Patriots announce two practice squad moves on Tuesday

Patriots make two practice squad moves

With the players off for the day, the New England Patriots front office was hard at work making moves ahead of Sunday’s season opener against the Cincinnati Bengals.

On Tuesday, the Patriots announced they signed offensive tackle Caleb Jones to the practice squad. In a corresponding move, the team also announced the release of defensive end Brevin Allen.

Jones signed with the Green Bay Packers as an undrafted rookie in 2022. He was one of many roster cuts after failing to make the initial 53-man roster. The former Indiana University standout is a mammoth human being standing at 6-foot-9 and 370 pounds.

The struggles along the offensive front in New England have the team desperately looking to improve their roster depth. Vederian Lowe is expected to be the starting left tackle, but he was banged up at the end of training camp.

The Patriots have also added a slew of main roster signings, along with spending a third-round draft pick on rookie Caedan Wallace.

It’s a wide open competition along the offense line for New England, which only means opportunity for a player like Jones.

Packers releasing offensive tackle Caleb Jones during final cuts

The Packers are parting ways with offensive tackle Caleb Jones at final cuts.

The Green Bay Packers are parting ways with offensive tackle Caleb Jones. He will be released during final cuts on Tuesday, and Bill Huber of SI.com reports Jones will not be offered a spot to return on the practice squad.

Jones, who is listed at 6-9 and 370 pounds, signed with the Packers as an undrafted free agent in 2022. He was on the team’s 53-man roster during each of the last two seasons but ended up appearing in just one game.

His attempt to become a swing tackle candidate for the 2024 season ends on Tuesday.

This summer, Jones started training camp on the non-football injury list and missed six days. He ended up operating as a third-string offensive tackle — behind Kadeem Telfort and rookie Travis Glover — for much of training camp.

During the 2024 preseason, Jones played 81 snaps — 74 at left tackle and seven at right tackle — over three games. He allowed one pressure.

Last season, Jones was a healthy scratch for 15 regular season games and both playoff games.

The Packers are attempting to find a capable swing tackle behind Rasheed Walker and Zach Tom. Telfort, Glover and veteran Andre Dillard were among the competitors.

Luke Tenuta, Caleb Jones on similar path as Yosh Nijman, can Packers get similar results?

Luke Tenuta and Caleb Jones are on similar developmental paths as Yosh Nijman was on. Now, can the Packers get similar contributions?

Offensive tackles Caleb Jones and Luke Tenuta find themselves on a similar developmental path as Yosh Nijman. Now the Packers are hoping that it leads to similar results.

Tenuta and Jones are about to enter their third seasons with the Packers. Jones was signed as undrafted rookie following the 2022 draft and Tenuta, who was a sixth-round pick by the Bills that same year, was claimed off waivers by the Packers early on in the 2022 season.

Both players were raw prospects coming out of their respective schools, but both possessed elite size and movement skills that the Packers were willing to bet on and take time to develop.

Tenuta and Jones were both on the Packers’ 53-man roster as rookies in what was essentially a red-shirt year for each of them. This past year, Jones filled a similar role at the bottom of the depth chart, while Tenuta’s season never got going after he suffered an ankle injury during the preseason that kept him on IR for much of the year.

However, before being placed on IR, the Packers put him on the initial 53-man roster, which gave Tenuta the opportunity to return to practice later in the year, which he eventually did, although he was never activated. This small detail is just another example of how highly the Packers think of him, as well Jones, who took up a roster spot the entire season.

“He’s big, first of all,” said Brian Gutekunst of Tenuta last summer. “He’s really smart. He’s tough. We think he’s got pretty good upside. You guys know, I’ve talked about this with you before, but especially once you get into the season it’s hard to find big guys who can play, and we think he’s a big guy who can play, so we would like to continue to develop him.”

Tenuta has played seven career snaps, which came in mop-up duty of Week 17 during the 2022 season, while Jones is yet to take the field in a regular season game.

