Brian Johnson will not return as Eagles offensive coordinator

Brian Johnson will not be returning to Philadelphia as the Eagles offensive coordinator according to Jeff McLane, who confirmed a Monday report from Derrick Gunn

The Brian Johnson era is over in Philadelphia, as Derrick Gunn initially reported that the Eagles’ embattled offensive coordinator won’t return to that position in 2024.

On Tuesday morning, Jeff McLane of The Inquirer confirmed the report, stating that Nick Sirianni will now replace both coordinators on offense and defense.

Johnson replaced former offensive coordinator Shane Steichen, who became the head coach in Indianapolis after two seasons as the Eagles’ play-caller.

Johnson had been the Eagles’ quarterbacks coach for those two seasons before being promoted last offseason and was replaced by his former assistant QBs coach, Alex Tanney.

Before joining the Eagles, Johnson was the offensive coordinator at Florida in 2020 and was previously their quarterbacks coach. Before that, he worked at Houston, Mississippi State and Utah.

7 realistic OC candidates the Eagles can target after parting ways with Brian Johnson

We’re looking at seven realistic candidates who could replace Brian Johnson as Offensive Coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles

After a late-season meltdown that saw the Eagles go 1-6 in their final seven games, including the playoffs, the head coach is on the hot seat, and his assistant coaches are all expected to depart.

Philadelphia’s third-year head coach has far exceeded expectations, but it’s clear that Johnson Gannon and Shane Steichen played far more significant roles than we thought.

The Inquirer’s Jeff McLane reports that offensive coordinator Brian Johnson, 36, won’t return after one season as the player-caller that saw him oversee the NFL’s No. 8-ranked unit but struggling to get consistent results during a late-season slide that included a blowout playoff loss to the Buccaneers.

Johnson recently interviewed for two different head coaching jobs — with the Falcons and Titans — but is expected to leave the Eagles regardless, per Derrick Gunn, likely landing “elsewhere in some offensive capacity.”

With things starting to heat up, we’re looking at seven realistic options for an offensive coordinator.

Report: Panthers no longer expected to interview Eagles OC Brian Johnson for HC job

Per The Athletic, the Panthers are no longer expected to interview Eagles OC Brian Johnson for their HC opening.

The Carolina Panthers’ hunt for a new head coach may have maxed out at 11 candidates.

According to Joe Person of The Athletic, the organization appears to have “quietly moved on” from Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Brian Johnson—who was reportedly expected to interview for the opening. Person, in his column from Monday morning, writes that the Panthers are now unlikely to speak with the 36-year-old play-caller as they move on to the second stage of their search.

The Barrett Station, Texas native spent 11 years in the college ranks as an offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. He picked up stops at the University of Utah, Mississippi State University, the University of Houston and the University of Florida before eventually jumping to the pros.

Johnson got his start on the NFL sidelines as the quarterbacks coach for the Eagles in 2021. He was then promoted to offensive coordinator following the team’s NFC championship run in 2022.

In Johnson’s first season with the reins, the Eagles averaged the eighth-most yards per game (354.4). His work with quarterback Jalen Hurts is also of note—as the fourth-year passer completed nearly 66 percent of his throws for 7,559 yards, 45 touchdowns and 21 interceptions over the past two seasons.

Titans completed 2 more head coach interviews on Friday

The Titans completed two more head coach interviews on Friday.

The Tennessee Titans continued going through their list of head coach interviews on Friday, with the team completing two.

The team announced it has completed interviews with both Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Brian Johnson and Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn.

It was previously reported by ESPN’s Dan Graziano that Glenn is considered “a strong candidate” for Tennessee’s vacancy. Graziano also predicted that Glenn would get the job.

With those two interviews in the books, the Titans now have two candidates they have yet to speak to: former Stanford head coach David Shaw and Detroit offensive coordinator Ben Johnson.

While there has yet to be an interview scheduled with Johnson, we do know Shawn is reportedly expected to get his this weekend.

The list of completed interviews are as follows:

  1. Raiders HC Antonio Pierce
  2. Bengals OC Brian Callahan
  3. Ravens DC Mike Macdonald
  4. Texans OC Bobby Slowik
  5. Giants OC Mike Kafka
  6. Cowboys DC Dan Quinn
  7. Panthers OC Thomas Brown
  8. Eagles OC Brian Johnson
  9. Lions DC Aaron Glenn

Pierce’s name has since been taken out of the running after he was hired for the Raiders’ full-time position. Callahan is the only candidate who has been asked for a second interview thus far.

