Panthers HC Dave Canales explains why he has yet to name starting QB for Week 10

Panthers HC Dave Canales hasn’t named his starting QB for Week 10 just yet. Here’s why:

Picking, or at least announcing, a starting quarterback may not be as cut and dry for the Carolina Panthers as some may think.

Just as the case was right after yesterday’s 23-22 win over the New Orleans Saints, head coach Dave Canales did not name his team’s Week 10 starting quarterback on Monday. He remained non-committal about publicly choosing between veteran Andy Dalton and 2023 No. 1 overall pick Bryce Young, who led the Panthers to their second victory of the season in Week 9.

“So we’re working through it right now,” Canales told reporters this afternoon. “Still just tryin’ to make sure we think about all the things that go into it, make sure we’re all on the same page, communicating that and we’ll make a decision in the next couple days.”

The 2-7 Panthers are set to travel to Germany to “host” the 2-7 New York Giants this weekend. Young, the starter for the last two outings, has taken some positive steps forward since his benching and seems to be the favorite to stick under center.

Canales was then asked if keeping the choice under wraps may also be a bit of gamesmanship on Carolina’s part.

“It’s both, it’s all of it,” he replied. “It’s just making sure that we make the right decision first for all for us, but then also, just making sure–there’s a component of it too, like the sooner (the Giants) know who they’re game planning for, the sooner they can get it.

“So, there’s no competitive advantage to making that decision. But mostly, it’s just about us taking all the information that we have right now.”

Over the past two weeks in the starting lineup, Young completed 63.5 percent of his throws for 395 yards, three touchdowns and three picks.

Dalton’s last start came in Week 7, where he threw for 93 yards and two interceptions in a 40-7 loss to the Washington Commanders.

Panthers still don’t commit to a starting QB for Week 10 matchup vs. Giants

The Panthers still haven’t decided if it’ll be Bryce Young or Andy Dalton under center in Week 10.

The Carolina Panthers still haven’t settled on a starting quarterback for their trip to Germany.

Head coach Dave Canales told reporters on Monday that the team has not officially decided on who will start under center in the Week 10 matchup against the New York Giants.

“So we’re working through it right now,” Canales stated this afternoon. “Still just tryin’ to make sure we think about all the things that go into it, make sure we’re all on the same page, communicating that and we’ll make a decision in the next couple days.”

Second-year quarterback and 2023 No. 1 overall pick Bryce Young got the nod in yesterday’s 23-22 win over the New Orleans Saints. Young completed 16 of his 26 attempts for 171 yards, a touchdown and an interception, and led the first game-winning touchdown drive of his NFL career.

Week 9 marked Young’s second appearance back in the starting lineup since being benched for 14th-year veteran Andy Dalton. Dalton, who injured his right thumb in a minor car accident ahead of Week 8, passed for 93 yards and two interceptions in his last contest.

Panthers QB Bryce Young talks about his victorious Week 9 start

Panthers QB Bryce Young experienced the victory formation for the first time in his NFL career on Sunday.

Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young might’ve been feeling extra blessed when he took the lectern on Sunday afternoon.

But before taking questions from reporters, Young led his team to a thrilling 23-22 upset over the visiting New Orleans Saints. That win ended on the first-ever victory formation in the NFL for Young, whose previous two wins as a starter came on walk-off field goals.

So, he’d be asked how that taking that final knee felt.

“Yeah, it feels great. It feels great,” an exuberant Young stated. “You definitely don’t take it for granted. So, yeah, it’s a great feeling.

Young seemed to be feeling great throughout the second start back from his benching. He completed 16 of his 26 throws for 171 yards, a touchdown and an interception—one that was snatched away from the hands of his own receiver.

Sunday not only played host to the third win for Young as a starter, but also the first game-winning touchdown drive of his pro career. With the Panthers down 22-17 at the 3:26 mark of the fourth quarter, the former No. 1 overall pick would orchestrate a four-play, 64-yard visit to the end zone.

He was asked what he was thinking at the start of the possession.

