2 Broncos make list of top free agents still available

Touchdown Wire lists Broncos in-house FAs Dalton Risner and Cam Fleming among the NFL’s top free agents still available.

With the 2023 NFL draft now in the review mirror, teams have mostly finalized their offseason rosters, but there will be several notable additions across the league between now and training camp.

The league’s biggest free agents signed weeks ago, but there are still some starting-caliber free agents available, including two Denver Broncos.

Touchdown Wire’s Doug Farrar recently published a list of the best free agents still unsigned, and offensive tackle Cam Fleming, guard Dalton Risner and safety Kareem Jackson made the list. Ex-Denver QB Teddy Bridgewater and ex-Broncos DL Shelby Harris are also still available.

Below is the full list of Denver’s in-house free agents who remain unsigned. (View the list of the top overall free agents still available on Touchdown Wire.)

Update: Kareem Jackson has re-signed with the Broncos.

After NFL draft, Broncos should consider these 12 free agents

With the NFL draft now complete, should the Broncos sign any of these free agents who remain available?

The Denver Broncos improved their roster over the weekend by selecting five players in the 2023 NFL draft and adding a tight end via trade.

While the new arrivals should help, the Broncos did overlook a few positions during the draft, most notably including running back and the defensive line. Denver could also still use more depth at guard and tackle, and a Week 1 starting-caliber center wouldn’t hurt.

After signing their draft class, the Broncos are expected to still have around $7 million worth of salary cap space available. That’s not much — and Denver will want to carry some of it into the season — but it is enough to make another budget signing or two.

With the above positions (and a few others) in mind, here’s a quick list of 12 free agents who are still available and could provide more depth for the Broncos as the team prepares to go into organized team activities in May.

Dolphins hosted free agent OT Cam Fleming on Monday

He was coached by Miami’s new offensive line coach last year.

While most of the NFL world has shifted their focus to the upcoming draft, the Miami Dolphins are still considering veterans to address their needs.

On Monday, Miami hosted offensive tackle Cam Fleming on a visit to the facility.

Fleming, 30, was a fourth-round selection of the New England Patriots back in 2014. After the completion of his rookie deal, he spent two years with the Dallas Cowboys, one year with the New York Giants and the last two with the Denver Broncos.

The former Stanford Cardinal has played in 111 games and stated 61 of them. 63% of his snaps have come at right tackle while 28% have come at left tackle.

During the 2022 season with the Broncos, he was actually coached by new Dolphins offensive line coach Butch Barry, so there’s already a bit of a connection there.

Miami has the starting left tackle job solidified, but the right side is a bit more of a question, despite general manager Chris Grier saying that Austin Jackson is expected to be the starter. Both Jackson and left tackle Terron Armstead dealt with injuries in 2022, so even if they’re both penciled in the lineup, the Dolphins need to consider some quality depth.

At this point, Fleming, if he were brought in, would likely compete with Geron Christian, Kendall Lamm and Kion Smith for backup duties.

Jaguars hosted free agent OT Cam Fleming on visit

The Jaguars reportedly hosted free agent offensive tackle Cam Fleming on a visit.

The Jacksonville Jaguars hosted former Denver Broncos offensive tackle Cam Fleming on a visit, according to a league memo.

Fleming, 30, was a fourth-round pick of the New England Patriots in 2014 and later spent time with the Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants before signing with the Broncos in 2021.

In nine NFL seasons, Fleming has made 61 starts including 15 during the 2022 season.

Fleming split time at both left and right tackle with Denver last season, and was credited with allowing seven sacks on 976 offensive snaps. His 72.6 grade on Pro Football Focus was the highest of his career.

Earlier this offseason, the Jaguars lost starting right tackle Jawaan Taylor to the Kansas City Chiefs in free agency. The team’s 2021 second-round pick, Walker Little, is expected to step into the void left by Taylor’s departure.

Behind Little and starting left tackle Cam Robinson is very little depth. The addition of Fleming and/or an offensive tackle in the 2023 NFL Draft could provide the team with a much-needed swing tackle and a contingency plan if one of the starters gets injured.

12 Broncos free agents remain unsigned

These twelve Broncos free agents remain available. Should the team re-sign any of them?

The Denver Broncos have signed nine unrestricted free agents from other teams and five of their own in-house free agents so far this offseason.

The Broncos have also seen 10 of their free agents sign with other teams this spring. Today, we’re taking a quick look at Denver’s 12 free agents who remain unsigned.

The most notable player on the list is guard Dalton Risner, who has remained available longer than expected. The Broncos have already moved on from Risner by signing guard Ben Powers to a four-year, $52 million contract.

Three other notable names on the list are safety Kareem Jackson, running back Latavius Murray and offensive tackle Cam Fleming. Jackson and Murray might have to wait until after the NFL draft to land deals. Fleming could be a fit as a backup swing tackle option for Denver.

Here’s the full list of Broncos free agents who are still unsigned at the time of this writing on March 22.

Projected contracts for 5 of the Broncos’ in-house free agents

Here are the projected market values for the Broncos’ top five in-house free agents this offseason.

The Denver Broncos are projected to have about $13,698,473 in salary cap space this offseason, but the team could bring that number up to $57,218,495 by restructuring select contracts this spring.

More than $57 million worth of cap space would allow the Broncos to make some splashes during NFL free agency, but fans in Denver shouldn’t forget that the club has several in-house free agents who should be re-signed as well.