There’s quite a lot to keep track of right now if you’re involved with the Carolina Panthers, who are currently in the middle of their second head-coaching hunt in as many offseasons. So, we’ll try to simplify the search.

Titans set for interview with Brian Johnson for head coach job

The Titans are reportedly set to interview Eagles offensive coordinator Brian Johnson for their head coach job.

The Tennessee Titans are reportedly set to interview Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Brian Johnson for their head coaching vacancy.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Titans and Johnson will speak about the job on Friday.

Johnson took the job as Eagles offensive coordinator in 2023 and had the tough task of replacing Shane Steichen after he took the job with the Indianapolis Colts.

It’s safe to say Johnson failed at that task after the Eagles regressed offensively.

Granted, Philly had no shortage of internal issues and there’s no question quarterback Jalen Hurts struggled, but Johnson’s play-calling left me scratching my head on several occasions this season.

It also looks like Johnson isn’t long for Philly, as the Eagles are reportedly exploring coordinator options.

With Johnson set to interview, the Titans have just one candidate who they requested an interview with but have not set something up with: Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson.

To keep up to date with all of the latest news on the Titans’ search to replace Mike Vrabel, follow along with our head coach interview tracker, which will be updated regularly.

Falcons complete interview with Eagles OC Brian Johnson

The Falcons completed an interview with Eagles offensive coordinator Brian Johnson on Thursday, the team announced

The Atlanta Falcons completed an interview with Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Brian Johnson for their head coach vacancy on Thursday, the team announced. Johnson is the eighth candidate the Falcons have spoken with thus far.

The 36-year-old served as Philadelphia’s quarterbacks coach from 2021-2022 before replacing Shane Steichen as offensive coordinator in 2023.

Johnson was a former college quarterback at Utah but went undrafted in 2009. The Falcons have talked to more experienced head coaches but an offensive specialist would make some sense considering the state of the team.

Atlanta has spoken with eight head coaches thus far, including Bill Belichick, Jim Harbaugh, Steve Wilks and Anthony Weaver. Stay up to date with each interview and interview request using our Falcons head coach tracker.

Falcons interviewed Eagles’ OC Brian Johnson for vacant head coaching position

The Atlanta Falcons are set to interview Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Brian Johnson for their vacant head coaching job

It’s currently unknown if Brian Johnson will return to Philadelphia as the Eagle’s offensive coordinator, but he’s certainly racking up the head coaching interview.

The Panthers and Titans had previously expressed interest in Johnson, and Adam Schefter is reporting that the former Utah quarterback will interview with the Atlanta Falcons.

Atlanta is said to have a second interview scheduled with former Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, and the interview with Johnson could be just a way to comply with the NFL’s Rooney Rule.

Johnson is in his third season with the Eagles and was promoted to offensive coordinator following the 2022 campaign when Philadelphia finished 14-3 en route to a Super Bowl LVII appearance.

Before being named offensive coordinator, Johnson was the Eagles quarterbacks coach from 2021-22, playing a crucial role in the development of Jalen Hurts, who posted the second-highest winning percentage (.733, 22-8) among NFL quarterbacks in that span, trailing only Patrick Mahomes (.765, 26-8).

Eagles GM Howie Roseman, HC Nick Sirianni reaching out to coordinator candidates

After finishing their exit meeting, Eagles GM Howie Roseman and head coach Nick Sirianni have begun reaching out to potential coordinator candidates

It appears that Nick Sirianni will be safe and keep his job as head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles after meeting with owner Jeffrey Lurie and GM Howie Roseman.

The same can’t be said for his assistants on both sides of the football.

Dianna Russini reports that Roseman and Sirianni have contacted potential coordinator candidates on the offensive and defensive sides.

Sirianni gets much credit for the Eagles’ success over the past three seasons.

Still, after a late-season meltdown that saw the Eagles go 1-6 in their final seven games, including the playoffs, the head coach and his assistant coaches expected were on the hot seat.

Philadelphia’s third-year head coach has far exceeded expectations, but it’s clear that Gannon and Steichen played far more prominent roles than we thought.

We previewed potential offensive coordinator and defensive coordinator candidates, and as the process began, the dominoes started to fall.
