Why Buffalo Will Win

It hasn’t been consistent and it hasn’t always looked great, but Buffalo is 2-0 in the MAC by not committing penalties, holding up defensively, and owning the clock and the tempo.

Versatile, the Bulls were able to throw well against Eastern Michigan, and it got the big defensive stops in the ugly win over Miami University.

Bowling Green can’t stop anything on third downs – it’s the third-worst team in the country at it – and the D is allowing close to 500 yards per game, but …

Why Bowling Green Will Win

The passing game is working.

This still isn’t a dominant Falcon team, but unlike the past few years the offense is starting to look the part. The ground game is occasionally a factor, but Matt McDonald and the passing attack that’s not turning the ball over enough to matters is the difference.

Buffalo can be run on, but even more importantly, there’s no pass rush. Bowling Green will get time to throw.

What’s Going To Happen

Bowling Green has shown it can find ways to win when the defense comes up with with three takeaways – it’s 2-0 when it does, 0-3 when it doesn’t. Buffalo only turned it over more than twice in the loss to Coastal Carolina.

Central Michigan needed a minor miracle, and they got one when a blast of winter weather hit DeKalb, Illinois, helping out Northern Illinois stun the MAC’s best offensive team in a 17-14 win over Western Michigan.

That WMU loss means that CMU takes the MAC West and will go on to face Miami University for the conference title with a win over Toledo.

The Rockets have lost two straight and desperately need another win to be almost assured of a bowl appearance. They’re eligible, but with so many teams with six or more wins, seven should assure a post-season exhibition game.

They live thanks to the MAC’s best running game with 200 yards or more six times in eight games before being held in check by Buffalo.

The Central Michigan run defense is solid.

Overall, the D is great at coming up with takeaways. It’ll force three takeaways, the defensive front will come up with enough big plays to get stall the Rocket O on several third downs, and it’ll survive a late rally at home to pull off the win and get into the MAC Championship.

The RedHawks have bigger fish to fry.

They’ve already won the MAC East, and they played like it in a 20-17 win over an Akron team that might be the worst in the country.

Ball State is on a four-game losing streak and blow its shot to stay in the hunt for a bowl with a loss at Kent State. This is it for the Cardinals.

Miami might be on a five-game winning streak, and it’ll play hard, but Ball State will do a wee bit more on Senior Day. The RedHawks have to simply stay healthy.

The Ball State offense has a bit more pop, it’s not making big mistakes, and it’ll do just enough on the offensive front to keep the swarming RedHawk defensive line from taking over the game.

MU won’t be able to move the ball well enough in the second half with two turnovers becoming a problem late.

Can Eastern Michigan spoil what would be an amazing finish and one of the season’s best stories?

Kent State was competitive over a three-game MAC losing streak, but it appeared be another losing season after getting down big to Buffalo. And then came the epic comeback in a 30-27 shocker. The Golden Flashes followed it up with a win over Ball State to get within a win of bowl eligibility.

Eastern Michigan is already bowl eligible, but it needs a seventh win to boost its opportunities – there will be several MAC teams in the bowl mix.

What’s Kent State doing right? The passing game has been great at times over the second half of the season with a 369-yard day against Ball State last week.

But Eastern Michigan’s offense is humming, too.

The Eagles are balanced, but the Kent State offensive line is playing a wee bit better and the offense is a little bit sharper.

Buffalo is already bowl eligible, but with several MAC teams in the mix for an extra game, getting to seven wins is a must to all but assure a spot somewhere.

The Bulls bounced back from the disaster against Kent State to whack Toledo for the fourth win in five games, and now they get a Falcon team on a run of four losses in the last five games.

Bowling Green lost to East champ Miami and Ohio over the last two weeks by a combined score of 110 to 27, and the defense is about to be in for a long day again against the UB offense that’s scoring in bunches.

The Falcons don’t have a downfield passing game as is, and now it has to deal with the pressure from the MAC’s best pass rush. UB’s O will score 40+ points for the fourth time in the last five games with a running game that will rumble for 250 yards without an issue.
