Broncos have 4 candidates for 2025 Hall of Fame class

The Broncos have four candidates for the 2025 Pro Football Hall of Fame class, including two-time Super Bowl champion Neil Smith.

Former Denver Broncos coaches Mike Shanahan and Dan Reeves were named semifinalists for the 2025 Pro Football Hall of Fame class earlier this week.

Shanahan and Reeves are two of nine candidates in the coach category. The selection committee will narrow that list of nine semifinalists down to one finalist later this month.

The Broncos also have two modern-era players who made the cutdown from 167 nominees down to 50 candidates last month: defensive linemen Neil Smith and Simeon Rice.

That gives Denver four total candidates for next year’s Hall of Fame class.

  2. Coach Dan Reeves
  3. DL Neil Smith
  4. DL Simeon Rice

The Hall of Fame’s selection committee will meet on Nov. 19 to select one coach finalist. The list of modern-era player nominees will also be trimmed down to 25 semifinalists later this month. The 2025 class will be announced before Super Bowl LVIX next year.

Ravens QB Lamar Jackson (back/knee) has been cleared for Sunday. Broncos DB P.J. Locke (thumb) has been ruled out.

Denver Broncos starting safety P.J. Locke (thumb) has been ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Baltimore Ravens. Devon Key is expected to start in Locke’s place against the Ravens.

Elsewhere on the injury front, right tackle Mike McGlinchey (knee) fully participated in Friday’s practice session and he’s been cleared to play.

Meanwhile, Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson (back/knee) returned to practice on Friday after sitting out on Wednesday and Thursday. Jackson told reporters in Baltimore that his status for Sunday was “never in doubt.” The QB said sitting out two days this week was “just resting my body.” Jackson was not given a game status designation on Friday, so he is officially cleared to play.

Broncos cut player from offense ahead of Ravens game

The Broncos cut FB Michael Burton from the 53-man roster on Friday. He’s expected to return on the practice squad.

Story update: The Broncos re-signed Mike Burton to the practice squad on Saturday. He was then elevated from the practice squad to the game-day roster for Week 9. See our original post below.

The Denver Broncos have released fullback Michael Burton ahead of their game against the Baltimore Ravens, according to the NFL’s transaction wire (via multiple reports).

Burton, 32, is a vested veteran, so he’ll become a free agent immediately without having to clear the waiver wire. The Broncos plan to re-sign him to the practice squad, presumably on Saturday.

Denver needed to open up a spot on the active roster for offensive lineman Calvin Throckmorton, who was out of practice squad elevations. Throckmorton was promoted to the 53-man roster on Friday and he will serve as the team’s backup center against the Ravens on Sunday.

Burton started the season on Denver’s practice squad and he was elevated to the game-day roster in Week 1. He is also expected to be elevated this week. The fullback would then be eligible to be elevated one more time this season.

NFL teams can elevate two players from the practice squad each week, but each player is limited to three elevations per season.

Broncos release injury report: Starting safety still sidelined

Broncos safety P.J. Locke (thumb) missed practice again on Thursday.

Denver Broncos starting safety P.J. Locke (thumb) missed practice again on Thursday while right tackle Mike McGlinchey (knee) returned to practice.

Devon Key played in the place of Locke last week and he totaled five tackles. Alex Palczewski started three games in the place of an injured McGlinchey earlier this season. McGlinchey and Palczewski are now both healthy.

As for the Baltimore Ravens, quarterback Lamar Jackson (back/knee) missed practice again on Thursday. His status will be a big storyline to watch going into the weekend.

Broncos QB Bo Nix named NFL Offensive Rookie of the Month for October

Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix is the third offensive rookie in team history to win the Rookie of the Month award.

Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix had himself one spectacular October, and now the rest of the NFL has been put on notice.

Nix was named the NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Month for October on Thursday, the NFL announced. According to a press release from the team, Nix becomes the third Broncos rookie to win the award, joining running backs Clinton Portis (Oct. 2002) and Mike Anderson (Oct. and Dec. 2000).

