5 Rams to watch in preseason opener vs. Chargers

The Rams kick off their preseason schedule on Saturday vs. the Chargers and these are five players fans should have their eyes on.

It’s officially the first week of the NFL preseason as every team in the league will have an exhibition game this week. The Los Angeles Rams will kick off their preseason schedule versus the Los Angeles Chargers, the team they share SoFi Stadium with.

This will be the first time the Rams will take the field since defeating the Cincinnati Bengals in the Super Bowl back in February. That being said, Sean McVay has avoided having starters play in the preseason, so backups and other players will have opportunities to showcase their talent.

Ahead of Saturday’s preseason contest against the Chargers, here are five players to watch on the Rams.

Coveted OL prospect names UF among top 4, sets commitment date

The Gators will be hard to beat for three-star offensive tackle Bryce Lovett who will make his commitment on May 16.

Three-star offensive lineman [autotag]Bryce Lovett[/autotag] has been to Florida a handful of times since head coach [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag] has taken over the program. Because of the sheer amount of times he has visited the Swamp, the Gators should be tough to beat for Lovett who dropped a list of his four schools while setting a commitment date. Florida made his list along with Iowa State, Missouri and Louisville. He plans to make his commitment known on May 16, his 17th birthday.

He said he likes Florida because of all the coaches they have dedicated to the offensive line unit.

“It’s the relationship I have with the new coaching staff and what they are trying to do,” Lovett said when asked what he likes about the Gators, according to 247Sports. “And then they got like five o-line coaches. They are so dedicated to the offensive line, it’s crazy.”

The 247Sports composite rankings have the Rockledge, Florida, native as the 715th overall prospect and as the 61st best offensive tackle.

Lovett will be a solid addition to the class as long as the Gators, Napier and offensive line coaches [autotag]Rob Sale[/autotag] and [autotag]Darnell Stapleton[/autotag] sign some of four- and five-star offensive linemen this cycle. The unit needs an overhaul after the previous regime struggled to recruit the position.

Bryce Perkins was one of NFL’s fastest players in preseason Week 3, topping 20 mph twice

Bryce Perkins was one of the fastest ball carriers in the NFL last week, topping 20 mph twice against Denver.

The Rams didn’t plan to keep three quarterbacks when camp and the preseason began. They expected to only carry Matthew Stafford and John Wolford on the 53-man roster.

Bryce Perkins changed their mind with some really impressive play in the team’s three preseason games. Not only did he show poise and accuracy throwing the ball, but he turned on the jets a few times and picked up yards with his legs.

Next Gen Stats tracks the speeds of ball carriers and in the third week of the preseason, Perkins was one of the fastest. He had two of the three fastest speeds of any player that week, behind only Tyreek Hill. Not bad company to keep.

Perkins’ athleticism and mobility are certainly his best asset and could potentially be something the Rams use if he sticks around on the 53-man roster, but even if he doesn’t suit up for a game this year, keeping him on the team as a developmental quarterback is critical.

If he can keep growing as a passer, Perkins could have a future in the NFL as a real dual-threat quarterback.

Rams’ decision to keep Bryce Perkins as QB3 is a wise one

The Rams are going deeper at quarterback this year, opting to keep Bryce Perkins behind Matthew Stafford and John Wolford.

The Rams were faced with a lot of tough calls as they trimmed their roster down from 80 players to only 53, but perhaps there was none bigger than the one at quarterback. No, it had nothing to do with Matthew Stafford or John Wolford, but rather Bryce Perkins, who was No. 3 on the depth chart.

He’ll be staying put in that spot, too.

The Rams decided to keep Perkins on the initial 53-man roster instead of waiving him Tuesday, penciling him in as the No. 3 quarterback behind Stafford and Wolford. It’s an indication of how highly the Rams view Perkins, who impressed in the preseason with 451 yards passing and three touchdowns, as well as 114 yards rushing. He started and played the entirety of the last two games against the Raiders and Broncos, helping carry the second- and third-team offense.

Perkins making the initial 53-man roster doesn’t mean he’ll be active on game days, but it’s a massive step in the right direction for the second-year quarterback. Teams typically only keep two quarterbacks on the roster, so for someone like the Rams to keep a third behind Stafford and Wolford is noteworthy.

