Joe Kelly has a hot take on Red Sox’s cheating investigation

“From the get-go I just thought it was laugh out loud funny.”

While the MLB’s investigation into the Boston Red Sox’s cheating scandal from 2018 remains unresolved, players from that squad are denying, denying, denying.

Second baseman Rafael Devers and World Series MVP Steve Pearce are among the Red Sox players who have denied cheating. Former Red Sox and current L.A. Dodgers pitcher Joe Kelly chimed in during a recent interview with WEEI.

The Red Sox used video replay room illegally on the path to winning the World Series during the 2018 season, according to The Athletic’s Evan Drellich. The team already fired manager Alex Cora for his involvement in the Houston Astros’ cheating scandal — Cora was the Astros’ bench coach during their marred World Series season.

But if you asked the Red Sox, there was no foul play during 2018. Here’s what Kelly told WEEI, via WEEI.com’s Rob Bradford:

“From the get-go, I just thought it was laugh out loud funny. Now that this is the last thing on people’s mind obviously with how the world is right now. Whenever the investigation is done I’m interested in seeing what is in the investigation. If there is cheating involved with how good our team was we should have won every single out. We should have not even lost an inning if there was some good cheating involved, which would have been a lot more fun because we would have won in four. We would have swept through the playoffs and made it really, really fast and been able to go to Hawaii or go to Mexico and go on vacation a lot sooner than we did.”

Considering the strength of Kelly’s remarks, it will be fascinating to see what — if anything — the league finds from their investigation of the Sox.

New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees was a celebrity guest at the “Saving by Shaving” event benefiting Boston Children’s Hospital, where he chose to have his head shaved as part of a fundraiser that ultimately raised $7 million.

Other notable participants included Boston Red Sox legend David Ortiz and Mass. Gov. Duane Baker Jr, as well as players from the New England Patriots and Boston Bruins. Brees also joined WEEI Radio for an interview before taking his spot in the barber’s chair, where he discussed his future with the Saints and shared his take on Tom Brady’s odds of re-signing with the Patriots.

Brees shared a video on Instagram of his first brush with the hair clippers, which you can see below. He’s the latest Saints player to cut his golden locks for a good cause — Thomas Morstead has regularly grown his hair out before donating it to charities working with pediatric cancer patients, while Sean Payton also shaved his head last summer to support a personal friend.

David Ortiz weighs in on Tom Brady’s future, legacy with Patriots

If anyone understands Tom Brady’s situation, it’s Red Sox legend David Ortiz.

Tom Brady’s looming free agency decision has taken over the limelight this offseason.

After 20 years with the New England Patriots, he’s heading into the market with an open mind. He’s a legendary figure in the Boston area, bringing six Super Bowl championships and countless memories. Not many people can relate to the pressure Brady’s under in this situation, but Red Sox legend David Ortiz is one of those people.

Ortiz is a ten-time All-Star, three-time World Series champion, World Series MVP and so much more. Similar to Brady, he had a free agency decision in the later years of his career, where he ultimately decided to stay in Boson.

He weighed in on the situation while joining WEEI.com for an interview.

“I don’t want him to go anywhere. I want him to stay,” Ortiz said. “That’s my mind. But it’s up to whatever is best for him and his family. It’s not all about what people think. He has a choice what is good for him. It’s not just for people telling him what he has to do.”

Whether or not Brady’s decision will affect his legacy, Ortiz has a strong stance.

“His legacy has already been built. It’s always there,” he said. “That’s not the problem. His problem is not going to be legacy. He could go and play somewhere else for the next 10 years when he returns to New England his legacy is going to be there.

“It’s a good thing to do but you also have to look at your options. I hope he stays with the Patriots, but it’s not up to what I say. It’s his decision. Sometimes an offer at home might be a couple of million less than what you could get on the road. It’s up to you whether you think it’s worth it.”

Free agency begins on March 18 and there is a slew of teams reportedly willing to pursue Brady. His future has caused an unreal amount of speculation, and the talks around it will continue until he makes a decision.

Why the Mookie Betts blockbuster fell apart and what could happen next

It’s probably still going to happen. Maybe.

The Los Angeles Dodgers and the Boston Red Sox had agreed upon a blockbuster to send outfielder Mookie Betts and David Price to L.A. in a three-team trade with the Minnesota Twins, according to multiple reports.

But that mega-deal fell apart this weekend, per multiple reports.

The Red Sox received the medical documentation for Twins right-hander Brusdar Graterol and Dodgers outfielder Alex Verdugo, the two players Boston acquired in the deal. But the Sox weren’t pleased, according to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal. Graterol’s medical records caused Boston to view him as more of a reliever than a starter, which meant his value wasn’t quite what the Sox had hoped (even if reports indicate Boston shouldn’t have been surprised with these findings).

This complication comes while Boston media and fans have skewered the organization for the move. The Red Sox bailed on Betts, the 2018 MVP, and Price in a transparent effort to get below MLB’s luxury-tax threshold to get back to the minimum penalty rate.

The three teams are still interested in getting the deal done, per Rosenthal. The Sox, however, seem less interested in completing the deal than before — perhaps because the court of public opinion has shifted the ownership group’s view on the trade. Their hesitance surrounding Graterol nearly pushed the Twins out of the deal entirely, per a report from the Star Tribune on Saturday. On Sunday, however, the three teams still seem to be in communication.

So how might the deal change? Here’s what reporters are saying.

It seems this trade has practically reverted back to square one. The Dodgers may need to find a new third team to appease the Red Sox’s demands for elite prospects (and, apparently, one who is a starter). Or perhaps L.A. and Minnesota can find a way to amass enough talent to appease Boston.
