Calgary Flames at Ottawa Senators odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Thursday’s Calgary Flames at Ottawa Senators NHL odds and lines, with hockey picks, tips and predictions.

The Calgary Flames (9-9-2) continue their Eastern Canada road trip with the first game of three straight against the Ottawa Senators (6-14-1) at Canadian Tire Centre. Thursday’s puck drop will be at 7 p.m. ET. Below, we analyze the Flames-Senators odds and lines, with NHL picks and predictions.

The two sides will play a total of five head-to-head games between Thursday and Sunday, March 7. They haven’t met yet this season in the all-Canadian North Division. They split their two-game series 1-1 last season with both teams winning on home ice.

Calgary’s coming off a 2-1 overtime loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs Wednesday night. Ottawa was off following a surprising two-game sweep of the Montreal Canadiens Sunday and Tuesday; they won 5-4 via a shootout Tuesday.

  • Money line: Flames -175 (bet $175 to win $100) | Senators +150 (bet $100 to win $150)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Flames -1.5 (+145) | Senators +1.5 (-175)
  • Over/Under: 6.5 (O: +100 | U: -120)

Flames at Senators: Projected starting goalies

Jacob Markstrom (8-6-1, .909 SV%, 2.87 GAA) at Matt Murray (4-9-1, .883 SV%, 3.66 GAA)

Markstrom sat out Wednesday’s game due to an upper-body injury, but an extra day of rest should have him back in the crease. He lost back-to-back games to the Vancouver Canucks and Edmonton Oilers Wednesday and Saturday with a total of 10 goals allowed on 44 shots; he was pulled early both times.

Murray was in net for both wins over the Canadiens and stopped 62 of 68 shots faced. Backup Marcus Hogberg remains sidelined by a lower-body injury, so Murray should get an extended run in net.

Flames at Senators: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Senators 4, Flames 3

Money line (ML)

Back the SENATORS (+150) as home underdogs once again. Though they’re still buried in last place in the North Division, the Sens have gone 4-2 over their last six games. The Flames are 2-3-1 over the same stretch.

The Flames received a strong effort from backup G David Rittich Wednesday, but Markstrom has been bad of late and may still be a little banged up. The Sens get the edge in the goalie battle.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

The SENATORS +1.5 (-175) can also be backed with the goal of insurance on the puck line. They’ve lost by 2 or more goals just three times in their last 10 games, and the Flames have won by 2 or more three times in their last 10 outings.

Calgary is 11th in the NHL with a 5-on-5 Corsi For percentage of 50.80 while Ottawa is right behind at 50.50%.

Over/Under (O/U)

Take the OVER 6.5 (+100) with Markstrom struggling between the pipes and the Senators still allowing a league-high 4.00 goals per game.

Calgary’s 21.05% power-play success rate is likely to strike against Ottawa’s 24th-ranked penalty kill of 75.36%.

Calgary Flames at Toronto Maple Leafs odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Wednesday’s Calgary Flames at Toronto Maple Leafs odds, with NHL betting picks and prediction.

The Calgary Flames (9-9-1) wrap up a two-game set on the road against the Toronto Maple Leafs (14-4-2) Wednesday for a 7 p.m. ET puck drop at Scotiabank Arena. Below we analyze the Flames-Maple Leafs odds and lines, with NHL picks and predictions.

Flames at Maple Leafs: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 3:30 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Flames +130 (bet $100 to win $130) | Maple Leafs -155 (bet $155 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Flames +1.5 (-200) | Maple Leafs -1.5 (+165)
  • Over/Under: 6.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Flames at Maple Leafs: Projected starting goalies

Jacob Markstrom (8-6-1, 2.87 GAA, .909 SV%, 2 SO) at Michael Hutchinson (1-1-0, 3.05 GAA, .914 SV%)

Markstrom has gotten tuned up across the past two outings, coughing up five goals in each game. One of them was against his former team, the Vancouver Canucks, when he was pulled in the third period, and last time was a 7-1 loss at the Edmonton Oilers Saturday when he stopped just 10 of 15 shots before giving way to G David Rittich. The latter blanked the Maple Leafs 3-0 Monday. Rittich is 1-3-0 this season, but he has a 2.36 GAA and .909 SV% in his six appearances, seeing very little offensive support to lead to his poor record.

Hutchinson is projected to make the start, as G Frederik Andersen is nursing an undisclosed lower-body injury. Hutch was thrust into a starting role in Monday’s 3-0 loss, but he wasn’t half bad. He turned aside 30 of the 33 shots he faced, allowing two of the goals on special teams.

