Colts waive C Alex Mollette, RB C.J. Verdell

The Colts waived C Alex Mollette and RB C.J. Verdell to bring the roster to 80 players.

The Indianapolis Colts waived center Alex Mollette and running back C.J. Verdell, the team announced Tuesday.

Following the second preseason game against the Detroit Lions, the Colts had to let go of four players on the roster to cut the squad down to 80 players for the final week of training camp.

Both Mollette and Verdell were undrafted free agents who signed with the Colts this offseason. Both players were at positions that had some solid depth, and it was going to be a long shot to make the roster in the first place.

With that said, both players are candidates for the practice squad when the final cuts are made following the preseason finale against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Predicting the Colts’ next round of roster cuts

The Colts must cut four players before Tuesday’s deadline. Here’s a prediction.

Once again, the Indianapolis Colts must cut their roster down by four players to shrink the roster to a total of 80 players.

The Colts currently have 84 players counting against the active roster following their latest transaction, which placed rookie tight end Andrew Ogletree on the injured reserve list.

Because defensive back Marcel Dabo does not count against the active roster, the Colts technically get an extra roster spot.

With the second preseason game over, the Colts have until Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. ET to make their cuts. The final roster cuts from 80 to 53 players will come Tuesday, Aug. 30.

Here’s our prediction for the next wave of roster cuts by the Colts:

Colts’ 2022 training camp preview: Running backs

Previewing the Colts backfield entering training camp.

The Indianapolis Colts will be entering training camp later this month boasting one of the best backfields in the entire NFL.

Having the league’s rushing champion from the previous season will help that narrative, but there also are plenty of diverse skill sets on the depth chart. Even though the top spots in the room are locked in, there will be an exciting battle for the one or two spots behind them throughout training camp and the preseason.