Perkins has made great progress since joining the Rams as an undrafted free agent last year, and it really showed in the preseason this summer. He didn’t make any critical errors, was going through his progressions and made highlight-reel plays with his legs – like this hurdle over a defender in Week 1.

In an ideal world, the Rams probably would’ve liked to keep Perkins on the practice squad. But knowing another team might claim him off waivers, they decided against taking that risk and kept him on the 53.

He’ll now get even more time to learn Sean McVay’s system in Los Angeles, rather than having to potentially start over with another team if he was waived and claimed by someone else. McVay likes his skillset a lot and not just because he’s mobile, coming away impressed with the way he works through his options before taking off.

Having a quarterback capable of operating the Rams’ offense is valuable, especially in another season where COVID-19 can knock out a position group for a given game. If Stafford were to test positive and miss a game, the Rams would be much better off with Wolford and Perkins at quarterback rather than a free agent off the street backing Wolford up.

It’s partly a matter of being safe than sorry, but it’s even more about Perkins proving his value this preseason, his first game action since his college days in 2019. The Rams were wise to keep him on the 53-man roster, at least initially.

Sean McVay: Bryce Perkins is making it ‘a very difficult decision’ to keep 2 or 3 QBs

Bryce Perkins’ play has made the Rams’ decision to keep two or three quarterbacks a tough one.

Sean McVay and the Rams typically only keep two quarterbacks on the 53-man roster. They carried Jared Goff and John Wolford last year, and it would seem they’d likely only keep Matthew Stafford and Wolford this season.

But Bryce Perkins is making them seriously consider keeping three quarterbacks on the roster. That’s because he’s played well in the preseason, doing everything he can to keep the ball moving on offense despite playing with the Rams’ second- and third-string players.

With another strong performance on Saturday night, Perkins further helped his stock with 201 yards passing and 50 yards rushing, completing 23 of his 42 passes against Denver. McVay said after the game that Perkins is making it a tough call as the Rams weigh how many quarterbacks to keep on the active roster.

“It has not been made yet and to Bryce’s credit, he’s definitely making a very difficult decision because you know you’ve got Matthew, you’ve got John,” he said. “Feel excellent about those guys, but I think Bryce can be really proud of the body of work he put on tape throughout the three weeks of the preseason. He’s continued to grow. I think it’s a real credit to Kevin O’Connell and Zac Robinson. He’s a resilient competitor. You can see it, and I thought it was on display again tonight. … Definitely going to make it a tough decision for us.”

Perkins spent last year on the practice squad after signing with the Rams as an undrafted free agent out of Virginia. He’s developed into an even better passer than he was in college, which is what makes him someone the Rams might keep on the 53-man roster.

They’d love to add him to the practice squad, but that can only happen if he clears waivers and isn’t claimed by another team. In that case, he would land on their active roster, preventing the Rams from keeping him on the practice squad.

It’s possible he’ll clear waivers, but with so many teams around the league looking to carry three quarterbacks due to COVID-19, there’s a chance someone will claim him from the Rams.

Bryce Perkins’ valiant performance vs. Raiders gives Rams plenty to think about

Can the Rams really afford to cut Bryce Perkins after the potential he showed against the Raiders?

Just about anyone who watched the Rams’ loss to the Raiders came away thinking one thing: Bryce Perkins can play. The second-year quarterback out of Virginia showed a ton of poise, potential and playmaking ability on Saturday night, his first extensive action in the NFL.

He played the entire game for the Rams after taking just 22 snaps last week against the Chargers, which was a show of confidence from the coaching staff. Sean McVay even said after the game that the original plan wasn’t for Perkins to get every snap. It was the quarterback’s play that influenced McVay’s decision, letting him build a rhythm with the backup offense.

“Just based on the flow of the game, there was just some different opportunities,” McVay said. “You want him to respond back from the interception. He kind of got some good momentum, you wanted him to start the second half. So that wasn’t necessarily the plan, we just kind of had a feel for it during the course of the game, wanting to give him that opportunity and we’ll see what that looks like for next week.”