Flames at Maple Leafs: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Flames 4, Maple Leafs 3

Money line (ML)

The FLAMES (+130) catch a break in Toronto by not having to face Andersen, who leads the NHL with 11 victories with a respectable 2.69 GAA. While Hutchinson wasn’t bad in the Great Dane’s stead, Calgary is much more attractive on the road with Andersen on the shelf.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

The Flames +1.5 (-200) will cost you two times your potential return if you’re not feeling them straight up for a second straight game in Toronto. There is just no value here. Take the Flames on the road on the money line, or avoid this wager altogether. PASS.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 6.5 (-110) is the lean here, although if you’re a regular reader of my columns, you’ll know I am not a fan of a 6.5 total, at least for Over wagers. Not many people are. In this case, Markstrom has been very giving lately, and Hutchinson is Hutchinson. He played much better than usual last time out in an emergency role. His rebound control isn’t nearly as good as Andersen, and we should see plenty of scoring chances in this one.

Edmonton Oilers at Calgary Flames odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Friday’s Edmonton Oilers at Calgary Flames NHL odds and lines, with hockey picks, tips and predictions.

The Edmonton Oilers (10-8-0) visit the Calgary Flames (8-7-1) Friday for a 9 p.m. ET puck drop. Below we analyze the Oilers-Flames NHL odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Oilers at Flames: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 5:06 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Oilers +105 (bet $100 to win $105) | Flames -125 (bet $125 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Oilers +1.5 (-250) | Flames -1.5 (+200)
  • Over/Under: 6.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Oilers at Flames: Projected starting goalies

Mikko Koskinen (6-8-0, 3.43 GAA, .894 SV%) at Jacob Markstrom (8-5-1, 2.61 GAA, .918 SV%, 2 SO)

The Oilers got a nice outing from G Mike Smith last time out, but Koskinen remains the top dog in Edmonton for now. Koskinen has allowed two or fewer goals in three of his four appearances in February, and he has a pair of wins in his three starts in the month. After a rough start to the season, Koskinen finally looks to be turning things around. However, he did allow six goals on 28 shots in a 6-4 loss at Calgary in his most recent showing against the Flames.

Markstrom coughed up five goals on 29 shots in his most recent showing, and he was pulled in the third period in favor of G David Rittich. Markstrom was making his sixth appearance of the season against the Canucks, his old team, and he was due for a stinker. Look for the Flames to turn back to Markstrom for the Battle of Alberta. He allowed four goals on 32 shots in a 6-4 win Feb. 6 at home against the Oilers in his only appearance in the rivalry to date.

Oilers at Flames: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Flames 5, Oilers 3

Money line (ML)

The FLAMES (-125) are the play on their home ice in the front end of this home-and-home with the Oilers. The favorite has cashed in nine of the past 12 meetings in this series, and Calgary has won five of its past seven at home against Edmonton. In fact, the Oilers are just 1-4 in the past five meetings overall in this series, as their rivals have had their number lately.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

The FLAMES -1.5 (+200) are a tempting play on home ice, and worth a small-unit play despite the fact these games tend to be high-scoring and usually very close. It’s also a risky play with Calgary coming off a 5-1 loss last time out on home ice against Vancouver. In addition, just one of the Flames’ past three wins are by more than one goal, although they did win 6-4 in the first meeting with the Oilers. However, a low-risk, small bet is warranted, as a chance to double up is just too tough to pass up.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 6.5 (-110) is risky business, especially since the Flames are 3-1-1 to the Under in the past five outings, and 5-2-1 in the previous eight. However, one of those Over results was against the Oilers Feb. 6. The Under is also 4-1 for Calgary in the previous five. I don’t love 6.5 total lines, especially when playing the Over, but the Over is 4-0-1 in the past five meetings and 18-7-1 in the past 26 in Calgary.

Vancouver Canucks at Calgary Flames odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Wednesday’s Vancouver Canucks at Calgary Flames NHL odds and lines, with hockey picks, tips and predictions.

The Vancouver Canucks (7-11-1) and Calgary Flames (8-6-1) play the final game of a four-game head-to-head run Wednesday at Scotiabank Saddledome. Puck drop will be at 10 p.m. ET. Below, we analyze the Canucks-Flames NHL odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

The Flames have won two of the first three games in this set with Monday’s game being decided 4-3 in overtime. The two teams played a two-game set Jan. 16 and 18 in Calgary and the Flames won each of those by a combined 8-2 count.

Each of the first three games in this mini-series was played in Vancouver.

