Brandon Winton, Jr. hasn’t had a chance to speak with Tyler Grisham since he camped at Clemson earlier this summer, but the big-time receiver prospect out of Bradenton (Florida) IMG Academy is hoping that the Tigers are among the schools that reach out, come next Thursday, Sept. 1.

“Coach Grisham, when I first met him, I felt like we connected real well,” Winton recently told The Clemson Insider in a phone interview. “I liked what he did at camp. He taught me different looks and stuff that I didn’t know, going into the camp. I just like the way he let us go out there and compete.”

“It would definitely mean a lot for him to reach out,” Winton said of Clemson’s wide receivers coach. “I like him and what he’s doing at Clemson. I’m definitely rooting for them to reach out to me on Sept. 1, for sure.”

Since Winton participated in the Dabo Swinney Camp, which was the only place he camped this summer. He later made his way to the University of Miami, where he immediately picked up an offer from coach Mario Cristobal and staff.

He also added an offer from FAMU — his first HBCU scholarship offer — adding to a list that includes Arkansas, Boston College, Colorado, Kansas, Kentucky, Pitt, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Vanderbilt and Eastern Kentucky.

It’s no question that Sept. 1 — when college coaches can officially start directly contacting prospects in the class of 2024 — will be big for Winton and his recruitment. He mentions schools like West Virginia, Mississippi State and Florida, as ones that haven’t offered but have shown extensive interest.

He also continues to hear a lot from both Miami and Texas A&M.

After a small school tour, Winton has mainly been focused on getting ready for the season with his IMG teammates. He transferred from the Webb School of Knoxville (Tenn.) back in January, after totaling 580 receiving yards and seven touchdowns in nine games as a sophomore.

“My goals, really for myself, are to make as many plays that I can,” Winton said. “Show a lot of off-the-ball plays like when I don’t have the ball in my hands, making plays for my other teammates — really downfield blocking.”

Playing a national schedule makes gameday visits more difficult, but Winton would like to try to schedule some after he gets in contact with some coaches around the country come next Thursday.

Winton, who visited Clemson for the Florida State game last year, would consider visiting Memorial Stadium again this fall.

“Most definitely,” he said. “If they reach out to me on Sept. 1, I’m definitely gonna get back up there.”

4-star Volunteer State athlete looking forward to building relationship with Grisham, Clemson

Among the standout wide receivers who had the chance to showcase their talent on the second day of Dabo Swinney on June 2 was Markeis Barrett — a 6-foot-1, 170-pound four-star rising junior from the Webb School of Knoxville in Tennessee.

“It was good,” Barrett told The Clemson Insider regarding his Swinney Camp experience. “I loved it. I liked it because it was more of a learning experience and they weren’t focused on the combine or stuff like that. They just really wanted to get some good work in.”

What type of feedback did he receive from Clemson’s coaching staff?

“I learned from Coach Grisham and also Coach Dabo,” Barrett said. “They taught me when I’m in my receiver stance to get lower and also have my front foot pointed forward instead of being curved in.”

For Clemson’s head coach to give him receiving tips, meant a lot to Barrett.

“I like Coach Dabo,” he added. “I learned a lot from him. When I caught the ball, he told me to keep it in the hand that I catch it with. Say you run a slant and you catch it on the inside, you’ll keep it on your left, instead of putting it back on your right.”

After he camped, Barrett was shown around campus and had the chance to meet a lot of Clemson’s coaching staff. He had the opportunity to speak with both Swinney and Grisham after the camp concluded for the day.

“I think he’s a good coach,” Barrett said of Clemson’s wide receivers coach. “He’s definitely somebody I’d want to play for.”

At the time of our conversation with Barrett, Clemson had yet to offer any class of 2024 wide receivers. The Tigers have since offered both Grimsley (Greensboro, N.C.) four-star Alex Taylor and Cummings (Burlington, N.C.) four-star Jonathan Paylor.

According to Barrett, Grisham told him that an offer was “definitely a possibility.” At the same time, Barrett felt like he improved his case and showed that he was an offer-worthy candidate when he worked out for Clemson’s receivers coach.

“I think that would be big,” he said regarding a potential offer from the Tigers. “That’s most definitely a place I’m shooting to get an offer from.”

When he camped at Clemson, Barrett was joined by Brandon Winton, Jr. — a 6-foot-1, 195-pound three-star rising junior from Bradenton’s (Fla.) IMG Academy. Barrett and Winton are former teammates and best friends. They’re helping each other throughout the recruiting process and have gone on several visits with each other this summer already.

“It was amazing,” Barrett said regarding visiting Clemson with Winton, “because that’s a school that we like a lot. It was pretty cool to go with him and have him right up there with me. I feel like we both feel the same way about Clemson.”

After camping at Clemson, Barrett was planning to camp at the University of North Carolina and Alabama. He also had visits planned for Virginia Tech and Cincinnati.