It’s a good thing the Rams kept Perkins in there because not only did he earn the extended playing time, but he nearly led the Rams to a comeback win in the fourth quarter. He completed 26 of 39 passes for 208 yards and two touchdowns, with his only glaring mistake being a deep pass into triple coverage intended for Tutu Atwell.

He added 41 yards rushing on nine carries, the best of which was a heroic scramble on fourth down to pick up the first and keep the Rams’ final drive alive.

Two plays later, Perkins hit Jacob Harris for a touchdown to make it 17-16, but the Rams weren’t going to play for the tie. McVay wanted to go for two, and Kevin O’Connell once again dialed up the Perkins-Harris connection for the third time on the drive.

Perkins’ pass fell incomplete, though, unable to hook up with Harris for a game-winning two-point conversion.

But despite the result, Perkins’ performance gives the Rams a lot to think about. With the way he’s played in the preseason, it might be hard to cut him – not because the Rams need a third-string quarterback on the 53-man roster, but because there’s a decent chance they’ll lose him on the waiver wire.

McVay talked about his performance against the Raiders after the game, coming away impressed with the way the former Virginia Cavalier played.

“It’s exciting,” the coach said. “I thought he did a really good job, too, of being able to create off-schedule, but also on-schedule. You look at the touchdown pass earlier in the game to Kendall Blanton, being able to work through a progression. So I thought you saw a lot of really good things from him. A lot of opportunities to evaluate a lot of things for him to be able to learn from, but I was really pleased with just his poise, his command and composure throughout the course of the game tonight.”

Sneaking Perkins onto the practice squad would be ideal, giving him another year to learn from McVay, O’Connell, Matthew Stafford and John Wolford. But if he’s cut and claimed off waivers, the Rams will lose him without the chance to sign him to the practice squad.

He’s not going to overtake Wolford for the backup job, but he’s clearly cemented his place as QB3 ahead of Duck Hodges, who didn’t take the field for a single snap against the Raiders. And while it’s fantastic to see Perkins play so well, this exposure might cost the Rams the chance to add him to the practice squad when final cuts are made.

So do they keep three quarterbacks out of fear of another team claiming Perkins? Or do they take that risk and hope he slips through the cracks for the chance to keep another player at a position that needs depth more than quarterback does?

McVay has plenty to consider in this situation now, and it’ll be fascinating to see how the quarterback situation plays out against the Broncos in the preseason finale next week.

Bryce Perkins deserves longer look vs. Raiders after impressing in preseason opener

Bryce Perkins only played 22 snaps against the Chargers, but he deserves a longer look in the second preseason game.

There weren’t many bright spots on offense in the Rams’ preseason opener against the Chargers, which isn’t hard to see considering they only scored six points in the loss. But it wasn’t completely due to poor quarterback play. Bryce Perkins was a standout for the Rams, even if he only threw for 42 yards and a touchdown.

It was the way he played and the comfort he showed on the field and in the huddle that was particularly impressive. He rushed four times for 23 yards, but one of those “rush attempts” was a kneeldown for minus-2 yards. So really, he carried it three times for 25 yards, with two of those rushes picking up the first down on third.

There was no better play in the entire game than the one he made late, stiff-arming one defender and hurdling another to pick up 12 yards on third-and-9.

He only played 22 snaps compared to Devlin Hodges 34, but it’s Perkins who deserves a longer look in the second preseason game against the Raiders. Sean McVay should let him showcase his skills a little bit more, allowing him to get even more comfortable and in a rhythm on offense, considering Saturday night was his first-ever game in the NFL after the preseason was canceled last year.

McVay liked what he saw against the Chargers, so why not give him even more reps in the second preseason matchup.

“I thought he did a nice job. I was real pleased with him,” McVay said after the game. “You could see he had a couple of great off-schedule plays tonight. That third down-and-9, that’s definitely on SportsCenter tonight. It was exciting to be able to see. I thought the overall operation, getting in and out of the huddle, communicating some of the play call, sending the motions, mixing up your cadence. It’s definitely a good positive night for Bryce. The standards he has, I think he’s always going to want to be perfect snap in and snap out, but there was positives to take away from both he and Duck.”

