Around the North: Ravens up to four finalists for offensive coordinator gig

A divisional rival has been busy looking for their new offensive coordinator.

As we continue to follow news around the AFC North as well, the offensive coordinator search of the Baltimore Ravens is among the most interesting among divisional rivals. After the Ravens parted ways with Greg Roman, they have been quite busy looking for their new man to run the offense. Thus far, it looks like five names are among the coaches in contention.

While it was already reported that former Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator Todd Monken has received a second interview, so have two others as the pass game coordinator of the Minnesota Vikings, Brian Angelichio, and Dave Canales, who is the quarterbacks coach of the Seattle Seahawks, have also received second interviews. The former offensive coordinator of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Byron Leftwich, has also spoken to the Ravens about their vacancy.

There’s another hat in the ring for the Cowboys offensive coordinator position, and this one has Viking horns on it.

Minnesota tight ends coach and passing game coordinator Brian Angelichio reportedly met with the Cowboys on Thursday, according to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.

Angelichio, a 50-year-old New York native, joined the Vikings staff in 2022 after ten years on various NFL sidelines and 17 tears in the college ranks. With Kirk Cousins and Justin Jefferson leading the team’s air attack, the Vikings finished fifth in the league in passing yards and seventh in total yards and total points.

Angelichio has already interviewed with Baltimore for their OC position, and is reportedly set to meet with the Ravens a second time.

Prior to his stint in Minneapolis, Angelichio had been with Tampa Bay, Cleveland, Washington, and Carolina. He was also the tight ends coach under Mike McCarthy for his final three seasons in Green Bay.

Ravens request to interview Brian Angelichio for offensive coordinator

Angelichio is the third Vikings’ staffer to be requested for an interview this week

The Minnesota Vikings had an excellent offensive season and with a good season comes other teams wanting to bring in your coaches. According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Baltimore Ravens have requested permission to interview Vikings passing game coordinator Brian Angelichio for their offensive coordinator position.

Angelichio is the third Vikings assistant to be requested for an interview with Wes Phillips and Jerrod Johnson being asked by the Los Angeles Chargers earlier this week.

After being the Ravens’ offensive coordinator for five seasons, Greg Roman was relieved of his duties after the season. While they search for their next candidate, there doesn’t seem to be a direction for where they want to go with their offense.

Angelichio has been in coaching since 1996 and worked his way up from small schools in New York to the NFL where he got a chance with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2012. He has been a tight ends coach in all 11 seasons in the NFL with this past season being his first as the passing game coordinator.

In his career, Angelichio worked under both Mike Pettine with the Cleveland Browns in 2014 and 2015 along with Kevin O’Connell in 2019 with the Washington Commanders.

Brian Angelichio joining Vikings as pass game coordinator

Angelichio leaving the Panthers for the Vikings.

According to The Athletic’s Joe Person, former Carolina Panthers tight ends coach Brian Angelichio is trading blue for purple to join the coaching staff with the Minnesota Vikings.

Angelichio will resume his role as a tight ends coach in Minnesota, while also being bumped to the title of pass game coordinator.

He should have plenty of fun delving into an offense with Justin Jefferson, Adam Thielen, K.J. Osborn, Irv Smith Jr. and Dalvin Cook at the skilled positions. There are offensive weapons all over the place, and you can rest assured soon-to-be head coach Kevin O’Connell is going to want to make the most of them.

Angelichio has drifted from team to team working as a tight ends coach in both college and the NFL for the last 15 years. So this opportunity to step into the role as a pass game coordinator was long overdue.

The staff in Minnesota continues to come together while everyone waits for the official hiring of O’Connell as the new head coach.

Report: Panthers tight ends coach FaceTimes with Fresno State prospect

Report: Panthers tight ends coach FaceTimes with Fresno State prospect.

The Panthers appear to be focused on Day 3 prospects and potential undrafted free agents with regards to their video conference meetings in preparation for the 2020 NFL draft.

According to Justin Melo at Draft Wire, the team’s new tight ends coach Brian Angelichio had an 80-minute FaceTime meeting with Cameron Sutton from Fresno State.

Like TCU running back Sewo Olonilua and Northern Colorado quarterback Jacob Knipp, Sutton is another prospect who likely isn’t on many fans’ radar. He played in only 10 games over the last two seasons, totaling nine catches, 154 yards and no touchdowns.

Sutton was not invited to the combine, but he shared his athletic testing results on Twitter a week ago.

The Panthers likely see him primarily as a depth option at tight end. It’s not a deep draft class at this position, so there’s a good chance they will wait until after Day 3 is done to address it.
