Green Bay Packers coach Matt LaFleur met with the media in Sao Paulo, Brazil on Thursday morning. He said the 10-hour flight down went well, and the experience so far in Brazil has been a positive.

“Bom dia!” LaFleur said to open the session. (Translated to “good day!”)

Here are some highlights from the press conference:

On being in Brazil: “We’re really excited to be down here in Brazil. Your country has been great to us, the people have been fantastic. We’re looking forward to making history tomorrow, and really looking forward to playing the Philadelphia Eagles to start off the 2024 season.”

On the experience: “It’s great to be here. Our experience down here has been nothing but positive. The only negative was the long flight, that’s out of the norm for us. We’ve only been here a short time, but the food, the people, everybody has been A-plus. It’s been a positive experience for us. We’re looking forward to it tomorrow. Hopefully all our Brazilian fans will show up and be cheering on the green and gold. Hopefully it’s a homefield advantage for us. It’s been a great experience for us thus far.”

More on playing in Brazil: “It’s an honor to be here.”

On playing Eagles: “When you look at their front, both offensively and defensively, it’s a pretty dominant front. At the same time, I’m looking at our guys, I’m really excited to see what we’re able to do. It’s going to be a great challenge, but it’s one we’re looking forward to.”

On international games: “It truly is a privilege though. Any opportunity we get to go anywhere, home, away, overseas, it’s a great opportunity for our players, our team to show what we’re all about.”

On last season: “Looking back on it, I probably held them back early on. The more aggressive we got, the better we did. Every season, there’s a learning curve to it. I’m excited about where we are. Tomorrow is going to be a great test to show us exactly where we are. Just excited about this opportunity for our guys.”

On punter Daniel Whelan: “Daniel had an outstanding training camp. Every day, I’m amazed at practice seeing him kicking. He’s dropping bombs out there. It’s spectacular to see. Although I tell him all the time he’s a great kicker, I just only hope we only use him as a holder. Hopefully we’re scoring a lot of points and not punting the ball too much. Knowing that, if we do have to punt, he gives us an opportunity to flip the field, and that’s all you can ask out of a punter.”

On defense’s progression: “All about playstyle. Playing fast, playing physical, going after the ball. Those are hallmarks of great defenses. You have to have an attacking mindset, attacking mentality, to get the ball back to your offense.”

On Thursday’s practice: “More of a ‘shake out’ practice.” Expecting a team and individual period to help “shake” the long trip out of the team.

On the flight: “The flight here was smooth. We were able to get the majority of the players were in the big pods, we had a great plane. The setup was outstanding. It went as good as I ever could have hoped for it or expected it to go.” Credited Matt Klein, Adam Korzun, Bryan “Flea” Engel for the logitics. Also said there’s “nothing better” than a flight home after a win.

Brazil legend Marta announces engagement to Pride teammate Lawrence

The pair have been in a relationship since 2022

Marta and her Orlando Pride teammate Carrie Lawrence have announced their engagement.

The Brazilian legend shared a series of pictures and videos on her Instagram account over the weekend confirming the news.

Marta, 38, and Lawrence, 27, have been in a relationship since 2022. Marta has played for the Pride since 2017, while Lawrence joined the club three years later.

Lawrence recently travelled to France to support Marta as she chased Olympic gold in her final tournament with Brazil. Marta and her teammates reached the final but ultimately came up short, settling for a silver medal after a 1-0 defeat to the United States in the final.

In 2021, Marta announced her engagement to her former Pride teammate Toni Pressley, but the couple would later break up.

After a break for the Olympics and the NWSL x Liga MX Femenil Summer Cup, the Pride will resume NWSL play on Friday when they travel to Houston to face the Dash.

Orlando is currently in first place in the NWSL, carrying an unbeaten record of 11 wins and five draws in 16 games.

NBC reveals Peacock broadcast team for Eagles-Packers matchup in Brazil

Noah Eagle (play-by-play), Todd Blackledge (analyst) and Kaylee Hartung (sideline reporter) will call the Green Bay Packers-Philadelphia Eagles game in primetime on Peacock on Friday, Sept. 6 in São Paulo,Brazil.

The Eagles will host the Packers in primetime on Peacock on Friday, Sept. 6, in São Paulo. Peacock will be the exclusive national home of the NFL’s first-ever regular-season game in Brazil.

NBC just announced that Noah Eagle (play-by-play), Todd Blackledge (analyst), and Kaylee Hartung (sideline reporter) will be on the call in São Paulo for the season opener for both clubs.

