ESPN replaces Steve Levy with Chris Fowler on Week 2 Saints-Panthers MNF broadcast

ESPN is replacing Steve Levy with Chris Fowler on their Monday Night Football broadcast for Week 2’s Saints-Panthers game:

There’s another changeup coming for ESPN’s “Monday Night Football” broadcast this season, and New Orleans Saints fans will get a first look at it in their team’s Week 2 matchup against the Carolina Panthers. ESPN is bringing back analysts Dan Orlovsky and Louis Riddick for their Monday night B-team, but they’re replacing Steve Levy with Chris Fowler. The Athletic’s Richard Deitsch first reported news of the switch.

The flagship network made a splashy move last year by poaching both Joe Buck and Troy Aikman from FOX Sports, and they’ll continue to be the A-team on most Monday nights (they’re also handling the Browns-Steelers game in Week 2, which kicks off after the Saints and Panthers). But there are three double-headers on this year’s NFL schedule, so we’ll be seeing a lot of Fowler, Orlovsky, and Riddick on those broadcasts.

But we’re getting ahead of ourselves. What about Week 1? The Saints will open their season at the Caesars Superdome on Sept. 10 against the Tennessee Titans, with Chris Lewis, Jason McCourty, Ross Tucker, and Amanda Guerra on the call for CBS Sports.

Chris Fowler replacing Steve Levy in ESPN’s No. 2 Monday Night Football booth

Chris Fowler will take Steve Levy’s place on ESPN’s second MNF squad

Another year, another change in the NFL booth for ESPN.

After Joe Buck and Troy Aikman came on board in 2022, Chris Fowler will now replace Steve Levy on the second team, per a New York Post report   Tuesday.

Levy had been previously been bumped from the lead play-by-play voice when Buck came over from FOX Sports.

Fowler is the lead play-by-play person on ESPN’s college football broadcasts.

Per the report:

Levy has been a good soldier throughout his MNF experience, though he wasn’t put in the best position to succeed. During his first year, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, games were played with no fans in the stands and no in-person meetings with his booth partners, Riddick and Brian Griese.

That trio received one more year together under normal circumstances before Buck and Aikman were brought in last year. Aikman signed a five-year, $90 million deal, while Buck was for five years and $75 million.

Last season, after Griese left to become the 49ers’ quarterbacks coach, ESPN put Orlovsky in his place on the second MNF team with Riddick and Levy.

Broncos Super Bowl 50 champion Ryan Harris to call team’s preseason games

Ryan Harris will join Steve Levy and Chad Brown in the broadcast booth to call Broncos preseason games on 9News this month.

Brian Griese left the broadcast booth this year to join the San Francisco 49ers as a quarterbacks coach, leaving 9News to look for a replacement to call Denver Broncos preseason games alongside Steve Levy.

9News announced earlier this week that Levy (play-by-play) will return to call Broncos games this summer, as will Chad Brown (color analyst) and Rod Mackey (sideline reporter).

The television network also announced a new addition to the commentary crew: Ryan Harris will join Levy and Brown in the both as a color analyst for the team’s three preseason games, replacing Griese.

Harris had a 10-year career as an offensive lineman in the NFL, including three stints in Denver (2007-2010, 2012 and 2015). Harris started at right tackle for the Broncos when they won Super Bowl 50, defeating the Carolina Panthers 24-10.

In addition to airing locally on 9News, all three of Denver’s preseason games will also be nationally televised on NFL Network this month.

ESPN announces commentators for Broncos’ game vs. Jaguars in London

The Broncos’ game against the Jaguars will stream exclusively on ESPN+ in Week 8.

ESPN announced earlier this week that Steve Levy (play-by-play), Louis Riddick (analyst), Dan Orlovsky (analyst) and Laura Rutledge (sideline reporter) will call the game between the Denver Broncos and Jacksonville Jaguars in London this season.

The game will be exclusively streamed on ESPN+ on Sunday, Oct. 30 in Week 8. The Broncos-Jags showdown is scheduled to begin at 7:30 a.m. MT to accommodate a European audience at Wembley Stadium.