“Where else would you rather be?” he replied. “That’s all you can ask for—have a chance to go take the lead in a drive. That’s what we play for, that’s what we work for—especially as an offense, that’s all we can ask for.”

Chase Young’s long-awaited sack didn’t even count

Chase Young’s long-awaited third sack against the Carolina Panthers was all for naught. The play didn’t count, and the box score shut him out:

Chase Young only had two sacks over the course of eight games with the New Orleans Saints, and even though his drought ended against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, it was all for naught.

Young’s sack on Panthers quarterback Bryce Young occurred on a two-point try in the final two minutes of the fourth quarter and therefore did not ultimately count. He was shut out on the box score.

And, to make matters even worse, it happened in a game the Saints lost so closely, falling 23-22 to the Panthers.

He came into the game with — and still totals for that matter — 18 combined tackles (11 solo) with two sacks and one pass defensed. As a player who was formerly a second overall pick, he has far from lived up to the expectations of what he was supposed to be coming out of Ohio State.

The Saints now sit on a seven-game losing streak with a legitimate case to be one of the worst teams in the NFL. Getting back to the right side of the win column will be essential as New Orleans continues its season against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, Nov. 10.

That’s going to be a tough task given just how hot the Falcons are right now, coming off of a 27-21 win over the Dallas Cowboys as firmly the best team in the NFC South.

Panthers HC Dave Canales gives his thoughts on Bryce Young’s triumphant Week 9 performance

Panthers HC Dave Canales called Bryce Young’s Week 9 performance a “great step.”

There’s still a deep dive to be had on Monday, but Carolina Panthers head coach Dave Canales liked what he saw out of quarterback Bryce Young on Sunday.

Young helped push the Panthers to a thrilling upset victory over the New Orleans Saints in Week 9, as he led the first game-winning touchdown drive of his career en route to a 23-22 triumph. Canales was asked to assess his 23-year-old passer’s performance in his post-game press conference.

“Solid,” he replied. “I gotta look at the whole thing, gotta watch the film and all that stuff. But he came up big in some critical moments, and gave us an opportunity a couple of times. So, again, just proud of the step that he took again. Just taking all the things we’re askin’ him to do, getting us to the right place at the right time. So, great step.”

After a relatively solid showing against a tough Denver Broncos defense last week, Young carried over his efficiency and poise to this afternoon. He completed 16 of his 26 attempts for 171 yards, a touchdown and an interception that was to no fault of his own.

That game-winning drive came with the Panthers down 22-17 at the 3:26 mark of the fourth quarter. Four plays and 64 yards later, Carolina hit the end zone on a 16-yard rush from running back Chuba Hubbard.

The victory is now the third of Young’s career as a starter.

Panthers HC Dave Canales doesn’t commit to Bryce Young as Week 10 starter

Even after a triumphant showing in Week 9, Panthers HC Dave Canales isn’t ready to name Bryce Young as the starting QB for Week 10.

Did Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young do enough in Sunday’s triumphant outing to secure the starting nod over Andy Dalton next week? We’ll soon find out.

Head coach Dave Canales faced that inevitable question following his team’s 23-22 win over the New Orleans Saints, where Young came through with his second straight positive performance. But, as expected, we’re still a little ways away from learning the answer.

“Not yet,” Canales replied when asked if he’s ready to name Young as the Week 10 starter. “We’ll take in all the information, watch the film, we gotta process. We gotta make sure we look at all this stuff, and we’ll let you guys know in the next couple days.”

Young—who completed 16 of his 26 throws for 171 yards, a score and an interception—orchestrated the first game-winning touchdown drive of his career this afternoon. He led the Panthers on a four-play, 64-yard possession, one that ended in a 16-yard visit to the end zone by running back Chuba Hubbard, to give them a 23-22 lead at the 2:18 mark of the fourth quarter.

Over the past two weeks, Young has connected on 63.5 percent of his passes for 395 yards, three touchdowns and three picks.

Bryce Young throwing an interception on a perfect pass is a tragic symbol of his Panthers career

Bryce Young genuinely has the worst luck.

