Wisconsin four-star CB target Braeden Marshall commits to AAC school

The Badgers missed out on another high-profile target in the 2023 recruiting class:

Last month, 2023, four-star cornerback Braeden Marshall, who held an offer from UW, trimmed his list of schools down to North Carolina, Nebraska, and Wisconsin.

So, it was undoubtedly a surprise on Saturday when the 5-foot-10, 170-pound CB committed to Gus Malzahn and the UCF Golden Knights.

Per the 247Sports Composite, he’s the No. 359 overall prospect in the 2023 class, the No. 38 CB in the country, and the No. 71 player in Florida.

Marshall, who was undoubtedly a take for the Badgers, registered 28 tackles, 12 pass breakups, and four interceptions as a junior.

The Florida native also held offers from Arkansas, Boston College, Cincinnati, Indiana, Iowa State, Maryland, Minnesota, Nebraska, Northwestern, Penn State, and several others.

2023 4-Star CB Commits to UCF Over Nebraska

A 2023 four-star cornerback prospect has committed to UCF over Nebraska.

2023 four-star cornerback prospect Braeden Marshall has committed to UCF. He announced the news on Twitter.

Marshall’s commitment to UCF is very surprising. On July 23, he tweeted that he was down to three schools: Nebraska, North Carolina, and Wisconsin. So, UCF appeared to be out of the running.

Marshall attends Lake Mary High School in Lake Mary, Florida, so he will remain in his home state.

247 Sports Composite ranks Marshall as the 40th-best cornerback in the 2023 class.

According to MaxPreps, Marshall had 28 total tackles and three interceptions last season.

While missing out on Marshall is disappointing, it is not too devastating. The Cornhuskers looked like a late riser for Marshall. On3’s Recruiting Prediction Machine only gave the Cornhuskers a 1.8 percent chance to land Marshall, which was tied for the fifth-best odds.

Top cornerback target high on Clemson, continues to grow relationship with staff

It’s no secret that Clemson is a top school for Braeden Marshall.

The four-star cornerback out of Florida’s Lake Mary High School spoke with The Clemson Insider on Monday and revealed why Clemson is a top school in his recruitment, as well as where things currently stand in his process.

Marshall — a 5-foot-11, 185-pound rising senior in the class of 2023 — could have a decision made by the end of July. Clemson will most definitely be in the mix until the very end.

“I’ve really been in contact lately with the defensive coordinator (Wesley Goodwin) and Coach (DeAndre) McDaniel — our relationship has really grown,” Marshall said. “I’ve talked with Coach (Dabo) Swinney a couple of times. He’s shot me a couple of texts. We’re just growing our relationship, not just with one coach, but multiple coaches and they’re coming down this week to see me at my school.”

“Shoot, it’s improved a lot,” Marshall said regarding his relationship with Goodwin. “Coach Goodwin, we’ve been talking on the phone probably twice a week now. Our relationship has just grown and he’s a great man. I feel like he’s gonna do great things with the defense, even though it’s his first year being a defensive coordinator. He tells me all the time that he loves the way I play and he says I can fit in the defense.”

As Marshall’s relationship continues to grow with Clemson, it should come as no surprise that he included the Tigers in his formal list of favorites.

Marshall released his top 10 schools on Tuesday evening, on his birthday. And as expected, Clemson made his top group, along with Arkansas, North Carolina, Penn State, Miami, Tennessee, Pittsburgh, Wisconsin, Nebraska and UCF.

“I think Clemson is in my top 10 really because when I first visited them it was a family environment,” Marshall said. “Coach Dabo Swinney’s message to his recruits really hit different. He really cares about his players and wants them to graduate. He wants them to grow as a man and have a better life after football. With all that, I feel like Clemson has had a top-tier program for the past couple of years and that’s a big reason why I’ve got them in my top 10.”

Clemson is recruiting Marshall to play the cornerback position. Other schools have recruited him to play either nickel back or safety, but Marshall says he doesn’t really care about where he plays at the next level. It’s no secret that he has the versatility to play all over the secondary.

With that being said, part of Mike Reed’s recruiting pitch to Marshall is that he’ll have a chance to come in and compete early for playing time at the cornerback position.

“He’s told me that he plays all his guys and he doesn’t recruit his corners to play on the bench,” Marshall said. “Going there and playing early, I know I gotta earn that, but he told me it’s there, I just gotta work for it. If it isn’t the first year, the second year I’ll be on the field.”

Marshall won’t be able to officially visit Clemson the weekend of June 3-5. Instead, he plans to take an official visit during the season. With that said, Marshall is still hoping to get back to Clemson sometime in the near future — he estimates that he’ll be back in Tiger Town either June 10 or 11 — as well as make visits to other schools that make up his top group.

As of Monday, Marshall is hoping to have a decision made prior to his senior season. That’s why he is making sure that he takes his visits this summer.

