Eagles to release Cameron Tom

The Philadelphia Eagles are releasing veteran center Cameron Tom ahead of Tuesday’s roster deadline

With Jason Kelce expected back for the season opener, the Philadelphia Eagles are releasing veteran center Cameron Tom per Aaron Wilson.

Tom began his NFL career in 2017 in New Orleans, spending most of the 2017 and 2018 seasons on the Saints’ practice squad before suffering an injury in 2019.

Tom signed with Miami in 2021, splitting time between the practice squad and the active roster.

Eagles sign 3 players as training camp opens

Philadelphia Eagles sign TE Jaden Graham, WR Lance Lenoir, and C Cameron Tom

The Philadelphia Eagles added three more players to the roster as training camp gets underway on Wednesday morning.

Before the first practice, the Birds announced the signing of tight end Jaden Graham, wide receiver Lance Lenoir, and center Cameron Tom.

Philadelphia also placed three players on the PUP list, as well as releasing rookie offensive tackle Jarrid Williams.

Dolphins make a slew of roster moves ahead of Week 17 matchup vs. the Titans

The Dolphins activated two off the COVID list, but they haven’t cleared protocols yet.

In preparation for their Week 17 matchup with the Tennessee Titans at Nissan Stadium, the Miami Dolphins announced eight roster moves on Saturday afternoon.

The Dolphins activated safety Adam Butler and safety Brandon Jones off the reserve/COVID list. They have yet to clear COVID protocols, but they needed to be removed from the list by 4 p.m. if they wanted a shot to play on Sunday.

Miami also placed cornerback Noah Igbinoghene and safety Sheldrick Redwine on the COVID list. They will miss this game, but they have been either inactive or playing a very small role in most games this season, so they won’t be much of a loss.

Linebacker Brennan Scarlett was removed from injured reserve. Scarlett had played 21% of available defensive snaps before suffering a knee injury in the first half of the Week 11 battle against the Jets.

Finally, the Dolphins elevated wide receiver Kirk Merritt and center Cameron Tom as COVID-19 replacements from the practice squad, and defensive back Chris Milton as a standard practice squad elevation.

The Dolphins kick off against the Titans on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Dolphins bring up WR Tommylee Lewis for revenge game vs. Saints

Dolphins bring up WR Tommylee Lewis, OL Cameron Tom for revenge game vs. Saints

Oh, here we go. The Miami Dolphins elevated two players from their practice squad as single-game replacements for teammates on the COVID-19 reserve list — and they’re both former members of the New Orleans Saints.

Let’s start with wide receiver Tommylee Lewis. He bounced on and off of the roster in New Orleans a number of times from 2016 to 2021 before trying out for other teams, having been released with an injury designation earlier this year.

Lewis played a bit part in the receiving corps and return game with the Saints, but his most notorious moment came as the targeted receiver in the 2018 NFC championship game no-call. There are still fans that would swear to you if he’d sold his response to the illegal contact better that the referees would have thrown a flag for it (I’m inclined to agree, though I understand the 168-pounder’s thinking to try a no-sell instead).

In any case, Lewis figures to return punts for Miami in the Caesars Superdome on Monday night. He’s totaled 409 punt return yards on 46 tries in his NFL career, all with New Orleans, with a personal-best of 59 yards on a single return back in 2016. The Saints will have their hands full without four of their top six special teamers in snaps played: J.T. Gray, Jeff Heath, Kaden Elliss, and Dwayne Washington (all of them in COVID protocol).

As for the other ex-Saint called up for Week 16: that’s offensive lineman Cameron Tom, the one-time understudy to Max Unger who was supplanted by the arrival of starting center Erik McCoy and his backup Will Clapp. Tom will be the next man up if something happens to Dolphins starter Michael Deiter. Curiously, Miami previously had another former Saints backup in this role — Austin Reiter — who ended up starting five games for them, only to cut him once Deiter returned to the lineup. Reiter spent a week on the Los Angeles Rams practice squad earlier in December but was released again.

But the Saints will be busy managing their own COVID-19 issues regardless of whoever the Dolphins trot out on Monday night. As things currently stand on Saturday evening, New Orleans would have to call up 10 of the 16 players from their practice squad just to fill out a 48-man active roster on game day.

Dolphins elevate two practice squad players as COVID replacements for Week 16

Two players jump to the active roster, and one practice squad player returns from the COVID list.

The Miami Dolphins have brought two practice squad players up to their active roster to fill in holes left by players on the reserve/COVID list.

Miami announced that punt returner/wide receiver Tommylee Lewis and center Cameron Tom will be the two players elevated.

Lewis played 11 snaps in the Week 15 matchup against the New York Jets. He returned one punt for five yards. This move could be that the Dolphins know how important Jaylen Waddle and Jevon Holland are for their respective sides of the ball, so they’d rather use a separate player to return punts.

Tom will be the backup center for the game with Greg Mancz being placed on the reserve/COVID list on Thursday. Tom has only played one snap this season, but he had some experience with the Saints earlier in his career. If Michael Deiter goes down, this could be a long night for Tua Tagovailoa and company.

On the team’s website, they also removed practice squad running back Gerrid Doaks from the reserve/COVID list, as he’s returned to the practice squad.

Dolphins activate WR DeVante Parker and C Michael Deiter from IR

The team waived a center to make room on the 53-man roster.

The Miami Dolphins made multiple moves on Saturday in preparation for their Week 13 matchup with the New York Giants.

