The newest Call of Duty outsold its predecessor’s lifetime sales in just two weeks and is trailing only behind Elden Ring and FIFA
In the two weeks since Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 launched, the FPS game has come close to surpassing Call of Duty Vanguard’s lifetime sales in Europe, GamesIndustry.biz reports. It now ranks as the third best-selling game of the year, behind Elden Ring and FIFA 23.
As to how well Activision’s latest performed in the United States, we’ll have to wait until the NPD Group publishes its monthly sales report. If Vanguard is any indication, though, Modern Warfare 2 likely saw similar levels of success. Barely a month after Vanguard launched in November 2021, it was at the top of the sales charts, despite selling less spectacularly than Activision hoped for.
Also defying expectations is the PlayStation 5, which, even after price increases and continued shortages, surpassed the Nintendo Switch as the month’s best-selling hardware for the first time since September 2021.
Other notables include Mario+Rabbids: Sparks of Hope, which debuted at number five across all European markets, Bayonetta 3 at number 14, and A Plague Tale: Requiem at number 12. In the middle of the new launches are evergreen titles, such as Grand Theft Auto 5, which still managed to be Europe’s third best-selling game nearly 10 years after it first released, and Red Dead Redemption 2, which found itself just outside the top five, as the sixth best-selling game of the month.
As for what’s next, November isn’t lacking its own heavy hitters. God of War Ragnarok and Sonic Frontiers launched on Nov. 8, 2022, and Nov. 9, 2022, respectively, and Pokemon Scarlet and Violet will release on Nov. 18, 2022.
