Jaguars bring back QB C.J. Beathard

Jaguars bring back QB C.J. Beathard

With Jaguars starting quarterback Trevor Lawrence nursing a sore non-throwing shoulder entering Week 10, Jacksonville signed quarterback C.J. Beathard to its active roster and away from the Miami Dolphins’ practice squad on Wednesday.

A reunion, Beathard returns to the Jaguars after being released with an injury settlement in August. He hurt his groin in Jacksonville’s preseason finale against the Atlanta Falcons.

Beathard served as Lawrence’s backup from the latter’s rookie 2021 season through last year. Mac Jones snatched that position from Beathard this offseason following his trade to Jacksonville from New England in March.

Beathard completed 49-of-66 passes for 417 yards with one touchdown and one interception over 13 appearances with Jacksonville, including going 17-of-24 for 178 yards in his lone start with the Jaguars, a 26-0 win over the Carolina Panthers last season while Lawrence was sidelined due to injury.

An eighth-year pro, Beathard has completed 340-of-563 for 3,886 yards with 19 touchdowns and 14 interceptions in his NFL career.

Jaguars poach veteran QB from Dolphins practice squad

The Dolphins are back down to just two available quarterbacks.

The Jacksonville Jaguars reunited with their former backup quarterback C.J. Beathard, signing the eighth-year veteran from the Miami Dolphins’ practice squad Wednesday.

Beathard, 30, never took a snap with the Dolphins after signing with the team’s practice squad two weeks ago. Prior to that, he spent three years backing up Trevor Lawrence in Jacksonville. He began his career as a third-round pick with the San Francisco 49ers, where he spent the first four years of his professional career.

The Dolphins added Beathard to the roster after parting with Tim Boyle upon Tua Tagovailoa’s return from the injured reserve. Tyler Huntley, who started three games in the place of Tagovailoa, is currently on the Dolphins’ injured reserve.

Following the departure of Beathard, the only passers currently available to the Dolphins are Tagovailoa and Skylar Thompson. While that’s likely enough on Sundays, expect the team to add another quarterback to the practice squad if for no other reason than to have a third arm available in practices.

Former Jaguars QB signs with Dolphins practice squad

Former Jaguars QB signs with Dolphins practice squad

Former Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback C.J. Beathard signed to the Miami Dolphins practice squad on Wednesday.

The Jaguars released Beathard with an injury settlement in August after he hurt his groin during the preseason.

The move prevented Jacksonville from being able to bring him back through Week 7, per NFL rules, although now that the deadline has passed, it appears a reunion was not in the cards.

Beathard spent the 2021-23 seasons as Trevor Lawrence’s backup at quarterback, after beginning his career with the San Francisco 49ers in 2017.

He completed 49-of-66 passes for 417 yards with one touchdown and one interception over 13 appearances with Jacksonville, bringing his career passing line to 340-of-563 for 3,886 yards with 19 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.

Beathard joins the Dolphins amid their quarterback shuffle since starter Tua Tagovailoa suffered a concussion in Week 2, leading to his placement on the injured reserve. Tagovailoa is scheduled to return to practice Wednesday and could be activated from the reserve this week.

Skylar Thompson and Tyler Huntley have started in place of Tagovailoa for Miami, with Tim Boyle also receiving playing time. The Dolphins rank last in the NFL for averaging 11.7 points per game this season.

Dolphins add QB, WR to practice squad, cut ties with TE Hayden Rucci

The Dolphins now have five quarterbacks under contract.

The Miami Dolphins signed quarterback C.J. Beathard and wide receiver Tarik Black to their practice squad Wednesday, the team announced.

The Dolphins had one open spot on their practice squad after the Carolina Panthers signed Jonathan Harris on Tuesday. To make space for the duo they signed Wednesday, the Dolphins released rookie tight end Hayden Rucci.

Beathard, 30, was reportedly on the Dolphins’ “short list” back in September when Tua Tagovailoa was injured. The former Jacksonville Jaguars and San Francisco 49ers quarterback spent time with Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel early in his career. But Miami opted to sign Tim Boyle to the practice squad, instead.

With Tyler Huntley dealing with a shoulder injury and Tagovailoa still technically on the injured reserve, the addition of Beathard gives the Dolphins another passer to work with ahead of the expected Week 8 return of Tagovailoa.

Black, 26, has spent time with the Indianapolis Colts, New York Jets, Baltimore Ravens, and Pittsburgh Steelers. He’s only appeared in one career game, though, finishing with one reception for 10 yards in a 2021 game with the Jets.

Former Jaguars QB gets look from Giants

Former Jaguars QB gets look from Giants

Former Jaguars quarterback C.J. Beathard worked out for the Giants on Monday, per Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.

