Browns, Chiefs have huge viewership in Week 1

Browns, Chiefs was a great game with high expectations. A lot of people agreed and tuned in according to information released by CBS:

The Cleveland Browns and Kansas City Chiefs matchup in Week 1 was bound to be a good one. The Chiefs were coming off back to back Super Bowl appearances, with one win, while the Browns were coming off their first playoff appearance in a long-time and were seen as real challengers to Kansas City.

The game itself proved to be everything that was expected. It was a closely contested battle in the fourth quarter between two very good teams. While Cleveland came up short in the end, they proved that they belonged on the field. The Chiefs showed just how hard it is to beat them.

On Tuesday came word that the expectations for the game, and the game flow itself, helped the viewership for CBS:

Not only did the game have expectations but both fan bases are passionate about their teams. Browns fans have been engaging in putrid affairs from their team for decades and are not about to miss the quality product put on the field. Fans of Kansas City know how exciting the offense is and wanted to see how their new offensive line came together.

The result wasn’t what Cleveland wanted but the team is hoping to have another crack at the Chiefs in the playoffs. Based on the ratings in Week 1, television networks would love that as well.

Browns vs. Chiefs game recap: Everything we know

Despite a defeat, we learned a lot about the Browns in Week 1:

The Cleveland Browns faced off with the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 1 in a game that had many excited going into it. The game didn’t disappoint the general NFL fan but led to much disappointment for fans of the visiting team.

The Browns fell to the Chiefs 33 – 29 despite holding the lead for the majority of the game. Unfortunately, timely plays by the defending AFC champions and poor plays by the hopeful Browns kept, at least, two streaks alive: Kansas City has won their last nine openers while Cleveland hasn’t won in Week 1 since 2004.

It isn’t all doom and gloom for the Browns but the loss will be hard to take given how the game action went. With leads of 8 – 0, 15 – 3 and 22 – 10, the brown and orange held a commanding lead into the middle of the third quarter. They bumped the lead back up to nine points (29 – 20) early in the 4th but that was all for their scoring.

Here is what we know coming out of the game for the Browns.

5 reasons the Browns will beat the Chiefs in Week 1

The Browns can win in Week 1 versus the Chiefs. Here are five reasons they will win:

The Cleveland Browns face-off with the Kansas City Chiefs on the road in Week 1 of the NFL season. In what is expected to be the best game of the day, Cleveland is a 5.5 point underdog to the reigning AFC champions.

Following an exciting game in the divisional round of the NFL playoffs in 2020, both teams have made adjustments to their rosters to try to win a Super Bowl in 2021. The Browns added a ton of new defenders while maintaining continuity on offense while the Chiefs revamped their entire offensive line in one offseason following a brutal loss in the Super Bowl.

While Cleveland is the underdog in Week 1, many believe they will be fighting with Kansas City, along with the Buffalo Bills, for the AFC title this season. While Week 1 isn’t a must-win, especially in a 17 game regular season, it still could play a big role in tiebreakers at the end of the season and a win would set the teams off on the right foot.

Browns Week 1 uniforms point to playoff revenge goal

While it might be coincidental, especially since the home team gets to pick their jersey first, the Browns could have revenge on their minds with their uniform choice for Week 1:

The Cleveland Browns have had their eye on their matchup with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2021 since falling to them in the divisional round of the 2020 NFL playoffs. Coincidentally, the Browns get their chance at revenge in Week 1 at the very same spot that ended their previous season.

To a man, Cleveland has talked about turning the page from last season. From head coach Kevin Stefanski to quarterback Baker Mayfield, the clear focus has been about moving forward.

That doesn’t mean that the team doesn’t have revenge on their mind given the positioning of this game on their schedule. As their opening game of the season, the Browns have been able to put extra time and effort into preparing for a team that knocked them out last year.

In, perhaps, a sign of having a revenge goal, Cleveland will don the very same uniform combination that they wore against the Chiefs in the playoffs last year:

This video will show the Browns in those very same uniforms for that playoff game and, at the same time, one of the biggest reasons the team is seeking revenge:

With temperatures expected to be quite high on Sunday, white jerseys are a good choice. The Chiefs are expected to wear the same uniform combination, red jersey with white pants, that they wore in last year’s playoff game as well.

Browns Vs Chiefs: Final Injury Report

Browns Vs Chiefs final injury report has two Browns listed as out, quite a few questionable while the Chiefs have one key player listed as questionable and one player listed as out:

As the Cleveland Browns and Kansas City Chiefs look to kickoff what both teams hope will be a Super Bowl season, injuries can always play a huge role in the results of a season. Last year, an injury to Patrick Mahomes gave the Browns a great chance to upset the Chiefs in the divisional round of the NFL playoffs. For Kansas City, injuries to their offensive line, seemingly, cost them in their loss to Tampa Bay in the Super Bowl.