In four starts in October, Nix completed 82-of-123 passes (66.7%) for 870 yards with seven touchdowns and one interception (102.7 rtg.) while also rushing 29 times for 149 yards (5.1 avg.) with two scores. He led all rookies in offensive touchdowns (9), passing scores (7), completions (82), completion percentage (66.7%) and passing yards (870) in October.

Nix and Co. went 3-1 during the month, breaking a losing streak to the Las Vegas Raiders, winning an emotional homecoming for head coach Sean Payton and a posting convincing win over the Carolina Panthers. The only loss came at home against the Los Angeles Chargers on Oct. 13.

On the season, Nix has completed 165-of-261 passes (63.2%) for 1,530 yards with eight touchdowns and five interceptions (81.4 rtg.). His 165 completions are the most by a rookie in team history while his 1,530 passing yards rank fourth among Broncos rookie signal callers.

Nix will look to continue his development against the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday.

Mike Shanahan, Dan Reeves advance in Hall of Fame voting process

Mike Shanahan and the late Dan Reeves have been named semifinalists for the 2025 Pro Football Hall of Fame class.

Three-time Super Bowl champion Mike Shanahan is advancing as a coach candidate for the 2025 Pro Football Hall of Fame class, the Hall announced Thursday. Another former Denver Broncos coach, the late Dan Reeves, also advanced in the voting.

The list of coach 14 candidates has been trimmed down to nine semifinalists: Shanahan, Reeves, Bill Arnsparger, Tom Coughlin, Mike Holmgren, Chuck Knox, Marty Schottenheimer, George Seifert and Clark Shaughnessy.

Shanahan, 72, won his first Super Bowl as an offensive coordinator with the San Francisco 49ers following the 1994 season. He later won back-to-back Super Bowls as head coach of the Broncos in the 1997 and 1998 seasons. Elements of his offense are still seen across the NFL today.

Reeves died at age 77 in 2022. He reached two Super Bowls as a player with the Dallas Cowboys, winning his first title following the 1971 season. Reeves later reached three more Super Bowls as an assistant with the Cowboys, winning his second title after the 1977 season. He went on to reach four more Super Bowls as a head coach, including three with the Broncos.

Reeves’ nine total Super Bowl appearances represent the third-most in NFL history only behind Tom Brady (10) and Bill Belichick (12). Reeves should eventually reach Canton, and Shanahan seems to be trending toward a Hall of Fame nod in 2025.

Denver also has two modern-era player candidates for the 2025 class in defensive linemen Neil Smith and Simeon Rice.

The Hall of Fame’s selection committee will meet on Nov. 19 to select one finalist from the coach category to advance in the voting process. The list of modern-era player nominees will also be trimmed down to 25 semifinalists in November. The 2025 class will be announced before Super Bowl LVIX next year.

3 players Broncos should not make available at NFL trade deadline

The Broncos might get calls about these players leading up to the NFL trade deadline, but they should keep all three players on the squad.

With the NFL trade deadline (Nov. 5) just a few days away, we recently published a list of eight players the Denver Broncos might consider trading.

Today, we’re taking a quick look at three players that the Broncos should not trade away, even if they receive interest from other clubs.

3. QB Zach Wilson: Denver has a pair of capable backup quarterbacks in Jarrett Stidham and Wilson, so QB-needy teams might come calling. If the Broncos are going to trade one of them, it would make more sense to deal Stidham (28) because Wilson (25) is younger with more long-term upside.

2. WR Courtland Sutton: Denver has spurned trade interest in Sutton in each of the last two seasons, and Sutton will probably draw interest again this year. Sutton (29) remains the team’s top wide receiver, though, and with a rookie quarterback under center, it wouldn’t be smart to strip the offense of its best and most competent receiver.

3. OLB Jonathon Cooper: NFL Network has reported that Cooper could draw interest, but the Broncos should not entertain the possibility of trading him. Cooper (26) ranks second on the team with 5.5 sacks this year and he’s been more productive and healthier than Baron Browning over the last four years. If Denver plans to move a pass rusher, it should be Browning.