Barrett would like to get back to Tiger Town in the near future. He’d also like to keep building a relationship with Grisham, as well as the remainder of Clemson’s coaching staff.

Barrett ranks as high as the nation’s No. 33 athlete and No. 3 prospect in the state of Tennessee for his class, per 247Sports.

Rising Volunteer state athlete hoping to earn an offer from ‘dream school’ Clemson

Among the standout wide receivers who had the chance to showcase their talent on the second day of Dabo Swinney on June 2 was Brandon Winton, Jr. — a 6-foot-1, 195-pound three-star rising junior from Bradenton’s (Fla.) IMG Academy.

Winton recently transferred from the Webb School of Knoxville in Tenneseee.

He arrived back on campus to work out for Tyler Grisham and potentially put himself in a position to earn an offer from the Tigers. Winton made a game-day visit last season and was in attendance for Clemson’s 30-20 win over Florida State on Oct. 30, 2021.

Earlier this month gave Winton an opportunity to see everything Clemson had to offer. His favorite part, though, was getting to try on Clemson’s jerseys for a photoshoot, which he said looked good on him

What type of feedback did Winton get from Grisham during Swinney Camp?

“He let me know that he knew I was good, but when he saw me in person, I was a lot better,” Winton said. “I basically moved up on his depth chart from coming to camp and letting him see me.”

At the time of our conversation with Winton, Clemson had yet to offer any class of 2024 wide receivers. The Tigers have since offered both Grimsley (Greensboro, N.C.) four-star Alex Taylor and Cummings (Burlington, N.C.) four-star Jonathan Paylor

“That would definitely mean a lot to me,” Winston said regarding a potential offer from a school like Clemson. “Clemson, that’s my dream school. That would mean a lot to me. I probably wouldn’t make a decision right off (that offer), but it definitely would mean a lot to me.”

Even without an offer, Winton told us that the Tigers “definitely stand real high” in his recruitment. That certainly speaks to his relationship with Grisham, who he had been in contact with all throughout the spring.

“He’s real good,” Winton said of Clemson’s wide receivers coach. “I love Coach Grisham as a coach, but he’s way better as a person. He’s a young coach, but he knows the game and he knows what he’s talking about. That’s what I like about him.”

Winton felt like he was able to take a lot away from working with both Grisham and Dabo Swinney. According to him, they both gave him a lot of pointers and helped him improve his starting stance.

Swinney being hands-on with campers certainly stood out to Winton.

“It definitely showed me that he’s really into it with his players,” he said of Clemson’s head coach. “Being a receiver himself, he knows what he’s talking about at my position. That’s what I really liked.”

As far as the rest of his recruitment is concerned, Winton mentioned Colorado, Arkansas and Texas A&M as the schools that are currently recruiting him the hardest.

Shortly after visiting Clemson, the IMG Academy product visited the University of Miami. He’s also hoping to stop by both Louisville and Cincinnati sometime this month.

Top Volunteer State athlete: Clemson is ‘my dream school’

Whether you’re talking about football or basketball, this class of 2024 prospects is a name worth knowing.

The Clemson Insider caught Webb School (Knoxville, TN.) ATH Brandon Winton, Jr., who was on campus for a game day visit last weekend. Winton was in attendance for Clemson’s 30-20 win over Florida State on Saturday, Oct. 30 at Memorial Stadium.

Winton detailed his first game day experience in Death Valley with TCI.

“It was super good,” he said. “I mean, it was a crazy atmosphere. The coaches were super good to me. Everything just went really well.”

What was the highlight of Winton’s experience in Tiger Town?

“Probably when I got to meet Coach Dabo [Swinney] and Mrs. Swinney,” he added.

Clemson wide receivers coach Tyler Grisham has been Winton’s main recruiter so far. They’re still in the beginning stages of their relationship, but it’s clear that Grisham has already made an impression on The Volunteer State native.

“It was real good,” Winton said. “He was basically just letting me know that he’s really interested in me right now. I’m young. I just got to get better and I have a lot of time to get better. It’s gonna be a process with them and me and us just building that relationship. Basically, they just were like ‘Keep grinding and keep staying in touch,’ and they’re gonna keep going with me.”

Winton likes how Clemson rotates its receivers. He likes how the Tigers are willing to throw everybody in the mix at wide receiver if they need to. It also means a lot to him to be recruited by WRU.

“That’s my dream school,” he said of Clemson. “So that’s big, first and foremost, and just the receivers they’ve had in the past and how they succeed there. They’re big on getting receivers to the league, to the next level. That’s real big.”

The eventual four-star prospect currently holds offers from Power 5 programs like Boston College, Pitt and Tennessee

Winton doesn’t know whether he will play football or basketball at the next level. The 6-foot-2 combo guard is along for the ride and has 2.5 more years of high school before he has to ultimately decide between the two.

“I feel like I’m a good team player,” Winton said when asked to describe himself as a player. “I’m gonna get after it. And I’m just gonna do whatever it takes for my team to win.