What was just described isn’t all that different from Nijman’s path with the Packers. Nijman, who during the pre-draft process measured in at 6-7, 324 pounds and posted an elite Relative Athletic Score of 9.87, went undrafted in 2019 out of Virginia Tech. He joined the Packers that spring as an undrafted rookie.

Nijman spent 2019 on the Packers’ practice squad and made the roster in 2020, but played only 15 snaps that season. However, it was in Year 3 for him, that he saw his first extensive playing time as the Packers navigated injuries at the tackle position in 2021.

From 2021 to 2023, Nijman would play 1,605 snaps at both right and left tackle, either starting 22 games or being a reliable swing tackle off the bench—a valuable role on any team.

Looking ahead to the 2024 season, both Tenuta and Jones are entering their third NFL seasons, and ideally, like Nijman, the Packers will need them to step into larger roles in some sort of capacity given the lack of experienced tackle depth on the roster.

Rasheed Walker will be the likely favorite to start at left tackle to begin the season, but as Matt LaFleur discussed recently at the NFL Owners’ Meetings, Walker still has “a lot of room for improvement.”

My guess is that Walker will have to earn that starting spot during training camp and the preseason, and I’m sure the hope is that Jones and/or Tenuta can provide some competition for Walker, while also showing that either can be counted on as depth to come off the bench if needed.

While that is the hope, assuming that jump from either Tenuta or Jones will take place comes with some risk as well. Brian Gutekunst will likely be proactive and spend one of the team’s five top 100 selections on an offensive tackle, which is a loaded position group in this year’s draft class.

Although Nijman navigated some ups and downs in 2023, the Packers invested time into him and were ultimately rewarded for it, especially when you consider that he was undrafted. They will now be looking for similar results for either Tenuta or Jones, and preferably from both.

Packers place OT Caleb Jones on non-football illness list

The Packers placed OT Caleb Jones on the non-football illness list. He missed Wednesday’s practice.

The Green Bay Packers placed offensive tackle Caleb Jones on the non-football illness list on Wednesday, according to the league’s transaction report.

Jones, a second-year offensive tackle, missed Wednesday’s opening training camp practice with an illness.

A player still counts on the 90-man roster while on the NFI list but can come off the list at any time.

Jones started last season on the Packers’ practice squad but was signed to the 53-man roster in September. He did not appear in a game. This summer, Jones will compete to be a backup offensive tackle behind David Bakhtiari, Zach Tom and Yosh Nijman.

Linebacker Tariq Carpenter and safety Tarvarius Moore are also dealing with illnesses and missed practice Wednesday.

The Packers activated tight end Camren McDonald from the non-football injury list. The rookie practiced on Wednesday.

Packers activate rookie OT Caleb Jones from non-football illness list

The Packers activated rookie OT Caleb Jones from the non-football illness list on Wednesday.

The Green Bay Packers activated rookie offensive tackle Caleb Jones from the non-football illness list to the 53-man roster on Wednesday.

Jones was originally placed on the list on Oct. 1. According to Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Jones was dealing with mononucleosis.

The Packers opened his 21-day window to practice with the team three weeks ago.

Jones takes the roster spot of rookie offensive lineman Sean Rhyan, who was suspended for the final six games of the regular season.

Jones, who stands 6-9, spent the first two weeks of the regular season on the practice squad before being signed to the 53-man roster. He did not appear in a game before going on the non-football illness list.

His impressive work over the summer helped pave the way to a roster spot.

Over three preseason games in August, Jones played 84 snaps, all at left tackle. He allowed one pressure over 45 pass-blocking snaps. At Indiana, Jones started 30 games, including 24 at right tackle. He signed with the Packers as an undrafted free agent in May.

Packers place rookie OT Caleb Jones on non-football illness list

The Packers placed rookie offensive tackle Caleb Jones on the Non-football illness list.

The Green Bay Packers placed offensive tackle Caleb Jones on the non-football illness list on Saturday.

Jones, a rookie undrafted free agent, missed all three days of practice this week an unspecified illness.

Placing Jones on the reserve list opens up a spot on the team’s 53-man roster entering Sunday’s showdown against the New England Patriots.