Eagle, who earlier this year won a Sports Emmy for Outstanding Personality/Emerging On Air, and Blackledge, NBC Sports’ Big Ten Saturday Night commentary team, called last season’s AFC Wild Card matchup between the Cleveland Browns and Houston Texans, as well as a Cincinnati Bengals-Pittsburgh Steelers matchup in late December. Hartung was the sideline reporter for Peacock’s exclusive presentation of the Dolphins-Chiefs AFC Wild Card game in January 2024, and is the sideline reporter for Prime Video’s Thursday Night Football.

The Peacock exclusive NFL game from São Paulo on Friday night will follow the Thursday night (Sept. 5) NFL Kickoff game on NBC and Peacock, between the Super Bowl champion Chiefs and Baltimore Ravens.

The network also announced that in early September, Peacock will feature four consecutive nights of primetime football:

· Thurs., Sept. 5 — NFL Kickoff Game: Ravens at Chiefs (NBC, Peacock)
· Fri., Sept. 6 — Peacock Exclusive NFL Game from São Paulo, Brazil
· Sat., Sept. 7 – Big Ten Saturday Night: Colorado at Nebraska (NBC, Peacock)
· Sun., Sept. 8 – Season Debut of Primetime’s #1 Show: Sunday Night Football: Rams at Lions (NBC, Peacock)

This will be the Eagles’ second International Series Game in the regular season. They played in London during the 2018 campaign and defeated Jacksonville, 24-18, at Wembley Stadium. The Eagles played preseason games in Mexico City in 1978, London in 1989 and ’91, and Tokyo in 1993.

Home to the Brazilian soccer team SC Corinthians, the stadium was an official venue for the 2014 FIFA World Cup and 2016 Olympic Games.

Jordan Love is a star, and two years ago at Lincoln Financial Field, he made a huge impression on the Eagles and cornerback Darius Slay.

Green Bay is loaded and coming off a playoff appearance, and the matchup would feature elite playmakers at quarterback, wide receiver, RB, CB, and pass rusher.

USWNT vs. Brazil Olympics lineup: Albert starts gold medal match over Lavelle

Emma Hayes made her first lineup change of the entire Olympics that didn’t involve a known injury or suspension

The U.S. women’s national team made one change to its lineup for Saturday’s 2024 Olympic gold medal final against Brazil, and it wasn’t a move many saw coming.

Head coach Emma Hayes selected Korbin Albert to start in the midfield over Rose Lavelle, but otherwise made no alterations to the group that defeated Germany 1-0 in the semifinal round.

That meant a place in the team for the only USWNT injury doubt, Tierna Davidson. The Gotham FC defender sustained a knee contusion in the group stage, but recovered to play the first 45 minutes of Tuesday’s win.

Only 13 players have started for the USWNT during this tournament, and both previous changes were enforced. Emily Sonnett replaced Davidson while the latter was out with injury, while Albert started a 1-0 quarterfinal win over Japan with Sam Coffey suspended for yellow-card accumulation.

Should Naomi Girma and Alyssa Naeher play the full 90 or 120 minutes in the final, they will have played every second of this Olympic tournament.

USWNT lineup vs. Brazil

USA (4-3-3): Alyssa Naeher; Emily Fox, Naomi Girma, Tierna Davidson, Crystal Dunn; Korbin Albert, Sam Coffey, Lindsey Horan; Trinity Rodman, Sophia Smith, Mallory Swanson

Brazil (5-4-1): Lorena; Jheniffer, Lauren, Tarciane, Thais, Yasmim; Adriana, Vitoria Yaya, Duda Sampaio, Ludmila; Gabi Portilho

USWNT stars Rodman, Smith on Marta: ‘Love her, but we want to win’

Rodman and Smith agree that the six-time World Player of the Year “would want us to give her our best game”

The U.S. women’s national team’s attacking stars are among the many admirers Brazilian legend Marta has accumulated over the years.

Just don’t expect Trinity Rodman and Sophia Smith to hold back in Saturday’s gold medal match.

The USWNT and Brazil will face off in the final of the 2024 Olympics women’s soccer competition. By itself, that would be an event of massive significance, but the game will be spiced up further by the fact that Marta has said she will retire from international play following the Paris Games.

That effectively leaves a USWNT side full of Marta fans having to choose between going all out to win, or letting the six-time FIFA World Player of the Year end her national team career with Brazil’s first-ever win at a World Cup or Olympics.

Per Rodman, the ‘conundrum’ has a clear answer.

“We want that gold, so I’m not gonna say too much on that,” said the Washington Spirit forward with a laugh. “Love her, but we want to win.”

“I know she would want us to give her our best game,” added Smith, whose goal sent the USWNT past Germany in a tense semifinal. “That’s the highest level of respect you can give someone.”

It is something of a surprise that the USWNT will be the final opponent in Marta’s incredible career with Brazil. A first-half red card for a dangerously high kick in a 2-0 group-stage loss to Spain resulted in a red card for Marta, who was suspended for As Canarinhas‘ quarterfinal and semifinal matches.

