BREAKING: Wisconsin flips transfer DT Brandon Lane from Louisville

Massive news for the Badgers:

Wisconsin made a last-minute surprise transfer portal addition on Friday.

It landed a commitment from former Stephen F. Austin defensive tackle Brandon Lane, who had committed to Louisville earlier in the week.

Lane was 247Sports’ second-ranked available defensive tackle in the transfer portal. He is a three-star transfer and ranked No. 882 overall in this transfer cycle.

The veteran defensive lineman originally committed to transfer to Michigan State on April 26, but quickly decommitted on May 2. He flips to the Badgers from a Louisville program that seems to be on the rise under head coach Jeff Brohm. It is a surprising development after he pledged to the Cardinals only four days ago.

In short: this is a gigantic addition for Luke Fickell and his staff. Wisconsin was set to enter the 2024 season with a razor-thin depth chart at defensive line. The addition of lane adds another experienced member to a room that now is better equipped to enter the season.

Lane was originally a member of South Dakota State’s class of 2020 coming out of high school. He played sparingly for the Jackrabbits before transferring to Stephen F. Austin ahead of the 2022 season. He played a big role on the Lumberjacks’ defense in 2023, recording 45 total tackles and 1.5 sacks.

Wisconsin’s defensive line depth chart now includes James Thompson Jr., Curt Neal, Ben Barten, Elijah Hills (transfer) and Lane — plus a host of talented freshmen.

Wisconsin football loses transfer defensive line target to Louisville

Wisconsin loses out on another transfer defensive lineman:

Wisconsin transfer defensive line target Brandon Lane committed to Louisville on Monday.

It was thought the Badgers had landed a visit with the Stephen F. Austin transfer with his commitment originally set for later this week. That is off the table as he commits to Jeff Brohm and the Cardinals.

Before his commitment, Lane was 247Sports’ second-ranked available defensive tackle in the transfer portal. He is a three-star transfer and the No. 882 overall player in this transfer cycle.

The experienced defensive tackle was originally a member of Football Championship Subdivision South Dakota State’s class of 2020. He played sparingly for the Jackrabbits, then transferred to Stephen F. Austin ahead of the 2022 season. Lane played a big role on the Lumberjacks’ defense in 2023, recording 45 total tackles and 1.5 sacks.

Lane committed as a transfer to Michigan State on April 26 but decommitted on May 2. He joins a Louisville program that went 10-4 in 2023, former Purdue head coach Jeff Brohm’s first year at the helm.

Every major program in the country has been in pursuit of defensive line talent this offseason. Wisconsin is in desperate need of depth and talent at the position, but has recently watched targets C.J. West commit to IndianaKhurtiss Perry commit to Virginia Tech and Jay’Viar Suggs commit to LSU.

The program is a finalist for former Wyoming DL Gavin Meyer as it looks to round out a talented transfer portal class.

Lane was originally a member of South Dakota State’s class of 2020. He played sparingly for the Jackrabbits, then transferred to Stephen F. Austin ahead of the 2022 season. The veteran lineman was a significant piece of the Lumberjacks’ defense in 2023, as he recorded 45 total tackles and 1.5 sacks.

247Sports notes that Lane transfer committed to Michigan State on April 26, 2024 but quickly decommitted on May 2. He has since visited NC State, and reportedly has visits scheduled to Louisville, Wisconsin and Michigan.

Wisconsin has seen several of its top transfer defensive line targets commit elsewhere. Those include C.J. West to Indiana, Khurtiss Perry to Virginia Tech and Jay’Viar Suggs to LSU.

The program remains a finalist for former Wyoming DL Gavin Meyer, and is now reportedly also in on Lane.

Luke Fickell and his staff have made the position a priority in the spring transfer cycle and are still hard at work to land a commitment.
