Broncos honor Randy Gradishar, add 2 players to Ring of Fame during Raiders game

The Broncos honored Randy Gradishar, Steve Foley, Riley Odoms and the 1977 team against the Raiders on Sunday.

The Denver Broncos are throwing it back to 1977 for their AFC West showdown with the Las Vegas Raiders today.

In addition to wearing their beautiful throwback uniform, the Broncos painted their field to appear as it did against the Raiders in the 1977 AFC Championship game, and they updated their scoreboards and stadium signage to reflect the throwback design.

Denver is also playing 1970s-inspired music to complete the throwback atmosphere, and there was a nod to “Back to the Future” outside the stadium.

Before the game, the Broncos unveiled the Ring of Fame pillars for new Ring of Fame members safety Steve Foley and tight end Riley Odoms.

Denver also honored linebacker Randy Gradishar for his recent enshrinement in the Pro Football Hall of Fame before Sunday’s game.

At halftime, Foley and Odoms were officially recognized as the newest members of the team’s Ring of Fame. The Broncos also honored the 1977 team that reached the first Super Bowl in franchise history at halftime.

More than 120 former Denver players returned to Empower Field at Mile High as part of the team’s Alumni Weekend festivities.

“I’m just glad that they’re coming out and getting a chance to be honored,” coach Sean Payton said on Friday. “I think what Carrie [Walton Penner] and Greg [Penner] have done to embrace our history, not only in the building… If you went through the hallways this offseason, here’s the tight ends room and here are the [photographs of former Broncos] tight ends. It’s pretty impressive, and I know how important it is to our ownership, and I know how important it is to me. … I’m excited for those that are obviously getting honored, and then also those that can enjoy and be back for that experience.”

F1 driver and team co-owner Lewis Hamilton also attended Saturday’s walk-through practice.

To complete the throwback, the Broncos will need to beat the Raiders, just like they did in the 1977 AFC Championship game (20-17).

Broncos share amazing video of throwback uniforms

The Broncos’ social media team showed the team’s equipment managers putting the throwback uniforms together before Week 5.

The Denver Broncos are preparing for the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 5, and they are going to turn back the clock to 1977.

This week, the Broncos will don their throwback jerseys worn from 1967-1996, for the first time since the team lost in the 1996 AFC divisional playoff game to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

To commemorate the historic induction of linebacker Randy Gradishar — the backbone of the “Orange Crush” defense — and his Pro Football Hall of Fame nod, the team will also be honoring members of the 1977 team, the first in franchise history to reach a Super Bowl.

Denver’s social media team released a video of equipment managers preparing helmets with the throwback decals, details of the jerseys, and a new team profile picture for the matchup of these longtime rivals:

The Broncos also re-shared the initial hype video from when the throwback uniforms were announced earlier this year:

These are by far the team’s most popular uniforms, and we’re eager to see them in action against the Raiders on Sunday.

Broncos vs. Raiders series history: Denver aims to snap 8-game losing streak

The Broncos and Raiders will meet for the 130th time on Sunday. Denver will aim to snap an eight-game losing streak against their rival.

It’s rivalry week for the Denver Broncos as they are set to face the Las Vegas Raiders for the first time in 2024 in Week 5.

This will be the 130th all-time meeting of the teams, as the Raiders lead the series 73-54-2 against the Broncos. Denver looks to come in hungry against Las Vegas, as the Raiders have won eight straight games in this matchup. In those eight victories, Las Vegas has outscored the Broncos 218-149.

The last game played between these two teams came at the end of 2023, as the Broncos featured quarterback Jarrett Stidham under center, while the Raiders started then-rookie Aidan O’Connell. Stidham finished 20-of-34 for 272 yards, one touchdown and one interception in a 27-14 loss.

This week, Denver rookie quarterback Bo Nix looks to win his third straight game after back-to-back wins versus the Buccaneers and Jets on the road.

The Broncos will wear their iconic throwback jerseys, which hopefully will bring them luck as they celebrate the 1977 team that went to Super Bowl XXII. That year, the “Orange Crush” and the “M and M” connection of quarterback Craig Morton and wide receiver Haven Moses beat the Raiders 20-17 in the AFC Championship.

Maybe Denver can “make those miracles happen” one more time.

Pat Surtain wishes Broncos would wear throwback uniform more often

“They’re my favorite uniform combo for sure,” Broncos CB Pat Surtain said of the throwbacks. “It sucks that we can only wear them twice.”

