S Budda Baker questionable to play vs. 49ers with illness

Baker was a Sunday addition to the team’s injury report.

The Arizona Cardinals made a late addition to their Week 15 injury report. On Sunday safety Budda Baker was added to the injury report with an illness. He is now officially questionable to play as the team hosts the San Francisco 49ers Sunday afternoon.

Baker has 58 tackles this season in eight games played. He missed the Cardinals’ first game against the 49ers in Week 4. He was on injured reserve with a hamstring injury.

History says he will likely play but we will see. He will likely try to tough it out and play.

Inactive lists will be released 90 minutes before the Cardinals 2:05 p.m. Arizona time kickoff.

For the Cardinals, that player is safety Budda Baker. Baker is a finalist.

The league announced eight finalists for the award and Baker is part of the group, selected by a panel of NFL legends, which includes former Cardinals legend Larry Fitzgerald and Warrick Dunn, Curtin Martin and Leonard Wheeler.

The NFL announced all 32 franchises’ player nominees for the 2023 Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award. For the second straight year, the Arizona Cardinals nominated safety Budda Baker.

The award recognizes players around the league who exemplify outstanding sportsmanship on the field.

The award was created in 2014, honoring the late founding owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pro Football Hall of Famer Art Rooney Sr.

A panel of former players from the NFL Legends Community — Warrick Dunn, 2014 Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award recipient Larry Fitzgerald, Pro Football Hall of Famer Curtis Martin and Leonard Wheeler —  will select eight finalists (four in the AFC and four in the NFC) from the 32 nominees. The eight finalists will be listed on the Pro Bowl ballot under the NFL Sportsmanship Award category when players vote in December.

NFL trade deadline: 17 top players who could be available in a deal (Derrick Henry!)

Derrick Henry is just one of many NFL names who could be traded soon.

We are past the days of the NFL trade deadline being a dormant period of inactivity.

In recent years, general managers and head coaches have clearly realized it isn’t that hard to integrate new players mid-season. If a good team needs pieces to make a real playoff or championship run, it usually sheds its inhibitions now. Heck, I certainly don’t blame the Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers for going all out by adding Von Miller and Christian McCaffrey in 2021 and 2022, respectively.

All this to say: Expect more of the same at this year’s 4 p.m. ET deadline on Halloween. Squads are no longer apprehensive about adding talent where they can. And anyone willing to sell understands it’s worth getting pieces for the future rather than riding out a middling or lost season. That means more fireworks and more whirlwind fun to keep track of in the coming days.

Buckle up.

Below is a list of top NFL veterans who could be traded before Halloween. Some are more obvious — take a particular veteran running back, for example. Others will require some prudence and forward-thinking from organizations that should realize there’s nothing left to play for in 2023.

Note: This is not a ranking.

Cardinals inactives: Budda Baker, Garrett Williams to play vs. Seahawks

Budda Baker returns to the starting lineup after missing five games with a hamstring injury.

The Arizona Cardinals released their list of inactive players 90 minutes before kickoff of their Week 7 road matchup against the Seattle Seahawks. They got reinforcements for a banged-up secondary.

Safety Budda Baker, activated from injured reserve after being out five weeks with a hamstring injury, dressed and was set to start. Rookie cornerback Garrett Williams, activated from the non-football injury list, would make his debut. While Baker would start, Williams’ role is unknown.

The Cardinals’ inactive players were no surprise.

Arizona Cardinals Week 7 inactives

  • WR Zach Pascal
  • S Qwuantrezz Knight
  • LB Jesse Luketa
  • CB Antonio Hamilton
  • S Jalen Thompson
  • OL Carter O’Donnell
  • OL Elijah Wilkinson

Pascal was questionable with a neck injury and did not practice all week. Hamilton was ruled out with a groin injury and Thompson misses his second straight game with a hamstring injury. Wilkinson was out with a neck injury.

Dennis Daley will start in Wilkinson’s place at left guard.

Baker’s return balances Thompson’s absence at safety. Baker and K’Von Wallace will start. With both Thompson and Hamilton out, the question is who will play in the slot.

Luketa is inactive for the second straight week.

Rookie tight end Elijah Higgins will make his NFL debut. He is active for the first time this season. He probably will fill Pascal’s role on special teams and perhaps on offense.

Cardinals players to watch in Week 7 vs. Seahawks

Here are the individual players to watch in Week 7 for the Cardinals.

The Arizona Cardinals play on Sunday on the road against the Seattle Seahawks. They hope to snap their three-game losing streak and pick up their first road win of the year.

In this game, our eyes will be on a few players in particular.

Who and why?

We explain it below.

Cardinals activate Budda Baker for game against the Seahawks

Yesterday the Cardinals activated former Huskies strong safety Budda Baker.

The Arizona Cardinals are a bit shorthanded heading into today’s game against the Seattle Seahawks. So far this season their best playmaker has been running back James Conner. However, he’s currently on their IR list with a knee injury. Franchise quarterback Kyler Murray is practicing again but he’s also out this week, as he’s still on the PUP list.

However, Arizona is getting a key piece back in the lineup against Seattle. Yesterday the Cardinals activated former Huskies safety Budda Baker.

With Murray sidelined Baker is the best player on Arizona’s roster. In 94 career games he has posted 32 tackles for a loss, six forced fumbles, 7.5 sacks, seven interceptions and 15 quarterback hits, demonstrating his ability to make an impact across the board. Baker has made five Pro Bowls and two All-Pro teams.

6 things to know about the Seahawks and Cards

Cardinals activate S Budda Baker, CB Garrett Williams for game vs. Seahawks

Baker missed the last five games with a hamstring injury. Williams will make his NFL debut.

The Arizona Cardinals get reinforcements in the secondary for their Week 7 matchup on the road against the Seattle Seahawks. They announced some roster moves Saturday and have activated safety Budda Baker from injured reserve and rookie cornerback Garrett Williams from the non-football injury reserve.

Both are expected to play on Sunday. Because the Cardinals released running back Tony Jones and linebacker Myjai Sanders, they already had two roster vacancies. As such, they did not need to release anyone.

Baker missed five games after injuring his hamstring in Week 1. He spent four game on injured reserve. He said earlier in the week that it was expected to be a six-week injury but he worked to cut that down. His return is timely, as fellow safety Jalen Thompson will miss his second straight game with a hamstring injury.

Williams will make his NFL debut. He tore his ACL while playing collegiately for Syracuse last October. The Cardinals drafted him in the third round this year.

He could get to play right away. Antonio Hamilton is out with a groin injury so Williams could either be the third cornerback after Marco Wilson and Kei’Trel Clark, who is also questionable with a hamstring injury, or he could be the fourth corner in the rotation after Starling Thomas.

The NFL trade deadline is slated for October 31, and with the expected Halloween deals likely to make it a historic day, we’re tracking whether Philadelphia will be buyers ahead of the stretch run.

The Athletic’s Dianna Russini reports that GM Howie Roseman has been “working the phones” diligently, looking to add an impact defender, preferably at the safety position.

Eagles general manager Howie Roseman always has some magic up his sleeve, and he’s been working the phone. The Eagles are apparently staying put on running back Rashaad Penny, knowing depth will be necessary for a team that should be making a long postseason run. Philly is looking to make some additions on defense after they suffered a handful of injuries in the defensive backfield, specifically targeting a safety.

Second-year safety Reed Blankenship has dealt with rib injuries.

At the same time, Justin Evans has missed time with multiple injuries, along with rookie Sydney Brown, who missed three games with a hamstring injury.

The names the Eagles could target include Budda Baker and Justin Simmons, to name a few.
