2023 NFL draft: 25 potential offensive line targets for the Seahawks

The Seahawks haven’t exactly been known for their offensive line play during the Pete Carroll era.

The Seahawks haven’t exactly been known for their offensive line play during the Pete Carroll era. In fact, the unit has usually been one of the weakest on their roster. That all could change sooner rather than later, though. Thanks to a couple of excellent picks in last year’s draft, Seattle has a strong foundation to build on in their new starting offensive tackles, Charles Cross and Abe Lucas.

If the Seahawks can follow up with another good pair of picks in the 2023 NFL draft, they may soon have their best OL since the Walter Jones years. Most of all what this group needs is a genuine starting center to lead them. Free agent pickup Evan Brown is projected to start this coming season. However, he only signed a one-year deal, so they need to plan for the future.

With that in mind, here are 25 potential offensive line targets in this draft class, beginning with several who they have held official meetings with.

Rams 2023 Draft Prospect Profile: Braeden Daniels (IOL, Utah)

Braeden Daniels out of Utah is a versatile offensive lineman the Rams could consider taking in the 2023 NFL draft.

The Los Angeles Rams experienced a plethora of issues along the offensive line in 2022, mainly due to injuries. A total of 59 sacks were allowed by the offensive line this past season and the Rams will need to bolster their trenches ahead of the 2023 campaign.

David Edwards recently inked a deal with the Buffalo Bills, so the interior of the offensive line is undetermined at this point. Brian Allen got a restructured contract from the Rams, which solidifies him as an option to start at center again next season.

With versatility being an invaluable trait for an offensive lineman in the NFL, Braeden Daniels out of Utah is an intriguing prospect for the Rams in the 2023 NFL draft.

2023 NFL draft: Utah OL Braeden Daniels has top-30 visit with Seahawks

Daniels’ best selling point is that he has experience lining up all over the place.

The Seahawks are doing their due diligence on their preferred prospects ahead of the 2023 NFL draft. The latest news is that they will be hosting Utah offensive lineman Braeden Daniels for an official top-30 visit, according to Justin Melo at the Draft Network.

Daniels’ best selling point is that he has experience lining up all over the place, having started at least 11 games each at left guard, right tackle and left tackle for the Utes. That kind of versatility is always a premium for teams that need depth at multiple spots up front. Daniels has also been stout in pass protection, allowing only five sacks in almost 1,400 pass-blocking snaps, according to Pro Football Focus.

At the Scouting Combine, Daniels checked in at 6-foot-4, 294 pounds with 33″ arms and 9.375″ hands. He tested well athletically, posting a 40-yard dash time just under five seconds, plus a 30.5″ vertical.

Here’s a look at the tape.

Cardinals had formal combine interview with Utah OL Braeden Daniels

Daniels has versatility at tackle and guard but probably will be best at guard. He is a Day 2-3 pick.

The Arizona Cardinals met with scores of NFL draft prospects at the combine early this month. We know who some of the formal interviews were.

We know of another now.

According to The Draft Network’s Justin Melo, the Cardinals held a formal combine interview with Utah offensive lineman Braeden Daniels.

Daniels measured 6-foot-4 and weighed in at 294 pounds at the combine. He showed athleticism, running the 40 in 4.99 seconds and posting a 30.5-inch vertical leap and 9-foot-1 broad jump.

He started at right tackle and left guard before moving to left tackle in 2022, giving him versatility at the next level, although he perhaps will be better suited on the interior with his size and 33-inch arm length.

Daniels had formal interviews at the combine with at least three other teams other than the Cardinals, and he has a top-30 official visit scheduled with the Seattle Seahawks.

He projects as a Day 3 or low Day 2 pick, depending on the projections.

10 offensive linemen to watch for the Colts at NFL combine

Here are 10 offensive linemen to watch for the Colts at the NFL combine.

Watching offensive linemen at the NFL combine might not be the most enjoyable thing to do on a Sunday afternoon but this is still an opportunity for the Indianapolis Colts to find some draft prospects to help bolster their unit.