Canucks at Flames: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 10:40 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Canucks +130 (bet $100 to win $130) | Flames -155 (bet $155 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Canucks +1.5 (-200) | Flames -1.5 (+170)
  • Over/Under: 6 (O: -120 | U: +100)

Canucks at Flames: Projected starting goalies

Thatcher Demko (4-6-1, .895 SV%, 3.52 GAA) vs. Jacob Markstrom (8-4-1, .924 SV%, 2.38 GAA)

Demko played each of the first three games of this set and stopped 64 of 72 shots on goal. He took a loss against the Flames Jan. 18 by allowing 4 goals on 31 shots.

Markstrom has picked up right where he left off while backstopping the Canucks last season. He has two shutouts through 13 games and made 106 saves on 112 shots over the first three games of this series. He has been slightly worse at the Saddledome this season with a .912 SV% compared to a .932 mark on the road.

Canucks at Flames: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Canucks 3, Flames 1

Money line (ML)

The Flames lead the 2021 season series 4-1-0 over the Canucks. They’ve outscored their western Canadian rivals 16-9 through the five games; however, the Canucks have registered 58.37% of the 5-on-5 shot attempts and 55.20% of the scoring chances through the first three games of this four-game series.

Markstrom is clearly the better goaltender in this clash and is making the Canucks pay for allowing him to leave via free agency, but he hasn’t been quite his usual self in his new home arena.

Back the CANUCKS (+130) to get some revenge to close this set.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

The CANUCKS +1.5 (-200) can also be backed with one goal of insurance in the event of a loss.

Three of Calgary’s four wins in this head-to-head season series were decided by multi-goal margins in regulation, but the Canucks are 1-0-1 in the last two games and rushed out to a 2-0 first-period lead last time out.

Over/Under (O/U)

Bet the UNDER 6 (+100) with growing familiarity between one another and tired legs on both sides as they meet for the fourth time in seven days.

Three of the five meetings thus far this season played to the Under.

Calgary Flames at Vancouver Canucks odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Thursday’s Calgary Flames at Vancouver Canucks NHL odds and lines, with hockey picks, tips and predictions.

The Calgary Flames (6-5-1) visit the Vancouver Canucks (6-10-0) in a Thursday night game at Rogers Arena with the puck dropping shortly after 10 p.m. ET. Below, we analyze the Flames-Canucks NHL odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Flames at Canucks: Odds, spread and lines

  • Against the spread/ATS: Flames -1.5 (+185) | Canucks +1.5 (-225)
  • Over/Under: 6 (O: -115 | U: -105)

Flames at Canucks: Projected starting goalies

Jacob Markstrom (6-3-1, .916 SV%, 2.50 GAA) vs. Braden Holtby (3-5-0, .885 SV%, 3.75 GAA)

Markstrom is coming off a solid Tuesday effort against the Winnipeg Jets with 25 saves on 27 shots. Two of the veteran netminder’s better starts this season came against these Canucks: he stopped 57 of 59 shots in home starts Jan. 16 and 18 against his former club.

Holtby has lost three straight starts, posting an .844 SV% in the process. The 11-year veteran is the last line of defense behind a Vancouver team allowing a league-high 34.7 shots per game. Holtby has carded a mere .889 SV% in even-strength play. He’s behind an average penalty-killing group, and the Canucks’ average penalty time of 12:18 minutes per game is the highest in the league.

Flames at Canucks: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Flames 4, Canucks 2

Money line (ML)

The Canucks have yielded 5.2 goals per game in losing five in a row. Expected-goals figures back up Vancouver’s shaky win-loss record.

Calgary’s puck-possession numbers are impressive with a 53.5% Corsi For over its last 10 games, and the visitors figure to have the edge between the pipes.

TAKE THE FLAMES (-145).

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

The Calgary-by-2 lean isn’t particularly strong, but the price here gives this play leverage. A Flames power play trending the right way (25% last seven games) against a penalty-prone Vancouver squad helps push the puck-line play into profit territory. BACK THE FLAMES -1.5 (+185).

Over/Under (O/U)

PASS. Keep an eye on the price. The Over would be a slight lean with an even-money tag (-110).

