Rams’ Brian Allen (thumb), David Edwards (concussion) both ruled out vs. Saints

The Rams will once again be missing 2 of their starting offensive linemen this week. Brian Allen and David Edwards are both ruled out.

Just when it seemed like the Rams’ offensive line was starting to get healthy with Brian Allen and Coleman Shelton returning, the group took two steps back. Sean McVay announced on Friday that both Allen and David Edwards have been ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Saints.

Allen had surgery on his thumb and also has some swelling in his knee, so he won’t play against New Orleans. The knee has bothered him most of the year, keeping him on the injury report the last 3 weeks since he returned.

Edwards was designated to return from IR this week after missing time with a concussion, but McVay said he suffered a setback and will not play on Sunday. That leaves the Rams without two of their three starting interior linemen – again.

McVay said the team is still deciding how the starting offensive line will look against the Saints. Oday Aboushi, Shelton and Bobby Evans are all likely to be in consideration to start. Matt Skura is also an option.

Sean McVay unsure if Brian Allen will play vs. Saints due to thumb and knee injuries

Brian Allen is dealing with thumb and knee injuries, putting his status for Week 11 in question

Brian Allen has displayed unquestionable toughness throughout his NFL career and he’s once again dealing with injuries this week as the Rams prepare to face the Saints. Allen was listed on the injury report Wednesday, not with a knee injury, but with a new thumb issue.

Sean McVay said after practice that Allen is still nursing a knee injury, and with his thumb also banged up, his status for Sunday’s game is uncertain.

Brian Allen did not participate. Had his thumb and his knee has obviously been an issue this year as well,” McVay said.

When asked if Allen will play this week, this was McVay’s response.

“I’m not sure on Brian. We’re kind of working through that. He’s battling, he’s doing everything that he can, but we’re taking it a day at a time,” he said.

Allen missed five games already this season due to a knee injury, sitting out Weeks 2-6. He returned in Week 8 after the bye and has played every snap since, but his knee is still bothering him; he’s been listed on the injury report each week, either missing practice or being limited some days.

If Allen can’t play this weekend, McVay said Coleman Shelton would move from guard to center, which he did earlier this year. That would leave another hole at guard after the team lost Chandler Brewer to a knee injury on Sunday.

Rams injury report: Matthew Stafford a full participant, Brian Allen DNP

Brian Allen was held out of practice Wednesday with a thumb injury, but Matthew Stafford was a full participant

There seems to be new names on the Rams’ injury report each and every week, with many of the players listed being starters. As the Rams prep for the Saints this weekend, they hit the field for their first practice of the week on Wednesday.

There were six names listed, including Matthew Stafford and John Wolford. Stafford was a full participant as he works his way back from a concussion, the first time he’s practiced fully since Week 9. Wolford missed practice with a neck injury.

Brian Allen is a player to watch after he missed practice with a thumb injury. His status for Week 11 is uncertain, Sean McVay said. Greg Gaines was limited after missing Week 10 with an elbow injury, while Travin Howard (hip) and A’Shawn Robinson (illness) missed practice.

The most notable names on the Saints’ injury report were Marcus Davenport, Mark Ingram, Cameron Jordan and Marshon Lattimore, who were all non-participants. Ryan Ramczyk was also held out due to an illness, as were Andrus Peat (triceps) and Pete Werner (ankle).

Cooper Kupp, Van Jefferson and Brian Allen expected to play vs. Bucs

Cooper Kupp, Van Jefferson and Brian Allen are all expected to be good to go for Sunday’s game against the Buccaneers

Cooper Kupp gave Rams fans a scare last week when he suffered an ankle injury late against the 49ers and was walking with a limp after the game, but it won’t cause him to miss any time. Sean McVay said Friday that Kupp is expected to play against the Buccaneers this weekend despite being limited in practice.

