Brett Phillips had a hilarious postgame response after giving up a home run to Mike Trout

Amazing.

While the no-hitter from Angels rookie pitcher Reid Detmers was undeniably the main story from Tuesday’s game in Anaheim, Brett Phillips found a way to make his eighth inning experience awfully interesting.

The Tampa Bay Rays outfielder entered the blowout game as a pitcher — just as he had done earlier this season — and proceeded to pitch like a person who had never thrown a baseball before. Back in April, he was able to get through two innings with his 55 mph heat, allowing four runs to the A’s. But Oakland does not have Mike Trout — the Angels do.

And well, it wasn’t a great idea to throw a batting practice pitch to Trout.

On the first pitch he saw from Phillips, Trout drove a middle-middle 54 mph meatball to that weird rock pile beyond center field. Despite Phillips’ demoralized on-field reaction, he was a great sport about the Trout homer.

He took to Twitter after the game and fired off a hilarious tweet to the Angels star.

Trout should have tried to do that from the left side. It worked for Anthony Rendon.

Fans loved how Phillips was able to laugh off the rough outing, though.

Brett Phillips dedicated his home run to a young superfan who is battling cancer

Baseball is just the best.

On Monday, Rays outfielder Brett Phillips had one of the funnier moments we’ll see this season when he entered the game as a pitcher and threw the ball like someone who had never picked up a baseball before. On Tuesday, he reminded everyone just how impactful baseball can really be.

Before the game, Phillips had the opportunity to meet Chloe Grimes — an 8-year-old Rays fan who is battling cancer for the second time. Phillips is Grimes’ favorite player, and he was the one who caught the ceremonial first pitch from Chloe before the game.

The moment was already special, but Phillips took it to a new level in the third inning. As Chloe was being interviewed for the Rays broadcast, Phillips hit a deep home run off the far right-field catwalk.

Just amazing.

After the game, Phillips found out that his home run took place during Chloe’s interview, and he couldn’t hold back the tears.

He said:

“Usually, I’m not at a loss for words, but I had the chance to meet Chloe for the first time, and she’s battling cancer and she brought me these gifts. She wrote my name on a softball. Chloe, you’re an inspiration. Like, holy cow. I think that’s the farthest ball — hardest ball I’ve hit in my career. And I’m praying for you guys. Just unbelievable what they’re going through. I hope I can meet Chloe again in the future. Just what an inspiration. The energy she brought. And she did — she gave me a wristband. It says, ‘Rally for Chloe. Our princess.’ Again, what an inspiration. I’m praying for you, Chloe. Your family. You’re really cool, and that homer was for you.”

Fans loved the moment too.

Troleó a Cristian Pache

From 46 MPH pitches to a web gem, outfielder Brett Phillips had a wild adventure pitching for the Rays

This is the best.

The last time Brett Phillips took the mound for the Tampa Bay Rays in a blowout, it was must-see TV in 2021 when he threw an inning against the Toronto Blue Jays.

And somehow, he gave up just one run.

But on Monday night, with the Rays down big to the Oakland A’s, it didn’t go as well. Yet it was one of the most fun things we’ve seen in this early MLB season, with the outfielder throwing slow pitches, jokingly trolling the opposition and making one incredible defensive play.

Let’s break down the whole thing, with a highlight reel worthy of watching multiple times:

Rays’ Brett Phillips narrowly beats tag at home plate for blistering inside-the-park home run

What incredible base running by Brett Phillips.

Brett Phillips is one fast man.

During Monday’s game between the Tampa Bay Rays and Baltimore Orioles, Phillips had one of the closest inside-the-park home runs you’ll ever see thanks to his stunning speed on the base paths. In the bottom of the sixth, Phillips clobbered the ball to left center field, splitting the Orioles outfielders and bouncing off the bottom of the wall.

Thanks to the ball’s ridiculous hang time and the fortuitous bounce off the wall, Phillips was well on his way to third by the time the Orioles recovered the ball. From there, Phillips’ speed carried him the rest of the way as Baltimore relayed the ball into the infield for the tag at home, which he beat in a bang-bang play at home plate.

Here’s how the incredible sequence of events went down.

Had the throw to home been a bit more in the direction of Phillips on the base path, there’s a real possibility the Orioles could have gotten him out. Instead, full props to Phillips here for his blistering speed around the bases to leg out an inside-the-park home run on pure skill, without any errors or mishaps on Baltimore’s side.

Just an incredibly well-executed and well-run at bat by Phillips.

Umpire hilariously misread the Rays’ Brett Phillips after he pretended to charge the mound

They’re friends!

Tampa Bay Rays outfielder Brett Phillips and Baltimore Orioles pitcher Jorge Lopez go way back. They spent time together in Milwaukee. They were traded to Kansas City together.

They’re friends.

And during Saturday’s game between the Rays and Orioles, the two got a chance to face each other. Just nobody seemed to verse home plate umpire Nick Mahrley on this long-spanning friendship because for a second, he thought he was going to have to break up a brawl.

In Phillips’ fourth-inning at-bat, he took an 0-1, 95 mph fastball to the back. Phillips immediately had words for Lopez and deked that he was going to charge the mound. Mahrley just couldn’t see that Phillips was laughing the whole time.

When Mahrley tried to intervene, Phillips had to explain that he’s friends with Lopez. He was just teasing a former teammate.

After the game, Phillips explained what he was thinking with the joke. He said via MLB.com:

“He was one of my favorite teammates. Obviously, he did not do that on purpose, and when I got hit, I was like, ‘You know what, I’m gonna have a little fun with this.’ So I immediately turned around. I was like, ‘You want to fight with me?’ And I said it with a smile on my face, but the umpire and the catcher couldn’t see I was laughing, so I was like, ‘No, no, no, no, no, no!’ I was like, ‘No, I’m just messing, this is my boy, this is my boy!’”

Mahrley will just have to look for the smile next time.

Patrick Mahomes, Tom Brady trade jabs over Salvador Perez-Brett Phillips Super Bowl LV bet

A friendly bet between former Royals teammates had Patrick Mahomes and Tom Brady trading jabs on Twitter.

A friendly bet between former Kansas City Royals teammates has Patrick Mahomes and Tom Brady exchanging jabs on social media.

Former Royals outfielder Brett Phillips was traded to the Tampa Bay Rays during the 2020 MLB season. A native of Seminole, Florida, Phillips grew up a fan of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. So when the Kansas City Chiefs faced his team in Super Bowl LV, Phillips made a friendly bet over the outcome with his former teammate, Royals catcher Salvador Perez.

Salvy paid off that bet ahead of the Royals’ first game against the Rays on Monday, wearing a Buccaneers Tom Brady jersey during batting practice.

Perez and the Royals had to set the record straight, though. After all, Patrick Mahomes is a part-owner of the Royals.

“Patrick Mahomes is the best,” Perez said with a finger wag.

Tom Brady, being the social media guru that he is, had to fire back on the Royals’ tweet. He decided to hold the Super Bowl win over Mahomes’ head with his response.

In the end, Mahomes got the last word, reminding Brady that he won the battle, but hasn’t yet won the war.