Over the past few weeks, after a tough start to the season, Bryce Young has had a chance to re-solidify himself as the Carolina Panthers starting quarterback of the future. His teammates, unfortunately, do not seem all that interested in helping the quarterback when he puts them in a position to succeed.

With the Panthers battling the rival New Orleans Saints in a tight division game, Young uncorked an absolutely beautiful pass to rookie playmaker Xavier Legette downfield. It should’ve been a big-time completion for the Panthers created by the person who may well still save their franchise.

Instead, Saints cornerback Shemar Jean-Charles made a terrific play to rip the ball out of Legette’s arms. This, naturally, somehow counts as an interception for Young.

What a cruel twist and a perfect symbol for how the Panthers have failed Young in his early career so far:

At the very least, Young helped Carolina capture a surprising 23-22 win over the Saints. You just wish he wouldn’t have the worst luck on actual remarkable plays he makes.

Panthers got the biggest play of their season vs. Saints

Ja’Tavion Sanders’ 46-yard reception was the Panthers’ first 40-yard play of the season, but it’s right on brand for the Saints defense:

Entering Week 9, the New Orleans Saints have allowed the most 40-yard plays in the NFL. The Carolina Panthers hadn’t registered a gain of 40 yards all season. That changed in the third quarter.

Tight end Ja’Tavion Sanders took a short pass and rumbled forward for a 46-yard catch. This is the longest play of the season by the Panthers offense. After catching the pass, Sanders attempted to hurdle over Tyrann Mathieu. Mathieu stopped the hurdle, but didn’t bring Sanders down.

It was an athletic play you don’t normally see. Sanders came down and kept moving as if his momentum wasn’t stalled.

This is a representation of who the Saints have become. The defense isn’t good anymore, and there’s not a side of the ball you feel you can lean on anymore. Bryce Young looked more comfortable than ever and that explosive play is proof.

Titans should trade for Bryce Young according to former GM

Former general manager Rick Spielman believes the Tennessee Titans should acquire quarterback Bryce Young before the trade deadline.

The NFL trade deadline is on Tuesday and many believe that the Tennessee Titans will be front and center in the festivities that day. That wouldn’t surprise anyone, and after trading DeAndre Hopkins and Ernest Jones during Week 8, many expected the fire sale to continue in Week 9.

One former NFL general manager believes the Titans will be busy and the players involved might surprise. CBS Sports reporter Shanna McCarrison states in her piece that Rick Spielman proposed six trades that should happen before the deadline.

The Titans show up twice in the article with the first trade proposal impacting the defensive line. In his opinion, the San Francisco 49ers would trade for defensive tackle Sebastian Joseph-Day.

With Javon Hargrave out with a bicep injury and the 49ers struggling against the run, the team could use a defensive tackle to help cover the loss. Spielman would try to trade for Titans defensive tackle Sebastian Joseph-Day, who would fit San Francisco’s scheme.

Joseph-Day has been solid for the Titans in 2024 with 19 total tackles and two sacks, and while he would be missed, he may not be in the long-term plans of the franchise. With general manager Ran Carthons’ familiarity with the 49ers, this potential trade proposal makes some sense.

However, the next time the Titans show up in this piece is a bit more of a head scratcher. Spielman makes the case that the Titans should trade for Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young.

If Young is put in the right situation, he may be able to thrive more than he has with the Carolina Panthers. The Titans need to estimate where they expect to fall in this year’s draft, along with what quarterbacks could be available when they’re on the clock, to determine if selecting a signal-caller would be better than trading for one.

That take is interesting and does have some merit in theory, but the biggest problem is Young as the target. It’s no secret that Young has not lived up to the hype in Carolina, but with neither Will Levis nor Mason Rudolph finding success, would the results be any better? Probably not.

Spielman stated he wouldn’t break the bank, offering up no more than a fourth round selection, but that is still a bit rich for an unproven player who has struggled since entering the league.

While there has been quiet recently, deals can and will be made in the coming days and likely will be. What do you think? Let us know in the comments what trades you would like to see.
