Oklahoma football notebook: Lincoln Riley, Brayden Willis, Delarrin Turner-Yell talk Tuesday

Ahead of Oklahoma’s game against Baylor Saturday night, Lincoln Riley, Brayden Willis, and Delarrin Turner-Yell met with the media Tuesday.

Oklahoma (6-2, 5-2) is gearing up for a return to action this weekend when they host Baylor (2-5. 2-5) Saturday night in Norman.

The Sooners will be hoping to further the momentum built up after their blowout win in Bedlam despite having a COVID-19 outbreak that forced a postponement of their game against West Virginia last week and kept them away from team facilities for several days.

On Monday, Lincoln Riley didn’t provide a load of confidence about the state of his team leading up to the game this weekend, stating simply that they had “a shot” at playing this week.

Tuesday, in his weekly press conference, Riley seemed to have a bit more optimism in a return to action this week as long as some more tests came back negative in the coming days.

Along with him, Brayden Willis and Delarrin Turner-Yell spoke to the media Tuesday as well. Here is what they all had to say.

Lincoln Riley says injured H-back Brayden Willis is ‘really, really close’ to return

Oklahoma has been missing a key piece to its offense since the start of Big 12 play. It sounds like Brayden Willis is close to a return.

Oklahoma has been missing a key piece to its offense since the start of Big 12 Conference play.

Starting H-back Brayden Willis went down in the Kansas State game and then missed the Iowa State game and every game since. His injury is undisclosed, but it appeared in the Kansas State game that he suffered a lower body injury.

Willis tweeted out on Saturday night after the Kansas game that he would be potentially returning to the field. Lincoln Riley reiterated that on Monday during the Big 12 teleconference.

“Brayden’s doing well,” he said. “I think he’s really, really close, so we’ll see how he develops here and how he continues to respond to treatment and all that here over the next several days. But I think he’s certainly getting pretty close.”

Since his injury, freshman Mikey Henderson has emerged in Willis’ absence. The 6 foot 2, 234 pound H-back has been an unexpected contributor and has blossomed over the last two games.

Oklahoma still has Jeremiah Hall and Austin Stogner is ‘fine’ coming off an injury in the Kansas game.

“And then I think we’ve got a lot of trust in that entire room,” Riley said. “Those guys have done a nice job. Mikey’s (Henderson) one of those guys that’s been able to take advantage of some of the time that Brayden has missed and some of the reps that he’s been able to get. He’s more and more, I think, developing more trust from his teammates and from his coaches, and that’s provided some opportunities. And he’s a talented and explosive player that’s got a really fun skillset. So the more trust he can build, the more opportunities he’s going to get.”

Oklahoma is on a bye week and will host Oklahoma State on Nov. 21.

Oklahoma may be without H-back Brayden Willis for Iowa State game, per report

Oklahoma seems to have its first impactful injury so far to the 2020 season. “Doesn’t sound like” Brayden Willis will play this week.

Oklahoma football seems to have their first impactful injury so far to the 2020 season.

Brayden Willis went down in the second half of the Sooners’ game against Kansas State a week ago after taking a hit to his lower body. Willis did not return in the game.

According to Gabe Ikard, who works for Oklahoma’s radio broadcast team, on he and Teddy Lehman’s podcast, who also works for Oklahoma’s radio broadcast team, Willis may not be available for Lincoln Riley on offense against Iowa State.

“Doesn’t sound like Brayden Willis will be available this weekend,” Ikard said.

The H-back room, though, is one of Oklahoma’s best and deepest rooms. The Sooners returned Willis, Jeremiah Hall and Austin Stogner, as well as welcomed in true freshman Mikey Henderson, who impressed in the first game against FCS Missouri State.

Stogner had his career-best game a week ago, catching five passes for 80 receiving yards. Hall also caught a touchdown.

Oklahoma is scheduled to kickoff at 6:30 p.m. CT against Iowa State.

Oklahoma in review: H-backs a major strength once again for the Sooners

The H-back position at Oklahoma has been a staple under Lincoln Riley, and it looks to be a major strength again for the Sooners in 2020.

Sooners Wire is going to review notes from fall camp and the first week of the season as Oklahoma is set to begin Big 12 play on Saturday.

At least in my room, the way I approach it with my guys, we need to go in with the mindset ‘we’re the guys.’ Coach Riley has a hard time taking us off the field. Since I’ve been here, we’ve increased our usage of the two-tight end sets. Selfishly, wish we had all four of those guys out there at one time. But they’ve certainly worked hard. And we’ve challenged them.

Oklahoma players out for Missouri State game indicate availability for Kansas State game

It’s no secret that Oklahoma is hoping and expecting more than 20 players are back. Some indicated they are for the Kansas State game.

It’s no secret that Oklahoma is hoping and expecting more than 20 players are back for the Sooners first Big 12 contest of the year on Saturday.

Lincoln Riley was missing that amount of players on his depth chart for the 48-0 win over FCS Missouri State in the opener. Oklahoma has elected not to share testing data during the season, but the Sooners can’t do anything whenever players are missing during warm-ups.

Amongst those missing were starting running back T.J. Pledger, starting left tackle Anton Harrison and H-back Brayden Willis. Each of those three tweeted out indications that they will be available for Oklahoma’s home opener on Saturday against Kansas State.

Lincoln Riley did not indicate on Monday during the Big 12 teleconference how many players have returned since the Missouri State game and how many he expects out.

Oklahoma and Kansas State are scheduled to kickoff at 11 a.m. CT in Norman, Oklahoma.

Oklahoma players not in attendance at game jokingly tweet during season opener

Oklahoma is missing at least 20 players from its roster during the Missouri State game. Two of them tweeted during the game.

Oklahoma is missing at least 20 players from its roster during the Missouri State game.

This is due to suspensions, COVID-19 positive tests or contact tracing. Oklahoma head coach Lincoln Riley said earlier in the week that the Sooners would not be releasing testing data due to “competitive” reasons.

That hasn’t stopped two of those players from having some fun.

Oklahoma kicker Gabe Brkic tweeted from wherever he is at during the first quarter.

One of the Sooners’ H-backs, Brayden Willis, joined in on the fun.

Oklahoma has not released any information as to why these players are not available for the Missouri State game.

The Sooners are currently leading the Bears 41-0 at half. Spencer Rattler has thrown for four touchdowns in his starting debut and Oklahoma has held Missouri State to 37 total yards.

Oklahoma 2020 player card: No. 81 Brayden Willis

Sooners Wire will be creating player cards for readers to be introduced to the 2020 roster. Here is the No. 81 for Oklahoma.

There is a ton of momentum to having a 2020 college football season these days. No definite signs, yet, but the season would start less than 100 days from now.

Sooners Wire will be creating player cards for readers to be introduced to the 2020 roster.

Here is the No. 81 for Oklahoma.

––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

Name: Brayden Willis

Number: No. 81

Year: Junior

Position: H-Back

Hometown: Arlington, Texas

Height/Weight: 6-foot-3, 235 pounds

Oklahoma has a proud tradition of H-backs and Brayden Willis falls right in line with it.

The Arlington Martin High School product came to the Sooners as a three-star prospect on Rivals. Willis was a late addition to the 2018 recruiting class as he picked and signed with Oklahoma over Arizona, Houston and Wake Forest.

He played mostly on special teams as a freshman in 2018 before making a real impact as a sophomore. Willis played in all 14 games alongside H-back Jeremiah Hall, catching 11 passes for 168 yards, including the game-tying touchdown in Oklahoma’s historic comeback against Baylor in Waco, Texas.

Willis should be a starter by committee at H-back alongside Hall and Austin Stogner.