The Packers signed Jones from the practice squad on Sept. 13.

Over three preseason games, Jones played 84 snaps, all at left tackle. He allowed one pressure over 45 pass-blocking snaps.

At Indiana, Jones started 30 games, including 24 at right tackle. He signed with the Packers as an undrafted free agent in May.

In addition to placing Jones on the non-football illness list, the Packers elevated cornerback Kiondre Thomas from the practice squad to the gameday roster for Week 4.

Packers signing rookie OT Caleb Jones from practice squad

The Packers are signing OT Caleb Jones, the rookie undrafted free agent, from the team’s practice squad, per Aaron Wilson.

The Green Bay Packers are signing rookie offensive tackle Caleb Jones from the team’s practice squad, according to Aaron Wilson of PFN.

Jones, an undrafted free agent from Indiana, was one of the team’s best players during the preseason.

The rookie played 84 snaps at left tackle over three preseason games and allowed just one total pressure, per PFF. Jones (6-9, 370) graded out highly as both a pass protector and run blocker.

It’s unclear what the corresponding roster move will be, but linebacker Krys Barnes (ankle) will likely go on injured reserve at some point.

One note: The Packers already have 10 offensive linemen on the roster, so Jones would make it 11 if there’s not a move within the position group.

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers said he thought Jones deserved a spot on the 53-man roster to start the year. It’s certainly possible another team agreed and wanted to sign Jones to the 53-man roster, but the Packers acted first to prevent losing the promising rookie.

Offensive tackles David Bakhtiari and Elgton Jenkins were both inactive during Week 1 and could be out again in Week 2 against the Chicago Bears. Adding Jones from the practice squad would add extra depth at offensive tackle.

More on the transaction, and the corresponding roster move, should be known later Tuesday.

Packers signing rookie OT Caleb Jones to practice squad

The Packers returned impressive rookie Caleb Jones on the team’s practice squad.

Rookie offensive tackle Caleb Jones passed through waivers unclaimed and has been signed back to the practice squad of the Green Bay Packers, per Ryan Wood of the Green Bay Press-Gazette. Jones is currently in uniform and participating at Wednesday’s practice.

The Packers released Jones during final cutdowns on Tuesday, picking seventh-round pick Rasheed Walker as the 10th offensive lineman on the 53-man roster.

Jones, an undrafted free agent out of Indiana, impressed during camp and the preseason. Over three exhibition games, Jones allowed just one pressure and didn’t commit a penalty while playing exclusively at left tackle with the second-team offensive line.

Although there was some fear that Jones would get claimed after his impressive preseason, he went unclaimed on waivers, allowing the Packers to continue his developmental journey as a rookie in Green Bay.

Jones is a massive lineman at 6-9 and 370 pounds. His combination of size and performance in games during the preseason provides a strong foundation of future potential in the NFL.

Keep track of all the Packers’ practice squad signings on Wednesday here.

Packers releasing rookie training camp standout Caleb Jones

The Packers are releasing rookie left tackle Caleb Jones during final roster cuts. Will he make it back to the practice squad?

The Green Bay Packers will risk losing rookie offensive tackle Caleb Jones on waivers. According to Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the Packers are releasing Jones – who was excellent at left tackle over three preseason games – during final roster cuts on Tuesday.

The Packers originally signed Jones (6-9, 370) as an undrafted free agent out of Indiana.

Jones played 84 snaps at left tackle and finished second to only starting center Josh Myers in overall grade among offensive players at Pro Football Focus. He allowed only a single pressure, committed zero penalties and received strong grades as both a pass-blocker and run-blocker.

Jones’ combination of incredible size, preseason performance and future potential could make him an attractive player on the waiver wire on Wednesday. If not claimed, the expectation would be that Jones would return to Green Bay on the practice squad.

Will Jones come back, continue his development on the practice squad and eventually compete for a roster spot next year? Or will another team be enamored by his preseason tape and put in a waiver claim? General manager Brian Gutekunst will be crossing his fingers hoping it’s the former rather than the latter.
