Joel Klatt includes LSU in latest College Football Playoff prediction

The Tigers’ playoff hopes are alive and well despite a loss to open the season.

LSU’s hopes of reaching the College Football Playoff for the first time under coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] in Year 3 seemed to take quite a hit in Week 1.

That season-opening loss to USC decreased the margin for error quite a bit, but the Tigers have won four games in a row since then, and with the remaining schedule looking relatively favorable, a clear path to the CFP remains in view.

College football analyst Joel Klatt is buying LSU’s chances. In his latest 12-team projection, he gives the Tigers the final at-large spot in the field with the No. 11 seed. Here’s his reasoning.

“I think LSU, I expect them to beat Ole Miss in that night game at Death Valley,” Klatt said. “I expect them to beat A&M on the road, beat Oklahoma at home and lose to Alabama. So for me, LSU is a 10-2 team, 7-1 in the SEC. 7-1 in the SEC, to me, gets you in.”

The game against the Rebels after the bye will certainly determine quite a bit about the trajectory the rest of the way, and with a win, the home game against the Crimson Tide is the only one remaining in which the Tigers are likely to be underdogs.

Hopes of a CFP berth remain alive as we near the midpoint of the 2024 season, and Kelly and LSU will look to finally get over that hump.

Staff grades for LSU’s 2024 season entering the bye week

Have the Tigers managed to meet expectations through five weeks of the 2024 season?

We’re five weeks into the 2024 season, and for LSU and coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag], a relatively familiar script has played out.

For the fifth consecutive season, the Tigers lost their season-opener to USC. That marked three neutral site opener losses to begin Kelly’s tenure in Baton Rouge.

But since then, LSU has turned things around, reeling off four wins in a row as it sits at 4-1 with Week 6 off before a crucial home matchup against Ole Miss, which lost its first game of the year on Saturday.

The Tigers entered the year expected to compete for a College Football Playoff spot, and that remains on the table, despite an early loss.

Given the level of expectation, here’s how our staff grades the Tigers after five games as they enter the bye week.

Tyler Nettuno, Managing Editor

Entering the season, my concerns about the Tigers centered pretty much entirely around the defense. While the offense lost quite a bit of talent, including a Heisman-winning quarterback in [autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag], I expected [autotag]Garrett Nussmeier[/autotag] to lead another productive unit. That has mostly been the case, even if the offense lacks explosion at times, and while the defense remains the Achilles heel, it does seem to have progressed at least somewhat from 2023, particularly when it comes to the front seven (though that unit is pretty banged up already). The early loss was disappointing, but the Tigers have mostly met expectations so far.

Grade: B

Will Rosenblatt, Staff Writer

The USC loss was a tough way to open the year, but LSU remains in the playoff hunt after four straight wins. The Tigers get a bye before a conference showdown with Ole Miss. Next weekā€™s game should tell us a lot about this LSU team. This is a chance to get a signature win at home. A lot of the questions that were there at the start of the year remain there now. The defense is improving, but far from perfect. Injuries to [autotag]Jacobian Guillory[/autotag] and [autotag]Harold Perkins Jr.[/autotag] have put a strain on the front seven and LSU is still figuring out how to best use its young secondary. The defense should continue to get better, but we donā€™t know if the progress will be fast enough. On offense, LSU continues to roll. Garrett Nussmeier looks impressive throwing to a deep group of pass catchers. But the offense will have to take it up another notch if LSU wants to make the playoff.

Grade: B+

Kyle Richardson, Staff Writer

This team leaves a lot of “meat on the bone.” So to speak. The Tigers are still struggling to run the ball, although [autotag]Caden Durham[/autotag] was a breath of fresh air last week. The defense is still nowhere near the level it needs to be if LSU wants to be one of the top SEC teams. The injuries are beginning to pile up as well. I believe this team has not reached its potential yet. 4-1 is a solid record, but it should be 5-0. Now, the Tigers get a bye week before welcoming Lane Kiffin into Baton Rouge. A win in this game may help propel this team to the next level.

Grade: C+

Brian Kelly explains how LSU is adjusting its secondary rotation

LSU is shuffling its secondary again in the bye week.

