Auburn baseball drops regional opener to Penn

The Quakers scored three runs in the 11th inning to stun the regional hosts on Friday night.

Samford opened the Auburn Regional on Friday afternoon by stunning Southern Miss, 4-2, to force the Golden Eagles into the losers bracket.

Turns out, that would not be the only upset that the walls of Plainsman Park would see on the day.

The No. 13 overall seed, Auburn, hosted the Ivy League Champion Penn Quakers in the No. 1 vs. No. 4 matchup in primetime on Friday evening only to leave in defeat as they fell to Penn, 6-3 in 11 innings.

After tying the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the 8th inning to ultimately set up extra baseball, the Quakers pieced together three runs in the top of the 11th inning thanks to a pair of fielder’s choices and an RBI double by Ryan Taylor. Penn’s Carson Ozmer faced the minimum in the bottom half of the inning to nail down the win for his team.

“I give all the credit in the world to Penn,” Auburn coach [autotag]Butch Thompson[/autotag] said following the game. “We knew they had a high-level pitching staff. We just didn’t get enough hits. We couldn’t link up enough offensively to keep pace.”

Ozmer got the win for the Quakers by tossing 3.2 innings of relief where he allowed one hit and struck out three batters. His relief outing complimented Ryan Dromboski’s start which lasted 5.1 innings. While on the mound, Dromboski allowed three hits, two earned runs, and four walks while striking out eight batters. Penn pitchers combined to strike out 14 Auburn batters in the game while only allowing four hits.

After three innings of scoreless effort from both squads, Penn grabbed an early lead in the top of the 4th on a double by Wyatt Henseler to give his team the early 1-0 lead. The Tigers responded in the 6th inning by stealing the lead away on a bases-loaded walk to [autotag]Cooper McMurray[/autotag] and a groundout by [autotag]Kason Howell[/autotag] that scored [autotag]Ike Irish[/autotag] from third base to put Auburn ahead, 2-1.

Penn regained the advantage in the top of the 8th inning on a two-run blast by Jackson Appel to move them ahead, 3-2. The lead was shortlived as [autotag]Brody Moss[/autotag] was walked with the bases loaded to score [autotag]Josh Hall[/autotag] to ultimately send the game to extra innings.

Auburn will look to rebound on Saturday afternoon as the Tigers will face Southern Miss in an elimination game at Plainsman Park. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. CT and can be seen on ESPN+.

Auburn baseball smothers UAB behind three-hit effort from Bryson Ware

Ware picked up three of Auburn’s four hits as the Tigers pick up their fifth straight win.

In a game where both offenses were at a premium, it was Auburn that stood tall over the visiting UAB Blazers.

Both teams combined to record just seven base hits, with Auburn taking credit for four of them. Behind a one-hit effort from Auburn pitching, and a three-hit performance by Bryson Ware, Auburn earned its fifth straight win by defeating UAB, 4-1 on Tuesday at Plainsman Park.

Bryson Ware recorded three of Auburn’s four hits and scored half of Auburn’s runs on a two-run home run in the bottom of the 4th inning. Cole Foster was the other Tiger who recorded a hit in a tough game that featured eight UAB pitchers.

The game got off to a slow start, as neither team could produce more than one hit through the first three innings. Auburn’s [autotag]Bryson Ware[/autotag] led off the 2nd inning with a single up the middle, but could not advance past third base to give Auburn a lead.

[autotag]Ike Irish[/autotag] became Auburn’s second base runner in the 4th inning on a ground-ball blunder by UAB shortstop Gavin Lewis Jr. Two pitches later, Ware sent a moonshot to the video board in left-center field to put the Tigers on the board, 2-0. The home run was his team-leading seventh of the season.

Auburn starter [autotag]Tommy Vail[/autotag] carried the momentum from his team’s newfound lead by striking out the side in the ensuing inning to improve his count to seven strikeouts through four innings.

Auburn’s third run of the game scored on a misread by UAB third baseman Ben Abernathy. [autotag]Cole Foster[/autotag] hit a pop-up toward third base, and the baseball changed directions multiple times, causing Abernathy to misjudge the ball on its descent. When the ball landed, [autotag]Brody Moss[/autotag] scored from second base, and the play was officially ruled a double and gave Auburn a 3-0 lead in the 5th inning.

Vail’s no-hit bid stayed intact through 4.2 innings but came with endangerment. With two down in the 5th inning, Vail walked Gavin Lewis and John Marc Mullins. At that point, [autotag]Chase Allsup[/autotag] was called upon to cap the inning. He did so on one pitch, which was a ground out by Ben Abernathy to Cole Foster at shortstop. Vail’s night ended with eight strikeouts, two walks, and no hits through 4.2 innings of work.

In Auburn’s half of the 6th inning, Ware recorded his third hit of the night by hitting a triple to center field and was sent home on a sacrifice fly by Bobby Peirce one at-bat later to extend Auburn’s lead to 4-0.

