‘The floodgates will open’: Brandon Vera says ONE Championship is ready to ‘take America by storm’

ONE heavyweight champion Brandon Vera talks about the unique ethos behind ONE Championship, and says the promotion is ready to take the US ‘by storm’.

[autotag]Brandon Vera[/autotag] is a happy, content man right now. The 42-year-old veteran is sitting on top of the world as ONE Championship’s heavyweight champion, he is expecting the imminent arrival of his first son, and he is looking forward to getting back to action once ONE Championship resumes their event schedule later this year.

But being a champion in ONE Championship is about more than simply being better than your peers, as Vera (16-8) explained. As well as being their best inside the cage – known in ONE as the “circle” – fighters are encouraged to be their best away from the cage, too.

“You get to realize that what you do is bigger than the sport of martial arts, the sport of MMA, the sport of all of the martial arts coming together. It’s more than (that),” he said during an interview with MMA Junkie from his home in Guam. “It’s you as a person, it’s you as an ambassador, it’s you as a good citizen of the world, promoting goodwill and helping everywhere that you can. Always showing and striving for the values, honor, discipline and integrity.

“When you join a company that’s doing business this way, they’re doing meetings this way, they’re doing everything a certain way – by the martial arts code – it’s very easy for you as an athlete to come over and transition into this role that they want from you. They want you to become the most perfect martial artist that you can become, and they want you to become an ambassador for the world of goodwill.”

That altruistic approach could be open to cynicism from the outside, but Vera said that ONE’s approach is much more than just a marketing ploy. Instead, he said it’s a bonafide ethos that runs through the entire organization, right through to the athletes themselves.

“When somebody is doing these kinds of things and not just ‘showing’ these kinds of things – like, I would say, ‘doing it for the ‘Gram, Facebooking it, TikTok-ing it’ – it’s not for show. It’s real,” said Vera.

“They take the world champions to every single high official meeting that they have and they let us mingle with everyone. And we hear the stories of sharing and caring and events they have put together, and it doesn’t end. So, for me, working at ONE Championship doesn’t even feel like a job.”

‘No honeymoon period’

Vera has been with ONE Championship since 2014, so is ideally placed to offer insight and advice to fighters coming into the promotion for the first time. He cited a conversation he had with former UFC and Bellator lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez, who was initially taken aback by the way ONE went about their business following his arrival in the promotion last year.

“From all of the organizations he went to all around the entire world that he held belts in, he came in and asked me, ‘Hey Brandon. Is this really real, or is this just like the honeymoon period?’ and I said, ‘No, man. Mr. Alvarez, it’s like this every single day. There is no honeymoon period.’ And then, when he started shaking his head and you start to understand that, wow, this is not a front. Nobody’s pretending. Everyone wants everyone else to succeed and help promote health throughout the world, and goodwill. I keep saying goodwill, because everyone has their own version of goodwill and helping. ONE Championship just wants you to shine in your own way and help the world as you can. And they’ll show you showing out for the world.

“It doesn’t makes sense, compared to all the other organizations,” he laughed. “It’s not normal!”

Heading Stateside

Vera said he’s convinced that the American MMA audience would fall in love with the ONE Championship product if and when the promotion broke ground in the United States.

“I think ONE Championship would honestly take America by storm,” he stated. “They were almost ready for Pride. They were almost ready for that style, the Bushido code. They were almost ready back then. Then it fell apart. Life happens, things happen.

“But what ONE Championship is offering now is what Pride had, with six turbos on it and nitrous ready to kick in. I think the US of A would love this product and absolutely adore it as soon as it hit the stands. Because the American culture is ‘doing it for the ‘Gram, doing it for Facebooking, TikTok-ing.’ If we can bring this product to the US as soon as possible to compete with all the other brands, and you can see that this is as real and as true martial arts from their home life to the middle of the ‘circle’. And no bad press, you have real heroes who never get in trouble and don’t do things wrong and try to stay by the book. I think America would eat it up, especially at this time right now.

“People are looking for a guiding light. Something that’s shining that’s not fake or a front. It’s not a sideshow. It’s really real, so I think an American crowd, especially right now, could use this in our lives. It’s something that, man, the universe is drawing us to it. It’s time.”

Vera said that one of his remaining career goals is, “to fight in Madison Square Garden in New York, if we get to go to the United States,” and suggested that, while bringing ONE Championship to the United States would win over the fans, the promotion is already winning over the athletes themselves, including many who currently compete in rival organizations.

