Canelo Alvarez vs. Billy Joe Saunders title-unification bout set for May

Canelo Alvarez and Billy Joe Saunders have agreed to fight for three of the four major 168-pound titles in May.

Canelo Alvarez has his title-unification fight. So does Billy Joe Saunders.

Alvarez and Saunders will meet for three of the four major super middleweight belts on either May 1 or 8 on DAZN, The Athletic is reporting. The site evidently hasn’t been finalized.

The fight is contingent on Alvarez beating Avni Yildirim on Feb. 27 in Miami.

Alvarez (54-1-2, 36 KOs) and Saunders (30-0, 14 KOs) had reached a deal to fight in May of last year but the coronavirus shut down the sport.

The Mexican star, who holds two belts, has stated his intention to unify all the 168-pound titles. That means it’s possible he will fight titleholder Caleb Plant in September if he beats Yildirim and Saunders, and Plant beats Caleb Truax this Saturday.

Alvarez won his titles by easily outpointing Callum Smith on Dec. 19, his most-recent fight.

Saunders last fought on Dec. 4 in London, when the Englishman defeated countryman Martin Murray by a unanimous decision in his second title defense.

Callum Smith: Canelo Alvarez is unbeatable

Callum Smith said Canelo Alvarez is unbeatable at the moment.

Callum Smith believes that Canelo Alvarez is currently unbeatable.

Alvarez defeated Smith by a unanimous decision in December, giving the Mexican two super middleweight titles. The loss brought Smith’s unbeaten record to an end in a convincing win for his rival.

Smith told Sky Sports that while he had been in the gym for most of the year during the coronavirus pandemic, there are things he would have changed if he had the chance.

“Ideally I would have wanted full notice but I was in the gym most of the year. If I wasn’t doing anything I would have turned the fight down. I was in decent enough shape, I did the twelve rounds OK,” he said.

“Tactically I would have liked longer to adjust to Canelo but I could have had twelve rounds and there’s no certainty that the result would have been different.

“He is very clever in terms of the jab. He walks you down. With anybody else, you would jab. But he wants you to jab because he’s a counter-puncher.

“So you don’t throw as many jabs and while you are waiting, he closes the space down without throwing anything. Then he jabs and hits you. You think: ‘How did that land?’ He keeps you guessing all the time. You are hesitant.”

Smith went on: “His best asset was his presence and his defense. He was so hard to hit clean. When I was throwing he was riding them, making me miss. You aren’t landing so you stop fully committing to shots. He takes away what you are good at.

“I don’t think anyone beats him. He may only lose if he keeps going up in weight but he’s put a stop to that. His defense is just too good. He can obviously punch but his power wasn’t ridiculous.

“I remember Groves hit me and I thought: ‘I don’t want to take one of those on the chin.'”

Alvarez is scheduled to defend his titles against Avni Yildirim on Feb. 27.

Canelo Alvarez vs. Avni Yildirim set for Feb. 27: reports

Canelo Alvarez will defend his super middleweight titles against mandatory challenger Avni Yildirim on Feb. 27, according to reports.

Canelo Alvarez vs. Avni Yildirim reportedly is on.

Alvarez has agreed to defend his super middleweight titles against his mandatory challenger on Feb. 27, according to multiple reports. The fight will be streamed on DAZN.

The site has not been announced. The Athletic is reporting that it probably will be Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, the home of the Miami Dolphins. The NFL team allowed an average of more than 12,000 fans to attend games, which presumably was attractive to Alvarez and Co.

Alvarez fought Callum Smith in front of an estimated 11,400 at the Alamodome in San Antonio last month. However, Texas reportedly has tightened crowd restrictions because of a spike in COVID-19 cases in that state.

The Mexican star has said he intends to unify 168-pound titles this year, meaning he would fight either of his two fellow beltholders – Billy Joe Saunders or Caleb Plant – in September, assuming he beats Yildirim.

Alvarez (54-1-2, 36 KOs) split with longtime promoter Golden Boy Promotions in November, making him his own promoter. He decided to continue working with Golden Boy affiliate DAZN, at least through the fight on Feb. 27.

Yildirim (21-2, 12 KOs) will have been out of the ring for more than two years when he faces Alvarez. He last fought in February 2019, when he lost a technical decision against Anthony Dirrell.

Canelo Alvarez near deal to fight Avni Yildirim on Feb. 27

Canelo Alvarez is near a deal with Matchroom Boxing to fight Avni Yildirim on Feb. 27 and another opponent on May 8.

Canelo Alvarez and Matchroom Boxing are near a deal to fight Avni Yildirim on Feb. 27 and another opponent on May 8, according to The Athletic.

The outlet is reporting that the sides have agreed on major points but final details are being worked out.

Alvarez, who won two super middleweight titles when he outpointed Callum Smith on Dec. 19, would defend against the mandatory challenger Yildirim at a venue in the United States on DAZN.

The Turk agreed to step aside so Alvarez (54-1-2, 36 KOs) could fight Smith for the titles.

Yildirim (21-2, 12 KOs) is a solid fighter but would be a tremendous underdog against Alvarez. He won five fights since he was stopped in three rounds by Chris Eubank Jr. in 2017 but lost a technical decision to Anthony Dirrell this past February.

The opponent for Cinco de Mayo weekend evidently hasn’t been selected. Alvarez has said he wants to unify the 168-pound titles so fellow beltholders Billy Joe Saunders and Caleb Plant would be his targets.

Alvarez dominated Smith to win 119-109, 119-109 and 117-111 on the cards, claiming Smith’s WBA belt and winning the vacant WBC title.

The Mexican star recently left Golden Boy Promotions to become his own promoter. He worked with Matchroom’s Eddie Hearn for the Smith fight.
