How 49ers QB coach Brian Griese is helping Trey Lance and 49ers QBs

New QB coach Brian Griese might be the most significant offseason addition for the #49ers.

Trey Lance figures to be the 49ers’ starting quarterback in 2022. It’ll be his first season as a full-time starter after getting the starting nod just twice during his rookie campaign last year. While he transitions to that new role, he’ll be doing so with a new quarterbacks coach – Brian Griese. It’ll be Griese’s first time coaching, and his earliest lessons for Lance and the 49ers quarterbacks have nothing to do with the playbook or reading defenses.

Griese spoke with Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle and detailed his path to the 49ers QB coaching gig and why he took on the project.

What stuck out though was the early foundation Griese aimed to lay with Lance, Nate Sudfeld and Brock Purdy. That foundation has little to do with what goes on between the lines.

“Some of the things we talked about were to be part of something bigger than yourself. Humility,” Griese said via the SF Chronicle. “To make your family proud with how you operate every single day. To compete and win. Those things are not negotiable. To be a lifelong learner. To grow. To get out of your comfort zone.”

Griese’s insights are fascinating, but finding that ground off the field to stand on might be one of the biggest keys for Lance in his first year as a starter. It’s all but certain that Lance will go through some growing pains. Every quarterback does, much less one that started just 17 games and threw 318 passes in college.

Learning early on how to deal with those highs and lows may be a significant difference maker for Lance’s development during his rookie campaign. How he fends off the adversity that arises from a bad throw or a bad series will ultimately determine just how successful he is in the NFL.

Griese may be a first-time coach, but he’s been through the wringer as a starting NFL quarterback. If his early tutelage is helpful, he may just be one of the 49ers’ biggest offseason additions.

49ers QB coach hasn’t spoken to Jimmy Garoppolo

More evidence the #49ers’ relationship with Jimmy Garoppolo is over:

The latest indicator that Jimmy Garoppolo’s time with the 49ers is winding down despite the club’s inability to trade him came from new quarterbacks coach Brian Griese.

Griese on Wednesday told reporters he’s working with the three QBs in the building including Trey Lance, Nate Sudfeld and Brock Purdy, but hasn’t had any contact with Garoppolo according to NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco.

Garoppolo is still under contract with the 49ers and the team’s inability to trade him, combined with their insistence they won’t trade him for nothing has led to some speculation they intend on keeping him on the roster this year.

However, between head coach Kyle Shanahan saying the team still intends on trading Garoppolo, and the new QB coach doing zero work with him, it’s hard to believe San Francisco will bring the injured signal caller back into the fold during the regular season.

Perhaps something changes as training camp draws closer, but all signs are pointing to the 49ers-Garoppolo relationship ending regardless of what his trade market looks like once he’s healthy enough to throw.

The time Tom Brady got locked in Notre Dame Stadium

So did @TomBrady ever pay @ndfootball back for that ladder?

Long before Tom Brady became the GOAT, he was competing for a starting quarterback spot at Michigan.  After the Wolverines split a national title with Nebraska in 1997, Brady entered his junior year set to replace Brian Griese in the starting spot.

It just so happened that roughly a month before Brady and Michigan were to open the 1998 season at Notre Dame, Brady was driving back to Ann Arbor from Chicago when he saw a sign for South Bend.  What followed next was the future football legend having to escape Notre Dame Stadium.

Brady shared the story almost two-decades ago with NFL Films but it recently started to again make the rounds thanks to Tim Prister of Irish Illustrated.

So here is how the greatest quarterback the NFL has ever seen (this isn’t open to debate) got locked in Notre Dame Stadium.

Brian Griese leaving ESPN, returning to NFL as a coach

Former Broncos QB Brian Griese is leaving ESPN to become the 49ers’ new quarterbacks coach.

Brian Griese is leaving ESPN to become the San Francisco 49ers’ new quarterbacks coach, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Griese has worked for the Worldwide Leader in Sports since 2009, primarily covering college football. Two years ago, he became a color commentator for “Monday Night Football” on ESPN. Griese also spent time calling Denver Broncos preseason games for KUSA-TV.

The former quarterback played college football at Michigan before being selected by the Broncos in the third round of the 1998 NFL draft. After John Elway retired, Griese started 51 games in Denver, earning a Pro Bowl nod in 2000.

The Broncos released Griese in 2002 and he went on to spend time with the Miami Dolphins, Chicago Bears and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The 46-year-old QB-turned-commentator will now return to the NFL as a coach.

ESPN is expected to replace Griese in the broadcast booth with former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman. In related TV commentator news, ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit is expected to join Amazon’s “Thursday Night Football” broadcast team.

NFL free agency is heating up on and off the field.

Brian Griese leaving ESPN for NFL assistant job

Another #Michigan Man coaching in the league! #GoBlue

Once upon a time, a former Michigan football quarterback coached the San Francisco 49ers. While not as the head coach, another will coach in Santa Clara, but not as the head coach.