“Really getting my eyes on the campus more times and being with the coaches more in person will really determine that,” he said. And, hopefully, with all that, I’ll have a decision by late July, before the season.”

Clemson among favorites for priority cornerback target

Clemson is on the formal list of favorites for a priority cornerback target in the 2023 class.

Lake Mary (Fla.) High School four-star Braeden Marshall released his top 10 schools on Tuesday evening, on his birthday. And as expected, the Tigers made his top group, along with Arkansas, North Carolina, Penn State, Miami, Tennessee, Pittsburgh, Wisconsin, Nebraska and UCF.

TCI caught up with Marshall on Monday, and he explained why Clemson made the cut from his list of 30-plus offers.

“I think Clemson is in my top 10 really because when I first visited them it was a family environment,” Marshall said. “Coach Dabo Swinney’s message to his recruits really hit different. He really cares about his players and wants them to graduate. He wants them to grow as a man and have a better life after football. With all that, I feel like, Clemson has had a top-tier program for the past couple of years and that’s a big reason why I’ve got them in my top 10.”

Clemson extended an offer to Marshall (5-11, 185) in early March, when he received the offer from cornerbacks coach Mike Reed while on his first-ever visit to campus.

Marshall told TCI recently that the visit “set the bar” for him.

“Clemson really set the bar, to be honest with you,” he said. “It checked everything off the checklist. That really set the bar.”

TCI asked Marshall about the comments that Clemson’s cornerbacks coach made when he was made available to reporters this spring. Reed detailed who and what his typical corner looks like at Clemson.

Reed’s recruiting philosophy resonates with Marshall, and the two have been building a growing relationship.

“He actually reminds me of myself,” Marshall said of Reed. “He cares about the size, but he knows that if you’re a 5-foot-10 corner and you can play and he knows you can play, you can tackle, you can cover and do all that, then he’s gonna recruit you. That’s what he’s told me and that’s why he likes my game.”

Clemson visit ‘really set the bar’ for priority CB target

On Monday, The Clemson Insider caught up with a priority target for Clemson in the class of 2023.

Clemson solidified itself as a top school for Lake Mary (Fla.) four-star cornerback Braeden Marshall after he received an offer from cornerbacks coach Mike Reed, while he made his first-ever visit to campus.

In an exclusive interview with TCI, Marshall gave the latest on his recruitment, revealed what he’s been hearing from Clemson and Reed as of late and if he plans on making a return visit to campus anytime soon.

“They really just been texting me, seeing how I’m doing and wanting to get me back up there as soon as possible,” Marshall said. “We’re actually gonna go over the scheme in a couple of days and see where I’d be at in their scheme.”

How has Marshall’s relationship grown with Reed since Clemson pulled the trigger on an offer?

“It’s grown a lot,” he said. “Just seeing him, the way he talks is really the way he is in person. We’ve really just grown as our relationship has grown with not just him, but my family as well.”

We asked Marshall about the comments that Clemson’s cornerbacks coach made when he was made available to reporters over two weeks ago. Reed detailed who and what his typical corner looks like at Clemson.

Reed’s recruiting philosophy resonates with Marshall.

Reed also quipped that he doesn’t want to coach a bunch of Mike Reeds, though. That made Marshall laugh.

“He says that all the time,” Marshall said jokingly.

It’s not just Reed who checks in on Marshall. Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney and defensive coordinator/linebackers coach Wesley Goodwin have also been known to check in on Marshall and reiterate how much of a priority he is in the 2023 class from time to time.

“It means a lot,” Marshall said, “just knowing that it’s not just one coach, it’s a lot of them. That means a lot to me and that means a lot to my family.”

While Marshall is trying to get back to Clemson sometime this spring, he imagines that it might be more feasible to do it this summer. His visit to Clemson on Saturday, March 5, was actually the only visit he’s been on this spring.

“Clemson really set the bar, to be honest with you,” he said. “It checked everything off the checklist. That really set the bar.”

He’s planning on visiting Nebraska, North Carolina and Arkansas all within the span of the next three weeks.

When he takes these visits, what exactly is he looking for?

“I’m really looking to see a school that really wants me and a school that pushes their players academically because football isn’t for the rest of your life,” Marshall said,” so getting that degree is huge. And a school that really pushes for graduation and a school where I really could see myself at the school and playing for a system that will help me shine and help me grow as a player and as a man.”

Marshall is planning on dropping a top schools list on his birthday, May 10.

His plan right now is to have a decision made before the start of his senior season, but nothing is set in stone just yet. One thing that is set in stone, though, is that Clemson will be in Marshall’s top-10 schools. You can go ahead and write that in Sharpie.

“They will be, there’s no doubt,” he said. “They treat their players like how you want them to treat you. They really push you to graduate and it’s family there. Right, when I stepped foot on campus, it was like a family environment and that really got me.”