If the Broncos re-signed defensive lineman De’Mont Jones, guard Dalton Risner, linebacker Alex Singleton, safety Kareem Jackson and tackle Cam Fleming at their market values, it would cost the team about $38,350,578 in 2023, according to projections from Pro Football Focus and Spotrac.com.

Here’s a quick look at the projected market values for five of Denver’s free agents this offseason.

How will the Broncos replace injured OT Billy Turner?

One candidate to help replace Billy Turner is Tom Compton, who might return this week.

Denver Broncos right tackle Billy Turner is “week-to-week” with a knee injury, coach Nathaniel Hackett announced Friday.

Turner was expected to become the Broncos’ starting right tackle when they signed him this offseason, but his recovery from a lingering knee injury sidelined him for the first five weeks of the season.

When Turner was sidelined earlier this year, the Broncos started Cam Fleming in his place. Turner won the starting job once he was cleared to play, then Fleming was moved over to left tackle when Garett Bolles went down with a season-ending broken leg.

Fleming is currently sidelined with a quad injury so Calvin Anderson started in his place against the Tennessee Titans. When Turner left Sunday’s game with a knee injury, practice squad call-up Quinn Bailey was thrust into right tackle duties, giving the team third-choice options at both tackle spots.

Denver is also down to its third-choice option at center after losing Lloyd Cushenberry (groin) and Graham Glasgow (shoulder) to injuries. Right now, the only regular starters remaining on the offensive line are Dalton Risner and Quinn Meinerz, the team’s two guards.

It remains to be seen how the Broncos will replace Turner at right tackle. If Fleming returns from his injury, he could start at one of the tackle spots with Anderson across from him. If Fleming is going to miss more time, Bailey would be in line to start this week.

Denver also still has Tom Compton, who has been on the reserve/physically unable to perform list all season with a back injury. Compton was designated to return two and a half weeks ago. If he is not elevated to the 53-man roster within three weeks (by Wednesday), he will have to spend the rest of the season on reserve.

It wouldn’t be surprising to see the Broncos activate Compton this week even if he isn’t quite ready to play. The team is running out of options on the offensive line and they can’t afford to miss Compton’s window for a potential return this season.

Once healthy, Compton will be a candidate to start at right tackle.

Broncos injuries: At least 2 players to miss several weeks

Baron Browning, Mike Boone and Cam Fleming will miss some time. Full injury report below.

The Denver Broncos will be without three players for a bit, coach Nathaniel Hackett announced on Monday.

Broncos outside linebacker Baron Browning (hip), running back Mike Boone (ankle) and offensive lineman Cam Fleming (quad) will all be sidelined going into the team’s Week 9 bye after this weekend’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars in London.

NFL Network reported earlier this week that Browning is expected to miss several weeks, and KUSA-TV reported that Boone has a high ankle sprain. Hackett said Monday that Fleming will miss some time, but it’s uncertain if he will be sidelined as long as Browning and Boone.

The Broncos’ complete injury report from Wednesday can be seen below.

Broncos buzz: Before traveling to London, Denver signed running back Marlon Mack to the practice squad and placed Boone on injured reserve. Boone will now have to sit out four weeks.

Additionally, the Broncos promoted long snapper Mitchell Fraboni from the practice squad to the active roster. To fill Fraboni’s former spot on the practice squad, Denver offensive tackle Christian DiLauro.

The Broncos will practice again on Thursday and Friday before releasing a final injury report with game statuses for Sunday.

Broncos expected to start Cam Fleming again at right tackle in Week 2

The Broncos are expected to start Cam Fleming again at right tackle this week.

After earning a start against the Seattle Seahawks last week, Denver Broncos offensive lineman Cam Fleming is expected to start at right tackle again in Week 2.

“When he got here, we kind of threw him into the mix,” coach Nathaniel Hackett said of Fleming on Wednesday. “He got here later than the other guys, and I thought he was really consistent. I thought he did a really good job at right tackle. As a whole, I think it went pretty well.

“We ran the ball well, we protected pretty well. Obviously, the noise for a first game and everybody together contributed to some of those false starts and some of the delay games and things like that with those guys. But besides that, all in all as a group, I thought they did a pretty good job.”

Broncos offensive lineman Billy Turner is still working his way back from injury, so Fleming will likely start against the Houston Texans on Sunday. If Turner is healthy enough to dress for the game, he will likely serve as a swing backup at both tackle and guard.

5 notes from Day 1 of Broncos training camp

“We feel really good about this team,” Broncos GM George Paton said.

The Denver Broncos took to the practice field for Day 1 of training camp on Wednesday. Following the arrival of a new coaching staff and a new star quarterback in Russell Wilson, expectations are high in Denver.

“We know expectations are higher than they’ve ever been here,” general manager George Paton said during his pre-camp press conference on Tuesday. “We’re not blind to that. We embrace expectations, but we have a long way to go. We haven’t won here in five, six years.

“We won seven games last year. We’re 0-0 now. The work starts now, [and there’s] a lot of work to be done. I know we’re going to embrace the process, and I look forward to the journey with Coach [Nathaniel] Hackett, with this team, and everyone involved.”

Here are five quick notes on the Broncos following the first day of practice at the team’s UCHealth Training Center in Englewood.
