Justin Reid, Lonnie Johnson, Bradley Roby return to Texans practice

Injured cornerbacks Bradley Roby and Lonnie Johnson returned to practice for the Houston Texans on Monday.

The Houston Texans may have their complete secondary for their challenging Week 13 tilt with the New England Patriots. On Monday, safety Justin Reid and cornerbacks Lonnie Johnson and Bradley Roby returned to practice, per the Houston Chronicle’s Aaron Wilson.

Reid suffered a concussion and shoulder injury in Week 11’s 41-7 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. He was not cleared from the concussion protocol in time to make Houston’s 20-17 win over the Indianapolis Colts.

If Reid plays on Sunday, he will insert as the Texans’ starting free safety, where he has played since joining the starting lineup in 2018.

Like Reid, Johnson sustained an injury against the Ravens. His foot injury caused him to miss Thursday night’s tilt with Indy. A second-round pick out of Kentucky, he started over Johnathan Joseph while Roby missed time.

Roby has not played since Week 6’s win over the Kansas City Chiefs, in which he suffered a hamstring injury. He has been questionable since and was a game-time decision for Thursday’s win. If he is playing, he will likely insert as a starter, either in the slot or outside.

Texans WR Will Fuller, CB Bradley Roby game-time decisions against the Colts

Houston Texans wide receiver Will Fuller and cornerback Bradley Roby are game-time decisions against the Indianapolis Colts.

Houston Texans wide receiver Will Fuller (hamstring) and cornerback Bradley Roby (hamstring) will be game-time decisions for Thursday’s divisional tilt with the Indianapolis Colts.

Both Fuller and Roby practiced in a limited capacity after the bye week. Neither flew with the team to Baltimore for Houston’s 41-7 loss to the Ravens after they were questionable to play.

“We’ll have to do things with them, not overdo it, to see where they’re at,” coach Bill O’Brien said on Monday. “I would say both of those guys on a short week will be game-time decisions. We’ll have to factor in how we judge that during the week by how we work those guys out, not overdoing it with them, but you have to make sure that they’re ready to go.”

Roby suffered his hamstring injury in a Week 6 win over the Kansas City Chiefs. Fuller sustained a “significant” hamstring pull a week later in a loss to the Indianapolis Colts. Neither have played since.

While Fuller and Roby are game-time decisions, O’Brien did not announce the status of safety Justin Reid (concussion/shoulder) and cornerback Lonnie Johnson (foot), who were both injured on Sunday.

Why are the Texans taking chances on former first-round cornerbacks?

The Houston Texans have acquired former first-round cornerbacks since the opening of free agency. What goes into their decisions?

The Houston Texans have added three former first-round cornerbacks on their roster in Bradley Roby, Gareon Conley, and Vernon Hargreaves. The first was a free agent signing in March, the second a midseason trade, and the third a waiver claim.

Coach Bill O’Brien provided reasons Friday as to why he thinks the Texans are the perfect organization to get the most out of top tier picks who weren’t so stellar with their original draft teams.

“I think part of it is what we’ve seen on film, how we feel like their skill set can fit with what we do, what we know about them relative to Gareon or Vernon or some of the guys that we brought in that we studied in the draft, Laremy Tunsil, Kenny Stills, when they were coming out,” O’Brien said.

The Texans simply don’t look at the talent and follow through with the glint in their eye developed from watching highlights. The Houston personnel and scouting department goes through extensive homework and coordinates with the coaching staff to determine if the players would finally breakout with the Texans or if they’re truly busts.

“We do have a background with them,” said O’Brien. “We look at a lot of different data points. We look at a lot of different contractual situations, situations relative to where they are in their contract relative to are they still on their rookie deal, is it something where you’re just bringing a guy in for basically six games, do you want to do that, do you not want to do that.”

Ultimately, the Texans seek to make decisions that benefit the club, not add another collection to their cabinet of former college standouts.

“I don’t think it’s anything other than we feel like this guy could fit for our team, is this a good decision for our team, and if we believe it is — the consensus is it is — then we try to execute the deal.”

Texans looking at the near-future by resting Will Fuller, Bradley Roby vs. Ravens

The Houston Texans are resting wide receiver Will Fuller and cornerback Bradley Roby vs. the Baltimore Ravens. They are doing so for their future.

The Houston Texans will be without an offensive and defensive starter for Sunday’s AFC showdown with the Baltimore Ravens. Both wide receiver Will Fuller and cornerback Bradley Roby did not travel with the team on Saturday, as they are nursing hamstring injuries.

The Texans’ decision to rest the two — despite being limited in practice all week — comes with eyes set towards the future. Houston will host the Indianapolis Colts four days after battling the Ravens.

The Texans would prefer to have two of their best players for a critical divisional matchup rather than rush them into a series of two games in four days prematurely.

“Look, you have a situation here where you have a game on Sunday, which is an important game — they’re all important games — then you turn right around and you’ve got a game Thursday night,” said coach Bill O’Brien on Friday. “So, you have to weigh all that. You have to weigh where they’re at relative to what our medical personnel are telling us and where they’re at, how they feel.”

Though the availability Fuller and Roby for a big-game would be ideal, Houston is looking at the big picture. Rushing a player back off of a hamstring injury rarely warrants positive results, as they tend to be lingering ailments.

The Texans saw the lingering nature of a hamstring injury in 2018. Then-rookie Keke Coutee missed most of the season for a non-major hamstring injury that aggravated itself seemingly every time he returned.

Rest is a proven method to avoid re-injury with hamstrings. The Texans will not make the mistake of not giving two of their best players rest.

On Sunday, the Texans will trot out Kenny Stills in-place of Fuller and likely the duo of Gareon Conley and Johnathan Joseph at cornerback. They are doing so to ensure that in a Thursday rivalry game, they will get to trot out Fuller and Roby — not their backups.

Texans WR Will Fuller, CB Bradley Roby ruled out for Week 11 against the Ravens

On Saturday, the Houston Texans officially ruled out wide receiver Will Fuller and cornerback Bradley Roby against the Baltimore Ravens.

The Houston Texans will not be at full strength for their much-anticipated Week 11 bout with the Baltimore Ravens. On Saturday, the team announced that wide receiver Will Fuller and cornerback Bradley Roby will not travel with the team to Baltimore, as each deal with hamstring injuries.

Fuller sustained a significant hamstring pull early in Houston’s Week 7 loss to the Indianapolis Colts. He has not played since. He returned to practice on a limited fashion after the Week 10 bye.

Fuller has tallied 34 receptions for 450 yards and three touchdowns on the year. The Texans will attempt to negate his lost presence with Kenny Stills, Keke Coutee, DeAndre Carter and Steven Mitchell.

In the third quarter of the Texans’ Week 6 win over the Kansas City Chiefs, Roby suffered a hamstring injury. He has not played since; instead, practicing in a limited fashion since the injury,

Roby is the Texans’ top cornerback, allowing an 88.3 passer rating in coverage in 2019, per Pro Football Reference. Gareon Conley, Lonnie Johnson, Johnathan Joseph, Vernon Hargreaves, Keion Crossen and Cornell Armstrong round-out the rest of their depth chart at the position.