McVay also said Van Jefferson and Brian Allen are expected to play against Tampa Bay after also missing some time in practice. Jefferson is managing the knee injury that kept him out for six games, while Allen had some knee swelling coming out of Sunday’s loss.

Those were the most notable players on the injury report this week. Backup linebacker Jake Hummel suffered a groin injury in practice and has been ruled out.

McVay didn’t give an update on Ernest Jones or Greg Gaines, who were out sick Thursday.

5 Rams to watch in Week 9 vs. Buccaneers

The Rams will travel to take on the Buccaneers in Week 9 and we have 5 players to keep an eye on.

The Los Angeles Rams were blown out by the San Francisco 49ers in Week 8, giving them a 3-4 record entering Week 9. The Rams will want to get back in the win column in a showdown with Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.

Since Brady has arrived in Tampa Bay, the Rams have gone 3-0 against the Buccaneers. The last matchup between these two teams came in the NFC divisional round of the playoffs a season, where Los Angeles secured a 30-27 win on a game-winning field goal by Matt Gay.

With both teams desperately needing a win, here are five players to watch on the Rams in their Week 9 showdown with the Buccaneers.

Liam Coen: Getting Brian Allen back is huge for communication

Liam Coen believes Brian Allen’s return for the Rams should drastically improve the communication on the OL.

The Los Angeles Rams have dealt with a bevy of injuries on the offensive line, but Brian Allen is slated to return in Week 8 versus the San Francisco 49ers. With Allen starting for the first time since Week 1 at the center position, Liam Coen is glad to get him back to help improve the communication on the offensive line.

“Yeah, that helps. Getting B.A. back is a huge win for us just from a communication standpoint. Just being able to play, get these guys all on the same page, the comfort level that he has with Matthew (Stafford) and our other players is huge,” Coen said. “So, I wouldn’t really necessarily say there’s a huge scheme change just because we have one player back in the mix. I think that really helps our communication, which is where a lot of the issues did lie, like we talked about last time we were in here. And I thought that those things improved, against Carolina and now, ‘Hey let’s continue to take the next step forward getting B.A. back in the mix, a little bit more consistency up front, which we haven’t had.’ But I think that’ll help for sure.”

Allen suffered a knee injury in Week 1 and underwent surgery, causing him to miss five games for the Rams. The offensive line has since undergone plenty of alterations due to injuries and there have been plenty of communication issues as a result.

Besides getting one of their starters back, the Rams are getting a center that Matthew Stafford is accustomed to having, and someone that has a good sense of being able to get everyone on the same page in the trenches. Allen started in 20 of the 21 possible games last season (including the playoffs), earning him a new extension in the offseason.

Ahead of a pivotal matchup with a talented defensive line of the 49ers, Coen — and likely Stafford — are glad to have Allen back on the field.

Brian Allen perfectly describes how it felt watching Rams’ O-line struggle with injuries

Brian Allen shared how hard it was to watch the Rams’ O-line get decimated by injuries, comparing it to a brother getting beat up

The Rams have only played six games this season but eight offensive linemen have already started at least one game. That’s strictly because of the injuries the team has suffered along the offensive line, with four of their five starters from Week 1 getting hurt at some point this season.

Brian Allen is among them, missing the last five games with a knee injury suffered in the season opener. He’s returning this week against the 49ers, taking back his place as the starting center – a spot where two other players have started in his absence.

Allen spoke with reporters on Wednesday and perfectly described how painful it was to watch the Rams’ O-line get ravaged by injuries, comparing it to watching a brother get beat up and not being able to do anything about it.

Along with Allen, Coleman Shelton, David Edwards, Tremayne Anchrum Jr. and now Joe Noteboom have all missed time with injuries. Logan Bruss also tore his ACL before the season even began.

Anchrum, Noteboom and Bruss are all out for the year, but Shelton and Edwards could return at some point down the line. Shelton’s timetable was 4-6 weeks after getting hurt in Week 4, so he has some time to go. Edwards suffered two concussions and it’s unclear when he’ll be back.