“I can tell you that at least 70%, 80% of all athletes have been calling, emailing, texting, Facebooking, DM-ing, IG-ing, PM-ing, trying to get on the ONE Championship roster one way or another,” he said. “And I’m talking about guys from other organizations. Guys from Top 10 in different weight classes, ready to move on. So I think as soon as ONE Championship kicks the doors down and does a show in the US, the floodgates will open.”

Video: Brandon Vera’s top 3 knockouts in ONE Championship

Ahead of his return to action at ONE Infinity 1, check out a hat trick of first-round KOs from heavyweight champion Brandon Vera.

[autotag]Brandon Vera[/autotag]’s ONE Championship record at heavyweight is untouchable, and he’ll look to extend that red-hot form when he returns to action later this summer.

ONE heavyweight champion Vera (16-8) is set to make his return to action against Arjan Bhullar at ONE Infinity 1 in Manila, Philippines, on May 29, where he hopes to continue his devastating run in the Asian promotion’s heaviest division.

Since signing for ONE Championship in 2014, Vera has fought four times as a heavyweight and claimed all four wins by first-round knockout. He made a splash in his debut with a soccer-kick KO of Igor Subora, then captured the heavyweight title in his second appearance with a stunning head-kick KO against Paul Cheng. Then, in his two most recent heavyweight outings, “The Truth” defended his title with first-round knockouts of Hideki Sekine and Mauro Cerilli.

Now, after unsuccessfully attempting to become a two-division champion against reigning middleweight and light heavyweight champ Aung La N Sang, Vera is returning to his natural weight class to take on Canada’s Bhullar (10-1), who picked up a unanimous decision against Cerilli in his promotional debut in October 2019.

ONE Championship has released a highlight reel video showing Vera’s best three KOs so far. Check out his handiwork – and footwork – above to see Vera starch Subora, Cheng and Cerilli in spectacular fashion.

ONE Championship stars Miesha Tate, Brandon Vera meet U.S. troops in Guam

Miesha Tate and Brandon Vera gave back and learned a lot on their trip.

It’s been all doom and gloom in the news lately, so here’s a little snippet of feel-good news, courtesy of ONE Championship.

Earlier this month, ONE vice president [autotag]Miesha Tate[/autotag] and reigning heavyweight champion [autotag]Brandon Vera[/autotag] paid a visit to Guam to visit the troops stationed at Andersen Air Force Base.

The visit was coordinated with the United Services Organization (USO), as Tate and Vera took part in various activities with servicemen and women who are assigned a long way from home.

It was an opportunity for the troops to meet two of the most recognizable stars from ONE while, for Tate and Vera, it was a chance to give back to those who serve for the protection of the nation.

“This trip has been spectacular,” Tate said. “We love to do this stuff for the military. It’s so cool to see their faces light up for a second after so much sacrifice that they do.

“I got to go on a submarine, which literally blew my mind. I have so much more respect for what they do, if that’s even possible. To go in that tiny submarine and spend all that time they have to spend there, and the dedication they have to stay on point and defend our country, it’s just crazy.

“It’s my first time in Guam, so for me it’s like a new experience. I love it so much I want to come back.”

Tate and Vera toured the Air Force Base and the Naval Base during their visit, and took part in a meet-and-greet session where they met the troops, took photos and signed autographs.

“I love to be able to meet the troops and just show them our gratitude,” Tate said. “Sincerely, from the bottom of my heart, thank you so much for everything that you do. It means a lot, the sacrifice you are willing to give if necessary to protect what we enjoy on an everyday basis.”

Vera previously served in the United States Air Force from 1997 to 1999 but admitted he was unaware of the amount of military protection the U.S. provides to the region, despite the fact he owns a residence in Guam.

“I had no idea, and I’ve been here four years,” Vera admitted. “You hear these stories, and you’re almost crying because it’s about passion and family and about connecting with each other and staying connected and helping each other.”

Brandon Vera to defend ONE heavyweight title against Arjan Bhullar at ONE Infinity 2

Brandon “The Truth” Vera tops the bill in Manila as he puts his heavyweight title on the line at ONE Infinity 2.

ONE Championship’s second “Infinity Series” event has a heavyweight main event, with two familiar names to UFC fans set to go head to head for championship gold.

Reigning ONE heavyweight champion [autotag]Brandon Vera[/autotag] will put his title on the line against Canada’s [autotag]Arjan Bhullar[/autotag] in the main event of ONE Infinity 2 at the Mall of Asia, Manila, Philippines on Friday, May 29. The event will be streamed live on B/R Live following prelims on MMA Junkie.

