Broncos vs. Texans will be a revenge game for Bradley Roby

Texans cornerback Bradley Roby will want to prove Sunday that the Broncos should have re-signed him, according to ex-teammate Chris Harris.

Texans cornerback Bradley Roby will face his former team — and former teammate Chris Harris — when Houston hosts the Broncos on Sunday. While they are opponents on the field, Harris and Roby remain friends off the field.

Harris said he has taken Roby under his wing and worked out with him during the offseason. Roby has missed five games with injuries this season but he returned to action last week and he intercepted quarterback Tom Brady in Houston’s 28-22 win over the Patriots.

“He was having a great season before he got hurt,” Harris said Tuesday. “Unfortunately, I think he missed a month of football. He came back last week and had a great game.

“My trainer has been down there every week getting with him and making sure he’s getting healthy and ready to go. They made sure Roby was ready.”

Harris said he believes Sunday’s game will be personal for Roby.

“I know ‘Rob’ is going to come up and try and show that we should have kept him,” Harris said.

Denver opted not to re-sign Roby earlier this year and he received a one-year, $10 million contract from the Texans. The 27-year-old cornerback has totaled 28 tackles, one sack, one interception and one forced fumble this season.

The only thing stopping Texans CB Bradley Roby is his health

The Houston Texans have an impactful cornerback in Bradley Roby, but the only thing stopping him in 2019 has been his health.

Cornerback Bradley Roby was a force for the Houston Texans defense in their 28-22 win over the New England Patriots Sunday night at NRG Stadium.

The former 2014 Denver Broncos first-round pick collected four tackles, 1.0 sack, a tackle for loss, an interception, and a pass deflection. That Roby was able to accomplish that feat the day after burying his grandfather, for whom he dedicated his performance, underscores the dynamic play Roby brings to the Texans’ secondary.

However, coach Bill O’Brien knows the one factor that keeps Roby from being a consistent threat to opposing offenses.

“The big thing with Bradley has been health,” O’Brien told reporters Wednesday. “Just making sure that he can be available to the team, that’s the big thing. If he stays available to the team, he’s healthy, then he can help us.”

Roby has missed five games due to a hamstring injury he sustained in Week 6 at the Kansas City Chiefs in a 31-24 win.

On the season, Roby has collected 28 tackles, 1.0 sack, two tackles for loss, five pass breakups, one forced fumble, and one interception in his seven games, all of which he has started. Houston has posted a 5-2 record in the games where Roby has played with wins coming against teams with offensive firepower such as the Los Angeles Chargers, Atlanta Falcons, and Chiefs.

“I think that Bradley, he’s got a lot of talent, right,” O’Brien said. “He’s got good speed, good feet, good ball skills.”

The Texans will need Roby, who has still been limited in practice with his hamstring injury, to be available against his old team as Houston takes on the Broncos Sunday at noon CT. Second-year receiver Courtland Sutton could be a matchup problem for the Texans’ secondary, and having a key piece such as Roby in the lineup could make all the difference.

Texans-Broncos Wednesday injury report: Will Fuller, Brennan Scarlett limited

The Houston Texans released their injury report for Wednesday prior to their Week 14 tilt with the Denver Broncos, and Bradley Roby was limited.

Broncos CB Chris Harris was still working with Texans’ Bradley Roby this past offseason

Denver Broncos cornerback Chris Harris Jr. took Houston Texans cornerback Bradley Roby under his wing when they played together in Denver.

Houston Texans cornerback Bradley Roby may not be a member of the Denver Broncos anymore, but he’s still incontact and learning from one of their best, cornerback Chris Harris.

Harris, a four-time Pro Bowler and 2016 All-Pro, has acted as a mentor to Roby, who the Broncos took in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft.

“Roby, he’s been with me all offseason,” said Harris to Broncos media on Tuesday. “I’m definitely taking Roby under my wing the last couple of years. I’ve been with him all offseason.”

Roby parted ways with Harris and the Broncos in the offseason, signing a one-year, $10 million deal with the Texans in March. Despite his residence being in Houston now, Harris keeping tabs on Roby, even sharing the same trainer.