It will mark the first time an NFL game has ever been broadcast exclusively on ESPN+, but Levy will be a familiar commentator for fans in Denver. Levy previously called Broncos preseason games with Brian Griese, who left ESPN in March to become the Miami Dolphins’ new quarterbacks coach.

In addition to Denver-Jacksonsille game, Levy, Riddick, Orlovsky and Rutledge will also serve as commentators when ESPN has Monday Night Football doubleheaders in Weeks 2 and 18 this season.

The Broncos will open the season on MNF against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 1. Troy Aikman and Joe Buck will call that game for ESPN.

Commentary team announced for Jags’ international matchup vs. Broncos

Steve Levy (play-by-play), Louis Riddick and Dan Orlovsky (analysts), and Laura Rutledge (reporter) have been assigned to the Jags’ Week 8 game in London on ESPN+.

The date and details for the Jacksonville Jaguars’ international game against the Denver Broncos was announced in early May as the teams will battle on Sunday, Oct. 31, which takes place during Week 8’s series of games. We also learned that the game would be televised on ESPN+, the first-ever NFL game aired on the streaming network.

Now, the details for the commentary team have come out, and ESPN will have Steve Levy (play-by-play), Louis Riddick and Dan Orlovsky (analysts), and Laura Rutledge (reporter) assigned to the international battle.

Of course, ESPN’s primary primetime team (a.k.a. the Monday Night Football crew) will consist of Joe Buck and Troy Aikman, who previously worked together calling games for FOX. They will join Lisa Salters, who will continue to handle sideline reporting duties, in the process.

Riddick and Levy aren’t foreign to calling games in the booth for ESPN, as both called their Monday Night Football games the past two seasons. Orlovsky also has experience in the booth, calling college football games for ESPN since 2018. Rutledge has reported during NFL games in the past on occasions and worked her first NFL game in 2018.

As for the Jags, they have a 4-4 record in their games in the United Kingdom. They will enter their Week 8 game against Denver with a record of .500 (7-7) when looking at their all-time series.

Brian Griese leaving ‘Monday Night Football’ to become 49ers QB coach

Brian Griese is leaving the broadcast booth to become QB Coach of the San Francisco 49ers

A domino has fallen in what seems to be leading to Troy Aikman becoming the analyst — officially — on “Monday Night Football.”

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Friday that his colleague, Brian Griese, is leaving the “MNF” booth to become Quarterbacks Coach for the San Francisco 49ers.

The news comes as the picture of the “Monday Night Football” booth in 2022 is uncertain.

Aikman is headed to ABC/ESPN on a five-year, $90 million deal, according to numerous reports over recent weeks,

Where that leaves the rest of the “MNF” booth — Steve Levy and Louis Riddick — is a mystery.

FOX Sports’ Joe Buck said he doesn’t know what the future holds for him

“I don’t know where I’m going to be next year,” Buck said on the latest episode of his “Daddy Issues” podcast. “I know Troy’s gone — he’s now at ESPN. I’m kind of in limbo. I’ve got another year under contract at Fox. They have expressed interest in keeping me. They also know that was a big partnership that I had with Troy.”

ESPN sticking with Steve Levy, Brian Griese and Louis Riddick for MNF booth

Steve Levy, Brian Griese and Louis Riddick will be back in the “Monday Night Football” booth, per a report

The first year was deemed a success so why mess with it? That would be the direction ESPN has chosen for its “Monday Night Football” booth.

Richard Deitsch of The Athletic with a Friday news drop of sorts saying Steve Levy, Brian Griese and Louis Riddick will return for a second season.

The trio was immensely better than the previous two seasons, which saw a disastrous rookie debut for Jason Witten, who return to the NFL after a major flop.

He had been teamed with Joe Tessitore and Booger McFarland. That duo got a second season and was just as bad.

That led to the change bringing in Levy, Griese, and Riddick. That trio may not be mentioned aside of Howard Cosell, Frank Gifford, and Don Meredith in the long run but they were a vast improvement from the previous voices.

What could be interesting in the future will be Levy’s direction. He is a big-time hockey guy and ESPN is back in the NHL business starting with the 2021-22 sason.

And, there is always the possibility Riddick will get a front-office job. He had numerous GM interviews this offseason.