Jacksonville released Beathard, its former three-year backup quarterback to Trevor Lawrence, with an injury settlement in August after he hurt his groin during the preseason. His workout with New York marks his first reported activity in the NFL since being cut.

The Jaguars released Beathard understanding they would have to wait an extended period of time before bringing him back.

Per NFL rules, players who receive an injury settlement are free to sign with other teams upon clearance from their injury. However, the team they settle with must wait three additional weeks after clearance to re-acquire the player.

“We’ve got to wait at least seven weeks before that becomes an option for us,” Jaguars general manager Trent Baalke said regarding the possibility of re-signing Beathard on Aug. 27.

“It was a significant injury and it’s going to keep him away from ball for a while, at least four weeks of the season. Could be longer; could be shorter. Depends on how quickly he heals and how the rehab goes, but that’s the timeline right now.”

The Jaguars’ last win came with Beathard starting at quarterback, against the Panthers in Week 17 of the 2023 season while Lawrence was injured and unavailable.

Beathard completed 49-of-66 passes for 417 yards with one touchdown and one interception over 13 appearances with Jacksonville between 2021-23, bringing his career passing line to 340-of-563 for 3,886 yards with 19 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.

The Jaguars temporarily brought quarterback E.J. Perry in to replace Beathard during the preseason. They relegated Perry to the practice squad on Aug. 28, released him from the unit Aug. 29 and replaced him with undrafted rookie passer John Rhys Plumlee Aug. 30.

Giants worked out veteran QB C.J. Beathard, seven others

The New York Giants worked out several free agents on Monday, including veteran quarterback C.J. Beathard.

The New York Giants held private workouts in East Rutherford on Monday which will lead to the signing of return specialist Kearis Jackson.

However, Jackson was not the only free agent in town.

The Giants also hosted quarterback C.J. Beathard, defensive backs Lamar Jackson and Greg Stroman, and wide receivers Joseph Ngata, Joseph Scates, Bryan Thompson and Seth Williams.

Of the group, Beathard’s name looms largest simply because he’s a quarterback. However, it’s unnecessary to read much into that because the Giants hold weekly workouts featuring a number of positions in order to gather data and prepare for potential free agent needs down the line.

The 30-year-old Beathard was a third-round pick of the San Francisco 49ers in the 2017 NFL draft. He remained in the Bay Area through the 2020 season before joining the Jacksonville Jaguars, where he played the past three years.

In 32 career games (13 starts), Beathard has completed 60.4 percent of his passes for 3,886 yards, 19 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions. He’s compiled a 3-10 record.

With Daniel Jones and Drew Lock on the active roster and Tommy DeVito on the practice squad, there’s no room for or reason to sign Beathard now. But should there be an injury later in the season, head coach Brian Daboll & Co. now have the information they need on Beathard.

Do not be surprised if the Giants work out more quarterbacks in the coming weeks.

Former 49ers QB C.J. Beathard reportedly on Dolphins’ ‘short list’

C.J. Beathard, who spent four years with Mike McDaniel in San Francisco, is reportedly on the Dolphins’ radar.

Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback C.J. Beathard, who most recently had a three-year stint as a backup with the Jacksonville Jaguars, is reportedly on the Miami Dolphins’ radar in their hunt to add a new passer to the roster.

“I’m told C.J. Beathard is on the short list,” NBC’s Mike Florio reported Sunday night. “He knows the offense and has worked with coach Mike McDaniel in the past.”

Florio also poured water on the idea of former Dolphins top 10 draft pick Ryan Tannehill returning to his first NFL team.

“I’m told Tannehill wants to go somewhere where he’ll be a starter, not just for a week or two, but for the rest of the year,” Florio said.

Beathard, 30, spent the first four years of his career in San Francisco and was drafted by the team in 2017, the same year McDaniel arrived as a member of Kyle Shanahan’s staff. He made 12 starts with the team and finished with 18 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.

In three years with the Jaguars, Beathard made only one start in relief of Trevor Lawrence. Last year, he led Jacksonville to a 26-0 win against the Carolina Panthers with 17 completions on 24 attempts for 178 yards without any touchdowns or interceptions.

Beathard battled former New England Patriots’ first-round pick Mac Jones to keep his backup role in Jacksonville, but lost the job, in part, because of a groin injury suffered in preseason.

Nine Jaguars ruled out of preseason finale vs. Falcons

Nine Jaguars ruled out of preseason finale vs. Falcons

Nine Jaguars were ruled out of Jacksonville’s Friday preseason finale at Atlanta, just before kickoff.

Defensive lineman Arik Armstead (knee), linebacker Foyesade Oluokun (undisclosed), cornerback Christian Braswell (undisclosed), safeties Andrew Wingard (knee), Daniel Thomas (foot) and Tashaun Gipson Sr. (undisclosed), and running back Keilan Robinson (toe) were deemed inactive on Friday.