If the team makes any trades in the coming days, we will track all of the potential moves on Broncos Wire.

2 men charged with attempted murder in Josh Reynolds case

Two men have been charged with attempted murder and other chargers after Broncos wide receiver Josh Reynolds was shot on Oct. 18.

Two men have been charged with attempted murder and other chargers after Denver Broncos wide receiver Josh Reynolds was shot on Oct. 18.

Luis Mendoza, 35, faces 23 charges, according to KUSA-TV’s Kevin Vaughan and Janet Oravetz: six counts of attempted first-degree murder; six counts of first-degree assault; three counts of illegal discharge of a firearm; three counts of drug possession; four counts of weapons possession by a previous offender; and one count of possession of a large capacity magazine.

Burr Charlesworth, 42, faces 15 charges: six counts of attempted first-degree murder; six counts of first-degree assault; and three counts of illegal discharge of a firearm.

Mendoza has a $300,000 cash-only bail and remains in the Denver County Jail. Charlesworth posted a $100,000 bail and was released.

Reynolds and two others left a Glendale strip club on Oct. 18 and were followed by multiple vehicles. Reynolds was then shot in his arm and the back of his head. One of the men with him was shot in the back and the other man was wounded by flying glass.

From the Vaughan and Oravetz story:

Following his arrest, Charlesworth told investigators he was “helping” a friend who had asked him to follow the victims due to a prior conflict. He denied he ever shot at the victims and said the gunfire came from the other vehicles. He refused to describe those vehicles, according to the court documents.

The Broncos said in a statement that Reynolds suffered minor injuries. Reynolds, 29, was back at practice last week and he was on the sideline for the team’s game against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday. Reynolds is currently on injured reserve with a finger injury. He will be eligible to return from IR next week.

Seahawks host ex-Broncos pass rusher on free agent visit

Former Broncos pass rusher Randy Gregory had a free agent visit with the Seahawks on Wednesday.

The Seattle Seahawks hosted former Denver Broncos pass rusher Randy Gregory on a free agent visit today, according to KPRC-TV’s Aaron Wilson.

Gregory, 31, signed a five-year, $70 million deal with the Broncos in 2022. He was healthy for six games in 2022 and totaled two sacks. Last season, Gregory recorded one sack in five games before being traded to the San Francisco 49ers.

Gregory signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this spring, but he was released this summer after never reporting to the team. Gregory also filed a lawsuit against the NFL and Broncos this summer for what he believes were discriminatory fines. Though the team was named in the lawsuit, it’s primarily a case against the NFL.

“I’m aware of what was written in the lawsuit, but it’s nothing that I had to deal with directly at all,” Denver coach Sean Payton said in June. “I think it is more — and even talking with his agent — I think it’s more of a league issue than necessarily a Broncos issue. Nonetheless, there was nothing that I ever dealt with.”

Elsewhere on the ex-Bronco front, the Miami Dolphins designated wide receiver River Cracraft to return and the Los Angeles Chargers promoted center Sam Mustipher to the active roster on Wednesday.

Broncos injury report: Window opens for safety to return from PUP

Broncos safety Delarrin Turner-Yell (ACL) returned to practice today, starting his 21-day window to return from the PUP list.

Denver Broncos safety Delarrin Turner-Yell returned to practice on Wednesday, officially starting his 21-day window to return from the physically unable to perform list.

Turner-Yell tore his ACL and meniscus in Week 17 last season. The Broncos now have three weeks to active him to the 53-man roster. If Turner-Yell is not activated within three weeks, he will remain on reserve for the rest of the season.

Denver has one other player — linebacker Drew Sanders (Achilles) — on the PUP list. He’s apparently not ready to open his practice window yet.

Elsewhere on the injury front, safety P.J. Locke (thumb) did not practice Wednesday and right tackle Mike McGlinchey (knee) was also held out.

As for the Baltimore Ravens, quarterback Lamar Jackson (back/knee) did not practice on Wednesday. Ravens coach John Harbaugh described Jackson’s absence as a rest day.
