6 takeaways from the Jets’ Week 17 loss to the Buccaneers

The Jets had the Buccaneers on the ropes, but squandered their lead down the stretch. Takeaways from New York’s Week 17 loss:

Zach Wilson was on the verge of becoming the fifth Jets quarterback to defeat Tom Brady. Then, Mike LaFleur dialed up his worst play call as an offensive coordinator.

The Buccaneers took advantage to pull out a late 28-24 win.

New York had Tampa Bay on the ropes, but couldn’t close out a game in which it led by 14 points in the fourth quarter. The Jets have experienced their fair share of bad losses in 2021, but that was arguably the most excruciating of them all.

Here are six takeaways from New York’s Week 17 loss.

WATCH: Antonio Brown abandons Buccaneers during game vs. Jets

Antonio Brown abandoned the Buccaneers midway through their Week 17 matchup with the Jets.

Antonio Brown’s off-the-field issues have been well-documented throughout his career. Those issues carried onto the field against the Jets in Week 17, as the Buccaneers’ star wide receiver abandoned his team midway through the third quarter.

Brown, who was visibly frustrated with something on the sideline, ripped off his shoulder pads and threw his shirt and gloves into the crowd before leaving the field. Brown trotted through the Jets’ end zone on his way to the locker room, trying to pump up the crowd as he departed.

Brown caught three of five targets for 26 yards before leaving the Buccaneers. The Jets currently lead Tampa Bay 24-17 early in the fourth quarter.

Buccaneers vs. Jets inactives: Jamison Crowder out for a second straight week

The Jets will be without wide receiver Jamison Crowder for a second straight week due to a calf injury.

The Jets will be without their starting slot receiver for a second straight week, as Jamison Crowder is inactive against the Buccaneers.

Crowder missed New York’s Week 16 win over the Jaguars with a calf injury and that same injury kept him out of practice this week. Braxton Berrios is once again in line to take on an increased role in the Jets’ passing attack. Crowder has caught 50 passes for 431 yards and two touchdowns in 11 games this season.

New York’s defensive line depth also suffered a hit on Sunday morning, as Kyle Phillips was placed on the COVID list. Tevin Coleman and Tyler Kroft are also on the COVID list and out in Week 17.

Rounding out Gang Green’s inactives are Mike White, La’Mical Perine, recently-signed Javin White, Shaq Lawson and Isaiah Dunn. Bryce Hall returns from the COVID list against Tampa Bay, while Ronnie Blair, Dan Brown, Lamar Jackson and DJ Montgomery were elevated from the practice squad.

Inactive for the Buccaneers are Kyle Trask, Richard Sherman, Justin Watson, Dee Delaney, Elijah Ponder, Shaq Barrett and Jason Pierre-Paul. Barrett and Pierre-Paul have been Tampa Bay’s most productive pass rushers in 2021, while Sherman has factored into the cornerback rotation since signing with the team just after the beginning of the regular season.

Buccaneers head coach Bruce Arians tested out of COVID protocol and will be on the sideline in Week 17.

Jets are massive underdogs in Week 17 matchup with Buccaneers

Oddsmakers aren’t giving the Jets a good chance to beat Tom Brady and the Buccaneers in Week 17.

The Jets were favored for the first time this season last weekend when they hosted the Jaguars at MetLife Stadium. It’s back to the short end of the stick for New York this weekend, though, as Tom Brady and the defending Super Bowl champion Buccaneers are in town.

Tipico Sportsbook lists the Jets as 12.5-point underdogs for their Week 17 matchup with the Buccaneers. New York is fresh off its fourth win of the season, but Tampa Bay is operating on a different level despite a recent rash of injuries. The Bucs are 11-4, and playoff seeding is still up for grabs.

The Jets are -105 (bet $105 to win $100) to cover their end of the spread, while the Buccaneers are -115 (bet $115 to win $100). Tampa Bay has won six games by at least 13 points this season, making it entirely possible it holds up its end of the bargain on Sunday.

The over/under is 45.5. Gang Green’s money line is +470 (bet $100 to win $470), the Buccaneers are – 700 (bet $700 to win $100) on the money line.

The Jets are hours away from returning to action after getting back into the win column against the Jaguars in Week 16.

It will be tough for New York to make it two in a row with Tom Brady and the Buccaneers coming to MetLife Stadium. Tampa Bay is playing for playoff seeding and is just one game back of the top spot in the NFC. The Jets might be 4-11 and dead last in the AFC East with just two weeks left to play, but there is still plenty on the line in their Week 17 matchup.

Buccaneers vs. Jets: Reunions and injuries among 6 Week 17 storylines

The Jets are dealing with injuries and the Buccaneers might be without their head coach due to COVID-19. Storylines for Week 17:

It won’t be easy against the defending Super Bowl champions, but the Jets have a chance to build their first winning streak of the season when the Buccaneers come to MetLife Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Tampa Bay’s last trip to East Rutherford, in 2013, ended in controversy, as an unnecessary roughness penalty for a late hit out of bounds on Geno Smith allowed Nick Folk to boot a 48-yard field goal to give the Jets a thrilling win. A lot has changed since then, as the Buccaneers now have the greatest quarterback in NFL history under center.

Here are six storylines to know before the Jets and the Buccaneers battle.

Robert Saleh says there’s no debate: Tom Brady is the GOAT

There’s no doubt about it for Jets head coach Robert Saleh: Tom Brady is the greatest quarterback to ever play in the NFL.

Robert Saleh has dealt with the unenviable task of game planning to stop elite quarterbacks throughout his coaching career. From Patrick Mahomes in the Super Bowl to Russell Wilson twice a year, Saleh saw it all during his time as the 49ers’ defensive coordinator.

One signal-caller stands head and shoulders above the rest when it comes to the best Saleh has ever seen, though, and it’s easy to understand why.

Tom Brady and the Buccaneers come to MetLife Stadium on Sunday. Brady is more than familiar with making trips to East Rutherford, but Week 17 will be the first time he plays the Jets =as a member of the Bucs. Saleh is ready to take on the task of slowing Brady down, but stifling the quarterback is easier said than done.

“He’s phenomenal,” Saleh said Wednesday. “Just watching his tape [Tuesday], I’m in absolute awe of his pocket presence, his footwork, just all of it. His decision-making. He’s an absolute stud and no question the greatest that’s ever played the position. Anyone who questions it, just look at the amount of rings he has.”

Brady has been his usual dominant self in his 22nd season, throwing for 4,580 yards and 37 touchdowns to just 11 interceptions. The Buccaneers are 11-4 and Brady is an MVP favorite with his team having a legitimate chance to repeat as Super Bowl champions.

“He’s literally twice my age. I think I was in the womb when he was in college,” rookie Jason Pinnock said. “It’s Tom Brady. It’s a tremendous opportunity. I’m a young guy, to go up against the wise old GOAT, I’m looking forward to it.”

Week 17 is meaningless for the Jets in the sense that they’re 4-11 and dead last in the AFC East. The chance to play a future Hall of Fame quarterback doesn’t come around all that often, though, giving New York some added incentive to put its best foot forward when Tampa Bay comes to town.

“If you ever wanted to see what a coach would look like if he still had the ability to play, well, there he is. Tom,” Saleh said. “He’s playing better than he’s ever played. He looks phenomenal.”