Additionally, Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson ruled out starting slot receiver Christian Kirk (calf) and reserve quarterback C.J. Beathard (groin) earlier in the week, citing precaution in sidelining Kirk for a second consecutive preseason game.

“Christian will miss again. Still [his] calf,” Pederson said Monday. “Feeling good, but I’m just going to hold him out this week.”

Perhaps most notably, Armstead, the prize of Jacksonville’s offseason free agency class, will not make his long-awaited Jaguars debut despite practicing with the team for the first time this week.

Armstead signed a three-year, $43.5 million contract with the Jaguars in March following February surgery on a knee injury suffered with San Francisco last season. He opened Jacksonville’s training camp on the physically unable to perform list but was activated on Aug. 13.

Jaguars vs. Falcons: Preview, odds, where to watch, stream and more

Press Taylor explains Jaguars making late preseason QB move

Press Taylor explains Jaguars making late preseason QB move

The Jaguars will likely take two quarterbacks into the 2024 season on their active roster, as they have done in each of Doug Pederson’s two years as Jacksonville’s head coach.

But the Jaguars added a fourth quarterback to their roster Wednesday morning, officially signing E.J. Perry away from the Michigan Panthers of the United Football League ahead of Jacksonville’s Friday preseason finale at Atlanta.

Jaguars offensive coordinator pointed toward the groin injury backup quarterback C.J. Beathard suffered against Tampa Bay on Saturday as the reason for Perry’s return to Jacksonville for a third stint with the team.

“Part of that was just that C.J.’s health just moving forward to make sure as we go into this next game, just not limiting our ability to play this game out as we go,” Taylor explained Wednesday.

Beathard will be sidelined against the Falcons Friday, per Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson.

Quarterback Trevor Lawrence and Jacksonvlle’s starting offense are slated to play for about the entire first half, leading only one healthy passer for the second before Perry’s signing, Mac Jones.

Perry’s recent previous experience with the Jaguars — with whom he first joined as an undrafted free agent and spent his rookie season as a practice squad member in 2022, and returned to last December while Lawrence was in concussion protocol — should allow him to step into action if needed this week.

“E.J. is a guy we obviously have trust in and he’s been around us,” said Taylor. “He’s a guy that we can bring in at the very last minute and he is going to know 50 to 75 percent of the terminology from the jump.

“Guys are familiar with him, which I think that’s a part of it as well. Not everybody’s played with him, but a lot of guys have been here just through his time on and off the roster.”

In addition to his time with Jacksonville, Perry also spent offseason and preseason time with Houston last year.

Perry has yet to attempt a pass or appear in a game in the NFL, but has completed 67-of-112 attempts for 785 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions with Michigan in the UFL and USFL.

Over five years in college, two seasons with Boston College and three with Brown, Perry completed 63.5% of his 900 throws for 6,247 yards with 47 touchdowns and 27 interceptions, adding 16 scores on the ground.

“[E.J. is] a guy that we have confidence in as a coaching staff can help us through a game situation here,” Taylor concluded.

Doug Pederson updates Jaguars QB C.J. Beathard’s injury status

Doug Pederson updates Jaguars QB C.J. Beathard’s injury status

Jaguars quarterback C.J. Beathard won’t play in the club’s 2024 preseason finale at Atlanta after suffering a groin injury during Jacksonville’s Saturday victory over Tampa Bay, according to head coach Doug Pederson.

Beathard exited the matchup after completing five-of-seven passes for 40 yards, all in the second half after Mac Jones started the game against the Buccaneers.

“Groin, [Beathard] re-injured that one,” Pederson said. “He’ll miss this week.”

Beathard had previously hurt his groin during Jacksonville’s 2022 training camp, which led him to be carted off the practice field.

Jones re-entered the game after going 11-of-18 passing for 144 yards and one touchdown in the first half, completing all five of his throws for 66 yards and another score. He finished the contest 16-of-23 for 210 yards and two touchdowns.

With one week left in the preseason and Jones and Beathard’s competition for the Jaguars’ backup quarterback role behind Trevor Lawrence, the former appears to be in the driver’s seat.

Jacksonville traded for Jones in March, securing New England’s 2021 first-round NFL draft pick in exchange for a sixth-round selection this year. Jones completed 66.1% of his passes for 8,918 yards with 46 touchdowns and 36 interceptions in three seasons with the Patriots.

Beathard has served as Lawrence’s backup since 2021, the latter’s rookie campaign. In 13 appearances including one start with Jacksonville, Beathard has gone 49-of-66 (74.2%) for 417 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

Over seven pro seasons, beginning in San Francisco, Beathard has completed 58.6% of his throws for 3,469 yards with 18 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.
