Finally, August has arrived.

Denver Broncos training camp is in full swing and preseason begins later this month. Football is officially back.

During the slow part of the NFL offseason, we published quick bios for every player on the team’s 90-man offseason roster (plus one suspended player). Ahead of the start of preseason, here is a look at the Broncos’ updated roster.

Each player’s name is linked to a bio with a brief summary of their career before landing in Denver and how it’s gone since they’ve arrived. We’ve included players on the non-football injury (NFI) and physically unable to perform (PUP) lists. The Broncos do not currently have any players on injured reserve.

Notes: As part of the NFL’s International Player Pathway (IPP) program, tight end Thomas Yassmin would not count against the 16-player limit if he makes the practice squad this summer. Meanwhile, defensive lineman Eyioma Uwazurike does not count against the 90-man offseason roster limit while suspended.

The Broncos have to trim the roster down to 53 players by Aug. 27. After finalizing an active roster, Denver can build a 16-player practice squad. We will track all of the team’s roster moves on Broncos Wire.

Story update: The Broncos placed Quinn Bailey on injured reserve on Thursday and signed offensive lineman Oliver Jervis.

Broncos roster series: No. 3, kicker Wil Lutz

Wil Lutz converted 88.2% of his field goal attempts and went 29-of-31 on PATs in his first season with the Broncos.

Broncos Wire’s 90-man offseason roster series continues today with a look at ninth-year kicker Wil Lutz, No. 3 (he switched from No. 16 this offseason).

Before the Broncos: Lutz (29) signed with the Baltimore Ravens as an undrafted free agent out of Georgia State in 2016. After failing to make Baltimore’s 53-man roster, Lutz was claimed off waivers by the New Orleans Saints. He went on to spend the next seven years in New Orleans.

Lutz sat out the 2021 season after undergoing core muscle surgery, but he played all other 97 games for the Saints from 2016-2020 and 2022. Lutz completed 84.6% of his field goal attempts during that time with a long of 60 yards.

Broncos tenure: After drafting Blake Grupe, New Orleans agreed to trade Lutz to Denver last summer in exchange for a seventh-round pick. In his first season with the Broncos, Lutz converted 88.2% of his field goal attempts with a long of 52 yards. He went 29-of-31 on extra point attempts.

Chances to make the 53-man roster: Near lock. Lutz is currently the only kicker on the 90-man offseason roster and unless he struggles significantly this summer, his job should be safe.

PFF ranks Broncos’ roster dead last in the NFL

Pro Football Focus ranked all 32 rosters in the NFL. They have the Broncos ranked last.

The Denver Broncos went 8-9 last season, but Pro Football Focus has them ranked as the worst roster in the NFL leading into the 2024 season (32nd out of 32 clubs). Perhaps it could be the release of Russell Wilson and Justin Simmons, as they are not on the roster, but that may not have made much of a difference.

According to Jim Wyman and Dalton Wasserman of PFF, though, the strength of this Broncos’ roster will be their offensive line.

“Other than at center, which is up in the air after Lloyd Cushenberry III’s departure, the Broncos have a very well-rounded offensive line,” Wyman and Wasserman wrote. “Quinn Meinerz was a breakout star last season, posting an 83.7 grade that ranked third among all guards.”

However, PFF highlights the weaknesses for Denver going into 2024 will be the defense.

“Outside of Patrick Surtain II, this defense lacks playmakers at every level. The unit was responsible for a 70-point debacle against the Dolphins in 2023 that made them the laughingstock of the league.

“Things improved dramatically throughout the season, as defensive coordinator Vance Joseph managed to do damage control and reorganize the defense in a more favorable manner, but there are still a lot of holes that weren’t fixed.”

While analytics drives Pro Football Focus regarding ratings, we will have to see if the eye test backs up PFF’s claim about Denver’s roster moving forward. To view the complete rankings, visit PFF’s website.