Vera (16-8) is undefeated as a heavyweight in ONE Championship, with all four of his victories coming via first-round knockout. He captured the ONE heavyweight title in his second fight for the promotion, against Paul Cheng at “ONE Championship 35: Spirit of Champions” in November 2015, and has since defended it with first-round finishes of Japanese judoka Hideki Sekine and Italian former Cage Warriors heavyweight champion Mauro Cerilli.

Now he is set to face former Olympic wrestler and UFC fighter Bhullar (10-1), who claimed a unanimous decision win over Cerilli on his promotional debut at “ONE Championship 100: Century – Part 2” in October 2019. The 33-year-old heads into the title fight riding a three-fight win streak, with UFC wins over Marcelo Golm and Juan Adams joining his victory over Cerilli on his recent slate.

The co-main event in Manila sees a second title up for grabs, as [autotag]Christian Lee[/autotag] puts the ONE lightweight belt on the line against undefeated Moldovan [autotag]Iuri Lapicus[/autotag].

Lee (13-3) had unsuccessfully challenged for the ONE featherweight title in 2018 when he moved up a weight class to take on Japanese icon – and Lee’s occasional training partner – Shinya Aoki for the lightweight belt at “ONE Championship 96: Enter the Dragon” in May 2019.

Lee stunned Aoki with a blistering performance to claim the title via second-round TKO then, five months later, captured the ONE lightweight grand prix title with a dominant decision victory over Turkey’s [autotag]Saygid Guseyn Arslanaliev[/autotag] at “ONE Championship 100: Century – Part 1.”

Now “The Warrior” takes on a new challenge in the form of Moldova’s Lapicus (14-0), who surged into title contention with back-to-back submission finishes of Shannon Wiratchai and former featherweight champion Marat Gafurov. His win over the latter particularly caught the eye as he finished the former featherweight champion with his own signature move, the rear-naked choke, in just 67 seconds at “ONE Championship 108: Warrior’s Code.”

Also set to star in Manila is former UFC and Bellator lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez, who returns to action against grand prix finalist Arslanaliev in a lightweight matchup.

Alvarez (30-7) endured a nightmare start to his ONE Championship career when he was knocked out inside a round by Russian power-puncher Timofey Nastyukhin in the quarterfinals of the lightweight grand prix tournament. But “The Underground King” showed his fighting spirit in his next outing, as he bounced back with a come-from-behind win over former lightweight champion Eduard Folayang at “ONE Championship 99: Dawn of Heroes” in Manila in August 2019.

Alvarez returns to the scene of that victory, The Mall of Asia Arena, for his next test as he takes on dangerous finisher Arslanaliev (8-2), whose blistering run of finishes in ONE Championship came to an end against Lee in the lightweight grand prix final. Prior to that loss, “Dagi’s” only defeat came via disqualification. All eight of Arslanaliev’s wins have come inside the distance, with seven of them coming inside the first round.

ONE Infinity 2 confirmed fights:

  • Brandon Vera vs. Arjan Bhullar – for heavyweight title
  • Christian Lee vs. Iuri Lapicus – for lightweight title
  • Eddie Alvarez vs. Saygid Guseyn Arslanaliev

ONE Championship 113: Brandon Vera puts heavyweight strap on line in Manila in May

ONE heavyweight champion Brandon Vera will return to Manila to defend his title with Canadian Arjan Bhullar expected to be his opponent.

Reigning ONE heavyweight champion [autotag]Brandon Vera[/autotag] will return to the division to put his title on the line on May 29.

Vera (16-8) made an in-cage appearance at “ONE Championship 107: Fire & Fury” at Mall of Asia Arena in Manila on Friday to formally announce his return at “ONE Championship 113: Code of Honor,” which takes place at the same venue in May. His heavyweight title defense will be the main event, though his opponent will be announced later.

“I will be defending our belt on May 29 at MOA Arena,” Vera told the crowd. “We have people challenging me, thinking they can take our belt away.”

Vera’s tenure in ONE Championship saw him reel off four consecutive first-round knockouts to capture the promotion’s heavyweight title. He has defended it twice. The 42-year-old’s last outing saw him drop down to light heavyweight to challenge ONE middleweight and light heavyweight champion Aung La N Sang at “ONE Championship 100: Century.” But “The Burmese Python” snapped Vera’s unbeaten run in ONE with a second-round TKO.

Now Vera is returning to his regular weight class to defend his title, with AsianMMA.com reporting that Canadian former UFC heavyweight Arjan Bhullar will challenge for the belt – though the matchup is yet to be officially announced.

ONE Championship’s next event, “ONE Championship 108: Warrior’s Code,” takes place in Jakarta, Indonesia, on Friday, with middleweight contenders Leandro Ataides and Reinier de Ridder going head to head in the featured MMA bout.
