Notre Dame defensive back finds new home out east

Best of luck to him with his next step

Notre Dame has been busy in the transfer portal both in additions and in subtractions of late.  Rising sophomore Caleb Offord was one of the latest Fighting Irish players to enter the portal and the cornerback has announced he’ll be moving on to Buffalo to play collegiately.

Offord was rated as a three-star recruit out of high school and was Notre Dame’s first Mississippi-based football player to receive a scholarship since Jarious Jackson.

Offord didn’t see meaningful time for Notre Dame in 2021 after he chose the Irish over the likes of Purdue, Vanderbilt, Duke, Arkansas, and others.

All the best to Offord at Buffalo.

An ongoing list of those departing and those entering…

The transfer portal is sweeping college football and changing the landscape of the entire sport like few things have before.  Although Notre Dame hasn’t been hit with a major loss by any means this season, there is still plenty of an impact that can be felt as nine different players have entered the portal since the start of the football season.

We assume it’s only a matter of time before the Irish land a few commitments in it but as of now that is not yet the case.

Here are those nine and the latest on their future destinations:

Notre Dame loses cornerback to transfer portal

Another Domer hits the transfer portal

Notre Dame cornerback Caleb Offord is entering the transfer portal as it would seem his time with the Fighting Irish has come to an end.  Offord was a member of the 2020 recruiting class and a rarity for Notre Dame as he was the program’s first player since Jarious Jackson to earn a football scholarship and come from Mississippi.

Offord was seemingly blocked on the depth chart and didn’t figure to push for much of an expanded role in 2022.

Offord was graded as a three star recruit by 247Sports during his recruitment and chose Notre Dame over the likes of Arkansas, Duke, Houston, Oklahoma, and others.

All the best of Offord at his next destination.

Reading into Lorenzo Styles’ number for Notre Dame

We know that Lorenzo Styles Jr. will wear the number 21, but what we don’t know is where he will line up wearing the number.

I have been on the record saying that athlete Lorenzo Styles’ Jr. has the potential to be a game-changing player on either side of the ball.

The six-foot-one-inch and 185-pound early enrolling freshman posted this picture to Twitter yesterday and once again, got my mind thinking what position we will first see Styles Jr. playing for Notre Dame.

I know this is a huge stretch, but not many wide receivers wear that number. Yes, collegiate rosters have more than 100 players, so seeing multiple numbers on one team isn’t out of the ordinary.

Could Styles Jr. end up playing defensive back? He certainly has the ability to do so, it’s not out of the question.

I’ve looked at how the Irish stop the agonizing losing streak in marquee bowl games, upgrading the defensive backfield was included in that. What Styles Jr. would bring to the position would be a step in the right direction.

What also would be helping the Irish get over that hump? Big time skill position players. Styles Jr. fits into both categories.

Could this just be nothing also, sure it can. Why? Right now another defensive back, Caleb Offord, also wears the same number, so the number assigned to Styles Jr. might not mean anything. But it could. Either way, we’re excited to see where the talented Ohioan’s career takes him.

Caleb Offord was one of four defensive backs to sign their National Letter of Intent to Notre Dame on Wednesday, adding depth to a unit that figures to be incredibly strong heading into the 2020 season.

The Southaven, Mississippi native originally committed to Notre Dame on the Fourth of July this past summer and checks in as the 37th rated cornerback nationally and 13th best prospect in Mississippi this year according to 247Sports.

Offord intercepted seven passes between his junior and senior high school football seasons and recorded 66 tackles in that time.

Offord becomes Notre Dame’s first commitment from Mississippi during Brian Kelly’s ten years as head coach.