The Denver Broncos are breaking out their beautiful throwback uniform for this week’s game against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Many Broncos fans have called for Denver to make the throwback look the team’s primary uniform, and it sounds like star cornerback Pat Surtain is on board with that idea.

“They’re tight,” Surtain said Wednesday. “I’m not going to lie, they’re my favorite uniform combo for sure.  It sucks that we can only wear them twice this year. I wish we could wear it more times, but I have to come out swaggy this week, put something together for sure.”

The Broncos are allowed to wear alternate/throwback uniforms up to three times per season. Denver is using one of those three games to wear an alternate navy jersey with a white helmet, leaving just two games for the throwback uniform (here’s the full uniform schedule).

“I love the uniform,” Broncos coach Sean Payton said of the throwbacks. “It’s what I grew up watching. [With] the players, I don’t know if it creates a different energy [but], more importantly, the timing is good for the players that we’re honoring that they wore that uniform.”

Denver will host former players at Alumni Weekend on Sunday. The throwback uniform was inspired by the 1977 team that reached the Super Bowl for the first time in franchise history, and those players have been invited to Empower Field at Mile High for the Raiders game.

The team will also honor linebacker linebacker Randy Gradishar for his enshrinement in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and the team will recognize safety Steve Foley and tight end Riley Odoms for their selection to the Broncos Ring of Fame.

“I think they’re awesome,” quarterback Bo Nix said of the throwbacks. “I think any time you can pay a little tribute to former teams that have come before you and have kind of laid the foundation for the opportunity that you have, I think that’s really important. It’s fun to wear throwbacks. I think that’s always a neat thing that teams are able to do, and ours are pretty cool.”

Denver wide receiver Courtland Sutton is also a big fan of the throwback look, and he’s eager to get a win against the division-rival Raiders while wearing the uniform.

“You’ve seen them. They’re sweet!” Sutton said. “I’m looking forward to Sunday and putting the threads on. The helmets already look — the helmets are some good eye candy for sure. They’re going to be nice. I’m looking forward to wearing them, but the thing that is going to be even more exciting and make the moment even more fulfilled is if we go out there and get a win.

“A divisional win at that. That would make it even more special of a moment. Bringing the throwbacks back, but to get a win and a divisional win at home in them, that moment would be very satisfying.”

Sunday’s game will be regionally televised on Fox. The Broncos are considered favorites at home this week.

Broncos’ Orange Crush-inspired throwback uniforms are a big hit

The Broncos have unveiled 1977-inspired throwback uniforms and they are absolutely beautiful.

The Denver Broncos unveiled new primary (and alternate) uniforms on Monday that have been met with mixed reviews. There are vocal fans on social media who strongly dislike the new look, but there are also fans who view it as a big improvement on the previous threads.

While there’s not a strong consensus on the primary uniforms, the Orange Crush-inspired throwback look has received overwhelmingly positive reviews from both fans and pundits.

Here’s the club’s description of the new throwback, courtesy of a press release from the team:

Honoring the Orange Crush era and the 1977 season when the Broncos made their first Super Bowl appearance, the throwback closet features the iconic Legacy Blue ‘D’ helmet and orange uniforms adapted to Nike’s current chassis with peak performance fabric.

Helmet: The Legacy Blue shell pairs with a white facemask and vertical orange stripe. The fan-favorite and iconic Denver ‘D’ logo originally introduced in 1968 will return to the Broncos’ uniform closet rotation for the first time on a Legacy Blue helmet since 1996.

Jersey: The classic orange jersey features oversized white numbers with Legacy Blue trim on the front, back and top of the shoulders. A sleeve stripe sits at the shoulder mirroring the Legacy Blue trim from the numbers.

Pants: The white pants include an orange and Legacy Blue stripe down the length of the pants.

Socks: The socks include orange and Legacy Blue bands that align with the stripes of the jerseys and pants.

The Broncos unveiled the uniform on Monday with a video showing Pro Football Hall of Fame linebacker Randy Gradishar handing off an Orange Crush-era helmet to star cornerback Pat Surtain.

Denver called it a “blast from the past” on social media:

The Broncos can wear alternate/throwback uniforms up to three times per season. It seems safe to say fans in Denver will be excited every time this look is pulled out of the closet.
