It is time for the youth movement with Michigan State football

It is time to bench two veterans for more youthful players to round out MSU’s season

Michigan State football went on the road and dropped a pivotal game against Illinois on Saturday afternoon, 38-16, in a game that played a touch closer than the score.

Another tough loss for the Spartans in Jonathan Smith’s first year, this one in particular showed that there is a ton of things the Spartans need to fix and clean up.

For starters, there are two to three key positions that NEED to see changes.

Ashton Lepo at the right tackle position is a liability. While the offensive line unit as a whole has not been productive, Lepo has been abysmal. Graded consistently as the worst on the Spartans offensive line by PFF, Lepo has an awful 43.8 pass block rating by PFF.

Who replaces Lepo?

True freshman Rakeem Johnson has shown the ability to be an effective offensive lineman at this level, and quite frankly, it cannot get worse than Lepo – making it time to give Johnson a serious shot at the tackle spot to build for next year.

Michigan State football linebacker graded as one of the worst in the country by PFF

A certain MSU linebacker’s performance against Oregon was graded as one of the worst in the country by PFF:

First of all, let me say this. I don’t like to write posts like this very often. These are student-athletes, and even more, at MSU, these players have gone through so much frustration and adversity these last few years. That being said, I think it’s time to have an honest and respectful conversation about Michigan State linebacker Cal Haladay.

In Michigan State’s loss to Oregon this past weekend, it was astonishing how easy it was for the Ducks to run the ball. Oregon had 213 rushing yards, nearly as many as their passing total (264). One thing that became obvious to a lot of people watching was the play of Haladay, a player who has the reputation of a run-stopper, but it felt like he was always in the wrong place at the wrong time, missing gaps and tackles all night. Not ideal for the linebacker who wears the green dot on his helmet.

If the eye test wasn’t bad enough, Pro Football Focus (PFF) put out their weekly grades on Monday, and Haladay was graded at 36.9, the lowest grade of his career. This put him at 272 of 279 linebackers graded, nearly the worst in the entire country.

I have been trying to be patient and respectful of Haladay, but to be honest, I started to notice his flaws a few years ago, but mostly on the pass defense side. After MSU’s loss to Boston College, I politely suggested that Jordan Hall should start getting more snaps, but didn’t directly say that should come at Haladay’s expense. I’m ready to say that now. Jordan Hall and Wayne Matthews should start getting Cal Haladay’s snaps, in my opinion.

To add onto this… The Oregon game wasn’t just some blip or abnormality. Haladay has often struggled against dynamic teams, for his entire career. Check out some more of his career grades below:

I appreciate what Haladay has done for this team, and it’s honestly probably not entirely his fault, as his time at MSU was so tumultuous and chaotic, it is a difficult environment to learn a difficult position. But the time has come to let some other players have that opportunity, before the season is completely over.

Watch MSU LB Cal Haladay break down loss vs. Ohio State

Hear what MSU LB Cal Haladay had to say following the Spartans’ 38-7 loss vs. Ohio State on Saturday

Saturday night proved Michigan State football has a ways to go to beat the big boys, but they at least are more competitive with the top tier squads than we’ve seen the past two seasons.

The Spartans hung with the Buckeyes for most of the first half, but a late half score for Ohio State pushed their lead to three scores which ultimately was too big of a hole to overcome. The final score was 38-7 and was the Spartans’ ninth straight home loss to Ohio State.

With the loss, Michigan State drops to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in Big Ten play on the season. The Spartans have now lost two straight games, and have another tough game ahead at top 10 Oregon next week.

Following the loss, Michigan State linebacker Cal Haladay met with the media to discuss the game. Hear what he had to say in his post-game press conference in the video below:

Here is why Cal Haladay isn’t featured in the College Football 25 video game

We now know why Cal Haladay isn’t playable in the College Football 25 video game

After Michigan State football’s first practice of fall camp, MSU linebacker Cal Haladay was asked why he wasn’t a playable player in the new College Football 25 game from EA Sports. The simple answer? He forgot to opt-in.

College players had to opt-in to grant permission for their name, image, and likeness to be used in the game, but Haladay apparently forgot to do it in time. He did say he plans to try and get added in the next update.