There were 51 offensive linemen that were invited to the combine but for the Colts’ purposes, there can be a focus more on the interior lineman over the tackles.

Braden Smith and Bernhard Raimann are set to be the bookend tackles for Indy in 2023. While Chris Ballard needs to find a swing tackle for depth purposes, a veteran likely will fill that role, and there are some versatile draft prospects that can play on the inside and outside of the line.

If there is one aspect of the testing of offensive linemen to pay attention to is their short shuttle. There is proof of players turning into at least quality starters in the NFL if they perform well at that drill.

As I mentioned, don’t expect to see tackles on this list of players unless they offer versatility to kick inside, and players that are expected to go early in the first round won’t be included.

Here are some names to watch for on Sunday:

Unpacking Future Packers: No. 87, Utah OL, Braeden Daniels

The Unpacking Future Packers Countdown is a countdown of 100 prospects that could be selected by the Green Bay Packers in the 2023 NFL draft.

Green Bay’s bread and butter in the NFL Draft is selecting offensive linemen on day three of the draft. David Bakhtiari, Josh Sitton, T.J. Lang, Corey Linsley, Jon Runyan Jr, and J.C. Tretter were all day three picks for the Packers.

A player that Brian Gutekunst could target on day three of the 2023 NFL Draft is Braeden Daniels. The Utah offensive lineman checks in at No. 87 in the Unpacking Future Packers countdown.

A three-star recruit out of Texas, Daniels finished his career at Utah with 43 career starts. Daniels started 18 games at left guard and 11 games at right tackle. This past season he started all 14 games at left tackle.

“Daniels greatest strength is his versatility,” Alex Markham, the publisher of UteNation.com said. “He can be trusted to play anywhere along the line and do it well. He has a high football IQ. He’s also someone you can depend on from a health standpoint. Not counting the abbreviated Covid season where the virus ravaged the Utah linemen, Daniels started every game he played in as a Ute, with 14 games played in 2019, 2021, and 2022. He played in two games while redshirting his first year on campus.”

In pass protection, Daniels has quick feet and plays with good kneed bend. He has the lateral quickness to match rushers wide of the pocket. Daniels stays balanced through contact. He’s a technician in pass protection, with coordinated movements.

This past season, Daniels made the move from right tackle to left tackle and gave up zero sacks.

“Utah is historically known as a physical run-blocking line, but in 2022 they performed better as a collective group with their pass-blocking,” Markham said. “Same can be said for Daniels as he graded out high against the pass rush, but average against the run. To me, that speaks volumes to him as a player because he improved his pass blocking from a year ago, despite moving to a more demanding position on the line.”

Daniels is an athletic offensive tackle that doesn’t labor reaching the second level. He sustains his block to create movement in the run game. He has a high football IQ and understands angles to help seal outside runs.

“Normally he’s been outstanding, but he took a step back in 2022,” Markham said. “Plenty of that has to do with the position change, but as mentioned above, the whole line didn’t run-block as well as they blocked in passing situations. This past season was actually the first year Daniels graded out better protecting the pass instead of the run. The last two years he had PFF grades just under 90.”

Fit with the Packers

All signs point to David Bakhtiari being back next season. Zach Tom has proven to be a viable option at right or left tackle, with the versatility to play anywhere along the offensive line. Yosh Nijman will most likely be back. The Packers also have Rasheed Walker and Caleb Jones on the roster. On top of that, Elgton Jenkins is always capable of kicking back outside in a pinch.

It would appear the Packers are set at the tackle position for the upcoming season. However, the NFL Draft is always about long-term projection.

Will Bakhtiari and Nijman be on the roster after next season? What’s Tom’s best position? With a cloud hanging over the future of the tackle position, it would not be shocking to see the Packers take an offensive tackle on day three of the upcoming draft.

With his tackle-guard versatility and experience, Daniels could be an attractive day-three target for the Packers as they look to add more depth to the offensive line.

“I’d draft Daniels because of his positional versatility, high football IQ,” Markham said. “Utah’s offensive line coach Jim Harding is one of the best line coaches at any level. He’s gotten Daniels ready to the point that he should be a plug-and-play starter.”Unp