The team announced that wide receiver DeVante Parker and center Michael Deiter have been activated from injured reserve. Parker has been out since Week 8 against Buffalo when he had his best game of the season. Deiter hasn’t played since Week 3 when he was dealing with foot and quad injuries.

Miami only had one room on the active roster, so they waived center Cameron Tom to make room. They will likely try to get Tom back on the practice squad if he goes unclaimed. This leaves the Dolphins with Deiter as the starting center and Austin Reiter as the backup.

Both Parker and Deiter have been solid when they’ve been healthy this year. Tua Tagovailoa has another weapon to throw to and better blocking ahead of him, so it would make sense that the offense would see a bit of a boost this week and going forward.

The Dolphins also announced that they have elevated safety Sheldrick Redwine from the practice squad for this game.

Dolphins place Greg Mancz on IR, sign Cameron Tom to active roster

The Dolphins are down to their third center.

After nine weeks, the Miami Dolphins are officially down to their third center as the team announced Wednesday that they were placing Greg Mancz on injured reserve.

Mancz went down in the first half of the game against Houston with an ankle injury and never returned. He will now need to miss at least three weeks with the designation.

Austin Reiter has stepped in for Mancz and has looked serviceable. In his 208 snaps, he’s earned a PFF grade of 58 but a 66.1 in pass blocking. He’s an experienced center who should be able to hold his own in most matchups.

In the same announcement, the Dolphins stated that they would be signing center Cameron Tom to their active roster from the practice squad. In his fifth season, Tom has played in just 12 career games and has started only one.

His last game action came in Week 12 of 2020 when he played just three snaps for the Saints in a win over the Broncos. However, he’s been with the Dolphins since February, so he should be familiar with their system.

Dolphins make three roster moves ahead of their Week 7 game vs. Falcons

The Dolphins might be preparing for key players to miss Sunday’s game.

Ahead of their Week 7 matchup with the Atlanta Falcons, the Miami Dolphins made a few moves on Saturday that might be telling for the game.

Brian Flores’ team promoted wide receiver Isaiah Ford to the active roster. He’s been elevated the last couple of games due to injuries to DeVante Parker, Will Fuller, and Preston Williams. With Parker and Fuller being questionable, and Fuller being on the injured reserve, this may point to one of them missing more time than expected.

To make room for Ford, the Dolphins waived third-string quarterback Reid Sinnett. The former San Diego Torero was originally on Miami’s practice squad but was signed to the active roster when Tua Tagovailoa went down with his injury. Now that the starter is back, the Dolphins will probably try to put Sinnett back on the practice squad if he goes unclaimed.

Miami also elevated center Cameron Tom from the practice squad. This is Tom’s third NFL season but first with the Dolphins, and he has yet to play in a game in 2021. With Michael Deiter on injured reserve and Greg Mancz questionable with a groin injury, it’s likely that Tom will serve as a depth player along with Austin Reiter if Mancz struggles.

Dolphins sign Saints backup Cameron Tom to reserve/future deal

The Miami Dolphins signed New Orleans Saints backup center/guard Cameron Tom to a reserve/future deal, adding him to their 2021 depth chart.

Cameron Tom will get a shot with a new team in 2021 after signing a reserve/future deal with the Miami Dolphins. The former New Orleans Saints backup had a quiet career after joining them as an undrafted rookie in 2017 (out of Southern Mississippi, To The Top!), but this is a good opportunity for him to quickly climb a thin depth chart.

Tom spent the 2017 season on the practice squad, but drew enough attention from rival teams to earn a pay raise to keep him in New Orleans — at one point, he was briefly the NFL’s highest-paid practice squad player before the Saints signed him to their active roster. He studied behind Max Unger until the veteran’s 2019 retirement, when he competed with Erik McCoy for the starting job until a shoulder injury ended his season. When he returned in 2020, fellow backup Will Clapp had surpassed him.

The Saints chose to sign most of their practice squad to reserve/future contracts for 2021, along with CFL standout Wynton McManis. Rookie cornerback Keith Washington Jr. also later signed a reserve/future deal. That left a small group of players from the 2020 practice squad who weren’t brought back, Tom among them; the others included wide receivers Austin Carr and Tommylee Lewis, as well as long snapper John Denney and kicker Blair Walsh, who were last-minute emergency additions to the special teams unit.

Dolphins announce futures contract with center Cameron Tom

Dolphins announce futures contract with center Cameron Tom

The Miami Dolphins announced on Wednesday afternoon that they have added yet another player to the team’s offseason roster, their first addition of the week. Center Cameron Tom is the latest addition to the Miami Dolphins — providing Miami with a young option to challenge for a roster spot in the summer. That is, of course, provided Tom survives the offseason transactions to come and is still on the team’s roster when training camp opens in the fall.

Tom is a former undrafted free agent out of Southern Mississippi (2017) and has previously spent time with the New Orleans Saints. Tom’s NFL career has been, to this point, largely uneventful — he was a practice squad player as a rookie in 2017 before making his NFL debut the following season. Tom has played in 11 games for the Saints and logged one career start between 2017 and 2020.

The expectations for Tom should be tempered; but Miami will need to resolve their center position once again this offseason amid the uncertainty surrounding veteran Ted Karras. Karras signed a one-year deal with the Dolphins last offseason and was an adequate starter in the middle. But is “adequate” good enough for Miami? Or will the team look to build upon their progress with a more high-impact man in the middle? Tom shouldn’t be expected to serve the role as an answer for Karras, but at the very least he serves as another option for depth in the event that Miami needs to worry about second and third string combinations down the road.
