Browns have four players exit Commanders’ game

Cleveland Browns starters Denzel Ward and Charlie Hughlett are ruled out against the Washington Commanders. Defensive starters Grant Delpit and Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah are questionable to return.

Cleveland Browns lost a rash of starters during the third quarter against the Washington Commanders. Two two longtime starters were ruled out. Franchise cornerback Denzel Ward exited the game with a hamstring injury.  The Browns also lost their longest tenured player, long snapper, Charlie Hughlett with a rib injury.

Defensive stars Grant Delpit and Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah walked to the locker room with medical trainers during the third quarter. They are questionable to return. The Browns have struggled to stay healthy during the start of the season.

Denzel Ward had a rough game against the Commanders. Ward was beat one time on a deep ball after Ward failed to gauge the ball’s distance and tried undercutting the long pass. Ward wasn’t aware of how good Jayden Daniels is. Daniels tested Ward during the second quarter and Ward almost intercepted the pass. A Commanders’ receiver broke up the pass at the catch point.

Hughlett has battled injuries all season. The Browns brought in long snapper Rex Sunahara during the preseason to give Hughlett time to recover. The Browns might bring back the local standout if Hughlett doesn’t recover.

Browns S Rodney McLeod exits, returns Commanders game with a cut face

Cleveland Browns starting safety Rodney McLeod Jr. left the game against the Washington Commanders with a face laceration

Cleveland Browns starting safety Rodney McLeod Jr. left the game against the Washington Commanders with a face laceration. He is questionable to return. Ronnie Hickman has stepped in as the deep safety to face the Commander’s prolific passing attack.

The Browns are vulnerable at deep safety. Starting free safety Juan Thornhill suffered a calf injury after the first game, and was placed on injured reserve during Week 2 of the season. He is able to return after next week.

McLeod and Hickman have stepped in for Thornhill, but they’re having a limited impact. McLeod is a 13-year veteran and his experience helps the Browns pre-snap, but he no longer has the athleticism to patrol the deep middle of the field. Hickman is inexperienced and is constantly caught between assignments.

The Browns need McLeod’s experience to help limit the Commanders’ explosive passing attack.

He came back into the game afterward being treated on the sideline.

Another DE exits with an injury

Cleveland Browns defensive end Ogbo Okoronkwo exited the game against the Washington Commanders and is being evaluated for a concussion.

Cleveland Browns defensive end Ogbo Okoronkwo exited the game against the Washington Commanders. Okoronkwo was seen walking to the locker rooms with trainers during the two-minute warning. Okoronkwo is being evaluated for a concussion.

The Browns are thin at the defensive end position. Reigning defensive player of the year, Myles Garrett is battling lower leg injuries. They lost third-year defensive end Alex Wright for the season earlier this week.  Okoronkwo is the Browns’ designated pass rusher, but he’s getting more and more playing time after the rash of injuries.

Okoronkwo is a very good pass rusher, but he struggles to sustain his gap in the run game. The Browns need the veteran defensive end healthy as they near the end of their bench. The Browns’ defense has been pitiful this season due to their inability to win in the trenches.  The Browns must create a better pass rush for their defense to improve. They need Okoronkwo for that.

Twitter reacts to the loss vs. Commanders in preseason home game

The Browns fall to 1-1 for the preseason with two games to go

The Cleveland Browns played the only preseason game of the year in Northeast Ohio as they fell to the Washington Commanders by a score of 17-15. The team played most of their key starters as Deshaun Watson took the field for the first time this year. He led one drive that moved down the field before stalling on 4th and goal but they showed plenty of promise.

The defensive line without Myles Garrett also made their presence felt including Za’Darius Smith forcing a holding call in the endzone resulting in a safety. Here’s a look at how fans reacted on Twitter to the second preseason game of the year.

WATCH: Browns Ronnie Hickman Jr. snags second interception vs. Commanders

A second scoring chance eliminated by the rookie safety

The undrafted free agent is having quite the home debut as former Ohio State safety Ronnie Hickman Jr. has his second interception of the night for the Cleveland Browns against the Washington Commanders. Just like his first interception to end the first half the second one was also in the red zone ending another scoring chance for Washington.

Hickman continues to boost his chances to grab a roster spot after a really impressive second interception. He out-physically the offensive player snatching the ball out of the air and wrestling it away and making sure to secure the interception to shut the door on a chance for points.

WATCH: Ronnie Hickman ends Commanders’ scoring chances with interception

The undrafted free agent keeps the score 14-2 at halftime

After the offense stalled out with a Josh Dobbs interception, the defense of the Cleveland Browns stood tall to prevent another score from the Washington Commanders. The defensive line got a good push against the Commanders causing quarterback Jacoby Brissett to throw a bad deep ball that was intercepted by former Ohio State safety Ronnie Hickman.

Hickman is one of the players battling for the fourth safety spot in camp and the preseason and tracked the ball well in the air to come down with the interception. The offense hasn’t provided much since the starters went down but some of these young defenders have helped their case to make the final roster.

Deshaun Watson will start Friday vs. Commanders

The quarterback will see his first game action of the preseason

In the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game last week, the Cleveland Browns didn’t play any of their major starters. Things will be different this week. During his media availability on Wednesday, starting quarterback Deshaun Watson said he will start in the preseason game against the Commanders on Friday night.

He didn’t indicate how long he will play, but you have to imagine it would only be for a couple of series at most. It has been talked about since last season that blocking for a mobile quarterback like Watson is much different from blocking for Jacoby Brissett and Baker Mayfield. The team needs these reps to get used to the new offense in time for Week 1.