Entering the 2021 season, Cleveland made it a goal for the team to make it to Week 1 as healthy as possible. While they will be without a few players expected to make their initial 53-man roster, the Browns seem to have met their goal. Only OL Michael Dunn and rookie LB Tony Fields II are listed as out on the Browns Vs Chiefs final injury report.

A number of Cleveland players are listed as questionable including Odell Beckham Jr. and Grant Delpit who are both returning from season-ending injuries last season.

For Kansas City, the biggest story doesn’t show up on the injury report. As we have covered including updating this afternoon, SS Tyrann Mathieu has not been activated from the COVID-19 reserve list but must be by Saturday at 4 PM to play on Sunday.

The Chiefs only list OL Austin Blythe as out for Sunday with two others including edge rusher Frank Clark as questionable.

The final injury report can be found here:

The Browns are hopeful that all of their questionable players will be available Sunday but we will only find out, officially, around 3 PM. We will keep you updated with all the injury reports leading up to Sunday’s big Week 1 matchup.

Browns Vs Chiefs Week 1: Behind Enemy Lines with Chiefs Wire

What does Week 1 mean to the Chiefs? What’s up with their OL and defense? When must we know about Honey Badger? Behind Enemy Lines with @TheChiefsWire here with the answers:

As we prepare to watch the Cleveland Browns take on the Kansas City Chiefs, we wanted to get a better feel for how things are looking for the home team in Week 1. Browns versus Chiefs could be the best game of the opening week of the NFL season.

We checked in with Charles Goldman Managing Editor of Chiefs Wire for a look into the opponent in Week 1’s Behind Enemy Lines series:

The Chiefs remade their offensive line this offseason after a disastrous experience in the Super Bowl, which position (or positions) might still be a weak link there for Week 1?

It’d be a real homer answer to say they don’t have a weak link, but compared to the Super Bowl it really feels like it. I’m going to go with the left tackle position, though. The Chiefs’ big-time trade acquisition, Orlando Brown Jr., has been the weakest player in pass protection through three preseason games. While all other starters only allowed a single pressure combined, he allowed one in each preseason game. He’s still clearly making some adjustments moving to a pass-heavy scheme in Kansas City, while coming from a run-heavy scheme in Baltimore.

Nationally, there are concerns about the Chiefs’ defense but there are big names on that side of the ball. Is KC actually concerned about the quality of their defense?

I don’t think anyone who actually saw the Chiefs defense play during the preseason is too concerned. The starting defensive unit for Kansas City allowed just 56 yards, three first downs and no touchdowns through all three preseason games. That includes snaps played against Jimmy Garoppolo, Trey Lance, Kyler Murray, and Kirk Cousins. They also tied for the most sacks in the league (15) through the entire preseason. They did that without Frank Clark for all three games. Chris Jones also missed the Week 3 game against the Vikings. Really, this group looks deeper and more comfortable than they’ve ever been in their two years prior under Steve Spagnuolo.

While we know Patrick Mahomes just keeps getting better, is there a hope of slowing down the Chiefs’ passing attack besides a bad offensive line?

You can hope that the pass-catchers forget they have hands. Browns fans probably know what that is like after having Demetrius Harris on the team. Look, It’s really tough to stop what the Chiefs have got going on offense. Between Mahomes’ natural talent, the bevy of weapons on offense and the schematic genius dreamt up by Andy Reid — you’ve got to catch them on the right day if you’re going to come away with a win.

Tyrann Mathieu continues to be out due to COVID-19, is there a drop-dead date where he must return to play Sunday afternoon?

Yeah, they need to activate Mathieu from the Reserve/COVID-19 list by Saturday at 4:00 p.m. league office time. If that happens he’ll have a chance to play. He’s been participating in team meetings via Zoom. Both Andy Reid and Steve Spagnuolo have mentioned that Mathieu is the type of player who doesn’t need to practice in order to play. Typically, Reid requires his guys to get in a limited practice on Friday in order to have a shot to play.

This game has a lot of meaning to Cleveland, does it feel that way for Kansas City or are the Browns just another game?

Sure, the Chiefs aren’t out for any postseason revenge, but this game has a ton of meaning for the players, coaches and fans in Kansas City. It’s not because they’re playing the Browns, but rather because it’s the first game since a massively disappointing performance in Super Bowl LV. The Chiefs want to put that game behind them and the only way to truly do that is to start the season off strong with a win over an ascendant team in the AFC conference.

Make sure to follow Goldman and Chiefs Wire for everything Kansas City from now until after the game ends.
