Tennessee draft prospects for Packers fans to watch during College Football Playoff

Draft prospects from Tennessee for Packers fans to watch during the College Football Playoff.

The Green Bay Packers could turn to the Tennessee Volunteers for defensive line help during the 2025 NFL Draft. Brian Gutekunst could turn to the Volunteers if the Packers look to add another playmaker for Matt LaFleur and Jordan Love. The Volunteers will square off against Ohio State on Saturday night in the opening round of the College Football Playoff.

Omari Thomas, DT

Thomas has the gap quickness to affect the action in the backfield. The former four-star recruit is stout at the point of attack and can peel off blocks to stop ball carriers in the hole.

The Packers could be looking for TJ Slaton’s replacement this offseason, and Thomas could be a Day 3 target.

Cooper Mays, C

Mays enters the playoff matchup against the Buckeyes with 44 career starts at center. Over the past two seasons, Mays has given up zero sacks and 20 pressures as the anchor of Tennesse’s offensive line.

Bru McCoy, WR

When the 2025 season starts, Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs will both be playing in the final year of their rookie contracts. Gutekunst has likely started to think about which wide receivers he’ll prioritize to re-sign and who he’ll let walk from this talented group that includes Jayden Reed and Dontayvion Wicks.

McCoy is a player that Gutekunst could target on Day 3 to add to a talented room. McCoy checks all the boxes for what the Packers look for in a wide receiver. At 6-2, 218 pounds, he’s a physical, big-framed target who takes pride in doing the dirty work when he doesn’t have the ball.

Dont’e Thornton Jr, WR

Thornton is an explosive, vertical threat. A former track athlete, Thornton has a different gear and he uses his long strides to quickly chew up grass. He enters the matchup with Ohio State as the nation’s leader in yards per reception (25.9).

James Pearce Jr, Edge

At 245 pounds, Pierce may be too light for Gutekunst’s liking. It’s also very likely that Pearce is off the board by the time the Packers are on the clock in the first round on April 24th.

Having said all that, Pierce would provide Green Bay’s pass rush with instant juice. The Tennessee pass rusher has an explosive first step and is bendy. He enters Saturday’s matchup against Ohio State with 52 pressures and 7.5 sacks.

Dylan Sampson (running back) is a home run hitter for the Volunteers. After signing Josh Jacobs in free agency and drafting MarShawn Lloyd on Day 2 last offseason, it’s difficult to envision the Packers selecting Sampson on Day 2 of the 2025 draft.

Bru McCoy named semifinalist for 2024 Comeback Player of the Year Award

Tennessee wide receiver Bru McCoy named as a semifinalist for 2024 Comeback Player of the Year Award.

Tennessee wide receiver Bru McCoy has been named a semifinalist for the 2024 Comeback Player of the Year Award.

He is one of 12 semifinalists for the honor announced by the College Sports Communicators, along with the Associated Press and the Fiesta Bowl Organization.

McCoy, a redshirt senior for the Vols and a transfer from USC, is one of two semifinalists from the SEC. He returned for a sixth season of college football in 2024.

McCoy suffered a season-ending injury during a game against South Carolina on Sept. 23, 2023, dislocating and fracturing his right ankle.

After going through a recovery process, he returned this season and is Tennessee’s leading receiver. Through 12 games in the regular-season, he has totaled a team-leading 35 receptions. McCoy has recorded 432 receiving yards, which is second on the team.

Off the field, McCoy teamed with Julie Walker of the Peyton Walker Foundation to create Huddle for Hearts, an initiative that works to provide Automated External Defibrillators to youth sports organizations, focusing primarily on underserved communities.

His work with the program creates awareness for sudden cardiac arrest and treatment.

Bru McCoy named semifinalist for Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year

Tennessee wide receiver Bru McCoy named a semifinalist for the 2024 Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year.

Redshirt senior Bru McCoy has appeared in all seven games for Tennessee during the 2024 football regular-season.

The 6-foot-3, 230-pound wide receiver has recorded 20 receptions for 289 yards, while also totaling 15 rushing yards on two attempts.

Following Week 8, McCoy was named one of 20 semifinalists for the 2024 Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year. The Witten Award honors the type of exemplary character and commitment to community, family and teammates.

McCoy returned to the field in 2024 after suffering a season-ending fracture-dislocation of his right ankle versus South Carolina on Sept. 30, 2023.

McCoy is the fourth Tennessee football player to be named a semifinalist during the award’s eight-year history (Trey Smith 2019, Hendon Hooker 2022 and Joe Milton III 2023).