LSU experimented with its secondary throughout the first five weeks of the year. [autotag]Sage Ryan[/autotag] began the year at corner before moving to safety. [autotag]Major Burns[/autotag] played the STAR spot until LSU wanted three linebackers on the field, pushing Burns to safety.

During the bye week, LSU is continuing to shuffle some pieces. [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] said [autotag]Javien Toviano[/autotag] is going to play STAR the rest of the way. This should bring some stability after Toviano’s bounced around from corner to safety to nickel since arriving at LSU.

Kelly said LSU coaches think Toviano is better close to the line of scrimmage. Toviano at STAR puts him in a position to be athletic and make plays. With Toviano at STAR, LSU has the flexibility to play Burns at safety again.

Toviano was a blue-chip recruit in 2023 and played as a true freshman last year, but he’s yet to see much action in 2024. If Toviano settles in at STAR, more playing time could be in the fold.

Overall, LSU’s secondary is playing better than it did to start 2023, but the Tigers still rank 111th nationally, allowing 8.1 yards per pass. LSU’s next test is Ole Miss, which gave LSU plenty of trouble through the air last year.

Grading LSU’s special teams in 2024 after Week 5

LSU special teams under Brian Kelly are a mixed bag. How is the 2024 unit?

Special teams were an issue in Brian Kelly’s first year at LSU. 2022 was filled with blunders in the third phase of the game and the Tigers finished the year ranked 92nd in special teams. The result led to staff changes, including the exit of special teams coordinator [autotag]Brian Polian[/autotag].

In 2023, LSU took a committee coaching approach to its special teams. LSU finished the season ranking 82nd in the SP+ special teams metric. This is an improvement from 2022, but not where LSU aims to be.

2024 has come with another jump for the special teams unit, with the Tigers up to 59th in SP+ special teams. If this continues, it’ll be LSU’s first above-average special teams unit under [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag].

LSU’s strong kick return unit is the place to start. Returner [autotag]Zavion Thomas[/autotag] leads the SEC in kick return yards with 242 and the Tigers rank above average nationally in FEI’s kick return efficiency.

Thomas’ special teams impact was a big factor in LSU’s decision to recruit him out of the portal and it’s making a difference so far.

On the other side, LSU’s fared well with kickoffs too. Kickoff specialist [autotag]Aeron Burrell[/autotag] has kicked off 25 times and 24 have been touchbacks. That’ll do.

An area of concern entering the year was the punt team. It remains a concern five games in. Punter Peyton Todd’s punting grade ranks last among qualified SEC punters, according to PFF. [autotag]Blake Ochsendorf[/autotag] hasn’t proven to be that effective either, but he has a small sample size with just three punts on the year.

Hopefully for LSU, an effective offense will limit the punt team’s exposure, but if LSU gets in a field position battle, questions arise about LSU’s ability to compete.

The most obvious aspect of any special teams unit is the kicker. [autotag]Damian Ramos[/autotag] is in his third year with the Tigers and continues to provide a competent presence there. Ramos is 5/6 on the year and is yet to miss an extra point. Just one of those field goals was for 40+ yards, but it was a make.

After the last two years, it’s hard to complain about LSU’s special teams unit. Outside of the punt team, this can be one of the stronger groups in the SEC.

Garrett Nussmeier enters top 10 of CBS Sports college football quarterback power rankings

Garrett Nussmeier continues to impress in his first year as a starter.

CBS Sports has recently updated its list of the top 10 quarterbacks in college football as LSU heads into a bye week this week before playing against Ole Miss next weekend.

[autotag]Garrett Nussmeier[/autotag] has put up some great numbers through five games this season, and he’s now entering the top 10 at No. 6. He has thrown for 1,652 yards, 15 touchdowns, and four interceptions with a 70% completion percentage.

In his first season starting for the Tigers, Nussmeier has led the Tigers to a strong 4-1 start as he looks to help lead the Tigers to their third-straight 10-win season. With those numbers, how does he compare to the rest of the country? Here is what CBS Sports had to say.

“We still have a while to wait, but I’m excited to follow Nussmeier’s draft stock in the spring. He has a ridiculous arm, but he sometimes trusts it a little too much. That is why he ends up with stat lines like last week (409 yards, 4 TDs, 2 INTs vs. South Alabama). There isn’t a lot of chill to this young man’s game.”

Nussmeier has the ability to take these Tigers as far as they can possibly go.
