Kyle Shanahan has positive update on Brock Purdy shoulder injury

Brock Purdy’s shoulder is good to go.

It looked after Week 11 like another injury might take out one of the San Francisco 49ers key players.

Quarterback Brock Purdy suffered a right shoulder injury during the 49ers’ loss to the Seattle Seahawks that looked like it may wind up hindering him as the team tried holding onto its increasingly slim postseason hopes.

Purdy missed Week 12 vs. the Green Bay Packers, but returned in Week 13 vs. the Buffalo Bills.

It was hard to judge just how healthy Purdy was in Buffalo because the weather conditions and game script made it difficult for the 49ers to execute their passing game.

After Purdy went through a full week of practice leading up to Week 14 vs. the Chicago Bears, head coach Kyle Shanahan is confident the signal caller is fully healthy.

“He is good,” Shanahan said. “We had to wait a while to give him rest to make sure it healed, and we could see that it did at the end of last week and that’s why there’s no issues last Sunday and it’s been great all week. So, glad to get him back to full-speed and get him a full week of practice.”

With running backs Christian McCaffrey and Jordan Mason out, the 49ers desperately need Purdy to play at the level he played in 2023 when he was an MVP candidate.

Getting there without weapons like McCaffrey, Mason and wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk will be difficult, but doing it with a banged up throwing shoulder would’ve been nigh impossible.

Will Brock Purdy play this week? Injury updates for 49ers QB

49ers QB Brock Purdy is dealing with a shoulder injury. Here are the latest updates.

It looks like the San Francisco 49ers might get their quarterback back under center in time for a Week 13 matchup with the Buffalo Bills.

QB Brock Purdy injured his shoulder in Week 11 against the Seattle Seahawks and wound up missing the team’s blowout Week 12 loss to the Green Bay Packers.

Brock Purdy injury update

Purdy was limited throughout Week 12 and was ultimately ruled out on the Friday injury report. That changed in Week 13 where he was limited Wednesday and Thursday, then participated in full during Friday’s session.

The 49ers officially listed Purdy as ‘questionable,’ but head coach Kyle Shanahan sounded optimistic about the starting signal caller’s chances to suit up in Buffalo.

“Yes. I mean, lots of things can happen between now and then,” Shanahan said. “But right now he’s playing, so he’s doing good. He had a good day.”

ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Saturday night reported Purdy didn’t suffer any setbacks and would play.

We’ll officially find out 90 minutes before Sunday night’s scheduled 5:20pm Pacific Time kickoff.

How long was Brock Purdy out?

Purdy missed only one game, and even if he winds up missing Week 13, it doesn’t sound like his status would be in jeopardy well beyond this week.

49ers QB depth chart

If Purdy can’t go it would be Brandon Allen as the starter with Josh Dobbs suiting up as the backup QB. Allen started in Green Bay and completed 17-of-29 throws for 199 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

Kyle Shanahan explains Brock Purdy’s early exit from practice

Brock Purdy left Thursday’s practice early. Head coach Kyle Shanahan shed some light on that:

There’s a question mark for the San Francisco 49ers under center as they enter a crucial Week 12 matchup against the Green Bay Packers.

Quarterback Brock Purdy sustained a right shoulder injury in the team’s Week 11 loss to the Seattle Seahawks that head coach Kyle Shanahan classified as ‘soreness.’ Purdy was listed as a limited participant in Wednesday and Thursday’s practices.

He didn’t throw at all Wednesday in the portion of practices open to reporters. Thursday reporters noted Purdy did some light throwing before leaving the field.

Shanahan in an interview on KNBR after practice explained where things stand with the 49ers’ QB heading into Friday.

“He was still limited today,” Shanahan told host Adam Copeland. “He didn’t do as much yesterday, but did a little bit more today. He went out there and did a little bit then went back in about halfway through and rested up. Hopefully it will be feeling great on Sunday.”

It’s interesting that Shanahan said Purdy left the field to rest. There’s no real clarity on whether this is a maintenance issue for Purdy or if he’s unable to throw.

If it’s the former he should be on track to play Sunday in Green Bay. If it’s the latter we may see the team turn to backup QB Brandon Allen in the biggest game of the season.

Friday isn’t liable to provide a ton of clarity unless Purdy practices in full and isn’t on the injury report. He could also be listed as ‘questionable’ which could leave the lingering question mark hanging around until inactives are announced 90 minutes before kickoff.