Perkins has an outside shot to make the Rams’ 53-man roster this season, but that’s only if they keep three quarterbacks; Matthew Stafford and John Wolford are locked in as the No. 1 and 2. If Perkins waived, the Rams will undoubtedly want to keep him on the practice squad for a second straight season.

The only concern with that is the possibility of a team claiming him off waivers and signing him to their 53-man roster. Perhaps that’s why McVay won’t want to expose Perkins too much during the preseason, for fear of him catching another team’s eye before final cuts are made.

But the stage wasn’t too big for Perkins, who was playing his first game since he was in college in 2019.

“Last year, I really tried to do my best of just staying prepared with the game plans, being comfortable, not getting complacent and just sitting back and accepting the role,” Perkins said after Saturday’s game. “I think watching John Wolford, how he prepared as the backup role was great. And leading up to here, I just wanted to come out here and show some of my capabilities. It’s always different when it’s live and people have to tackle and everything like that. But I just take it one play at a time. This is great. I’m not going to get too caught up on one play or one drive because there’s more games to be played. And we just got to keep moving forward. But it was definitely fun getting out there tonight, making plays. And I’m looking forward to the next game.”

The Rams host the Raiders on Saturday night at 7 p.m. PT again in the second week of the preseason and will have two joint practices on Wednesday and Thursday leading up to that game. Wolford isn’t playing in the preseason, nor is Wolford, so this is a golden opportunity for Perkins to prove himself once again.

Watch: Rams QB Bryce Perkins stiff-arms defender, hurdles another on slick run

Bryce Perkins made this spectacular run look easy, stiff-arming one Charger and hurdling another.

How many NFL quarterbacks do you see hurdling defenders? Probably not many, but Bryce Perkins just pulled it off to perfection on Saturday night against the Chargers. After avoiding pressure and stepping up into the pocket, Perkins took off in an attempt to pick up the first down.

And boy, did he ever.

He stiff-armed one defender and then proceeded to hurdle another, converting on third-and-9 in spectacular fashion. There aren’t many quarterbacks who could pull this off, but Perkins made it look easy.

Perkins may not make the 53-man roster, but he’s making a strong case to land on the practice squad again. He’s had a good night against the Chargers, both with his legs and through the air.

Rams elevate QB Bryce Perkins, make 2 other roster moves

The Rams made three practice squad moves on Friday ahead of the divisional round against the Packers.

[jwplayer LQX8G8IH-ThvAeFxT]

The Rams made a few roster moves on Friday ahead of tomorrow’s game against the Green Bay Packers, shuffling their practice squad. They announced they have elevated cornerback Donte Deayon and quarterback Bryce Perkins from the practice squad to the active roster for Saturday, also signing long snapper Colin Holba to the practice squad, as well.

Deayon and Perkins will merely be emergency options against the Packers, while potentially contributing on special teams. The Rams are deep at cornerback with Jalen Ramsey, Darious Williams, Troy Hill and David Long Jr., so Deayon isn’t expected to contribute on defense.

At quarterback, Jared Goff will get the start and Blake Bortles will be the backup. John Wolford remains sidelined by a neck injury, so Perkins will be the third quarterback – if he’s indeed active on Saturday.

Rams add QB Bryce Perkins to active roster for Week 17

Bryce Perkins gives the Rams three quarterbacks for Sunday’s finale against the Cardinals.

The Los Angeles Rams will have three quarterbacks available against the Cardinals on Sunday. In addition to John Wolford and Blake Bortles, Bryce Perkins will also be on the active roster for the season finale.

The Rams promoted him from the practice squad as a COVID-19 replacement Saturday. This does not mean he’s on the 53-man roster beyond this week, however. It’s merely a temporary elevation thanks to new league rules amid the pandemic.

Perkins was signed as an undrafted free agent out of Virginia this year and has remained on the practice squad all year. He’s a true dual-threat quarterback, possessing the ability to pick up big yards on the ground.

It’s unclear if Bortles or Perkins will back up Wolford on Sunday with Jared Goff out.
