshman All-American transfer

Tennessee football makes top-six for a FCS Freshman All-American transfer.

Former Campbell defensive back Myles Rowser announced his top-six teams on Thursday.

Tennessee, Colorado, New Mexico State, Penn State, LSU and Oregon are Rowser’s top-six schools.

The 6-foot-1, 190-pound defensive back is from Belleville High School in Detriot, Michigan.

As a true freshman in 2022, Rowser recorded 44 total tackles, one tackle for a loss, one interception and three pass breakups. He earned FCS Freshman All-American honors last season.

He signed with Campbell as a consensus four-star prospect in the class of 2022. He ranked as the No. 232 overall prospect and No. 4 player in Michigan, according to 247Sports composite rankings.

Rowser will have three years of eligibility remaining.

East Carolina vs Campbell Game Preview

Why Campbell Will Win

The Fighting Camels have enough of a defense to at least be plucky.

They struggled last week in the 37-21 loss to William & Mary, but it stuffed Citadel, it’s generating a decent pass rush, and it’s been okay at taking the ball away.

East Carolina isn’t getting behind the line enough, the offensive line hasn’t been anything great, and …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 3

Why East Carolina Will Win

The Pirates should be able to come up with a good enough balance to push through without a problem.

Campbell doesn’t control the tempo very well even with a decent ground game. The problem is the East Carolina defensive front – it’s doing a solid job against the run so far.

The pass defense has been excellent so far – that’s what happens when you play Citadel – but East Carolina has a nice rotation of backs with Keaton Mitchell ripping off yards in chunks.

Week 3 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Campbell will move the chains a bit and come up with a few scores, but East Carolina will be balanced and crisp after the first quarter.

The Pirates, though, haven’t had an easy time with FCS teams over the last few years – the blowout over Western Carolina in 2016 was the last layup. The team will wind down late, but there won’t be a whole lot of drama.

It’ll never seem like the Camels have the ball.

Kirby Connell recaps Tennessee’s win against Campbell

Kirby Connell recaps Tennessee’s win against Campbell.

No. 1 Tennessee (55-7) defeated Campbell, 12-7, Saturday in the NCAA Tournament Knoxville Regional at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.

Kirby Connell (4-0) pitched four innings for Tennessee. He recorded four strikeouts, while surrendering two walks, three hits and two runs.

“We expected a dog fight,” Connell said. “We’ve noticed what they’ve done throughout the season, and you look at the box scores throughout the year, and they can swing it very well, and they play really good defense. We knew it was going to be a dog fight coming into it, and we had a lot of guys that stood out and it really helped us pull it out.”

Connell entered the contest with Campbell winning 4-0 in the third inning.

“I came in a tough situation,” Connell said. “I’ve done that a couple times and it’s been good, and I’ve been able to get out of it.

“Basically, all I do is just let my defense play, keep them off guard with all different kinds of pitches and just let my defense play, and let the offense do what they do.”

Tony Vitello recaps Tennessee’s win against Campbell in Knoxville Regional

Tony Vitello recaps Tennessee’s win against Campbell in the Knoxville Regional.

No. 1 Tennessee (55-7) defeated Campbell, 12-7, Saturday in the NCAA Tournament Knoxville Regional at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.

The Vols have advanced to the Knoxville Regional championship game Sunday against the winner between Georgia Tech and Campbell.

Following the Vols’ win against Campbell, Tennessee head coach Tony Vitello met with media and discussed the game.

“If you were fortunate enough to have a ticket tonight, you got your money’s worth,” Vitello said. “That was a fight, and that was an NCAA Regional game, but that was like a championship-feel game from both squads. You can start with the two starting pitchers. Look at the box score, it’s not right. Starting with Do (Chase Dollander), we’re not in this situation without him. If you can hold down their lineup at any moment, you did well. He did it for the first two innings.

“Things unfolded in unfortunate fashion. He wasn’t going to be the same guy with that high pitch count, so we went and got him. Hopefully that answers another question. It opened up an opportunity—like we talked about with Chuck (Charlie Taylor) — for Kirby (Connell). The guys have each other’s backs, and then (Cade Kuehler), that box score doesn’t do him justice. I hope he can sleep well tonight. That was some freakish stuff. I don’t know how the box score reads what it does, but he pitched with a lot of heart. Neither one of those guys were scared, or blamed anybody, or did anything that you should be ashamed of. We were fortunate, maybe because we are playing at home, or Cortland Lawson is a competitor. I don’t know. We were just fortunate to win that thing.”