Yes, we obviously know about Jim Harbaugh and his tenure with the team by the bay, but the man who helmed the Wolverines a decade after Harbaugh is about to get his coaching start.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, former Wolverines QB and ESPN analyst Brian Griese is stepping down from the broadcast booth in order to coach quarterbacks with the 49ers, coaching under head coach Kyle Shanahan.

Griese famously went from a walk-on to leading the maize and blue to the 1997 national championship. He played several years in the NFL, most notably for the Denver Broncos, before becoming a color commentator in college football, working alongside play-by-play man Steve Levy.

49ers to add Brian Griese as QB coach

The #49ers are adding Brian Griese as their QB coach, which is something.

The 49ers are adding a high-profile name to their coaching staff. Former NFL QB Brian Griese is set to join San Francisco as their quarterbacks coach. ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Seth Wickersham were the first to report the move.

Griese will exit the ESPN Monday Night Football booth to take his first ever coaching job.

Prior to becoming a broadcaster in 2009, Griese was an 11-year NFL veteran who started 83 games for the Broncos, Dolphins, Buccaneers and Bears. He completed 62.7 percent of his throws for 19,440 yards with 119 touchdowns and 99 interceptions.

While Griese has yet to coach at even the college level, there’s some familiarity with him and 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan. Griese’s first stint in Tampa Bay came in 2004 and 2005 when Shanahan was there as an offensive quality control coach.

The 49ers lost quarterbacks coach Rich Scangarello this offseason when he took on the offensive coordinator job at the University of Kentucky.

There’s some risk here with San Francisco in bringing in an unseasoned QB coach for first-year starter Trey Lance. Griese will play a key role in Lance’s development and acclimation to the starting job.

Brian Griese leaving ‘Monday Night Football’ to become 49ers QB coach

Brian Griese is leaving the broadcast booth to become QB Coach of the San Francisco 49ers

A domino has fallen in what seems to be leading to Troy Aikman becoming the analyst — officially — on “Monday Night Football.”

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Friday that his colleague, Brian Griese, is leaving the “MNF” booth to become Quarterbacks Coach for the San Francisco 49ers.

The news comes as the picture of the “Monday Night Football” booth in 2022 is uncertain.

Aikman is headed to ABC/ESPN on a five-year, $90 million deal, according to numerous reports over recent weeks,

Where that leaves the rest of the “MNF” booth — Steve Levy and Louis Riddick — is a mystery.

FOX Sports’ Joe Buck said he doesn’t know what the future holds for him

“I don’t know where I’m going to be next year,” Buck said on the latest episode of his “Daddy Issues” podcast. “I know Troy’s gone — he’s now at ESPN. I’m kind of in limbo. I’ve got another year under contract at Fox. They have expressed interest in keeping me. They also know that was a big partnership that I had with Troy.”

Former NFL QB, Super Bowl champ on ‘undervalued’ Renfrow

Hunter Renfrow made his first career Pro Bowl apperance on Sunday and made his presence known in the NFL all-star game at the Las Vegas Raiders’ Allegiant Stadium.

The Raiders’ third-year receiver and former Clemson star put a bow on what was a breakout campaign for him, making a nice toe-tap grab in the back of the end zone for a 6-yard touchdown reception from New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones in the third quarter.

However, despite Renfrow’s big season and his Pro Bowl recognition, former NFL quarterback and Super Bowl champion Brian Griese still believes Renfrow is not appreciated highly enough and expressed that sentiment Sunday while serving as a color commentator for ESPN’s broadcast of the Pro Bowl.

“You want to talk about undervalued players — Hunter Renfrow is another one,” said Griese, who played 11 years in the NFL (1998-2009) with the Denver Broncos, Miami Dolphins, Chicago Bears and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and earned a Super Bowl ring with Denver when the Broncos won Super Bowl XXXIII.

“We talked about (Baltimore Ravens tight end) Mark Andrews. Hunter Renfrow caught (80.5) percent of his targets this year. He had 33 catches on third down — like the money down, the big-time down. He was as clutch as it gets for the Raiders.”

Renfrow finished the 2021 season with 103 receptions on 128 targets for 1,038 yards and nine touchdown receptions — all career highs. He became the first Raiders receiver to record over 1,000 receiving yards in a season since 2016 and became just the third player in franchise history to record 100-plus receptions in a single season.

Studs and duds from Bears’ prime-time loss to Vikings

Despite the Bears’ disappointing loss to the Vikings, there were some players who stood out in a good way.

It was another prime-time dud for the Chicago Bears this season as they fell to their division rivals the Minnesota Vikings 17-9, dropping to 4-10 on the season. The Bears have now lost all four of their prime-time games this season and clinch their first double-digit loss season since 2017.

Offensively, the Bears were able to move the ball fairly well against the Vikings, but stalled multiple times due to turnovers and failing to convert on fourth downs.

The defense, however, did their part and kept them in the game all night long. They limited the Vikings to under 20 points and under 200 yards, bottling up their running game especially. But costly penalties led to points, putting this game out of reach.

The Bears were without many of their key players and relied on quite a few practice squad guys to fill the void. Did any of them standout as studs? Here are this week’s studs and duds.