Witten played tight end for Tennessee from 2000-02, while also playing 17 seasons in the National Football League for Dallas and the Raiders.

Fomer USC receiver Bru McCoy is part of an NCAA eligibility drama

Bru McCoy waits to see what his fate will be.

Tennessee Volunteers wide receiver Bru McCoy, who once played for USC, could be granted an additional season of elibility by the NCAA.

The US Department of Justice ruled the NCAA couldn’t enforce their transfer eligbility rules that forced an athlete to sit out for a season before beginning their career with a new program.

McCoy was projected to enter the 2024 NFL draft efore suffering a lower leg injury against the South Carolina Gamecocks on September 30.

Now he’ll be one of the top targets for quarterback Nico Iamaleava, who earned the Citrus Bowl MVP in his first start in the Vols’ 35-0 win over Iowa.

McCoy committed to USC in January 2019 as a five-star prospect, flipped to Texas 20 days later on signing day, enrolled with the Longhorns for spring practice and then transferred to USC in June of that very same year.

The former Trojan former five-star prospect was Tennesee’s most physical receiver when he was healthy. The 6-foot-3, 220-pounder is a sure-handed wideout, a hard runner, bruising blocker and team leader.

McCoy had 17 catches for 217 yards and one touchdown this season for the Vols. In 2022, he had 52 receptions for 667 yards and four TDs.

Vols have three top 75 draft eligible wide receivers in 2024

Three 2024 Tennessee football players are ranked as top 75 draft eligible wide receivers.

Southeastern Conference media days will take place July 15-18 at Omni Dallas Hotel in Dallas, Texas.

Fourth-year Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel will meet with media on July 16.

Ahead of the 2024 college football season, “Phil Steele’s College Football Preview” was released. Phil Steele ranked the top 75 draft eligible wide receivers (seniors, juniors and redshirt sophomores).

Three Tennessee wide receivers were ranked in the top 75: Bru McCoy (No. 10), Squirrel White (No. 24) and Dont’e Thornton Jr. (No. 54).

McCoy suffered a season-ending fracture-dislocation of his right ankle in the second quarter versus South Carolina on Sept. 30, 2023. He appeared in five games for the Vols last season, recording 17 receptions, 217 receiving yards and one receiving touchdown.

White recorded 67 receptions for 803 yards and two touchdowns in 13 games for the Vols in 2023.

In his first season at Tennessee after transferring from Oregon, Thornton Jr. totaled 13 receptions, 224 yards and one touchdown.

Saturday Down South picks five most important returning SEC players

Quinn Ewers is one of Saturday Down South’s five most important returning SEC players.

Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers is back for another season in Austin. Saturday Down South views his decision as one of the five most important returns in the SEC.

Ewers was a terrific player in 2023. Over the season, Ewers was No. 9 in the Power Five in passing yards (3,462) and No. 8 in completion percentage (68.5). He added 28 touchdown passes to only six interceptions on the season.

The third-year quarterback is expected to take another step forward in 2024. Though he’ll be throwing to different receivers, there will not be much of a talent drop-off, if any. Ewers’ top targets will likely be Alabama transfer wide receiver Isaiah Bond, five-star receiver Johntay Cook and Houston receiver transfer Matthew Golden.

Here’s a look at Saturday Down South’s five most important returning players in the SEC.

Former USC receiver Bru McCoy will have a sixth season in college, stays at Tennessee

Bru McCoy will play college football for one more year.

Former USC wide receiver Bru McCoy, now at Tennessee, will return for the 2024 season rather than enter the NFL draft, he announced Tuesday on Instagram.

“Can’t wait Run it back next year, thank you Vol Nation for all the love and Support,” McCoy wrote. “I love this team, staff, and University & look forward to giving my all, one more time!”

Vols Wire had more on the story.

Before Tennessee played in the Citrus Bowl against Iowa, McCoy called Josh Heupel and Kelsey Pope to tell the Vols the good news.

“They were excited and just as excited as I am,” McCoy said. “I think more than anything we are just glad we get the opportunity to do something because we all see that there is something special we could do in the next year. This next year, even this year I thought we had a chance to win the SEC and make a run at it. I think this next year we have and even better chance. There is just excitement because everyone wants to go live that dream out.”

McCoy was expected to enter the 2024 NFL draft, but that came into question after he suffered a season-ending ankle injury against South Carolina on Sept. 30.

McCoy, a USC transfer and former five-star prospect, was the Vols’ go-to receiver in the middle third of the field.

The 6-foot-3, 220-pound receiver had 17 catches for 217 yards and one touchdown this season for the Vols. In 2022, he had 52 receptions for 667 yards and four TDs.