In Week 8 against the 49ers, it could be Alaric Jackson, Bobby Evans, Allen, Oday Aboushi and Rob Havenstein starting up front.

Sean McVay gives injury updates on Brian Allen and Kyren Williams ahead of Week 8

Sean McVay shared injury updates for Brian Allen and Kyren Williams on Monday ahead of a Week 8 rematch with the 49ers.

The Los Angeles Rams have dealt with a plethora of injuries this season, but they are getting healthier entering Week 8. Sean McVay revealed on Monday that Brian Allen is going to return this week and Kyren Williams is close to having his 21-day return window begin.

Allen has been sidelined since Week 1 with a knee injury that required him to undergo surgery. Amid Allen’s absence, the Rams have deployed Coleman Shelton, Jeremiah Kolone, and Matt Skura at the center position with Shelton also suffering an injury that has forced him to miss time.

The return of Allen is crucial with the offensive line struggling with communication for weeks. Besides the update on Allen, McVay shared that the Rams are likely a week away from having Williams begin his 21-day return window.

The Rams are looking to trade Cam Akers and Darrell Henderson hasn’t consistently produced at the running back position this season. There were also reports in Week 1 that McVay had big plans for Williams to begin the season, but he sadly sustained a high-ankle sprain that has sidelined him for the previous five games.

With the lack of a running game, the Rams could still look to acquire a running back via trade after being outbid for Christian McCaffrey by the San Francisco 49ers. On the other hand, the rookie out of Notre Dame is expected to see a decent-sized role once he’s healthy enough to see the field again.

Rams expect Van Jefferson, 4 others to return in Week 8

The Rams are getting reinforcements back just in time for the second half of the season

For a team that seems to suffer injuries each and every week, the Los Angeles Rams are hitting their bye at the perfect time. During the week off, the Rams are expected to get much healthier for the second half of the season.

Sean McVay told reporters on Monday that the Rams plan to have Brian Allen, Van Jefferson, Troy Hill, Cobie Durant and Bobby Brown all back after the Week 7 bye, just in time for their next game against the 49ers on Oct. 30.

Allen has been out since getting hurt in Week 1, Jefferson has yet to play a game, and Brown has been suspended. Hill and Durant have missed multiple games due to injury, as well.

Jefferson and Hill are the only two players on injured reserve, so they’ll need to be activated. Allen and Durant have remained on the 53-man roster so it’s just a matter of them getting healthy.

McVay also said the team could begin discussing Kyren Williams returning from injured reserve after the bye, though he’ll need to be designated to return first. After doing so, he’ll have 21 days to be activated, during which he can practice.

The Rams would love to be better than 3-3 right now, but they’re getting healthy and should improve after the bye. Reinforcements are thankfully on the way for Los Angeles.

Rams C Brian Allen ruled out again for Week 6 vs. Panthers

Brian Allen will miss his 5th straight game this week due to a knee injury, but he’ll have time to recover during next week’s bye

For the fifth week in a row, the Los Angeles Rams will be without their starting center Brian Allen. Sean McVay told reporters on Wednesday that Allen will be out for Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers.

He suffered a knee injury in Week 1 and was originally expected to miss 2-4 weeks, but that timeline has unfortunately been stretched to at least five weeks. McVay didn’t say when Allen will return, but the Rams have a bye in Week 7, so the earliest he can be back is Week 8 against the 49ers on Oct. 30.

Had the Rams known he would’ve missed more than four games, they probably would’ve preferred to put him on injured reserve, thus opening up a roster spot. But there’s no sense in doing that now unless Allen is expected to miss another four games, which would be an even bigger problem.

With Coleman Shelton on injured reserve, the Rams will be on their third-string center again. That could be Jeremiah Kolone, or they could give veteran Matt Skura his first opportunity of the season after promoting him to the active roster.

The Rams need to figure something out because the current state of the offensive line is not good.