Brazil’s younger generation extended the legend’s national team career for one more game, seeing off France 1-0 in the last-eight before shocking World Cup champions Spain in a wild 4-2 semifinal.

After removing the mystery over whether the USWNT would drop its ruthless streak just this once, both players made their admiration for the Orlando Pride icon clear.

“Marta’s for sure like, the player I looked up to growing up. Whenever I would watch highlights of players with my dad, it was always Marta,” explained Smith.

“We get to play against her in the NWSL, which we’re really lucky for that, and to play against her in this magnitude of the game, I think is so special.”

USWNT stars: Marta ‘changed the game’

Rodman declared the 38-year-old Brazil captain “a legacy forever,” before adding that women’s soccer worldwide can be seen from a pre-Marta and post-Marta lens.

“It goes without saying: Marta has changed the game of soccer around the world,” stated Rodman. “She’s such a talented soccer player, but also a great human, which speaks volumes. I’ve always looked up to her, I think we all kind of do.”

Smith agreed, saying that players like she and Rodman “wouldn’t be here probably without a Marta, who did change the game forever, and is continuing to change the game.

“I don’t think words can really describe how grateful we are for a player like Marta to just advocate for young players like us.”

Olympics: Gui Santos plays 29 minutes off bench in Brazil’s loss vs. Germany in Group B

The young Golden State forward notched eight points off the bench against Germany on Tuesday.

While Steph Curry and Steve Kerr are busy in Group C of the Olympic Games, another player is representing the Golden State Warriors in Group B in Paris. On Tuesday, Gui Santos played his second Olympic game for Brazil.

After meeting France in the opening game of the group stage, Brazil met another tough opponent for game two — Germany.  The German team features multiple NBA players led by Dennis Schroder, Franz Wagner, Mo Wagner and Daniel Theis.

While Brazil battled for two quarters, Germany secured the lead in the third quarter and never looked back. Schroder led all scorers with 20 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the field with six assists in Germany’s 86-73 win in Group B.

After scoring nine points against France in his Olympic debut, Santos scored eight points in 29 minutes off the bench against Germany. Santos added five boards and an assist for Brazil. Santos shot the ball well, hitting back-to-back 3-pointers in the second quarter.

With two losses and only two points in the group, Brazil will have one final chance to secure a win in the group stage on Friday against Japan.

Ronald Araujo leaves Uruguay vs. Brazil Copa America quarterfinal with injury

An emotional Araújo limped out of Saturday’s quarterfinal with a suspected hamstring strain

Ronald Araújo suffered an injury in the first half of Saturday’s 2024 Copa América semifinal between Uruguay and Brazil.

The Barcelona center back went down attempting to block a 30th minute cross, and immediately began holding the back of his right leg.

Araújo stayed down as trainers came to check on him, and Uruguay wasted little time in signaling for a substitution.

While the 25-year-old did manage to very slowly walk off under his own power, his emotions pointed to a worrisome injury. Uruguay sent veteran José María Giménez on in the 33rd minute, with the Atlético Madrid defender taking over at center back.

Araújo’s gestures indicated that he had injured his hamstring, which — barring a very minor issue, which this did not appear to be — would likely sideline him for the rest of this Copa América.

Despite later losing Nahitan Nández to a red card in the second half, Uruguay still managed to advance, eliminating Brazil 4-2 on penalties after a scoreless 90 minutes.

Two games now await Marcelo Bielsa’s side, whether or not Araújo plays any further part in the competition: a semifinal against Colombia on July 10, followed by either the Copa América final four days later, or a third-place game on July 13.

Traditionally, a hamstring strain tends to require four weeks to make a full recovery. However, a more severe strain can be a months-long issue, which would be a nightmare scenario for Uruguay and Barcelona.

Uruguay vs. Brazil: How to watch 2024 Copa America, TV channel, live stream

Two South American giants meet in a marquee clash

Uruguay and Brazil face off Saturday night in the marquee matchup of the 2024 Copa América quarterfinal round.

The two South American powers will meet in Las Vegas in a match that could have been a final, but will instead only earn the winner a spot in the last four.

Uruguay came through Group C unscathed, defeating Bolivia, Panama and the United States to earn top spot.

Brazil, meanwhile, mostly failed to impress in Group D, opening with a shock draw against Costa Rica before recovering to beat Paraguay and then closing with a draw against group-winner Colombia.

The Seleção will have to deal with a major absence in this match, as Ballon d’Or candidate Vinicius Jr. will be sidelined due to yellow-card suspension. Endrick, 17, could be given a huge opportunity in his place.

For Uruguay, attacker Maximiliano Araújo is in doubt after he was stretchered off against the U.S. with a head injury.

The winner of this match will face the winner between Colombia and Panama in the semifinal.
