NFL Week 14 betting recap: A sleepy week for the NFL’s best teams

Some big Week 14 favorites failed to cover. There’s probably not much cause for concern.

Not to make excuses for some of the NFL’s better teams, but I’m inclined to believe the more surprising results of Week 14 were mere aberrations. Good teams on auto-pilot that struggled to get up for games against not-so-good teams.

The biggest favorite of the week, the Dallas Cowboys needed a game-winning drive in the final seconds of the fourth quarter to beat the 17-point underdog Houston Texans. The next-biggest favorite at 9.5 points, the Kansas City Chiefs allowed the Denver Broncos to climb out of a 27-0 hole before barely edging them out by six.

The Buffalo Bills also failed to cover as nine-point favorites over the New York Jets, though their opponent was at least formidable.

I’m not taking a whole lot from any of these games. The Bills, Chiefs and Cowboys are still some of the best teams in the NFL. But I do expect to see more good teams play down to their competition in the coming weeks. This is just the point in the season where we all know who the bad teams are, the good teams find it harder to get up for those games and the underdogs want to play spoiler.

Does that mean Houston will cover 14 points against Kansas City this coming week? I wouldn’t go that far. But hey, you never know.

Report: Bills have shown interest in free agent CB Prince Amukamara

According to ESPN, the Buffalo Bills have shown interest in free agent cornerback Prince Amukamara.

The Buffalo Bills have had their share of injuries to the cornerback position already during the 2020 season. Most notably, Josh Norman, a veteran free agent signee from this offseason landed on the injured reserve list prior to the team’s season opener against the Jets.

Since then, the Bills have worked out a few cornerbacks and made a few noteworthy movements in regard to the position group. On Wednesday, another arrive via Prince Amukamara.

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Folwer, the Bills are a team that have shown some level of interest in the defensive back. The 31-year-old was released by the Raiders in a bit of a surprise move this offseason, considering he signed a one-year deal with the team in May. He was expected to start, but rookie Damon Arnette, a first-round rookie from the recent NFL Draft, impressed during training camp leading to Amukamara’s release.

A 2011 first-round pick of the Giants, he won Super Bowl XLVI in his rookie season. That year Amukamara did break his foot holding him to seven games and missed multiple games early in his career with the Giants due to injury. However, since signing with the Jaguars in 2016, Amukamara has played in at least 14 games per season. From 2017-2019, Amukamara was with the Bears.

Amukamara has 10 career interceptions in 113 games (99 starts) with 78 passes defensed and six forced fumbles. Per Fowler’s report, the Lions have also shown interest in signing him.

Bills sign WR Jake Kumerow to practice squad

Jake Kumerow joins Buffalo Bills practice squad.

When the Buffalo Bills first initially announced their final 53-man roster this weekend and 17-man practice squad, each and every player was someone who spent training camp with the team. No outside additions during or after the wavier wire period.

On Tuesday, that changed. The Bills announced that wide receiver Jake Kumerow was signed to the team’s practice squad. In a corresponding move, offensive lineman Brandon Walton was released.

B/R: Jake Fromm drafted by wrong team in Bills

Bleacher Report on the Buffalo Bills’ decision to draft quarterback Jake Fromm.

Quarterback Jake Fromm was certainly an interesting pick by the Buffalo Bills at the 2020 NFL Draft.

Bleacher Report has now since called it a bad pick as well.

B/R dubbed some prospects from the recent draft and declared that they were drafted by the wrong team. Among them is Fromm.

Here’s how B/R explains it:

Fromm’s game doesn’t resemble that of mobile, strong-armed starter Josh Allen at all. So if he were forced into action, the Bills would have to change their offensive strategy to fit Fromm’s style. That’s typically something coordinators don’t want to do if their starter goes down.

Another issue is Fromm’s lack of arm strength. It is one of the biggest reasons he fell to the fifth round, as he has an average arm at best. And for a team like Buffalo that plays in a stadium with strong winds and poor weather, his lack of arm talent will be on full display. It’s tough to envision Fromm cutting through the wind and driving the ball to the sidelines in Buffalo. He will always be capped as a passer there.

Fromm and Allen certainly are not built from the same mold. But in this sense, the Bills do have one thing on their side: Neither is Matt Barkley. Had Allen been pulled for a game for Barkley, the offense would’ve had to change. So either way, the Bills were not going to have a similar backup to their starter, might as well get a younger guy in there that could turn into something. We already know Barkley’s ceiling.

Unfortunately Fromm’s arm strength is something the team likely can’t change. It is a bit concerning as well since Fromm is a bit of a reminder of Nathan Peterman. His arm strength held him back severely with the Bills.

B/R goes on to explain that the Raiders or Cowboys would have been potentially better landing spots for Fromm.