It took seven full innings, but UAB was finally able to secure their first hit. To lead off the 8th inning, UAB’s Tyler Waugh hit a single through the left side to erase the combined no-hitter performed by Vail and Allsup. The Blazers were unable to cash the hit in for a run, as they left a runner stranded at first base to end the inning.

The Blazers scored their first and only run with two outs in the 9th inning. Christian Hall singled up the middle to score John Marc Mullins from third to cut Auburn’s deficit to 4-1. The Blazers brought the tying run up to the plate, but Allsup struck out the final batter to end the game.

Auburn improves to 10-1-1 while UAB falls to 4-8.

Auburn baseball will have a quick turnaround as they hit the road on Wednesday to face Jax State at Jim Case Stadium in Jacksonville. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. CT and can be seen on ESPN+.

Photo Gallery: Auburn baseball handles USC to clinch series

Auburn broke a 3-3 tie with a five-run 6th inning to earn the series win over the Trojans on Saturday.

Auburn baseball faced adversity early in Saturday’s game against USC. Johnny Olmstead scored the Trojans’ first three runs of the game, one on a solo blast and two more on a couple of Auburn errors to give USC the 3-0 lead through three innings.

Auburn responded by tying the game in the 4th inning on three RBI singles by [autotag]Bryson Ware[/autotag], [autotag]Cooper McMurray[/autotag], and [autotag]Brody Moss[/autotag]. The Tigers then blew the game open in the 6th inning on three RBI singles and a fielders choice by [autotag]Mike Bello[/autotag] to put Auburn ahead, 8-3.

USC would gain some of those runs back in the 8th inning on a sacrifice fly by Carson Wells and a two-run double off of the left field wall by Adrian Colon-Rasado to trim the Tigers lead to 8-6. But, the trend continued in the bottom half of the inning when McMurray and Ware each hit two-run home runs to give Auburn the 12-6 win.

Auburn moves to 5-1 on the young season, and has clinched its’ second weekend series of the year. Here are the best images from Auburn Baseball’s 12-6 win over the Trojans on Saturday.

Auburn Baseball crushes North Alabama in first midweek tilt

Bobby Peirce, Bryson Ware, and Ike Irish lead the way as Auburn earns a win at Toyota Field in Madison.

New rules were introduced within SEC baseball this season, and it did not take long for Auburn to use them.

In the first midweek game of the 2023 season, Auburn traveled to Madison to face the North Alabama Lions in a neutral site affair at Toyota Field, home of the Rocket City Trash Pandas, the Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels. Auburn jumped out to a 6-0 1st inning lead and would cruise to an easy 13-1 victory in seven innings.

Reigning SEC Freshman of the Week, [autotag]Ike Irish[/autotag], got the Tigers on the board with a bases-loaded single to right field to score [autotag]Bobby Peirce[/autotag] from 3rd base to give Auburn the 1-0 lead. [autotag]Ryan Dyal[/autotag] and [autotag]Caden Hill[/autotag] followed Irish by also recording RBI singles in the inning. [autotag]Bryson Ware[/autotag] earned an RBI on a sacrifice fly while [autotag]Kason Howell[/autotag] plated a run on a fielder’s choice.

Peirce and [autotag]Brody Moss[/autotag] extended Auburn’s lead in the 3rd inning. Peirce scored two runs on a single down the left field line to push the Tigers’ lead to 8-0, and Moss scored Howell on a sacrifice fly with one out in the inning.

Auburn’s next three runs would come courtesy of the long ball. Peirce hit a solo shot in the 5th inning for his third RBI of the game to put Auburn ahead, 10-1. Ware joined the party in the 6th inning by hitting a two-run blast to extend Auburn’s lead to 12-1. Freshman [autotag]Chris Stanfield[/autotag] capped the scoring by singling home Foster in the 6th inning for his first collegiate RBI.

North Alabama’s lone run came in the 4th inning when Jackson Ferrigno hit a sacrifice fly to Kyle Machado from 3rd base to trim Auburn’s lead to 9-1 at that point in the game.

Peirce, Irish, and Ware each collected three hits on the night, with Peirce and Ware each plating three RBI. In his first start on the mound this season, senior [autotag]Konnor Copeland[/autotag] struck out six batters over 3.2 innings of work, allowing just three hits and one earned run. [autotag]John Armstrong[/autotag] and [autotag]Chase Isbell[/autotag] combined to strike out six batters over the final 3.1 innings to close the game.

Changes have been made to Auburn’s weekend schedule. It was announced late Tuesday night that Auburn’s weekend series against USC, which was originally scheduled to take place in Los Angeles, will now happen at Plainsman Park due to forecasted inclement weather expected in Southern California.

Game one of the series between the Tigers and Trojans is set for 6 p.m. CT on Friday.
