Stefanski: WR KhaDarel Hodge ready to resume practicing with Browns

Hodge has been on I.R. with a hamstring injury

Reinforcements should be on the way soon for the Cleveland Browns receiving corps. Wideout KhaDarel Hodge is set to begin practicing with the team this week and could be activated from injured reserve in time to play in the Week 8 matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski said Hodge is ready to come back to practice after missing the last three games with a hamstring injury that led the team to place him on I.R. Stefanski seemed hopeful in his press conference Monday that Hodge, known for his blocking and special teams prowess, will be activated soon.

The Browns have a need with Odell Beckham Jr. going on I.R. after tearing his left ACL in Sunday’s win over the Bengals. Cleveland has a bye in Week 9 after hosting the Raiders on Sunday.

Possible options for the Browns to replace Odell Beckham Jr.

Odell Beckham Jr. injury update: Torn ACL, out for the season

Odell Beckham Jr. injury update: Torn ACL, out for the season

The Browns got the news back from the medical staff, and it’s not good for wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr.

Monday’s MRI revealed Beckham tore a ligament in his knee while attempting to make a tackle in the Week 7 win over the Cincinnati Bengals. Beckham will need surgery to repair the injury and that will end his 2020 season after just seven games.

Beckham’s second season in Cleveland ends with the enigmatic receiver catching 23 passes for 319 yards and scoring three TDs. He also rushed for 72 yards and the game-sealing touchdown in the win over Dallas.

After playing in all 16 games in 2019, this is the third time in four years Beckham’s season ends with the Pro Bowl receiver missing at least four games due to injury.

Odell Beckham Jr. and JC Tretter both injured on the same play

Two Browns offensive starters went down during Darius Phillips’ INT return

It was a terrible first pass play for the Cleveland Browns offense in the Week 7 matchup with Cincinnati. On a play where Baker Mayfield threw an interception attempting to find WR Odell Beckham Jr. on a deep fly pattern, both Beckham and center JC Tretter left the field with injuries suffered on the play.

Beckham laid on the ground grasping at his knee/calf area for some time after the play. As he chased CB Darius Phillips on the INT return, Beckham leapt awkwardly and took some contact. Beckham was helped into the Browns locker room for further evaluation.

Tretter was also on the turf well after the play ended. He was evaluated on the Browns sideline for a knee injury. Tretter was back on the field for the Browns’ ensuing drive.

Update: Beckham is questionable to return with a knee injury.

The Cincinnati Bengals will be without starting RB Joe Mixon when the Cleveland Browns invade Paul Brown Stadium on Sunday. The standout runner will miss the Week 7 Battle of Ohio with a foot injury.

Cincinnati will also be without top CB William Jackson, who was ruled out with a concussion. They are the only two Bengals officially ruled out on the team’s final injury report on Friday.

Two others are questionable:

  • WR John Ross
  • Safety Shawn Williams

Expect more of Gio Bernard in place of Mixon, while Darius Phillips figures to get most of Jackson’s action. The Bengals remain without prized free agent CB Trae Waynes as well.

Final Browns injury report for Week 7 vs. Bengals

3 Browns are ruled out, including two offensive starters

Three Cleveland Browns players have been ruled out in the final Week 7 injury report. That includes two starters who will miss the rematch with the Bengals.

The most surprising development is the loss of Austin Hooper for the game. Hooper suffered a bout of appendicitis and needed an emergency appendectomy on Friday. He will miss at least this week’s game.

Also ruled out are starting RG Wyatt Teller (calf) and rookie LB Jacob Phillips (knee). Both players missed the Week 6 loss in Pittsburgh as well.

Quarterback Baker Mayfield will play through the pain with his bruised ribs, an injury suffered in Week 5. He did not have an injury designation this week. Wide receiver Jarvis Landry suffered a broken rib in the same game but he will also continue to play.

Safety Karl Joseph is listed as questionable for the game after missing the last two contests due to a bum hamstring. Ronnie Harrison, who started in Joseph’s place in Week 5, is back without any injury designation. Harrison missed the Pittsburgh game with a concussion. Sheldon Richardson will also play after missing Thursday’s practice with a minor Achilles ailment.

Austin Hooper has appendectomy, will miss Week 7

Hooper had emergency surgery on Friday for appendicitis

The Cleveland Browns had an unexpected injury situation arise on Friday. Starting tight end Austin Hooper has been ruled out of Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals after undergoing an emergency appendectomy.

Hooper has been active in practices and without any injury designation before the bout of appendicitis that required immediate surgery.

“He’s in good spirits,” head coach Kevin Stefanski told reporters on Friday. “Obviously we’ll miss him but we’ll hold down the fort until he gets back.”

Hooper led the Browns in targets over the last two games. He has 22 receptions in the first six games, five of those in Week 6. He will be replaced by the combination of David Njoku, Harrison Bryant and Stephen Carlson.

Karl Joseph ‘progressing’ with his hamstring injury but still limited in practice

Joseph hopes to play in Week 7 after missing the last two games

Karl Joseph has missed the Cleveland Browns’ last two games. The starting safety is working his way back from a hamstring injury and could be in the mix to play in Week 7 in Cincinnati.

Joseph was a limited participant in Thursday’s practice session while still nursing the hamstring issue. He was also a limited participant on Wednesday, the first time he’s practiced two days in a row since suffering the injury.

“I would say he is progressing coming off that injury,” Browns coach Kevin Stefanski said of Joseph on Thursday in his press conference. “We will see how he does today responding to working yesterday for the first time out there at practice. Karl brings a veteran presence, a smart football player, plays fast and kind of fits what we want to be.”

In Week 5, Joseph was replaced in the lineup by Ronnie Harrison. But Harrison suffered a concussion and also missed the Week 6 game, leaving Sheldrick Redwine to start with Andrew Sendejo at safety. Harrison has cleared concussion protocols and has been a full participant in practices all week.

Jarvis Landry suffered a broken rib in the Week 5 win over the Colts

Jarvis Landry has never missed a game in his seven-year NFL career. Landry isn’t letting a broken rib suffered early in the Browns’ Week 5 win over the Colts from snapping his consecutive game streak at 102.

Landry revealed he broke a rib on the third play of the game in the win over Indianapolis when he took a huge hit. The veteran WR crawled off the field after the hit but did return to action. Landry also played over half the offensive snaps in the Week 6 loss to the Steelers.

“It hurts,” Landry said of the rib during his press conference on Thursday. “Depending on the play or whatever, at times it is bearable. We have done a good job of making sure that I am getting protection here throughout the week and making sure that I cover it up and do whatever I need to do to play on Sundays.”

Landry sat out practice last week but has been a limited participant in both sessions this week in advance of Sunday’s trip to Cincinnati.

Sheldon Richardson misses Browns practice with an Achilles injury

Richardson worked out on the exercise bike instead of practicing

Fear not, it’s not a torn Achilles tendon. Gotta get that out of the way before proceeding…

Browns starting defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson did not practice on Thursday. The team listed him with did not participate status with an Achilles injury.

Richardson was a full go in Wednesday’s practice and the move appears just precautionary. He was filmed riding an exercise bike off to the side of the practice field in Berea and working with trainers. That wouldn’t be happening if Richardson had a torn Achilles.

Linebacker Jacob Phillips (knee) and right tackle Wyatt Teller (calf) were also sidelined from Thursday’s practice. Both missed Wednesday’s session with their injuries as well.
