Where UNC women’s basketball lands on early ESPN Bracketology

The North Carolina women’s basketball program lands on the 2023-2024 bracketology.

We are a good ways away from the start of the North Carolina women’s basketball season from kicking off. Nevertheless, we already have predictions on where they might land next March Madness, with ESPN releasing their first bracketology for the 2023-2024 season.

The Tar Heels are the sixth seed in the Portland 4 bracket, tipping off against South Dakota St. The bracket also offers a potential matchup with the Tar Heels and NC State meeting in the elite eight.

Unsurprisingly, the bracketology is ACC-heavy, with the conference featuring the second most teams (8) to make the tournament, one shy from the leader Pac-12. One of the more significant shocks is that Virginia is listed as one of the first four teams out. Meanwhile, South Carolina sits at two seed despite a legendary run the last few seasons.

The placement for UNC is unique, especially with the loss of Kennedy Todd-Williams to Ole Miss. However, with the expected emergence of Paulina Paris coming off an outstanding freshman campaign, with the return of Deja Kelly and Alyssa Ustby, a sixth seed may need to be higher.

Here’s where Florida basketball lands in ESPN’s way-too-early bracketology

Sure, it’s 11 months away but why not? Here’s where ESPN has Florida basketball seeded in the 2024 NCAA Tournament.

Florida basketball fell well short of expectations in Todd Golden’s first season as head coach, finishing with a losing record after getting bumped by the Central Florida Knights in the National Invitation Tournament back in March.

However, it is not all doom and gloom in Gainesville. Despite losing a handful of players to the transfer portal and expiring eligibility — including All-SEC center Colin Castleton — the Orange and Blue have also added former Marshall Thundering Herd center Micah Handlogten out of the portal along with power forward Thomas Haugh and Australian center Alex Condon in the 2023 recruiting class.

While there is no shortage of time between now and when the 2023-24 season starts, ESPN’s Joe Lunardi took some time recently to formulate his way-too-early 2024 NCAA Tournament bracketology. Gators fans might be surprised to learn that Florida earned a No. 8 seed in the Midwest bracket based in Detroit, Michigan, facing the ninth-seeded Rutgers Scarlet Knights in the opening round.

The Southeastern Conference is represented by eight schools in the bracketology, tied for first with the Big 12 and Big Ten. The ACC, Big East and Pac-12 all have five teams among the field of 68, while the American, Southwest and WCC all have two.

NIT insider John Templon breaks down Rutgers basketball’s outlook in the tournament

NIT expert John Templon believes Rutgers basketball could be poised for a tournament run.

Rutgers basketball is heading for postseason basketball and while the NIT may not have been the team’s goal, it still represents a chance for the program to play at a very high level and compete for a trophy. And for those who watch the tournament closely, this Rutgers team has the chance to make a deep run in the tournament.

Following the decision to not include Rutgers basketball in the NCAA Tournament field, the program accepted a bid to the NIT. Their NIT schedule opens tonight when they host Hofstra.

John Templon has a passion and love for the NIT, having covered the tournament for over a decade via his website, NIT Bracketology. He sees Rutgers, coming off the disappointment of not making the NCAA Tournament, as primed to make a run now in the NIT.

“There’s a chance that Rutgers could make a big run this season. I think Steve Pikiell is an excellent game-planning coach and that helps in these sorts of situations,” Templon told Rutgers Wire.

“Other teams I’m intrigued by in the bracket are Utah Valley, which had a great season in the WAC, and North Texas, which is a lockdown defensive team.”

There was some controversy about Rutgers apparently being snubbed for the NCAA Tournament, given that their resume stacked up very well against the likes of North Carolina State and Providence, both of whom made the tournament.

Templon, tracks these NCAA Tournament bubble teams for obvious reasons. He wasn’t necessarily surprised that Rutgers wasn’t included in the field for the NCAA Tournament as he saw many of the same holes in the resume that the selection committee also saw.

[lawrence-related id=24981]

“I think I was one of the very few people who had some serious concerns about Rutgers’s resume heading into the weekend,” Templon said.

“The Scarlet Knights had an incredibly anomalous resume because they had so many good wins, but also losses to teams like Temple, Minnesota and Nebraska. In addition, they hadn’t played as well since Mawot Mag had gotten hurt – losing seven of 10, albeit against a difficult schedule.

“Those factors gave me concerns about how the NCAA selection committee would treat their case. I wavered back-and-forth on whether Rutgers would end up in the NIT for most of the week.”

Crimson Tide projected to earn No. 1 overall seed in March Madness

Joe Lunardi projects Crimson Tide as No. 1 overall seed in March Madness

For the eighth time in school history, the Alabama Crimson Tide are champions of the SEC tournament. It is the Tide’s second title in the past three years under head coach Nate Oats as he continues to guide the program into uncharted territory.

Alabama knocked off the Texas A&M Aggies in the SEC title game by a score of 82-63 to put the exclamation point on an outstanding season. The victory was enough for ESPN Bracketology expert Joe Lunardi to move the Tide up to the No. 1 overall seed for March Madness.

The Tide are peaking at the perfect time as today is Selection Sunday and the NCAA March Madness field of 64 will be unveiled later this evening. Roll Tide!