The Edmonton Oilers (6-6-0) travel to meet the Calgary Flames (4-5-1)  Saturday at Scotiabank Saddledome for a 10 p.m. ET puck drop Saturday. Below, we analyze the Oilers-Flames NHL odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

  • Against the spread/ATS: Oilers +1.5 (-240) | Flames -1.5 (+195)
  • Over/Under: 6.5 (O: -115 | U: -105)

Oilers at Flames: Projected starting goalies

Mikko Koskinen (5-6-0, .897 SV%, 3.31 GAA) vs. Jacob Markstrom (4-3-1, .920 SV%, 2.37 GAA, 2 SO)

Koskinen has been up and down, but lately it’s been all up. He enters the game with consecutive wins for the first time this season, including 23 saves on 25 shots in a 4-2 win over the Ottawa Senators last time out. This is the first of 10 meetings between these provincial rivals this season. Koskinen was 0-2-0 with a 4.16 GAA and .877 SV% in two starts and a relief appearances vs. CGY last season.

Markstrom has already posted two shutouts, although he has allowed three or more goals in four of his past five outings. The Flames haven’t really provided him with adequate offensive support lately, scoring just 2.4 goals per game over his five starts. Markstrom went 2-2-0 with a .908 SV% and 2.54 GAA in three starts vs. EDM as a member of the Vancouver Canucks last season.

Oilers at Flames: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Flames 5, Oilers 3

Money line (ML)

The FLAMES (-130) have owned this series in recent seasons, winning seven of the past 10 meetings. The favorite is also 8-3 across the past 11.

Given Markstrom’s solid showing last season against the Oilers, and Koskinen’s struggles against the Flames last season, it’s a good bet Calgary continues to burn its rival.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

The FLAMES -1.5 (+195) are worth a small-unit play, as you can nearly double up your initial stake, and that’s always attractive. Three of Calgary’s four wins have come by two or more goals.

In fact, their winning margin is 2.3 goals per game, with three wins in regulation by a total of eight goals with one shootout victory.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 6.5 (-115) is 3-0-1 in the past four meetings in this series, and 9-3-1 in the past 13 meetings in Calgary. Couple that with the fact the Over is an impressive 5-1 across the past six for the Oilers, and the Over is a great play in this Battle of Alberta.

Calgary Flames at Winnipeg Jets odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Thursday’s Calgary Flames at Winnipeg Jets NHL betting odds and lines, with hockey picks, tips and predictions.

The Winnipeg Jets host the rival Calgary Flames at Bell MTS Place for an 8 p.m. ET puck drop Thursday. It’s the season-opener for both teams after the Flames beat the Jets 3-1 in their five-game qualification round series in the 2019-20 postseason. Below, we analyze the Flames-Jets NHL betting odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Flames at Jets: Betting odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 10:42 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Flames -125 (bet $125 to win $100) | Jets +105 (bet $100 to win $105)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Flames -1.5 (+220) | Jets +1.5 (-280)
  • Over/Under: 6 (O: +100 | U: -120)

Flames at Jets: Projected starting goalies

Jacob Markstrom (23-16-4, .918 SV%, 2.75 GAA) vs. Connor Hellebuyck (31-21-5, .922 SV%, 2.57 GAA)

Markstrom, 30, had a career-best season with the Vancouver Canucks in 2019-20. He finished fourth in Vezina Trophy voting and landed a 6-year, $36-million contract in free agency. He was 0-2 against Calgary with Vancouver last regular season, allowing 7 goals on 60 shots.

Hellebuyck is the reigning Vezina Trophy winner after leading the league in games played (58), saves (1,656) and shutouts (6). He stopped 29 of 30 shots in his lone regular-season start against the Flames.

Flames at Jets: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Jets 3, Markstrom 2

Money line (ML)

Take the value of the home underdog JETS (+105) in a battle of top goaltenders. Both teams have kept their cores intact from last season, and while the Flames have the better defense group, Hellebuyck’s familiarity with his bunch will prove beneficial as Markstrom gets familiarized with his new team.

Winnipeg won’t have its usual home-ice advantage but this will be a low-scoring, coin-flip game. Always take the value in that scenario.

Against the spread (ATS)

PASS on the spread with no value on either side of what projects as a one-goal game. The Jets topped the Flames 2-1 in overtime in the 2019-20 regular season and their lone playoff win was decided 3-2. The Flames won playoff games by scores of 4-1, 6-2 and 4-0 at Rogers Place in Edmonton, but better defensive play should be expected from Winnipeg this season.

A prop bet of Jets to win by 1 pays out at +625 as an alternative play.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 6 (-120) is the strongest play in this one but the alternate line of UNDER 5.5 (+105) offers the better value while still needing the same result of 5 or fewer total goals scored for a bet to cash.

All but one of the five meetings between the two last season saw 5 or fewer goals scored and the goaltending situation has markedly improved for Calgary. Don’t expect either team to score more than three goals.