“He was having a great season before he got hurt,” said Harris. “Unfortunately, I think he missed a month of football. He came back last week and had a great game. My trainer has been down there every week getting with him and making sure he’s getting healthy and ready to go. They made sure Roby was ready.”

Roby has acted as the Texans’ primary slot cornerback while taking snaps at the outside if necessary. He has performed well in the role, despite missing five games with a hamstring injury. On Sunday, in a 28-22 win over the New England Patriots, he picked off and sacked Tom Brady.

On the season, Roby has allowed a 74.5 passer rating, per Pro Football Reference, a massive upgrade from his 113.8 allowed one in 2018 with the Broncos. Quarterbacks are 26 for 45 for 282 yards, a touchdown and an interception passing on him.

Roby doesn’t wear blue and orange anymore, but, perhaps, their best cover-man’s skills and talents are rubbing off on him. On Sunday, he will get the chance to show that to Denver directly. when the 8-4 Texans host the 4-8 Broncos.

Broncos versus Texans could be personal for Bradley Roby, Kareem Jackson

Sunday’s bout between the Houston Texans and Denver Broncos could be personal for both Bradley Roby and Kareem Jackson, who switched teams.

This time last year, Bradley Roby was a starting cornerback for the Denver Broncos and Kareem Jackson was a starting cornerback for the Houston Texans.

365 days later, the roles are reversed. Roby starts for the Texans; Jackson, as a safety, does the same for the Broncos.

On Sunday at 12:00 p.m. CT at NRG Stadium, Roby will face his former team and vice-versa for Jackson. Broncos cornerback Chris Harris, who has now played with both, believes the matchup will be personal for each.

“I think it’s going to be personal for Kareem and ‘Rob.’ Both teams kind of didn’t want each other, so I definitely know for them they’re going to have a chip on their shoulder,” Harris told Denver media Tuesday. “I know ‘Rob’ is going to come up and try and show that we should have kept him, and same thing with Kareem.”

As Harris alludes to, the Texans didn’t want Jackson, the Broncos didn’t want Roby. After signing with the Broncos — to the tune of three-year, $33 million — in March, Jackson said he felt disrespected by the Texans.

“They didn’t even approach me with an offer or any type of deal,” said Jackson on March 11, per Mark Berman of FOX 26. “Obviously they didn’t want me back or whatever the case may be. I’m not really sure. My agent was never approached by anybody from the Texans.”

The Broncos let Roby walk, despite him being their first-round pick in 2014 and a starter. He chose to sign with the Texans on a one-year, $10 million deal, spurning offers from the Pittsburgh Steelers and San Francisco 49ers.

Both Jackson and Roby are thriving with their respective teams. Jackson has seamlessly switched to a full-time safety, allowing 248 yards in coverage in 2019, per Pro Football Reference. Roby has seen his passer rating allowed go from 113.8 to 74.5.

Sunday’s matchup looks to be a revenge game for a pair of defensive backs that swapped teams.

5 takeaways from Patriots’ alarming 28-22 loss against Texans

Here are five takeaways from the Patriots’ ugly loss to the Texans.

The New England Patriots didn’t look like one of the league’s top teams after losing 28-22 to the Houston Texans on Sunday night.

In all three facets of the game, the Patriots couldn’t figure out how to gain any momentum. Aside from the exciting six minutes to end the game, the Patriots offense was hard to watch. Bill O’Brien and the Texans were prepared for this matchup and they knew how to counter Josh McDaniels’ game plan.

The Patriots will host the Kansas City Chiefs next week and they’ll see the Buffalo Bills again in Week 16. Although this game doesn’t rule the Patriots out of Super Bowl contention, it definitely exposed some weaknesses.

Here are five takeaways from the game.

James White, Julian Edelman only offensive weapons

The Texans came into the game with a plan to double cover Julian Edelman and to put a cornerback on James White. This plan worked for the first three quarters of the game, and it left the Patriots with only nine points halfway through the fourth quarter.

Despite this intense coverage, both of Tom Brady’s top receivers walked out of the game with solid numbers. Edelman left the game with six catches for 106 yards and a touchdown. White finished the game with 14 carries for 79 rushing yards – along with eight catches for 98 receiving yards and two receiving touchdowns. Two of these touchdowns came in the final six minutes of the fourth quarter.

It’s apparent going forward that Brady will only have these two as reliable receivers, with Mohamed Sanu and Jakobi Meyers as the only decent options. Philip Dorsett and N’Keal Harry haven’t proved reliable, and it’s put a huge question mark on this offense.

Texans CB Bradley Roby played with heavy heart against the Patriots

Houston Texans cornerback Bradley Roby was playing with a heavy heart during the club’s 28-22 win over the New England Patriots Sunday night.

HOUSTON — Houston Texans cornerback Bradley Roby played with a heavy heart Sunday night in the team’s 28-22 win over the New England Patriots at NRG Stadium.

The 27-year-old buried his 85-year-old grandfather in Mississippi the day before making his return to the gridiron after being sidelined with a hamstring injury since the Week 6 win at the Kansas City Chiefs.

“This game was special to me because my grandfather just passed and I went to the funeral yesterday and I promised him and I promised him that I would make some plays,” Roby said. “He was blind, so he never saw me play. But maybe he could see me now. That’s what I wanted to do was honor him and rest in peace for my granddad.”

Roby collected three tackles and was arguably the best thing the Texans had going defensively. The former 2014 Denver Broncos first-round pick intercepted Patriots quarterback Tom Brady on a third-and-4 from the New England 25-yard line and returned the takeaway up to the Patriots’ 6-yard line.

Even though an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on Roby pushed the Texans’ starting position to the 21-yard line instead, the interception was the catalyst for Houston’s first score of the game, a 14-yard touchdown pass from from quarterback Deshaun Watson to running back Duke Johnson to take a 7-3 lead with 45 seconds to go in the first quarter.

“That’s something that I like to take pride in, being a game changer and making plays,” said Roby. “I was telling the guys earlier in the week I was going to make a play. I don’t know what it was, but I was going to make a play. So, I’m happy that I was able to.”

Roby added 1.0 sack, a quarterback hit, a tackle for loss, and a pass breakup. The Fort Worth native would have collected his second interception of the night, one that would have gone for a touchdown, but it was called back due to defensive holding on Roby.

Nonetheless, Roby picked up on the emotion.

Said Roby: “When I scored, I felt that energy, the whole crowd just went crazy. That’s why I took my helmet off. I just wanted him to feel me. I felt so good. I felt so great.”

Huge sentiments often lead to big performances, and the Texans benefited from Roby’s play to improve to 8-4 on the season and prove their worth against the best team in the conference.

WATCH: Texans CB Bradley Roby picks off Patriots QB Tom Brady

Houston Texans cornerback Bradley Roby got a big interception on New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady on Sunday Night Football.

Where had Bradley Roby been the last seven weeks?

The free agent cornerback jumped a route on third-and-4 Sunday night as the Houston Texans battled the New England Patriots. Roby picked off quarterback Tom Brady and returned the interception all the way to the New England 6-yard line.

However, there was an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on Roby for excessive celebration that backed up the Texans’ starting position to the 21-yard line. Nonetheless, it was great starting position for the Texans to do something about the Patriots’ 3-0 lead. On the ensuing drive, Watson threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to running back Duke Johnson to give Houston a 7-3 lead with 45 seconds to go in the first quarter.

Can the Texans count on cornerback Bradley Roby versus the Patriots?

Houston Texans CB Bradley Roby suffered a hamstring injury in Week 6, and is trending in the right direction for the New England Patriots.

The Houston Texans’ best cornerback has not played a snap since Week 6’s 31-24 win over the Kansas City Chiefs. Bradley Roby, who suffered a strained hamstring in the victory, has sat out numerous weeks to make his highly-anticipated recovery.

That recovery could come on Sunday, against Tom Brady and the vaunted New England Patriots. On Wednesday, coach Bill O’Brien indicated that he, along with others, are trending in the right direction for Sunday.

“I think that there is a lot of guys probably trending in the right direction,” O’Brien told reporters Wednesday. “I think today and tomorrow is probably a big day for that. We’ll see how those two days go, but yea, I think there is a lot of guys trending in the right direction.”

Roby split time between the slot and boundary before suffering the injury. According to Pro Football Reference, he allowed an 88.3 passer rating in coverage prior to sustaining the injury.

On Wednesday’s injury report, Roby was listed as limited.
